2016-10-04 Thread P.J. Alling
Yea, you can tell it's a Pentax when you see the closeup of the "parts"
the lens mount is unmistakable, no other manufacture uses that mount,
they don't actually show you the camera because... OK, it could be an
old Ricoh, film camera, but I think it was specifically digital, so I'm
assuming it was an old trade in. Maybe they didn't use a similarly
ancient Canon or Nikon because the interior parts weren't as sturdy, or
maybe they just decided on resale value.

Nice. One of the models before they became all bloated and ugly. Good luck with
it!

My friend Ed and I put many miles on one very similar to that. It was used to
tow the land sailer, the munitions required for high-end rocketry, camping
gear, etc all over the northwestern deserts of Nevada and eastern Oregon. I
think that was before they became the darling of the lesbian set.

On the other hand, that little black dress always looks so good. ]:-)

Re: Car photography hints?

2016-10-04 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
To supplement Paul's notes:

- Wash and wax the car before shooting.
- Choose dusk or dawn light to shoot in.
- Turn on head and parking lights depending on illumination levels.

I sometimes like a little bit more interesting or urban background rather than
just trees or hills. I find that when I have zooms to work with and play with
framing and such, I almost always see the most pleasing shots made at 75 to
85mm for most exterior shots, 24 to 28 mm for interior shots, and 50mm for
engine compartment details.

Thanks for commenting Alan.

The fall season offer many photo opportunities in Michigan.
The color change starts in the western part of the Upper Peninsula and
gradually heads east and then south to the Lower Peninsula.
There can be fall color somewhere on Michigan for 6 weeks or so, generally
starting late September most years.

Shutter firing erratic

2016-10-04 Thread Eric Weir
Shooting a cross country meet this evening there were numerous instances in
which the shutter did not fire or firing was delayed when I pressed the shutter
release button.

My camera is a k-5. I was using the 4-5.6/50-200 lens. On some of the occasions
I experienced the problem, maybe all of them, I had a polarizing filter on the
lens. Many of the situations were likely underexposed. I assume exposure
settings should not affect whether the shutter fires or not. The battery
indicator indicated about a half-charge. I changed batteries anyway, and for a
moment that seemed to make a difference, but only for a moment.

I checked through the menu after the meet to see if there was something I might
have set that would have caused this problem, but didn’t find anything.

Any clues as to what was going on? Might it be a mechanical problem?

Thanks,

If you're shooting in AF.S mode, the action priority might be set to
"Focus-priority" (default setting). The K-5 manual says the shutter
won't fire if the subject is not in focus.

See the Custom Setting 3 menu on p.92. This can be a problem especially
if you use the shutter release button for both auto-focus and shutter
release.

There should also be a function that allows you to use the AF button on
the back for auto-focus & the shutter release only for shutter release.
It seemed like enabling the AF button on the back makes AF button and/or
pressing the shutter release halfway causes it to auto-focus. I couldn't
quite figure out how to separate the functions by what it said in the
manual.

Re: Shutter firing erratic

2016-10-04 Thread Stanley Halpin
Eric, I think John nailed the problem. You have your options set such that the
camera will not fire if [something] is not in focus.
I don’t remember the K-5 setup, but on the K-3 and other cameras since then
there is a choice for AF1 or AF2 under Button Customization. AF1 is the
“normal” approach: AF is engaged if you depress the shutter half-way or if you
press the AF button on the back. AF2 is for we fans of “back button focusing.”
If you choose this setting, only the AF button on the back engages AF.

So, if you set your AF mode to AF-C, choose AF2 in the Customization menu, and
choose shutter priority rather than focus priority, you can shoot as follows:
1. Press the AF button, 2. Wait until the camera is focused on the spot of your
choice. 3. Recompose as you choose. 4. Fire away. If the subject is moving,
keep your thumb on the AF button, track along, and fire whenever the mood
strikes you. Note, if the subject is still, keep your thumb away from the AF
button unless and until you want to choose a new focus point.

Re: OT: Magnificent Moscow Metro

2016-10-04 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I agree with Dan: While I haven't used London Underground, I have not seen
a large-city subway system that would unequivocally bit Moscow Metro.

(But I haven't been to Chine or Korea.)

Besides the beautiful architecture, there are many advantages of
Moscow Metro:
1. Open long hours (most stations are open for entry from about 5:30am
till 1:00am, while typically the last train starts from the end station
at about 1am).
2. The frequency of trains during the day time is 2-4 minutes, and can be
10 (or even close to 15) minutes at late night.

3. Trains are long, and hence have high capacity.
4. Low cost (very affordable) and simple payment system (per ride,
regardless of length or line changes).
5. Fairly large and mostly logical coverage (unlike e.g. lopsided subway
system in NYC).

The biggest negative aspect is the lack of temperature control inside the
trains (no AC), - until about 2010. These days there are still many trains
without AC.

Unfortunately, subway systems in the ConUS are by far inferior to
Moscow Metro (and some are crappy or nonexistant).
