indeed, but I don't remember what the consesus is. I propsed to just
compile librtmp.a with -PIC, but I'm not sure if everyone agrees here?

You said previously that you prefer to wait for upstream to take the
shared library patch.

Upstream said, that compiling with -fPIC is what he suggests and that
this will only cause very minor performance degrations (you need to do
symbol relocation a single time per process or use prelink ;) ).

IMHO we should simply build librtmp with -fPIC

Cool, I have enabled librtmp support in the master.snapshot branch of 
our ffmpeg git and it works (i.e. it compiles)!

me?  If this is because I maintain man-db, I don't want to be CCed on
