Two or three questions, depending on how you count.

The last windows computer in our mostly-Linux household has crashed and
apparently died. Does not pass POST, does not collect anything -

functioned as a monitor) and stereo.

Main reason we had windows on that one was Netflix, which I long heard did
not mesh with Linux. In the last year I've been reading about Netflix video
playing capability on Linux (as at

 http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux-and-open-source/how-to-get-netflix-streaming-on-ubuntu-1210/
 );
in the experience of people here who have tried it, does it work well?

I'd like to set up the new entertainment-dedicated computer (just
streaming, no games or such) as a Linux machine, sufficient for the task
but keeping an eye on cost. So: Any recommendations on where (in the
PDX-Salem area) to best look for such a beast? I know this sort of question
comes up periodically, but it's probably good to revisit it occasionally.
I'd be ok with installing the OS (probably Ubuntu) myself, but does anyone
have any cautionary notes about what to keep alert for, in addition to
 Linux-friendy wireless cards?

 Advice would be most welcome.

Black and white laser printers are quite inexpensive. I bought a

I don't know how much color printing you do, nor what type (plots and
diagrams vs. digital camera images) but these two factors should guide your
choice of printer. When you're ready to start looking try craigslist and go
visit The Printer Place on Powell Blvd. about SE 17th Ave.

The latter have used printers and can advise you on brands and models.
Very good folks there. I bought my color HP LaserJet on craigslist for only
$50 (and a trip to Washougal and back). Turns out it needed a new drum
 which
The Printer Place diagnosed and fixed for $130 so I have the equivalent of
 a
like-new printer for a reasonable cost, and I'm still on the set of
cartridges that came with it. When I need new ones I'll go to Cartridge
World; I've been using their toner cartridges for my LJ 5 for years with no
 problems at all.

 Happy printing,

 Rich

  Marvin,

Does this printer use a separate print head? If so, it might be clogged

I gave up my inkjet printer and use only laserjets (one monochrome, one

A better alternative is me bringing my own projector, putting

Hopefully, this will allow the next presenter to set up their

I am still looking for help with the setup, just in case something

We still need to smash the Powerpoint monopoly, and replace bullet

But that is a long term problem to solve separately from the
environmental problems we will address at the conference this week.

I apologise to the conference and the chair for making protest

[PLUG] Windows Question

2013-04-12 Thread Marvin Kosmal
HI

I know this isn't the Windows support group.

But, someone may know the answer..

Once a year, for the past 5 years, I fire up an old computer with Win 2K
on it and run TaxAct. It is a wonderful free program that runs on
Windows.. Have been using it for 5 years. I can't find a free Federal
Tax Program on Linux..

Anyway..

This year I had to buy a new printer.. And the new printer does not work
with Win 2K...

So I tried to copy the file to a flash/thumb drive. Every time I do that
the computer reboots.. Will not copy the file...

TaxAct claims it is not their fault.. No funny stuff on the file or
program.

Also, the program will NOT save the program anywhere but the original
location...

Now this may sound crazy to you.. I agree I need a hard copy of my tax
return..

Haven't tried to send it to myself... Maybe that will work..

Or if anyone has any idea I would be grateful..

I fell really bad having to admin I use Win 2K for tax...

Is there a good Linux tax program I should use NEXT year?

Denyhosts hasn't been updated in a while, and it depends on Python
which has its own security issues. Besides, you still have to
properly set up ssh correctly. Once that's done, why not take the
extra step and set up /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny manually?
Then use iptables to drop ssh attacks - as in DROP and REJECT. That
way, the attacker gets no info on your server, and you don't have to
 fill up your logs.

Also, denyhosts, fail2ban, sshguard all depend on generating a simple
IP blacklist and properly configured logging (/var or other partition
can get full). Attackers can also spoof their packet's source header.

China bangs on my game server constantly, in addition to the various
script kiddies. I very much doubt they will get in. Better to block
everything and only let certain host and user ssh keys in.

 Just my 2 cents.

 Ed

Thanks for the comeback...

I am only a user on the system I installed denyhost so I am limited on
what I can do..

[PLUG] Speakers make noise

Hi

New problem..

My speakers are making a 60 cycle snow noise.

Started yesterday.. Tried adjusting volume. No help.

