That's the way I will be going. Thanks.

My 1TB drive I can put back on the telly - I don't need 1TB for a 200 CD

Ok, clearly understood, I've tested again and fullscreen option really
great, thank you !

SOME REMARKS ON THE USE :
- I understand that you don't have many alternative but switching the
presence of the title bar when you switch between now playing and main
view is a little strange. It could be a little better if it was possible
to stay in fullscreen.
- the "mobile layout" is strangely managed by this new fullscreen
option : if you activate the "mobile layout" during a fullscreen you
will be in fullscreen mode for ever and vice versa. I have to say that
it is the best experience on my touch device : the app is beatiful in
fullscreen and switching between playing and browse is easy thanks to
big touch buttons. (I know that it's not the desired behavior because we
can't exit fullscreen without esc key from keyboard.. but please don't
kill it :D)
- These 2 first remarks make me think that we should found an
alternative to exit fullscreen (something else than the button "now
playing" button) :

- You can't oveeride an exit fullscreen button in Material skin ?
- You can't catch a double tap touch at the middle top of the windows
  ?
- Or we exit fullscreen when we click on "... -> settings" ?

Now I'm also going to ask you for the next step for an autonomous touch
player ;) : Do you think possible to add an options to start
Squeezelite-X in fullscreen by default :o ?

Thank you.

I have -started- work on this. Very early stage, but if you are
interested you need to use the '5-smart-mixes' branch from your git
checkout of lms-musicsimilarity. (Not sure about the name 'Smart Mix'
will probably change). No way to create, edit, or delete these at the
moment. But the plugin will list all ".attrmix" (e.g. "Sad
songs.attrmix") files in LMS's playlists folder. You can then click on a
"smart mix" and the new API is called - creating a mix of tracks. The
file format is a key=value", with the keys detailed in
https://github.com/CDrummond/music-similarity/blob/master/docs/API.md
e.g.

Code:

  minbpm=30
  maxbpm=100
  danceable=52
  count=20
  genre=Pop;Dance

Note, 'Smart Mix' entry is shown under 'My Music' in Material but does
not work with Default skin. Also, LMS will query music-similarity at
start-up to see if Essentia is enabled - so its proably best if
music-similarity is running before LMS. The plugin does check every 15
seconds for up to 5 minutes to obtain the Essentia level - so should not
be required to already be started, but might help.

My preference is :

Keep the OS on a small capacity card; 16gb is more than enough, expand
the files system to 2gb at the max

Use a usb stick (I currently have a system with a 128gb stick) with the
music files on, plugged into the rpi.

Alternately a 2.5 inch usb hd drive (not a SSD)

KISS

Format the stick / drive to suit the computer OS which stores a back up
of the music files.

Back up the OS on the SD card (this will preserve cache, preferences and
pathways)

Spread the risk :)

Yes. The problem I had would happen with the CORE32 based LMS (i.e. NXP
i.MX6 ARM processor, 512Mb memory, custom RTOS PolyCORE) but not an
Ubuntu LMS (i.e. iCore7 processor, 16Gb RAM). So I think memory
allocated to network buffering is part of my issue.

You will certainly get some knowledgeable opinions. Mine, however, is
more opinion than knowledge. I prefer to have the music on a usb flash
drive and the operating system on the SD card. I think (but could easily
be wrong) that in that case the usb drive is SLIGHTLY less likely to
corrupted than the SD card in the event of a power interruption. Both
need to be backed up, though.

