be a

The right person would have to have at least five years of post-Ph.D.

Any

We have a job announcement coming out in a few weeks also. Just like
Portland State, we are demanding -- unrealistically perhaps -- that the new
applicants have the ability to raise money through grants. It's all part of
the new emphasis on making the universities run like businesses. Martin, I'm
sure glad that I got into this racket when I did and do not have to face the
same obstacles that you do.

I finished my grapple with higher education in the mid-sixties and while
I was on an academic career track for awhile I blew it by failing to
recognize my (the?) limits. Reading this list and lbo and badsubjects has
provided some glimpses into academic life and raised some interest about
the quality of the life. Most of my impressions were drawn from literary
portrayals. I imagine that the quality of the life in large part is
determined by the character and quality of the participant, as in all of
human activity, but I guess that I was curious about what kind of reward
was anticipated by someone who finds themself facing the obstacles you
suggest.

PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY, Portland, OR

Assistant professor opening for candidate with teaching fields that

publication record in international economics or economic development.
Capacity for finding external support for scholarly activities.
Candidate should display exceptional ability in classroom lecturing to a
diverse student body at an urban university campus. Specialization in

to September 2001. Send curriculum vita with cover letter and 3 letters

***

We really hope and want to hire both an international economist and a
development economist, if we can get another position. How and when we
can accomplish this remains to be seen, particularly as there are
measures on our ballot here in Oregon that may jeopardize our ability to
hire even one person this year. However, we are hopeful!

Portland State is a city school, with a commuter student body dominated
by first generation college students. Students are often older than
elsewhere, and have significant family and job responsibilities.
Personally, it’s a student body I really like; though they are
overextended, they take their schoolwork seriously and are willing to
speak up in class.

Portland is a mid-size, liveable city at the confluence of two huge
rivers in beautiful country. The beach is an hour and a half away, the
mountains an hour away.

It is, however, one of the whitest cities in the country, rivalling
Minneapolis. African-American, Asian and Latino populations are all
small, and of about equal size, about 5 percent of the city each. While
the black community is small, it tends to be pretty organized and
connected to PSU; we have one of the oldest Black Studies programs in
the country, as well as a fairly young Chicano/Latino studies program.
The Native American student body also tends to be pretty organized on
campus, and a presence in most years.

We have a strong Women’s Studies program, that has just expanded from a
certificate program to a major. As elsewhere, most of it’s offerings
are cross-listings, but it has its own, strong core.

The Economics Department is small, 9 tenure-track faculty at present.
We offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and participate in PhD
programs in Urban Studies and System Science.

I’d be happy to answer any questions anyone may have about the
position. I’m on the hiring committee, and will be chair of the
department as of January. Best! Mary King, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We have a job opening. The field is environment or natural
resources. Strong Quant types in other fields will also get
consideration. The department is not heterodox but will
consider heterodox candidates. We already have one heterodox

Job Opening

1998-04-27 Thread MARY

Hello All!

We've got a job opening here at Portland State (Oregon). It's better
than it looks, as the plan is for it to be made tenure-track if this
initial position works out well. The position is a new attempt to join
the work of the local Council of Economic Education with our Econ
department. The down-side is that it's really soft money, and the
person coming in will be needing to raise their salary for the econ
education half, as I understand it.

Also, you could get tenure, doing econ ed type stuff--we're giving much
more than lip service these days to the "scholarship of community
outreach" and styling ourselves "an urban grant" university, of service
to the city as the land grant schools have been to the ag interests.

It is a city school, with the students disproportionately older (average
age=29), working, parents, first generation college students, and of a
wide range of academic backgrounds and abilities. Portland is a very
white town; within that context, black students and Native Americans
have a pretty well-established presence on campus.

It's also a poor school, and every week I learn more concretely what
this means, in terms of resources and salaries and a growing obsession
with external funding.

If anyone wants to ask me anything more, just e-mail me, or if you'd
like to contact the Chair (who's on the hiring committee), She is Helen
Youngelson-Neal ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

[PEN-L:4114] JOB OPENING FOR POLITICAL ECONOMIST

1995-02-12 Thread THOMPSON

I would like to bring to your attention a position in the
Vassar College Economics Department which is listed in the
February J.O.E. Although the Dean has authorized hiring
for a 1 to 3 year visiting position at this time, the
position is available in order to replace me as I will be
spending the next 5 years as Dean of Studies at Vassar, so
the position could work out to more than three years for
the successful candidate. Indeed, it is not all that
uncommon for an individual to come to Vassar as a visitor
and work into a tenure track position over the course of
the visit when circumstances warrant it.

