Jayant,

I do not know if you have done this, but goto YAST - Software
Management - Add Repositories

There you will find a PACMAN Repository, make that active and then
from YAST install mplayer win32codecs. This should ideally sort the
issues out.

I have followed this procedure to get video and audio files playing on

What is your alternative for businesses that have years of data

unwilling to go through the headache of data migration?

Hehe.. aare I was kiddin, anyways on a serious note.

People willing to or wanting to migrate users to OSS, can get the work
outsourced and make some money in the process!

Where there is a WILL there is Way, is what I believe. :D

I am sure, there would college students, professionals (read me many
more, though I am still learning my way in the QT world!) willing to do
such jobs. Migrate data from MS Access to MySQL or SQLite. Migrate (read

I am already in the process of getting one of my client use QT instead

on Windoze, it is one step towards freedom!

To address your question, you could connect to the internet from the linux
box, and use NATting to allow the Windows box to connect. Or, you could use
 a proxy server.

I have two machines too and my ISP offers pppoe. I am advised to get a router
which can do pppoe and I can be on DHCP behind the router. May be that could
be an option..

Yes, having a router can save you lot of trouble of setting up a proxy
/ firewall tweaking, etc.

But for a true enthusiast, I shall suggest, play around with the
firewall/proxy and if required a DHCP server to get both the machines
on the net.

Re: Re: [PLUG] BSNL Broadband Business Plans

2006-03-01 Thread Aditya Laghate
BSNL and their dynamic IP addresses.

We are hooked to the karve road exchange. We have our mail-gateway for
which we used this line.

All the mails from the dynamic IP addreses, went into the spam boxes
or yahoo. rediff, gmail bounced them back.

Reason: All of their dynamic ip addresses we managed to get for one
month were on the blacklist!!

So anybody thinking of putting their mail servers on BSNL be aware of
this problem.

Only solution is to shift to a static IP address, register it or use VSNL.

  Hi,
Try running alsamixer and check whether the channels are muted.

  -aditya

Already tried that. Master and PCM are at 100%. Those are the ones that
usually matter. AFAIK, the others that are of importance are sound hardware
 specific channels, such as:

 IEC958, IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA etc.
In my case, the first one, IEC958, is set to 0% and it's not adjustable.

 Card: Intel ICH5
 Chip: Analog Devices AD1985
 View: [Playback] Capture All
 Item: IEC958

The second one is set to 100% and is adjustable.

 Card: Intel ICH5
 Chip: Analog Devices AD1985
 View: [Playback] Capture All
 Item: IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA

I tried fiddling with /etc/modprobe.d/sound, no luck.
Even played with KDE sound system through KControlCenter. Tried disabling
sound system completely, tried OSS, autodetect, ALSA (the default). No luck.
Every time I make any changes and click on apply, it starts(/restarts) the
sound system. Then if I click on Test Sound, nothing happens and a moment
later a window pops up saying artsd crashed with SIGSEGV.

 Hmmm, seg fault?

Just now I deleted /etc/modprobe.d/sound and reconfigured sound with YaST. It
shows sound configured now but still nothing audible. It did make a small
scratch-like noise when I clicked on save settings.

After that I changed KDE sound system to autodetect and clicked on Apply.
It's showing a process bar that says restarting sound system. The bar moves
from 0% to 100% and then loops back to 0%... this is still going on.

 # ps -e | grep artsd
 8027 ?00:00:06 artsd
 8029 ?00:00:00 artsd

This despite doing `killall artsd` as root before starting KControlCenter. And
I made sure that killall certainly killed the running artsd with `ps -e |
 grep artsd`.

Now I don't understand why KControlCenter is starting 2 instances of artsd. I
ran `ps -e | grep artsd` as soon as I clicked on Apply in control center.
And even when the process bar was at 15% (in the 0th loop), I could see 2
 instances of artsd.