As a last extreme measure I shut the computer off and powered down the speakers.

This morning I turned the speakers on the they were quite until I
turned the computer on.. Then the noise started again..

So I am thinking.. Capacitor failure on Mother Board or Power supple

Would that be a logical conclusion?

Possibly. I would first try driving the speakers from another device,
preferably battery powered, like a portable music player or radio. You
might also want to try using headphones with your computer.

I will look around and see if I have another device to drive speakers

Why not use FTP client or rsync from your home PC? ssh is a bit round
about to just transfer data (log into remote box then log BACK into
 home box).

The GT701 will allow outgoing connections such as FTP.

There are a number of FTP clients. I use gFTP and FireFTP (Firefox
add on) to transfer data to my web sites.

 - -Ed
 Hi..

Don't know much about rsync. But, I can probably install an FTP
server and do ftp. Will check out both..

 TIA

 Marvin

Why not both? SSH provides a simple and secure entry method. rsync is
a great backup tool and it can use the ssh protocol. No need for a
 full-blown FTP tool.

In order to use ssh through your router you need to configure your
firewall to allow communication through port 22 (or another port of your
choosing). A non-standard port is often chosen for security reasons.

You configure your receiver's ssh service to listen on the port you
chose and set up a log-in method. You can use a simple
username/password configuration or go with a public/private key login
 system.

Links like this show how to setup password-less ssh on the destination
 system:
 http://www.adminschoice.com/how-to-configure-ssh-without-password

Once you get your ssh access configured you simply issue a command like:

rsync -avh (src path) -e ssh -p (port number) username@(ip
 address):~/(dest path)

 ~Ryan

OK

I can use ssh and scp from my computer to the web server..

I can't ssh into the web server and then ssh into my home box from
the web server.

To start, almost all records in the file start with ^S. There are

because over a billion records will be retrieved.

Secondly I do NOT have 24+ gigs of memory, to load the file into RAM
 and search that way.

 Scott's suggestion:

grep -f /tmp/sides.txt bigfile.txt

Where sides.txt is a list of all items you'd like to search for,
 one per line.

might work, I will give it a try and see how well it executes.

I am thinking of setting up multiple grep commands, using about a
1,000 patterns to match in each grep command.

 To all:

This is a question on efficiently searching for text items in a large
 file 1 gigabyte in size.

I have a list of about 2 to 5 thousand items where an item is a couple
of text words such as Side 2050 and S is always in the starting
column, and have to search a large file around 24 gigabytes in size
for these items. The file is a simple text file, delineated by line
 feeds.

Using the typical shell grep command script such as:

 grep Side 2050
 grep Side 2061
 etc.

results in a very slow execution time, since the 24 gig file has to be
searched for each line of the script and I am finding this to be very
laborious and time consuming, not to mention all the hits on the hard
drive as the script grinds through each line.

I am aware of combining the grep into a pattern set, but then run into
command line length limitations. Is it best to go this way?

What is the quickest way to do this type of search, when large files (
 1 gig ) are involved?

Thanks for your tips, or suggestions.

 have about that.

I passed the first LPI test years ago, I'm sure it's no longer valid.
But back in the day it seemed like LPI or Redhat certification were
 the main choices.

I'd appreciate any feedback on this, but if all you have to say is
that certifications are worthless in general you can probably save

I think it could be useful from that perspective, regardless of how it

Re: [PLUG] Battery Backup Troubleshooting

2011-12-29 Thread Marvin Kosmal
On Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 4:53 PM, Richard C. Steffens rst...@comcast.netwrote:

I had a power outage this afternoon. I had saved my work beforehand and
was away from the computer at the time. When I saw the lights go out I
went to the computer to shut it down. It was already down and the
battery backup was not telling me it was dealing with a power failure.
The power is restored and all is working normally. But I'd like to
figure out why the battery backup failed. Recommendations on what to
 look at will be appreciated.

The battery backup is a Belkin F6C325-SER, which is rated for 325 VA or
211 W. I've had this unit for quite a few years, possibly over 10.

According to my Kill a Watt, my computer is drawing 1.40 A @ 118.2 volts
(drifting between 117.9 and 118.4), and the Kill a Watt says 112 W.
 118.2 V x 1.4 A = 165.48 VA.

