I found it hard to believe that there were 1082 submissions from 43 countries. Thanks for a great WPPD and see you next year. James

[pinhole-discussion] Stranger Inside Pinhole in the movies.
Hi all, I just got through watching a movie called Stranger Inside. I didn't see the entire film, but to make a long story short its about a young black girl in a women's correctional facility. One of her fellow inmates is pinhole photographer, and she uses one of Eric Renner's cameras. This is the only time I have ever seen pinhole depicted in a movie. Does any one know of any other examples of pinhole in films? BTW the movie looked pretty good, so there are other reasons to watch it other then the pinhole. James
Re: [pinhole-discussion] Panorama characteristics?
CJ, I believe that it's the ratio between the hight and the width of the film that makes it a panoramic, but I'm not sure where image becomes a panorama and not just a wide picture. I'm sure that some one will let us know. I do know that a 6x9 image not a panorama, but a 6x12 is. My guess is that the width has to at least double he hight of the image. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Images in show
OK folks here is my fancy way I convert to a monotone to control contrast in Photoshop. I know that this works with PS 5.5, 6, and 7, or any version that uses adjustments layers. I'm using version 7. Open a RGB file in Photoshop. When trying this out try to use an image that has lots of different colors. Then open your Layers pallet and hit the Layer adjustment button at the bottom. When you do that you will be given a bunch of options, choose Hue/Saturation, then click OK. After hitting OK go to your Layers options drop down menu and choose Color. You will want to do the same process, but with a few variations. With the same image hit Layers adjustment button and gain pick Hue/Saturation, but before you hit OK slide the Saturation slider to the left. Your image should now look black and white. Now hit OK. Now double click on your first Adjustment layer window, and up pops your Hew/Saturation window. Now you have all the control over the entire image or just over one color. Leave the Edit: menu at Master and slide Hue slider back and forth or slide the Saturation slider, you will affect the whole image, or pick a color from the Edit menu and just affect that one color. I hope this is understandable and that you find this useful. If you have any questions please email me off the pinhole list so we don't tie it up. James

Any way we are almost to 500 members. Thats a great milestone. I am going to be in Santa Fe the week of October 7th-13th taking a wookshop on color management. If any one lives or is planning to be in Santa Fe lets try to get togeather. Also I have been trying to get in touch with Kurt Mottweiler, and all I have is his old e-mail address, pinh...@laplaza.org. If soom one has his new address could they pass it along. Thanks James
[pinhole-discussion] Pinhole admin stuff
Hi all, Sorry, for personal reasons I have been out pretty much out of the loop the last few months. I have returned. I have recieved a couple of messages of folks who want to get off the list, or want to edit there account. Please remember that you can do most of this yourself at: http://www.???/discussion/members.php. If you are still having probles or can't do what you want to do, then get in touch with me. Also please describe what you are trying to do and what were the results. I was very please to see that there are 488 members on the list. Below you will find the Rules of the List. If you have any questions please contact me at pinh...@jameskellar.com. Thanks James Kellar PINHOLE DISCUSSION MAILING LIST Document dated: August 31, 2001 PURPOSE OF THE LIST: The purpose of the pinhole discussion mailing list is the discussion of any and all aspects of pinhole photography. All messages sent to this list should be related to pinhole photography. THE RULES OF THE LIST: There are no specific rules for participating on this list. But everyone is reminded that list membership is a privilege, and list members are expected to treat each other with proper respect. Personal attacks or flames will not be tolerated and can get one banned from the list. If you encounter any problems of any kind in using the list, please notify James Kellar at ja...@kellar.com or Gregg Kemp at gregg.kemp@p at ???. Please do not send problems you may encounter to the list. The only ones who can help you solve these problems are James and Gregg. REPLYING TO POSTINGS: Messages sent to you via the discussion list are set up to behave differently from messages sent to you by an individual. When you reply (using your email program's reply feature) to messages you receive from the list, your reply will automatically be directed back to the mailing list and NOT to the person who sent the message. The list program creates a Replyto: discussion-list@p at ??? line in the mail message header. This tells your email program to send the message back to the list rather than the person who originally sent the message. In order to send a private message back to someone who sent a message through the list by replying, you must change the To: address from pinhole-discussion@p at ??? to the individual's e-mail address. Note that if someone puts the list in the Cc: field rather than the To: field, the reply may go to the sender rather than the list. For this reason, it is ALWAYS a good idea to check who you are sending an e-mail to before sending it. ATTACHMENTS Attachments are files that are attached to an email message. The email system is designed to send messages using standard ASCII character set. Attachments are a way of sending a content that uses characters outside of the ASCII standard. Attachments are not welcome on this list. They are large. They usually can only be accessed with a specific program. They can unintentionally carry viruses. A significant portion of the list is unable to use attachments. Please do not send attachments to the list. All email to the list should be send as plain text. This is the one and only standard used by all computers and all email programs. Some email programs by default send email messages as attachments, the MS Outlook Express and Netscape's Communicator are often set up to send all email messages as two attachments, one in plain text (ASCII) and one in 'rich' text (html format). If you use these programs please change your setting so that your messages will be sent as plain text ONLY. WARNINGS, VIRUSES, TAXES, END OF THE WORLD ETC There are always a number of hoaxes traversing the net, where one is urged to email an urgent warning message concerning some catastrophic new virus, government policy, etc to everyone you know These are almost always hoaxes. Do not send copies of these to the list, even if you are sure it is legitimate. SUBSCRIBING, UNSUBSCRIBING, and changing PREFERENCES 1) go to: http://www.p at ???/discussion/ 2) enter your email to enter your account (this is near the bottom of the page), 3) on your account page, make any changes and then enter your password to make the changes effective. The following was published in the Bloomington Photography Clubs newletter. I know that I'm a member, but I did'nt even ask them to write this. BTW-I'm known as the pinhole nut by most of the club. As of late Monday evening , April 30, the www.pinholeday.org site of the First Worldwide Pin-hole Photography Day had 66 images posted on it. These 66 pinhole photographers were from 19 countries from Hong Kong Japan in the east to the Americas in the west. Thirty-five entries were from the United States. A variety of good photography, mostly BW, but some color. The site is easy to navigate and loaded with pinhole info, like Pringle tubes seem to be the camera body of choice in New Zealand. Don¹t miss James Kellar¹s ³Death on Lake Lemon.² Great shot, James! While it probably won¹t make the cover of Field and Stream, X-Files may want to weave an episode around it. James