Our department teaches introductory, intermediate, and advanced
courses in Marxian Economics and Political Economy and I am
particularly interested in attracting someone who would like to
teach in this area, as these are principally the courses I must
set aside at this time. The specific content of these courses
is sufficiently flexible to accomodate the visitor's special
interests and strengths.

I would be pleased to discuss the position informally with
any interested individual. Please send your formal application
to the address listed in the advertisement, below.

Dear Feminist, Post Keynesian Progressive Economists:

A job opportunity open. Brief details are as follows:

Place: Department of Economics, Curtin University of Tech,
   Perth, Western Australia.

Job: Tenurable Lecturer in Economics (technically tenurable -
permanent - after three years; but this can be fastened
up, and noone I know has ever missed out on tenure if
  it is a tenurable job)

Teaching: (1) one or two large core undergraduate quantitative
  subjects (econometrics and/or math econs);
  (2) another subject like labor, international, macro,
micro, public, history of econ thought.

There is scope for teaching development: eg, I have started five
new units in the past three units.

Qualifications: hold or nearly holding a PhD in economics

Pay: $41,574-$49,370 Australian (Plus salary supplementation)

How to Apply: Send letter of application, any publications/papers,
and names/addresses/fax/email numbers of 3 referees
by the 13 January 1995. (Ref number: 1882). However,
I would apply ASAP as I might be informally interviewing
some of the candidates at the ASSA conference in early
  January 1995.

Details: Inquiries: contact Ian Kerr, email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 (fax: +61-9-351-3026; Tel: +61-9-351-7722)
Applications quoting reference number [Ref 1882], and
including the names and contacts of three referees should be
  submitted to the

  Administrative Officer
  School of Economics and Finance
  GPO Box U1987
  Curtin University of Technology
Perth. Western Australia 6001. (reverse lines 3 4)

by 13 Jan 1995 - but preferably earlier!

Airfares and removal expenses for family will be provided.

Perth is one of the most beautiful cities in Australia, especially if
like open spaces, swimming, bush walking, camping close by; it has
a bit of "culture" and excellent library facilities at Curtin and the
other universities. Most of us receive about $4,500 for conference and
book purchases a year; plus there are many opportunities for applying
for $7,000 - $20,000 for research. We also get other research monies
for publications and conference presentation etc (possibly $2,000 per
year for a couple of each).

Good luck, Phil O'Hara, Econ, Curtin Uni: email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PS: Lecturer is similar to Assistant professor. But I think the tenure
conditions are better here than in the USA. Long service leave after
7 years; 6 months outside study leave every three years.

Job opening

1994-07-21 Thread PHILLPS

The following job has opened up (somewhat late in the game) here
at the University of Manitoba in the Department of economics, a
department that is committed to "methodological pluralism" and welcomes
applications from economists of all stripes. The official announcement
reads:

The Department of Economics invites applications for a full-time probationary ap
pointment at As
probationary appointment at Assistant Professor rank in the area of
Environmental Economics and the Economics of Sustainable Development
beginning 1 August 1994. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D.
in economics with a stron theoretical and/or policy orientation and have
demonstrated competence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate
levels and research. The successful applicant will be expected to
develop a program of courses in Environmental Economics and the
Economics of Sustainable Development and to take advantage of the
presence of the International Institute for Sustainable Development
in Winnipeg and the Natural Resources Institute at the University of
Manitoba. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Applications with curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference shoul
should be sent by 15 July 1994 to Professor John Loxley, Head,
Department of Economics, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg,
Manitoba R3T 2N2.

The announcement goes on to point out that we are an equal opportunity
employer, Canadian citizens and permanent residents get first shot,
the university is a smoke-free environment ("save for specially designated
areas) etc.
HOWEVER, this position is funded by the employment equity fund which
means we must staff it with someone who fits into the underrepresented
groups which in Canada are legally defined as Women, Aboriginals,
Visible minorities, and the Handicapped. I perhaps may point out
that the position was created by the resignation of a female staff
member who accepted a position elsewhere. Our department is,
unfortunately, overly male despite years of trying to rectify this.

If you are interested, please e-mail John Loxley AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
as we must make a decision quickly if we are to staff the position by
September.

Sorry, I didn't see Sid's announcement already posted on pen-l about the
job opening at SFU. I've just signed on after being away for a few days. In
any case, please contact me if you have any questions or want a student's
view of the program.