I haven't. I don't see what advantage it would offer over Spicefly
Sugarcube that I've been using for years, given that it would pull from
the same MusicIP database but has fewer options than Sugarcube,
especially TrackStat-related. I could see it potentially being
interesting for anyone who doesn't have or doesn't want to purchase a

It's not fair to Essentia/Similarity for me to say my confidence is low.
That was perhaps awkwardly written. What I meant was that my sample size
(i.e., the number of mixes I have created) is not large enough for me to
be confident in my confidence of Similarity/Essentia, if that makes
sense. And since I don't have a musical ear, I couldn't tell you whether
a song was written in B# or E nor do I know exactly why sections
of each song Essentia analyzed to create its own values so I could
listen to that same section and score it myself (a task I, frankly, am
not interested in completing). Currently, I have no reason to doubt the
quality of the data in my database. I just don't have enough experience
with it; ergo, my low confidence. I expect my confidence will rise with
more experience, which will inform what values I choose to create mixes
that I consider interesting. I consider this normal, since I am a new
user and as a new user I just don't know how the system works or reacts
when I pull various levers. It's not a critique of the system or the
data; it's of me. When I run "Similar tracks" or "Create similarity mix"
and then compare any individual result with the seed track by looking in
the database, the high-level attributes are indeed similar, explaining
to me why the song was selected. And in some ways that's exactly -why- I
use Sugarcube or SmartMix and now Similarity. I want to hear songs near
each other that I wouldn't otherwise have thought of.

You can't tell if Musly is OK by looking at the DB, its only after
creating the jukebox. But seeing as you are not using Musly, its a mute
point.
With regards to your DB, without the music I'd have no idea what to

Actually, I have been using the Similarity weight at 100, just to focus
on the high-level attributes. I haven't played much with the Musly side
of things. Still on my To Do list. I don't feel I have enough experience
to write with any confidence about my experience, even the Heart example
could have been circumstantial. In Essentia scoring, I would put my
confidence around 0.08425123, give or take. (Aside for any
German-speaking readers, has anyone else noticed the loose connection
between Musly and Müsli, the breakfast cereal made of oats, grains,
fruits, and nuts? I couldn't find any link from the Musly creator, D.
Schnitzer, describing such a connection, but it does seem inevitable, or
a happy coincidence at the very least.)

Yeah, I agree the randomness of selected tracks could do with improving
- especially if there is only one seed track. I must admit I tend to
have DSTM kick in after playing an album.

Odd, I have Heart songs - but when I choose 'Can I Play With Madness', I
don't see Heart being selected. However, different library, etc. Have
you tested your analysis results, as stated on the music-similarity
github homepage? Musly does have a known issue where it assigns the same
similarity to all songs. If everything is OK with that, perhaps set all
the filters to 0, so that just Musly is used.

Seeing as you have analysed your tracks with Essentia high-level, you
could try setting 'Similarity weighting' to 100. This will cause only
Essentia to be used. The similarity score is the calculated on how close
each track is to the seed track's Essentia high-level attributes. Would
be interesting to see if you see an improvement there. Or even try at
50, so that both are used, etc?

It's a button rather than a stick so would sit close up to the case of

It's not straightforward though.

You would need to create an image of the present SD card, and burn that
to your new bigger SD card.

You then have 2 options, resize partition 2 to fill the Whole card, or
create a 3rd partition for your music. This apparently isn't
recommended.

Whichever option you choose, I'm not sure how you would create a usable
backup strategy.

Thanks Rob.

I remembered I had a spare Scandisk Extra 64GB that was in my wife's
phone - but she has a new phone. My brain finally got into gear and I
remembered I stuffed it into my 7" Samsung Tablet for safekeeping; and
remembered I have my FLAC collection on it. When I transferred it to my
Chromebook I noted the 64GB was only half full, and there are three
24/96 albums in the FLAC folder. For some reason the folder has three
copies of the same Gimell (Hyperion) download - two in FLAC and and one
in ALAC. Why I have it three times I cannot say, but gobbles space.

Listening to it now - I had forgotten how clear it was!

I'm tempted to try that 64GB card as a training exercise, but a bigger
one wouldn't break the bank!

The amount of space required to store a CD with flac compression will
vary, depending on the complexity of the waveform (full orchestra will
probably need more space than a recording of solo flute) and the length
of the recording (a reissue of a 40-minute LP with no added material
will need less space than a full CD with 70+ minutes of the same
material). Around 300 Megabytes per CD seems to be a good approximation.
In a quick check just now, I saw some CDs that were under 250 MB, and a
few that were over 400 MB. Chances are good that you'll get everything
to fit on a 128 GB SD card; if not, 256 GB cards are available. And, as
suggested, be sure you back up that card!