[pinhole-discussion] Death of the Zero 2000 well almost/
Well to day was pretty interesting, if not a bit depressing. I was in Indianpolis today shooting for latest printswap and boy was today windy. I had just loaded my Zero 2000 with a fresh roll of film when a gust of wind came along and blew off my hat. When I went to retrieve it, along came another big gust and blew over my tripod with my Zero 2000 atop. To tell you the truth, while the camera is now in about 5 different parts, it broke in places where is should be easy to put back togeather. Zernike your design even works well when it hits the concret. The whole day was not a hole loss becasue I went to see Ansel Adams: A Life s Work, at the Eiteljorg Museum of American and Western Art. If you live near Indiana I strongly suggest you see the exhibit. I have seen a couple pieces of his work in the past, but never a large group of his work other than in a book. Boy could he keep the details in the shadows. BTW I have heard that he did use a pinhole every once in a while, and I have even see one example. James

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD Steering Committee more info
Hi all, Here is a bit more inof on the steering committee. The members of the committee are as follows: Larry Fratkin, Guy Glorieux, Jean Daubas, Gregg Kemp, Zernike Au, Guillermo Penate, George Smyth, James Kellar and Ed Levinson* At this time we have noleader of this group, but I'm sure that one might pop up at any time. If you have been on the discussion list for a while I'm sure you know everyone on the committee. If not, we have all had a strong interest in pinhole photography for many years, and have been members of this list for a long time. If you have asked a question on the list, chances are one the names above answered your question. If you are new to the list you might ask what is the World Pinhole Photography Day? I don't remember who started, but some one in this group brought up the subject of having one day out of the year devoted to promote pinhole photography. That is any one who wished to participate, inside or outside the discussion group, could take a photograph using a pinhole camera during a 24 hour period. Photogaphs taken durning this time frame could be then uploaded to the web for all the world to see. If you want to become more involved it the WPPD, Guy Glorieux will be asking for volunteers on servral projects. There will be lots of work to go around. So what's next? I have been asking for suggestions on servral issues that deal with WPPD over this last week. Sunday night I will send your suggestions to Gregg Kemp who has built a polling web page. As soon has Gregg has it finished he will announce it to the list membership, and everyone can then go vote on such things as, what day this event will happen, or what shall we call this WPPD thing. Plus other issues. The logo issue will be addressed at some future date. Any way thanks to every one who sent in suggestions, opinions, and other comments. As soon as the WPPD polling page opens, remember to go vote. Thanks James *Ed Levinson is not a offical member of the committee, he will be keeping an eye on us and throwing in his 2 cents worth in every once in a while.
[pinhole-discussion] WPPD?
Hi all, As usual we have lots of issues here everyone has there own opinions about each issue. I have talked to Gregg Kemp and he has agreed to put up a web page where every one can vote on each of the issues. I believe that this is the only way that we will get any thing done. So here is what I would like to do. 1. Send me a list of any issues you would like to see voted on, and then a list of possible answers to the issues. Example NAME OF THE DAY: 1. World Pinhole Day, 2. World Pinhole Photography Day, 3. World Wide Pinhole. DATE OF PINHOLE DAY: 1. April 29th 2. April 15th. 3. December 25th. NAME OF THE WEB PAGE: 1. worldwidepinholephotographyday.com 2. pinholeday.com 3. Any other issues that you would like to see brought up that deals with a day to promote pinhole photography. 2. If you have come up with a logo e-mail me the logo. Make sure that each logo is either a jpg, or a gif, try to make the logo under 80k, and name the logo the following, pinholelogoyourname1.jpg. Example pinholelogojohndoe1.jpg or pinholelogojanesmith2.gif When you send your list of issues please use the subject header WPPD ISSUE VOTE. If you are e-mailing me a logo use the subject header WPPD LOGO VOTE.If you are going to send me both, then please send me 2 e-mails with right subject header. If you do not use the right subject header I can not promis that your issues and or logos, will be included in the vote. Do this even if you have all ready sent in any suggestions. I would like to get this to Gregg by Saturday, Febuary 24, 2001 so get your submissions in by this coming Wednesday, Febuary 21. I know this is kinda of a pain, but it is the only way that I believe is fair and that we can do this in a timely manor. Thanks for your help. James
Re: [pinhole-discussion] WPPD Logo and Money
Lets hold on a bit. I don't mind paying $13 for the first year, but before we start getting ahead of yourselfs. Remember this might happen this year and then fizzle out next year. How about if I take care of the first year, and then we see what happens. It's been a long time ago but, I did collect $8.00 from the membership when it looked like we were going to have to pay for having a non advertized discussion list. Thanks to Gregg Kemp who came up with the alturnitive that we are all using now. BTW Thanks Greg. I then asked if we wanted to put this and other future funds towards becoming a Contributing member to the Pinhole Resorce. At that time I was hoping to collect between $50-$75 and I would kick in the rest, but all I recivied was $4. To tell you the truth I had forgotten about this until Guy suggested sending me money. [pinhole-discussion] Monthly Mailing
Hi all, Well it's time againg for my monthly mailing. Lots of good conversation going on in the discussion group. I hope we can decide on a date for Pinhole Day. Maybe a couple of folks can get togeather and organize it. It sounds like fun, and I would do it but I'm buzy with the print swap. We now have 361 members on the list, and we keep growing bigger every day. I've been a member of a couple other photo related discussion groups, and all I can say is that this group is the best. Every one pat yourselfs on the back. James -- James Kellar Manager, Pinhole Discussion List pinh...@jameskellar.com http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/pinhole-discussion http://www.jameskellar.com PINHOLE DISCUSSION MAILING LIST Document dated: February 15, 2001 PURPOSE OF THE LIST: The purpose of the pinhole discussion mailing list is the discussion of any and all aspects of pinhole photography. [pinhole-discussion] Krappy Kamera Contest
I just heard back from the SohoPhoto Gallery, and I must say I was a bit disappointed to learn that none of my work made it in the show. I hope that someone from the group had a bit more luck. Let us know if you got a print in. I can't wait to see some of the prints that made it. James

