That's a funny reply and it's essentially correct. Any kind

endeavor is just like real life: There's no definite target, no
step-by-step instructions that will guarantee success.

well, although I wrote it as a joke, the basic ideas and the image of
snow slipping from a bamboo leaf come from Zen In The Art Of Archery
by Eugen Herrigel. Some of us might think it's a lot of mystical
droppings from the rear of a bull, but it was a great influence on
Henri Cartier-Bresson, so maybe there's something in it.

You must follow the Way Of The Blind Archer, grasshopper. The Blind
Archer does not see the target. He allows the target to see him,

to guide the arrow into his heart, as the heron's beak enters the
stream. For are they not one, the archer, the target and the arrow?
Are they not avatars of each of us, and we of them? Your

I saw the mystical droppings from the rear of a dog lying on the sidewalk
yesterday and almost took a picture of it because it looked like art. Then
I decided it stunk.

Sorry for the shorter reply to your second e-mail. To break it down to
basics, the site administrators are being more critical now than when
they first started reviewing images. This is due to the very large
number of images being submitted (we actually thought we would have a
hard time getting enough images and artists - imagine our surprise).
Since we are getting quite a few submissions, it is difficult to give an
explanation for every image that is declined, and sometimes a revised
image isn't accepted again (if better work has been submitted by the
artist).

Again, sorry for the short reply to your direct e-mail.

Good heavens, man! No need to apologise!
I teach web design and multimedia at university: I *know* how much work
you people have had to put into that site! Flash front end and
database-driven back end... all the while dealing with, well,
artists. I don't know how many people are on your team except for
this - not enough. (A phrase which probably also describes how you're
paid.)

You're doing a great job. As I said, I'm just curious about how things
work. Now that you know about my profession I expect you understand why
this gallery is of particular interest to me.

Elsewhere in this thread or somewhere, there's this exchange on photos

would you say that only a lens with the name Pentax on it is a

Well, if it's sold as a Pentax lens it's a Pentax lens :) If it was
made after Asahi changed its corporate name to Pentax (2-3 years ago)
it's a Pentax lens no matter what's written on it. Before that I
suppose it could accurately be called either a Takumar or an Asahi lens.

And, should M42 Takumar lenses be allowed in the Pentax Gallery
 then or not?

I expect they would allow it since they were made by Asahi and there
were no lenses sold under the name Pentax back then.

True, I don't expect 100% agreement, but 99% in the case of my own, yes. :-)

I wonder 1) how many people are making the decison and 2) what objective

Since nearly all of my photos are made on film and with old equipment I miss

thanks and greetings

A cat photo a sunset and a lighthouse, eh? Well I can top that: I just
sent them a FLOWER photo! Two flower photos, actually. (Might as well
hit 'em with both barrels, eh?)

I must admit I've found their selections and rejections puzzling. Some
of my lifetime portfolio shots were declined and some mediocre stuff
got accepted. I suspect they may be trying to fill some photo
categories that haven't received enough submissions. Or possibly trying
to get shots with some lenses that haven't been sufficiently
represented yet (this is, we have to keep in mind, primarily intended
as a marketing tool for Pentax, not a free image-hosting service for
photographers). And though I've been disappointed and baffled by some
of their decisions, I'm glad to see they're trying to maintain a high
standard.

Can't wait till it opens to the public and I can browse everyone else's