Oh, setting sound system to ALSA and then applying the settings causes the
process bar to appear only once instead of looping indefinitely, that makes
 some sense! :-(

Please please someone help me out. I've been behind this thing for almost 15
 days now...

 Thanks and Regards,
 Kapil

 Aditya,

This might be due the way the PCI scans work in 2.6.x.

One way to bind hw interfaces to /dev entries is to add HWADDR to the
interface config file. This works pretty well in RH/Fedora/Mandrake.

Re: [PLUG] Fwd: mail relay

2005-09-19 Thread Aditya Laghate
I am re-explaining my question.

Facts:
1) We have two offices A and B located on different parts on the globe
2) We have a registered domain example.com
3) We have a third party mail server contract. Let me call it M
4) domain name of M is example.com
5) I have to set up a mail gateway between A and M, let me call it G
6) domain name of machine is again example.com. Let me refer to this
domain name as gexample.com and domain name on mail server as
mexaple.com
7) I have three users, [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]
8) foo and foo1 sit in office A, foo2 sits in office B.
9) when foo sends mail to foo1, sendmail on G sees it as local mail
and asks procmail to deliver it locally.
10) When foo or foo1 wants to send it to foo2, I need my mail relay to
send this mail to M.
11) currently this does not happen, sendmail rejects it saying user
foo2 does not exist.

Now my question, can i use virtual users to help me clear this problem.

I cannot send all mail to M. I need to keep local mail on G.

Any ideas, thoughts, pointers?

I am using sendmail, procmail and fetchmail, FC 4.

You may suggest any other software combination, but please dont ask me
to change distro as that is not possible.

Hi,
It depends on which version of the kernel are u re-compiling? 2.4 or 2.6.

Since 2.6 u need not be root to compile the kernel (says my knowledge,
experts may differ).
i have looked up various sites to compile kernel, but the README file
in the source is the best. It gives u complete info on how to compile.

while compiling make sure u have the (prefer all ext2/3, fat, ntfs,
etc) file system built into the kernel and not as module. Else it will
never boot.

Also try and skim over the book Internals of a linux kernel. It gives
u a fair idea of what should u include and what needs to get compiled
as modules.

DO NOT add any un-wanted hardware support. Compile only the necessary things.

And most of the fun lies in compiling first, then successfully failing
and re-compiling till u get it correct. It helps u in lea ring the
internals of the kernel.

I called up exatt yesterday, they seem to very expensive compared to
Iqara and BSNL. The rates on the above site are ONLY FOR MUMBAI.

Their representative is expected to visit my house tomorrow.

Will keep u posted.

Re: [PLUG] Got Ubuntu Debian 5.04 oary Hedgehoge

2005-05-22 Thread Aditya Laghate
Well the only problem is that it does not include
support for MP3 files and other video files. (Am i
 wrong here?)

Rest all stuff GNOME etc is fantastic, but without MP3
support, its dangerous to distribute it to the general
 public.

Hi, I also received a set a few weeks back.

I shifted from Debian to ubuntu immediately.

Till date i had never used gnome, always KDE, maybe because it gave
the familiar desktop (read: similar to windoze). I am happy now that i
shifted to gnome.

Ubuntu has done a great job, they have packed the most necessary
things required for people who use the machine at home. For a
developer the packages need to installed separately.

The XMMS and mp3 plugin stuff, i am sorry but i dont remember if i
installed it later or it came with the distro.

All those wanting a good linux box, i urge u to shift to Ubuntu.

Regards
Aditya

I was going through the consultation paper yesterday and some very
interesting facts came to light.

all those interested in knowing the facts please go through the PDF at
the following link.

http://www.trai.gov.in/consultation%20paper-30th%20april%202004.pdf

From this it is evident that the prices of Internet access have
remained high only because VSNL has not played a fare game and has
been charging its customers exorbitant prices.

Please read page 19 to know how much VSNL has over-charged all its customers.