I did play with them initially, then think I put them back to the
defaults... I have:

Code:

Don't repeat artist for x tracks: 15
  Don't repeat album for x tracks: 25
  Don't repeat track for x tracks: 100
  Min/Max Duration: 0
  Number of mixer tracks: 5
  Restrict Genres: No

I've never used ratings on tracks - although I can see why many do, and
it's something I've often considered.

I'm probably using it differently though, as I tend to think of a seed
track, see where that takes me... then often listen to an album I've not
heard recently that comes up... then seed from there etc. I do get what
you're saying about frequently re-occuring items though. For me it seems
to be Sting (I have one compilation, that's all), but I'm often seeing
that appear in the playlist.

However, when I compare the mixes to LastMix, where whatever I'd started
with, that always seemed to tend towards a ninties-indie mix (not least
because I have a reasonable number of such albums in my collection)...
With Music Similarlty, the mixes tend to head off in different
directions which I'm far more appreciative of.

I only have the one Stevie Wonder album (and no -Superstition-), and not
a single Heart track... so I can't test to see if there's any in-built
bias at play! ;)

Out of curiosity, what are values for your settings?

- - - -

While it's perhaps to be expected, I've found that using the same seed
song over and over plays the same group of songs (albeit in different
orders), including songs I have rated low and would prefer not to hear
too often, than occurs with Spicefly Sugarcube/MusicIP. This is true
even though the playlist runs for hours. Sugarcube has a setting to
exclude tracks below a certain rating, which "protects" me from hearing
these lowly-rated tracks. My experience with Sugarcube using the same
seed song repeatedly is different, in that it produces a wider range of
playlists. I'm still playing with Similarity's settings, which is the
genesis of my question.

Curiously, Heart thus far seems to be the (Six Degrees of) Kevin Bacon
in my collection. I used Stevie Wonder's -Superstition- as a seed track
and soon enough got to Heart. Used Iron Maiden's -Can I Play with
Madness?- and shortly thereafter heard Heart. And I played some other
seed song from the 2000s and landed on Heart within a dozen tracks. This
is anecdotally interesting because I don't have that many Heart songs in
my collection.

I'm pretty sure it NOT hearing the same symptoms. The symptoms I heard

1. Somewhere mid track (usually after 5 mins) - player will skip to
next track.
2. Skip a chunk in the middle of a track but not replaced by silence -
as if a chunk of music was lost.
3. At end of track usually between last 45-15 secs - silence but time
clock counts down at x secs to go, then at zero resets back to x secs to
go and counts down again & again. With this issues, occasionally player
may eventually progress to next track.

It pays to carefully set up dbPoweramp to rip your CD's in something
like the following format - 1-01 - trackname.flac, where 1 = Disc no,
01 = track number - this avoids the occasional situation where a multi
disk CD has identically named tracks on more than 1 Cd which happen to
be in the same place track number wise. I have seen it.
It's also the time to consider whether you want to add replay gain tags
which can easily be configured in dbPoweramp - perhaps not so much an
issue with Classical music but definitely worth it in pop/rock
collections.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I am on Hifi "Plus" Trial.

I'll try this track later this morning. I am wondering if we are hearing
the same thing. I can't recall exact tracks, but I have heard stutter on
shorter tracks (say under 5min). What I have heard can start immediately
in the beginning of a song.

Having said all that, running persistent for about 3 hours yesterday -
no problem. Since if was a Tidal assembled "playlist" it was all
different media.

No. 2nd item in playlist "Classical at the movies" under
Genres/Classical. Also on Hifi Trial so no access to MQA.

36968

I think the main issue is the duration - it is 17 mins long. "Persistent
Mode" solves similar problems for users with podcast (i.e. long
continuous track).
A secondary issue is probably encoding - which also affects the memory
required for buffering (these are TCP/network buffers). I had problem
often shortly after 5mins - perhaps with m4a track it might happen at
10-15mins. If that is the case probably a track longer than 25 mins
would be needed.