When the power failed I also had one monitor powered through the battery
backup. I have no monitor plugged in to the battery backup at this time
-- just in case it was the straw that broke the lead-acid battery's
back. The monitor that was plugged in at the time of the power failure
 is currently drawing 0.29 A @ 118.2 V (similar voltage drifting as
 above), 24 W. 118.2 V x 0.29 A = 34.278 VA

 My other monitor is drawing 0.25 A @ 118.2 V, 20 W. 118.2 V x 0.25 A =
 29.55 VA

The battery was deemed to be working by a battery shop back in 2010.

In theory I should be able to run the computer and both monitors.
 (112 + 24 + 20) W = 154 W.(165.48 + 34.278 + 29.55) VA = 229.308 VA

Is there some rule of thumb that says one should only count on some
percentage (less than 100) of the rated capacity of a battery backup?

Thanks for hints, ideas, pointers, etc.

Hmm. Does that indicate that 1/2 load is what one should spec for? If
that's the case I need a larger capacity unit.

It was only a minute or so before I got to the machine. But if the
battery is worn out, it wouldn't have lasted that long.

I assume the software provides controlled shutdown with the time on the
  unit?

Actually, no. I don't have a hardware connection from the battery to the
 computer.

So. Next step is to take the battery to the battery store and see if
they can tell me anything about it's ability to hold a charge. I
probably bought it at Northwest Battery Supply. Sounds like a field trip
 is in order.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

In the event that it's the Belkin unit itself, what recommendations do
folks have for units with that capacity that also have hardware
connections my Ubuntu machine could use?

Hi

My last unit. Which I no longer have. I have nothing now..

Anyway, my last unit lasted exactly one minute. It's only job was to shut
down the computer in the event of a power failure.

Worked just fine. I never cruise the net or do work during a power
outage. So SHUT OFF THE COMPUTER..

A battery with a software connection to the computer. I figure it would be
a waste to not have that communication..

So the software that came with the power unit was instructed to shut off
the computer if the power outage lasted 60 seconds.

Found a commercial copy of 10.4 ubuntu. It booted and is installing fine.

So for some reason the copy burned at Clinic and the copy I burned at home

How strange.

If someone want to send me a sources list for Mint I will replace the

Should work??

 (yourusername)@(yourcomputername)# (a root level prompt)

or are you getting a prompt like this:

grub (the grub boot prompt, if you get this there is a hang up in the
 boot process or the installer)

This info will help us narrow down what might be happening.

Are you booting a live CD version or the installer only version?

Can you use shift+up-arrow or shift+page-up to scroll the screen up, to
 see
 any error messages?

It is possible your configuration isn't supported for X video mode with
 the
 default settings.

I would suggest if possible to try the recent live CD of Mint 11, or
possibly a recent version of Knoppix, just to see if it can boot and bring

 Very strange, indeed.

I would not find it unbelievable that my CD burner is going bad - the
machine is a bit over four years old and I have used the optical drive
heavily. So a bad CD from my end is entirely possible.

But then you burned a copy at home using your burner and it was
unreadable. That makes two bad burners in the mix here. The odds are
 now getting slimmer.

If we had this to do over again I should have just put the ISO image on
a USB stick and had you copy it directly onto your hard drive. Then you
would have been able to re-burn it using other hardware until you got a
 readable copy.

On the other hand, if I had a buck for every if and shoulda I could buy
and sell Bill Gates out of my petty cash drawer.

HI

I need to correct myself..

The bad burn is only in respect to my DVD reader...

On another machine, newer, it boots just fine. And I am assuming would
install.

What we should have tried at the clinic was putting the disk in someone
else's computer to see how it acted.

We did that with mine. Booted the WIN disk. So we assumed I was clean.
I am thinking my reader has issues.

Shows you how touchy those readers can be. And how I didn't do much of a
job of trouble shooting my own machine.

I am still waiting for someone to send me a copy of their Mint sources
list. Drop that in there and see if it will change distro and upgrade on

In the past, I've refilled my own cartridges with toner from
tonerrefillkits.com, but that is a little messy and time
consuming. Though their refill toner for most machines is
excellent, the Q6000 black toner comes out gray. So, I am
 looking for substitutes.

