It would be good to get the max2play problem fixed though. Thanks for that. From what I have read in the various BBC blogs recently the plan is that HLS and HDS will continue alongside DASH so it probably is worth continuing with further development on an HLS plugin. If other broadcasters follow the BBC's example than it will become even more essential IMO. [SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic metadata on BBC Radio 1 1Xtra but no other BBC stations
Hi all. I have noticed that on the iPlayer app playing the new HLS streams that Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra both have dynamic metadata with information about the track playing, the show, and Newsbeat headlines. None of the other stations do this. Is there any reason why these two are different, and if it works for them, could it be made to work with the other BBC nationals? It was the same situation with the old Shoutcast AAC streams. Something that I was wondering about is the talk of needing to transcode the AAC streams to make them compatible with LMS - doesn't that reduce the audio quality or will it not make any difference? I would have thought playing the stream in it's native format would be best, wouldn't it? I'm sure others will correct me if I'm mistaken! Chippy OK thanks. Even if a solution is forthcoming, I suspect it'll be clunkier than the original Triode plug-in which could be used via MSB. This whole debacle is making me wonder if it'll be easier to buy another system that is compatible with HLS/DASH streaming protocols. Right now an iPod Touch hooked up to the hi-fi via a decent DAC is looking quite attractive. At least it can handle all the HTML- and flash-based streams. Another thought occurs too - couldn't a network streamer be designed with VLC as it's core media player engine? VLC seems to be able to cope with anything that's thrown at it, and it is open-source is it not? Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)
OK. I managed to contact a guy at the BBC (Jim Simmons) in charge of audio delivery asking about the problem with several AAC streams going quiet on Triode's BBC applet. Apparently the AAC streams were delivered via the same infrastructure as the WMA ones so they are going to be discontinued also. However, there will be streams of up to 320 kb/s available in the HLS and DASH formats. These are being provided by Audio Factory, along with the new MP3 streams. Now, after tinkering about with LMS I have installed bpa's iPlayer plug-in and now have the missing AAC streams back again, the slight snag is that the SBT can only see this plugin when connected to my LAN, so I need the computer on to use it. But this has got me wondering - does bpa's plug-in access the new Audio Factory high quality streams? If so, then perhaps Triode can also do some tinkering with his BBC applet as well so that the Squeezebox platform will be compatible with the new BBC system? If it's OK I will get back to Jim and point him in the direction of this forum as it would be good to get this more integrated into the Squeezbox platform. The programme shown on the Touch is 'Sateli 3', whereas the correct programme at the moment is '180 Grados'. Oddly the correct info is shown via TuneIn on our iPad. I also notice the iPad often shows more stream choices than the Squeezebox. So is this because the Squeezebox TuneIn app is out-of-date? Any info appreciated. [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question about iPlayer plugin Flash streams
I've been wondering about this for a while: the iPlayer plugin works by extracting the audio from the Adobe Flash interface on iPlayer - is that right? If so, couldn't this plugin or a similar one extract audio from ANY Flash-based stream? It would solve the 'Sorry, this stream is not compatible with your player' errors you get if you attempt to access one at present and also make the Squeezebox platform as flexible as a computer-based set-up. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question about iPlayer plugin Flash streams
Ah OK thanks Triode. Some web browsers such as Safari can sometimes extract the url from a Flash-based player but as you say I suppose this depends on how it's set up. BTW I downloaded the update of your BBC plug-in earlier and it's better than before now as the logos are much clearer. Also, BBC Radio 1Xtra now shows the correct logo; before it showed the logo for Radio 2 for some reason. Thanks for this; it's a superb plugin! An update has been posted on the BBC page about the replacement for iPlayer: UPDATE: In response to the queries in several comments below. Existing iPlayer/BBC website features including 7 day catch up, live streaming, podcast, clips, selected archive and availability on other devices will remain and be fully integrated into the new product/player. So if availability on other devices is to remain, I take it that the BBC applet will still work on the new platform. Am I thinking correctly?
