You know that vim exists for windows, right? and that it can be used for
large changes as well? (I use vim as my primary editor :-)

I was a big proponent of HS for the longest time until I played around
with Visual Slickedit.  I very quickly switched and never looked back.
VS is infinitely more feature rich than is HS.

I have been using Quanta + ever since I discovered it.  Try it you'll like it 
too.  

Features include (but not limited to) code completion, code insight, color 
coding, debug support, spell checking

It also has a very good project management system which can upload your 
project with one keypress.

It is part of the kdewebdev package.

Bluefish does that for HTML so it could be extended to PHP, I use it on 
Fedora and like it so far, color highlighting etc

I had problems compiling quanta on my redhat 7.1 box, I had to grab some cvs
files to fix it (Don't remember which files.. Probably whichever ones had
problems compiling - and the makefile).  Quanta is a great program, it's
basically a homesite clone for Linux.

Last time I tried it (about a month ago) the syntax highlighting was 
atrocious. I've always favoured quanta over bluefish but Redhat 7.3
seriously 
broke quanta. That only leaves vim (nedit is good, but has problems 
integrating with the KDE clipboard which renders it impotent).

I would have to say that Zend Studio is tops, and worth the money (if you got it).  
Lots of cool features that make coding easier like curly brace matching, f1 help to 
the manual, debugging, function parameters and types show as you type them (even user 
defined functions if the file is opened) etc.

There's a Zend Studio for-non-commercial use version available for 
free.  It's based on version 2.0 of the product, fully functional.

I'd like to use it but I don't use KDE (perhaps the libraries needed are 
not installed). Besides, an earlier post said that it's broken (?) in 
Redhat 7.3...

BTW, can it do search and replace in multiple open files? Does it have FTP 
capabilities?

Something rarely mentioned in these discussions on "PHP Editors", is FTP
capabilities.  That's something that is absolutely critical for me.  I
maintain several websites on different web servers.  As such, the ability to
log in and remotely edit sites is invaluable.  And no - downloading the
entire site, editing it, and re-uploading it isn't an option.

Here's some Linux ones that satisfy this requirement:

1.  Zend IDE:  Nice, but $$$ is the big inhibiting factor.
2.  Quanta:  its implementation remains a bit buggy.  Perhaps the next
version will be better.
3.  jEdit:  the Windows version has a plugin to do FTP, so I would assume
the Linux version does too.

Can anyone else add to the list of Linux-based FTP-enabled PHP-supporting
editors?

Last time I tried it (about a month ago) the syntax highlighting was
