Let me correct myself - he is clearly ennumerated as M for Male - but still
named Alana. Maybe I saw him
as F on one of the transcribed index sites.

Anyway, here's the page with the Edison Family:

As a genealogist for 39 years, I have found that census takers were not
always big on spelling. Since young Edison was called Al and not Tom, no
doubt that they were trying to spell ALVA, an odd name even in that day.

Re: [Phono-L] Edison's Birthday!

2012-02-14 Thread Jim Cartwright
I ask Jeff to mention that the C-2 played through the R-2 sounds best on
diamond discs when the filter mounted under the motorboard of the C-2 is
disabled but see he didn't include this when describing the Edison 165th
Birthday gathering. The filter has been made switchable in or out.
For 78s, it may sound better in the in position but both electrically
recorded as well as acoustically recorded diamond discs sound incredibly
good with the filter out. Some of the acoustics sound almost electric.
(For some reason, though the dance band acoustically recorded diamond discs
sadly have much less bass solidity than those of classical music which is
a detriment to the reproduction of Adrian Rollini's wonderful bass sax on
Golden Gate Orchestra (nee California Ramblers) acoustic diamond discs!)

eating Mexican food, we gathered at the “Phonograph Gallery,” part of the
addition under construction to Jim’s home, still a work in progress as
evidenced
by the boxes stacked on the staircase, listened to diamond discs played
using
the turntable, tonearm pickup designed by Theodor Edison of an Edison

repair
shop) connected to the phono jack of an Edison Model R-2 Radio (which has
the
same chassis loudspeaker as the C-2) which provided an astounding quality

quantity of sound for circa 1928 audio equipment. Here is the diamond disc
play
list, all contemporaneous with the Model C-2 Radio-Phonograph Combination:

Saying that no birthday celebration should be without cake, Nancy brought
delicious homemade cinnamon cupcakes which were greatly enjoyed. We also
played
one electrically recorded Blue Amberol cylinder on the Opera compared the
sound of diamond discs played acoustically on a SI-19 (Sheraton Inlay) with
Edisonic reproducer on a Pathe Gothic Art Model Actuelle, neither of which

came close to the sound of the Edison electronics! The evening ended with
the
singing of “Happy Birthday Mr. Edison!”

It is a goal to establish an Austin Club...one of these days.

[Phono-L] Edison's Birthday! - The history revisionists deserve a counter attach of facts.

2012-02-11 Thread Tim McCormick
In reply to:
http://gizmodo.com/5884270/celebrate-thomas-edisons-165th-birthday-with-a-cr
ash-course-on-his-life

Folks,

The history revisionists deserve a counter attach of facts. Andrew
Liszewski and his ilk should be required to obtain an education by
performing their own research. It is too easy for unengaged historic
revisionists to feed upon their own internet web surfing culture of
non-effort. Everyone knows Thomas Edison was not a perfect human being. He
had a boat load of faults. What Thomas Edison did have was a vision and the
drive to create the modern world we live in. He did that through a research
and development factory powered by 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.
Mr. Liszewski would have you think that Steve Jobs was an inventor - nothing
could be further from the truth. I'll admit that Jobs and Edison had
several things in common, both were great marketers and salesmen. Where
Jobs gained financial riches though the Apple II computer (created by his
partner) by virtue of a spreadsheet program he had no hand in developing,
and enjoyed recent success in producing electronic entertainment platforms
by adopting applications of other people's creations, Job's couldn't invent
worth a darn. Have our lives changed for the better because of the iPhone?
Weren't there Cell phones, PDA's and Rio MP3 players before the iPhone? Was
it such a masterful jump forward in the evolution of mankind to combine the
three platforms?

Edison was the right man at the right time in history. A Workable
and Usable electric light bulb is just one of a thousand creations.
Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville discovered a way of tracing the human
voice onto a piece of paper coated with lamp black, but it took Thomas
Edison to create an industry of Phonographs to play back a voice in
everyone's home. We credit Lee de Forest as the inventor of the Audion, the
first successful vacuum tube amplifier, yet this invention was based upon
the Edison effect discovered by the Edison Labs. Edison has had a profound
influence upon our world and still does. To deny it is to deny truth
itself.

Celebrate Edison's Birthday by reading his birthday special edition
of In The Groove.

[Phono-L] Edison's Birthday February 11th

2010-02-10 Thread Jim Nichol
Edison's Birthday is 2/11/10. If you have one of the Edison
employee birthday pins, be sure to wear it.

By the way, guess what famous inventor is pictured on Wikipedia's home
page today?

2007-02-10 Thread Andrew Baron
Say, that sounds like a great way to maintain good acquaintance with
the collection and expand one's awareness of its rich content at the
same time.

I like your centennial ritual.

Well hey, if anyone calls you goofy for celebrating Thom's b-day,
just tell 'em This is nothing. I know this one guy who used to
have 100-yr. birthday parties for his RECORDS. Yep, that'd be
me. Sure, they didn't involve cake and balloons, and often the
host was the only participant, but they were a great excuse to
study up on the artist (when known), play some similar recordings,
and maybe pull an unsuspecting passerby into the joy of this great
hobby. And the whole exercise makes celebrating Edison's birthday
seem quite normal by comparison, which is handy.

I'm not a smoker, but that's how I picture it if you really want
 to do it right.

I try to do something goofy every year on 2-11 as well. It
usually involves playing Let Us Not Forget (which I got when I was
14 or 15), and other selections. I've been doing this for about
30 years already! I guess we're all a little nuts.

That'd do it! But without the odour, you'd have to figure out some
way of driving everyone else out of the room.

I'm just talking about one of the little 3-inch Edison metal banks,
not the life-size Ron Haring busts! Nothing creepy about that.

I did take a Ron Haring Edison bust to work at GE one year for
Edison's birthday. (I believe GE should celebrate Edison's birthday,
but I'm the only person who ever does). Later in the day I found
Edison wearing a hard hat!
