Yes, although it could be redundant to some, for sure it wouldn't do
any harm to explicitly remind users about that.

I do some packaging in the Debian Gis Team. And there it is just one or

I certainly won't stop anyone that wants to do this. I can also help
in applying patches (and uploading, if you need sponsoring). But the
hard part, creating useful tasks in the first place, is what I failed
to do. Hopefully you can succeed where I didn't.

I wonder if the tasks have any use as-is and maybe we should just
publicize them a bit more so that users can tell us what they miss.

I updated the mplayer2 section and added mplayer to the dropped section (I also
slightly edited the mpv description). They all probably need some proof-reading
though.

Also, I noticed that a lot of the changes mentioned are mostly relevant to
wheezy (e.g. lame, x264, libav, xvidcore, ...), so maybe the fact that the
changes presented are not only relevant to jessie should be mentioned (the first
paragraph kinda does this, but IMO it's not very clear).

Also^2, the libav section IMO should be more about what version are we going to
release and what new changes it brings since wheezy. This can be compiled from
libav release notes [0] [1] [2], though I'll leave that to the libav maintainer
judgment. The fact that we switched from ffmpeg is, I think, pretty clear to
everyone already.

I'd intend to mail it in the early afternoon.

Will you send a draft to this list before that?

I added Flowblade - I sure hope my edit didn't mess up with your later
commit, Allesio (your lock had expired when I did it).

Great text!

One detail that I find relevant for us to mention is that recent Calf no
longer provide LADSPA plugins. That is not a dropped package nor is
it a broken functionality. Main reason I find it important for us to
mention is that MLT is poorly documented, and upstream web pages lists
Calf plugins as possible filters, which easily causes confusion (it did
for me, several times!).

I suggest either adding a subsection for dropped LADSPA plugins, or
(better, I think) rename to the more generic LADSPA plugins and LV2
plugins.

Thanks for the update. I do have a comment about the last two sentences:

Note that while mplayer2 adds a few new features, others (such as mencoder)
have been dropped as well. Also note that mplayer2 is not maintained upstream
 anymore (differently from e.g. mpv).

I'm not sure if it makes sense to mention its upstream support status,
because you might ask the question well, why do you keep it then in
the first place?. Fact is that Debian is going to support the package
for wheezy, and the statement as written is rather confusing.

Also, I noticed that a lot of the changes mentioned are mostly relevant to
wheezy (e.g. lame, x264, libav, xvidcore, ...), so maybe the fact that the

FWIW, I personally think we should not mention any of lame,
xvidcore, x264 or mplayer2. All of these packages are already in
stable, so the text as current is not exactly news.

Also, I'm a bit weary with advertising that Debian now ships with
fancy modern decoders, because I fear of trolls that ask questions
about legality, patents, etc. I've therefore avoided references
regarding that in my proposed text for libavcodec/libav.

Also^2, the libav section IMO should be more about what version are we going
 to
release and what new changes it brings since wheezy. This can be compiled from
libav release notes [0] [1] [2], though I'll leave that to the libav
 maintainer

Exactly. I've just updated the section.

BTW, the maintainer of libav is (currently) the pkg-multimedia team ;-)

I suggest we invite the maintainers of MLT, GStreamer, Phonon and Xine

Wheezy. They are not in the Debian Multimedia Maintainers team (or at
least I don't think so) but changes there greatly affect multimedia for
our users, and I can only see such invitation as a friendly vibe :-)

Would be great with a section on progress in ways to fetch online videos
- i.e. youtube-dl, quvi and clive → cclive. Again I think that's mostly
outside of our team but used in e.g. mpv. I guess VLC also has such
features embedded.

I see an entry about x264 having entered Debian. Probably relevant to
mention also VP9, de265 and Opus codecs (and Celt codec been dropped?).

I didn't even notice it, looks amazing. Yeah, definitely worth a mention!

Not mine but probably worth mentioning that a slew of LADSPA stuff has

jalv+naspro. Also Calf has dropped support for LADSPA. Reason I care
about LADSPA is that MLT framework has support for that but not LV2.

Agreed, the LADSPA thing is a pretty important one.

Should we also think about stuff relevant to include in release notes,
then there is definitely the introduction of VP9 and Opus codecs.

Agreed.

I have checked the wiki page and since the Libav/FFmpeg part feels too
biased towards Libav. I will make a separate blog post for XBMC trying
to be more balanced.
I already blog about XBMC's state in Debian regularly [1] and it gets
aggregated to planet.d.o thus most of our users are probably aware of
the revived packages.
There is one post in the works about latest updates but I wanted to
give a few days to Libav to fix the VDPAU bug [1] hurting many users.

I have added a note about forked-daapd, which I think would be
interesting for users.

Cheers,

I think the Libav or FFmpeg in Jessie choice is artificial and I don't want to

IMO both Libav and FFmpeg should be let to enter Jessie and package

Technically it is now possible and I see arguments against letting FFmpeg into

Not sure what kind of information would be useful here. mpv v0.6.0 has just been

The mpv package description has a short list of changes from mplayer2, but I
haven't touched it in a while so it may be a little outdated. If needed I can
prepare a better list of improvements vs mplayer/mplayer2.

