bright, but not as red as they seem in real life, in other shots
they seem downright dull. By experimentation that doesn’t seem to be

That is an excellent shot. I like the position of the tail and the wings.

And this one is indeed standing on a branch.

Thanks Ann. I think his displeasure was directed at me. A swan, ducks and geese
were nearby, but they were all behind him. He’s in the cattails of a wetland
adjacent to Vray Lake. Saw a lot of redwing blackbirds today, but this was the
only one that was relatively close. Some up in the trees were doing battle with
grackles.

Or not, I don't know. Don't like to clone. Sometimes necessary though.

Re: PESO - Red Winged Blackbird (male)

2013-06-29 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I dunno. When I was shooting today (got a juvenile red winged blackboard -
kinda cool) I took a look at the scale on the focus ring and I got to about 8
feet. Sometimes I'll get closer: my barn swallow was very near the closest I
can focus on my M200mm f4.0, about 6.5 feet, but that's unusually close:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/06/barn-swallow.html?m=1

With such a short lens (for this sort of stuff) I have no choice but get as
close as possible.

I try to lift the camera to eye early as that motion does tend to spook them.
Then I take teeny steps, shooting a few frames each step until we're done
(meaning the bird flies away).

Thanks for the comment. Thanks to everyone else who commented and looked. Glad
you enjoyed.

Cheers,
frank

And while the beak is open what's coming out ain't singing. Red winged

She was letting me know she didn't want me there. Kept her distance but kept
squawking while she flitted around me (but not too close), trying to get me to
leave.

I don't blame her. ;-)

Thanks for the comment, Bruce. And thanks to everyone else who looked and

Yes, It's the Udvar-Hazy Center. $15 to park the car free after that
and an amazing museum. The Blackbird just stuns everyone because it
is so much bigger than you think it would be. And, of course, because
it was built in the early 60's. From a photography POV, the place just
oozes with amazing angles. I was using the Oly with the 14 (28
equivalent) and that is the right lens, unless maybe a 24.

I never heard that one. KJ is someone I've always respected from
history. The UH Center has the other end of his career as well, the
P-38. My young friend was intrigued by the two planes, and was truly
surprised that the SR-71 is an almost 50 year old design. We had a
nice chat about the P-38 and the SR-71 as they are both beautiful
designs with some funny similarities.

everything else was properly exposed. Bringing out detail in the bird

PESO: Blackbird

2010-11-21 Thread David Mann
This little fellow was catching some rays on our tomato planter on the front
deck (last year it was a chilli planter* but the winter was far too cold).
After a while he popped into the planter and had a dig around, emerging every
few minutes to keep an eye out.

It really surprised me to see him there as the planter box is only about 3ft
long and 1-1/2ft wide. I guess it's a signal that our compost must be full of
tasty bugs.

K10D, F*300 f/4.5, 1/250th at f/9.5, shot through a double glazed window that

don't have much in the way of processing tools on the laptop.

* If anyone wants a recipe for a delicious tomato jalapaño relish, let me
know and I might dig it up when I get back from Aus. It also works well with
Thai Super chillies if you want a bit more punch.

Well, I live in California and this was shot just outside of
Sacramento, so it could be that particular bird - me thinks.

And here I was being a turnip and connecting dayton in your host name

Per both the Sibley and the Smithsonian guides, the bicolored (no
yellow) blackbird is a regional sub-species of the red-winged blackbird,
rather than being its own distinct species. (Since the amount of yellow
varies regionally over the whole *large* range of red-winged black
birds.)

So it's a red-winged either way; it's a just a local, special
red-winged. :)

Given that you're not taking the picture in California (where there are
bicolored and tricolored black birds) there's really not anything else
it can be but a red-winged black bird.

Definitely a red wing blackbird. While this might not be an
outstanding bird picture, it's an outstanding picture. A nice
composition in which the bird plays a role.

I did note this blurb in your informative post:

Regional Differences
There’s subtle variation in Red-winged Blackbirds across the country. The most
obvious
race is the “bicolored blackbird” of coastal California, which shows no yellow
border
on the red shoulders.

That sounds more like this bird. Based on the rest of the
description and the song, this sure seems like a California bicolored
version.

I'm with you on that question/answer thing but there is also a train of thought
that pictures of wildlife should have some artistic merit. One of the
differences between a record and a work of art is that the subject is not
necessarily slap in the centre of the frame in art. This, apparently, merits
the exclamation of boing! (or something similar) when it happens. All of
yours are so framed but you say you did it deliberately, so that makes them
works of art and all is well with the world.

I'm not keen on Flash, either, but javascript -- at least in weird open
source browsers -- can be constrained to behave.

Interesting subject but the pictures are rather (I think the term
is) boingy - you can ask Mark both if I've got it right and what
   it means. Think cross hairs.

O Mark? Might you care to explicate and expound?

I will cheerfully confess to an objective of recording field marks
with these; that's part of what got me interested in photography.
(what _was_ that? as a question with a hope of an answer.)
Artistic merit is (for me, about bird pictures) generally secondary
to being able to tell what it is.

I'm with you on that question/answer thing but there is also a train
of thought that pictures of wildlife should have some artistic merit.

Well, sure, if they're meant to be presented as art.

I meant to present these as hah! cryptic mutant giant sparrow
colouration or not, you can tell what it is! that never happens! woot!,
rather than as art.

I think there's a very large swamp involved there; is a street
photographer finding art, or recording existing art, or recording human
things to which people naturally have an emotional response similar to
the emotional response to art?

For myself, I don't think there's much utility to a general case answer.

One of the differences between a record and a work of art is that the
subject is not necessarily slap in the centre of the frame in art.

Sure. These, though, are much more in the nature of records in which
any incidental artistic merit is welcome to manifest itself.

This, apparently, merits the exclamation of boing! (or something
 similar) when it happens.

Would you happen to know the derivation of the effect noise? I can
follow the objection to universally centring things, but am having
trouble figuring out why that should go boing!.

All of yours are so framed but you say you did it deliberately, so
that makes them works of art and all is well with the world.

Small bird, that doesn't hold still; centre focus only, focus
confirmation desperately needed using a lens that has a focal plane like
a microtome; fixed focal length, such that making sure parts of the bird
aren't outside the frame is a challenge at the range it happened to be
at. It more or less has to be centred, or at least if I want it to be
in focus at all I more or less have to try to get the subject centred.

So I suppose I did it deliberately when I decided I wanted the picture
in focus if I could get it. :)

-- Graydon, who would about kill for a DA 800/f5.6 mirror lens with
autofocus. Aperture control would be nice, but not necessary.

Taking pictures of songbirds generally makes me feel that f2.8 is very
slow and 800mm is awfully short, but these mostly came out OK. 800mm/F8
Rokinon mirror lens, K20D, ISO200, tripod and cable release.  Shutter
 speeds between 1/40 and 1/100.

Very nice series.

cheers,