I've had OK luck with Cartridge World toner, but it isn't
much cheaper than original HP. I've had terrible luck with
Office Max branded substitutes - their red cartridge spilled
toner into the optical calibration paths, and on circuit
boards, and I had to disassemble the entire printer and
clean it one part at a time.

So, who is cheap and good for toner cartridges, especially

Anyone have any good recommendations on study materials for the Linux+

Amazon appears to recycle user reviews for available materials so it is
nearly impossible to tell for sure if the reviews one is reading even
applies to the book being viewed.

Budget is of concern so any expensive classroom oriented training is out of

The Free Rail Zone extends to the Lloyd Center, and a couple stops
later you're at the Convention Center. The Lloyd Center is free parking
and there's no way for them to know that you're not shopping. So just
drive to the Lloyd Center, park, and walk a couple blocks south to the
Max line. Take any Max train headed west and get off at the second stop
 after the Lloyd Center.

Or you could actually walk from the Lloyd Center to the Convention

install the latest NVidia driver. Not that it did much good. It allowed
me to adjust the resolution to what I used in prior Ubuntu/Kubuntu
installations but didn't allow saving that configuration for subsequent
sessions. The save dialogue appeared but did not allow saving the Xorg
config file. Even invoking nvidia-settings as root did not help.

That meant I'd be forced to re-adjust back from the standard 640x480
each session. Not impossible of course, but a pitiful step backward from
the easy NVidia configuration of Jaunty Lucid and Maverick. Even then,
the display was corrupted when I invoked KDE's konsole app, perhaps
because I had reconfigured the font size.

I could hack all this. I could install (as root) a prior xorg config
file which had the appropriate resolutions that I generated in Mepis
8.0. I could edit the fstab file to set up my preferred mount points.
But why bother? Those fundamental mechanisms, as well as the numerous
desktop bugs in Unity, should be fully operative in the installation of
any respectable release. Shuttleworth will sure alienate any potential
convert from Windows7 with this ungodly mess, and for what purpose?

I actually recommend against using .htaccess files for most sites,
unless you have very specific requirements about allowing lots of less
privileged users directly edit your web root settings. (It is rare
that you can't accomplish all the same things without .htaccess.)

In order to interpret .htaccess files, Apache needs to traverse every
single parent and ancestor directory of every document accessed to
check to see if the config file exists and if its settings have
changed. In addition, .htaccess files can be a source of security
 issues.

Marvin, once you get things working, consider moving those .htaccess
settings back into the vhost config, and then disable AllowOverride
(the setting which allows .htaccess files to work) entirely.

 Good luck,

I've been running various versions of Debian Linux on my refurbished T60
that I bought for $1500 back in '07. Initially, I had some challenges w. the
ATI Radeo video adpater, Intel wifi chipset, Gigabit NIC, and suspend. But
all of those issues have since been resolved in the mainline Debian / Ubuntu
 stream.

 Some things to consider...

The Thinkpad is thee most solid built laptop I have ever used. I've been
using my refurbished T60 as my everyday computer for 4 yrs. now w. nary a
hardware problem. I just replaced the keyboard, which I got for free. There
is also a known noisy fan bearing problem. It finally started happening on
mine about a year ago. It hasn't affected the cooling ability of the fan.
The fan can be easily replaced.

I also upgraded mine to 4GB of RAM. For most of us, who aren't actually
doing real computing or graphics intensive tasks, memory is going to be more
important than CPU. The cpu in the T60 is higher performing than an ATOM but
 it uses more power.

The key benefit of an ATOM processor, is it's low power consumption. I get
approx 4 hrs on the stock battery, I would expect an ATOM based netbook to
get double that. I have an extra battery I carry w. me that's easy to swap
 out.

For any problem I've had be it software or hardware, I've been able to find
the information I need fix it. Because there are lots of people out there
running various versions of Linux on Thinkpads.

There's 2 very good online resources for running Linux on Thinkpads:
 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki
 http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ibm.html

Also, Keith L has a neat thing he's done to the display that greatly
 increases the resolution!

 So, I say $350 is a good deal. I just bought a 15inch T61 from a guy on
Craigslist for $450. If you don't want to buy it, let me know, because I
