obtain forgiveness than it is to get permission.


It occasionally leads to a problematical mind set. There are some things 
that cannot and will not be forgiven.

One of my favorites along those lines was Demo Dick Marcinko's 
UNODIR.  If he wanted to do something of which higher-higher might not 
approve, he'd send up a message Unless otherwise directed (UNODIR), 
we're going to X to do Y.  Of course, he sent it just as his team went 
off the communication grid, so no otherwise direction was going to get 
through.
