Hi I use Ubuntu, 12.04, to stream my netflix. Not a problem.. I have a Belkin wireless router and a Samsung Blu-Ray player. The last windows computer in our mostly-Linux household has crashed and apparently died. Does not pass POST, does not collect anything - motherboard is probably dead. Main reason we had windows on that one was Netflix, which I long heard did not mesh with Linux. In the last year I've been reading about Netflix video playing capability on Linux (as at http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux-and-open-source/how-to-get-netflix-streaming-on-ubuntu-1210/ ); in the experience of people here who have tried it, does it work well? I'd like to set up the new entertainment-dedicated computer (just streaming, no games or such) as a Linux machine, sufficient for the task but keeping an eye on cost. So: Any recommendations on where (in the PDX-Salem area) to best look for such a beast? I know this sort of question comes up periodically, but it's probably good to revisit it occasionally. I'd be ok with installing the OS (probably Ubuntu) myself, but does anyone have any cautionary notes about what to keep alert for, in addition to Linux-friendy wireless cards? I must make sure that I don't screw up the tight transition to the next powerpoint presentation, but the session chair and I are working out alternatives. I may be able to run my webslides from the conference laptop, assuming that version of Firefox (or Internet Explorer) is configured to run javascript, flash animations, and local files. A better alternative is me bringing my own projector, putting it on a platform above the conference projector, and show slides using my own laptop and cabling, while shuttering the light output from the conference projector with a black box surrounding the lens. I will bring a libreoffice generated PPT, one slide, full screen black, for the conference projector. I am still looking for help with the setup, just in case something glitches the windoze machine or projector. I'm trying to contact the AV contractor for the conference, perhaps I can pay one of their people to hang around and fix unexpected problems. We still need to smash the Powerpoint monopoly, and replace bullet point list slides with more humane and effective presentations. And the new printer does not work with Win 2K... So I tried to copy the file to a flash/thumb drive. Every time I do that the computer reboots.. Will not copy the file... TaxAct claims it is not their fault.. No funny stuff on the file or program. Also, the program will NOT save the program anywhere but the original location... Now this may sound crazy to you.. I agree I need a hard copy of my tax return.. Haven't tried to send it to myself... Maybe that will work.. Or if anyone has any idea I would be grateful.. Besides, you still have to properly set up ssh correctly. Once that's done, why not take the extra step and set up /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny manually? Then use iptables to drop ssh attacks - as in DROP and REJECT. That way, the attacker gets no info on your server, and you don't have to fill up your logs. Also, denyhosts, fail2ban, sshguard all depend on generating a simple IP blacklist and properly configured logging (/var or other partition can get full). Attackers can also spoof their packet's source header. China bangs on my game server constantly, in addition to the various script kiddies. I very much doubt they will get in. Better to block everything and only let certain host and user ssh keys in. Just my 2 cents. Ed Thanks for the comeback... The file is a simple text file, delineated by line feeds. Using the typical shell grep command script such as: grep Side 2050 grep Side 2061 etc. results in a very slow execution time, since the 24 gig file has to be searched for each line of the script and I am finding this to be very laborious and time consuming, not to mention all the hits on the hard drive as the script grinds through each line. The power is restored and all is working normally. But I'd like to figure out why the battery backup failed. Recommendations on what to look at will be appreciated. The battery backup is a Belkin F6C325-SER, which is rated for 325 VA or 211 W. I've had this unit for quite a few years, possibly over 10. According to my Kill a Watt, my computer is drawing 1.40 A @ 118.2 volts (drifting between 117.9 and 118.4), and the Kill a Watt says 112 W. 118.2 V x 1.4 A = 165.48 VA. When the power failed I also had one monitor powered through the battery backup. I have no monitor plugged in to the battery backup at this time -- just in case it was the straw that broke the lead-acid battery's back. The monitor that was plugged in at the time of the power failure is currently drawing 0.29 A @ 118.2 V (similar voltage drifting as above), 24 W. 118.2 V x 0.29 A = 34.278 VA My other monitor is drawing 0.25 A @ 118.2 V, 20 W. 118.2 V x 0.25 A = 29.55 VA The battery was deemed to be working by a battery shop back in 2010. In theory I should be able to run the computer and both monitors. (112 + 24 + 20) W = 154 W.(165.48 + 34.278 + 29.55) VA = 229.308 VA Is there some rule of thumb that says one should only count on some percentage (less than 100) of the rated capacity of a battery backup? It allowed me to adjust the resolution to what I used in prior Ubuntu/Kubuntu installations but didn't allow saving that configuration for subsequent sessions. The save dialogue appeared but did not allow saving the Xorg config file. Even invoking nvidia-settings as root did not help. That meant I'd be forced to re-adjust back from the standard 640x480 each session. Not impossible of course, but a pitiful step backward from the easy NVidia configuration of Jaunty Lucid and Maverick. Even then, the display was corrupted when I invoked KDE's konsole app, perhaps because I had reconfigured the font size. I could hack all this. IBM ThinkPad T60 14 Laptop w/ Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83 GHz (Centrino Duo), 2GB DDR, 60GB, DVD / CDRW Combo, 802.11g, Windows XP Professional. I've been running various versions of Debian Linux on my refurbished T60 that I bought for $1500 back in '07. Initially, I had some challenges w. the ATI Radeo video adpater, Intel wifi chipset, Gigabit NIC, and suspend. But all of those issues have since been resolved in the mainline Debian / Ubuntu stream. Some things to consider... The Thinkpad is thee most solid built laptop I have ever used. I've been using my refurbished T60 as my everyday computer for 4 yrs. now w. nary a hardware problem. I just replaced the keyboard, which I got for free. There is also a known noisy fan bearing problem. It finally started happening on mine about a year ago. It hasn't affected the cooling ability of the fan. The fan can be easily replaced. I also upgraded mine to 4GB of RAM. For most of us, who aren't actually doing real computing or graphics intensive tasks, memory is going to be more important than CPU. The cpu in the T60 is higher performing than an ATOM but it uses more power. The key benefit of an ATOM processor, is it's low power consumption. I get approx 4 hrs on the stock battery, I would expect an ATOM based netbook to get double that. I have an extra battery I carry w. me that's easy to swap out. For any problem I've had be it software or hardware, I've been able to find the information I need fix it. Because there are lots of people out there running various versions of Linux on Thinkpads. There's 2 very good online resources for running Linux on Thinkpads: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ibm.html Also, Keith L has a neat thing he's done to the display that greatly increases the resolution! So, I say $350 is a good deal. I just bought a 15inch T61 from a guy on Craigslist for $450. If you don't want to buy it, let me know, because I will! _Mike Mike Here is the link.. https://mail.google.com/mail/h/7gz9363yjqh6/?v=cser=AIKcX55SzESZWo9COoesh0CtLhZY9txAvAst=50th=12e1935102c730b7 I have bought computers here before and been happy. They were new desktop that took Linux with no sweat. With laptops I was more concerned because, I have always heard they are a bit harder to get Linux on at times.. I think I have found a cheaper one.. Best Marvin ___ PLUG mailing list PLUG@lists.pdxlinux.org http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