Also, worth mentioning maybe is that a) mpv's command-line options are not

there as well (also, considering that Debian uses libav instead of ffmpeg, some

 Bálint,

legitimize it by writing about XBMC in a context where it is shown as valid.

IMO both Libav and FFmpeg should be let to enter Jessie and package

We want neither to talk shit about FFmpeg nor praise Libav, most of us
simply think that is not appropriate to replace Libav with FFmpeg at
 this stage.

Personally I don't care whether FFmpeg will go down its own path to
 Debian Jessie succesfully or not.
We (many of us) just answered a question about which one among ffmpeg
and libav should be the provider for libav* libraries.
It is a non-binding, non-political opinion on the subject, and likely
no particular consequences will follow as it's mostly business of the
 security team.
I extended my answer in the original thread.

Presumably we are not going to maintain FFmpeg either way, so if the
release team is OK with having FFmpeg in Jessie, then it's fine for me
 too.

I think the current state of XBMC does not show the team in a good light
thus I'm not sure if it is a good idea to talk about in Bits.

 Could you please elaborate?
I would love to ship XBMC giving the same pleasant experience as
upstream's packages, but the closest thing I can provide in Debian is
stuck in experimental because ffmpeg can't enter testing. Libav works
fine in most cases, but VDPAU acceleration does not work with Libav
10+ and this bug have been reported against XBMC several times.
The next version of XBMC (now Kodi) dropped Libav compatibility code
completely which I don't agree with but it means more work on the
Debian packages if I want to make them work with Libav.

I strongly agree with some of Libav's goals like redesigning the API
to make it safer and cleaning the code, but keeping important features
such as VDPAU acceleration broken for a long time makes the fork less
appealing.

I think this situation is complex enough to not fit bits, maybe kBytes
from the Multimedia Team.

I have added a short paragraph about XBMC, making it as neutral as I could.

Cheers,
Balint

Given the current FFmpeg/Libav packaging tension, I'm having a hard
time to come up with a summary of the current state of affairs. One
option would be to say anything, which I would consider better than
the current text on the wiki that is two years late.

 Sure.

However, Ideally we would say something about the new
 features in Libav10 and Libav11.

 That would be amazing!

What's the timeline for sending out the announcement? Alessio, I take
it that you are driving this effort. Maybe you can set a tentative
deadline when you want to have it sent out?

I'm planning to release it in, say, ~1 week, next Saturday or Sunday.

Please pretty please do it as very soonest as possible! You might
already be too late by now if I understand it correctly that you need to
introduce some new packages, which then need to wait for ftpmasters to
have time to inspect it - and they might be _very_ busy this close to

Flowblade. It entered testing more than a year ago, but I don't think
it has been promoted much.

(...and I really should upgrade it to newest upstream release...)

Not mine but probably worth mentioning that a slew of LADSPA stuff has
been dropped: jackrack (and some other hosts I believe - just cannot
remember which) - seems the only independent host for LADSPA now is
jalv+naspro. Also Calf has dropped support for LADSPA. Reason I care
about LADSPA is that MLT framework has support for that but not LV2.

Should we also think about stuff relevant to include in release notes,
then there is definitely the introduction of VP9 and Opus codecs.

jackd1 can't be used with ladish, since we don't provide jack1dbus.
AFAIK, there's a patch somewhere, but it's simply not necessary, jackd2

in Debian Wheezy fully supports ladish and also cooperates fine with
 it.

What does this mean for jackd1? If it is enabled, is this worth
 mentioning?

jackd1 can't be used with ladish, since we don't provide jack1dbus.
AFAIK, there's a patch somewhere, but it's simply not necessary, jackd2
is just fine for that, so we leave jackd1 as is for the purists (no
dependency on dbus and the like).

IMHO, the paragraph about the no-self-connect patch can be removed
entirely, since we already do the right thing(tm). ;)

OK, I've replaced the paragraph with this:

Note that ladish uses the D-Bus interface to the jack daemon. This
means that jackd1 does not support it. The current jackd2 version
available in Debian Wheezy fully supports ladish and also cooperates
fine with it.

I have added some additional bits regarding Libav/FFmpeg there.

Yeah, I read the message between the lines ;-)

Problem is that saying you no longer need dmo in Wheezy implies you
need dmo in Squeeze which is misleading.

I believe that we currently deal with dmo by treating it as non-existent
and just close bugreports infected by it. I'd prefer similar here.

I've updated the mplayer2 parts now. I'm unsure if we should keep the

the LV2 and ladish section leaves me these questions unanswered:

 - is jack1 expected to work with session handling?
 - What does the user need to do to use the new session handling code?
 - What are the bug numbers for the remaining work?

According to [upstream guide] you start laditray and from there gladish
and/or other parts directly.

A few minor things I've noticed:

BitsFrom says LV2 version whereas Policy/LV2 says version 3.

How about a section on our team growing, perhaps explicitly mentioning