[pinhole-discussion] Print Swap cut off date.
So far we have gotten 24 members who are interested in the latest pinhole swap. It looks like we might have to hove at least 2 groups. I will be cutting off entrance to the swap on January the 17th. I believe that should give every one who is interested enough time. Remember e-mail me at prints...@jameskellar.com, if you want to join the swap. James
[pinhole-discussion] ***Print Swap Announcement***
Hi all, By all the messages about the up coming print swap it looks like we have lots of interest. I know that most every one who has shown some interest has all ready sent a message. But because of all the mail I get I have set up a new e-mail address that deals with the print swap only. This is about the only way I can keep up with the swap. Also this will keep the discussion list from being over run with print swap messages. I hope this is not to much of a pain. So starting today, if you want to be involved in the up coming print swap please email me at the following address. prints...@jameskellar.com James

[pinhole-discussion] December Mailing
Hi all, Hello all, and a warm welcome to all who have just joined the list. As many may remember last month I asked if I should keep this monthly mailing. The response was positive. So unless I get a diffret response some time in the future, you can look foward to this message in your mail box once a month. We now have 324 members who subscribe to the list world wide. I know that not every one on the list celebrates the up coming holidays, but this is good time for me to thank every one for all of the great conversation and advice. Keep up the good work. I know I've said this before, but remember that the list does not belong to Gregg and myself, it belongs to you. I would also like to announce that I will be organizing a print swap in the up coming year. If your interested in participating start sending me your ideas. Go out a take a pinhole photo. Ed, Great images as usual. I all so just got through reading your newest article on pinhole photography, Pinhole's Feminine Mystique. The only thing that I found wrong about the article is you have only published 3 of them this year. I know that you are pretty busy but I do enjoy them and look forward to reading the next one. If by chance others don't know about Ed's commentary on pinhole photography go to http://www.p at ???/diary/Levinson/2000_03.php. [pinhole-discussion] November Mailing
Hello everyone, This is just my monthly message to say hello to everyone on the list, and to welcome all of the new folks who have joined the list in the last month or so. We now have 317 members. I believe that things have settled down from the move that we made well over a month ago. I guess that the only think new that I have is my e-mail and web addresses has changed. If you still have my e-mail address at ja...@kellar.com, and my URL at http://www.james.kellar.com. Please change me to respectively to pinh...@jameskellar.com and http://www.jameskellar.com. Just send an e-mail to pinh...@jameskellar.com, with a YES, I want the monthly E-mail, or NO, I don't, in the subject line. If you want to add your reasons in the body please do.