The best ripper for Windows is probably dbPoweramp but to get the most
from it you need the paid for Reference version - gives you 4 online tag
sources and better cover art. https://www.dbpoweramp.com/

was this the track you had problems with?

If so, I try later this morning, both normal and persistent (receiver
and touch on pcP). To be clear, I am on a "HiFi" trial in case that's
relevant.

I wondered if this was related to tracks that are "Masters" (MQA - up to
24/96) but I believe I have played quite of few of these selections with
no problems

I selected one of my playlists (but didn't start it) then scrolled down
to 'reccomended songs' selected one. After this song other songs of the
'recommended'-list are started automatically.

It's still not clear to me what you're doing. I assume you're using the
Spotify app?

What I don't understand is that you're talking about adding/playing
tracks. In Connect mode Spotty would only be dealing with tracks. It
doesn't know what playlist you're playing, nor what album. It only asks
Spotify to tell it what track to play next.

But the call causing errors is Spotty trying to get tracks for the
playlist "0hqXvXIavFHIjGqiZyOAKa:recommended" - which IMHO is an invalid
playlist ID. That's why I'm wondering where that playlist ID came from,
what Spotty is trying to do there, and why. Can you share step by step
instructions how to reproduce this error?

see that error in your log file. Feel free to provide a screencast :-)

LMS Essentia analysis/upload should run on any Linux system, so
Ubuntu-on-Windows should work (using the "Gaia/SVM" variant as described
on the homepage)
Re-using the existing high-level Essentia JSONs should be possible,
with one provision: LMS Essentia adds the file's path (as used by LMS)
to the JSON (as metadata.tags.file_path), so the existing JSONs would
have to be modified before uploading them to LMS Essentia's database.

Thanks. I now have an images folder on my attached USB drive and I see
the .gz file in it.

Must now backup the FLAC folder to various locations to protect the
tidying up work I did yesterday.

Quite a project, but interesting and the results are worth the work.

Ripping the rest of my CDs will be quite a job! I think I only have
about a third in the FLAC folder!

Now EAC or Foobar on my old PC? I have used EAC a very long time ago,
but Foobar is installed and ready.

But you don't need to know any Linux (I don't, I don't even know how to
pronounce the word), it's just clicking a few buttons in a web browser
on a platform you are familiar with.

You will get all the help you need from a wider and knowledgeable
audience if you you post pCP problems on a thread such as this one.

Good morning. It's a beautiful sunny morning here in Southampton but a
bitterly cold -3.4C.

Thanks for the pointer. I will look. I must sort a backup.

In the longer term I have a number of options. I currently have a 1TB
USB hard drive hanging off the rPi and that drive used to hang off the
telly for recording and time slipping. I could leave it on the rPi or
put it back on the TV and find other storage for the FLAC library. It
depends how big it is when I rip more CDs. I could get a 256GB SD card
and neatly keep all inside the tiny rPi case; or, when I de-commission
the old PC, there is a relatively new 256GB SSD card to be recovered
-but a USB housing for it may cost as much as a 256GB SD card!

Lots to think about. My eyes glaze, however, when I see lines that start
/mnt and end .gz

Windows I have used for years and grumbled about the whole time,
ChromeOS I use all the time, but Linux is a new world.

Time for some sunshine . . .

If your LMS cache folder is now on the SD card, you can create an exact
image of your partitions and file systems, so you would only need to
burn this image to a fresh SD card and you're back up and running, no
LMS/pCP configuration needed.

You should get a choice), mine below.

On pCP main page, under "Additional functions" click the "Create SD card
image".

Regarding the playlist-error message - as far as I can see all the
messages contain the text 'recommended' - maybe this problem only occurs
for songs from the list that is presented at the bottom of an active
playlist 'recommended songs' based on the current playlist.

Of course. That is on the to-do list. But first I have to work out how
to do it!

I suppose I Samba in and copy the files to another location.

And I need to work out how to snatch the LMS/Material config files to a
safe place so I can build an identical system elsewhere if needed.

This is for me a steep learning curve.
