And even though I am running LMS on a Windows machine, it works well

You could only suspend your server if you switch to
mysqueezenetwork.com, first. But if you do, the plug-in will hibernate
the server for you.

Thank you, Gordon, for your great work. This is actually the only
plug-in I am using, and you even custom-tailored it to my needs more
than once. It makes using my SqueezeboxServer a smooth and carefree
experience (and has always been friendly to this user), and I don't
want to miss it. I completely understand your reasons for discontinuing
support, and I hope the server code will stay stable enough for as long
as possible, so compatibility issues won't arise for yet a long time.

2011-03-23 Thread mvordeme

Thanks a lot. It just went from nothing works at all to perfect. What
about the srvrpowerctrl setwakealarm CLI command? Is that what sets the
wake timer in case there is an alarm? Could it be that a wake timer is
also set if there aren't any alarms, or is that the spurious bug you
fixed?

Those SCPowerTool.exe instances seem to interfere with smooth
operations. I upgraded my SBS to 7.5.4 (because it kept up- and
downgrading my SBR software) and witnessed how the SBS service kept
crashing until I stopped all SCPowerTool processes.

No. Round-trip is 14 ms. But my problem is with powering them down on
the local server, not on mysqueezebox.

The current version doesn't do anything, not even push the players. I
had some trouble getting everything to work again after the update. I
rebooted the server and all boxes before they were able to connect.
Could my settings be broken?

The code, as it currently stands performs two iterations. 1st, it

Immediately after making the 'connect' request, the code then sets a
timer for 15 + n seconds in the future. When the timer fires, the code
sends a JSON request to the alt server requesting a [ $client_id,
['power', '0'] ]. As the code iterates through the player list, n is
increased by 4 seconds for each player. In this case, it simply doesn't seem
to work for the Boom. I'll unsync
and test it again.

gharris999;619552 Wrote:
If you have the 'Alternate server delay time' in the SrvrPowerCtrl

by my power manager 20 minutes after no network load can be detected,
which is 5 minutes after SPC has pushed my players to mysqueezebox.

originally sync'ed, which is not always what I want to do. This was
different not too long ago.

gharris999;619552 Wrote:

you to custom-build a solution for me. It
wouldn't quite work that way because I don't fetch the players back
when the server wakes. The server does more than just to play music,
and fetching the players back for example when the backups start could
be annoying. Unsyncing first would do the trick for me, though.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2011-03-20 Thread mvordeme

It doesn't work for me. My Boom is never powered off. Either the code
doesn't work for Booms (unlikely) or synchronizing boxes gets in the
way of your code. How do you do it? If you iterate through the attached
boxes and power each one off before you push it to mysqueezebox, I could
imagine that as soon as you push the first box, the other one is dragged
along, and when you try to power it down it is no longer available. This
could be fixed by iterating the boxes twice, powering them all down on
the first pass, and only then pushing them to mysqueezebox.

gharris999;618984 Wrote:

Does changing that to -Disabled- and then specifically un-syncing the
players on mysqueezebox.com change the behavior? No. I have already switched
it off. Every time a synchronized player is
pushed back to mysqueezebox, the synchronization settings are carried
over. After that has happened, it is difficult to get rid of the
synchronization again, and yes, it includes unsynchronizing them
locally and on mysqueezebox, but in my experience, you need to pick the
same box you initiated the synchronization from. It is all rather messy.

Let me test it for a few days. Last night it didn't work as desired, and
I have no idea why not. I fetched one box back from mysqueezebox, and
when I started the music, the other box played it as well. Maybe I
messed up the configuration.

The main problem is with mysqueezebox and not with your software. I
want those two boxes synchronized on my SqueezeboxServer, but I don't
want them synchronized on mysqueezebox. So far, I haven't found a way
of preventing the synchronization from being propagated to
mysqueezebox.

As it now stands with SrvrPowerCtrl, a player gets (optionally) turned
off twice per action: once locally so that IRBlaster/PowerCenter
actions can propagate, and then a 2nd time at the remote server. This is also
great for another reason. When two players are
synchronized, they are as well fetched back from mysqueezebox.com
simultaneously (which I actually don't like). I have two players in
adjoining rooms which I only want to synchronize in case I switch them
both on. Since the SqueezeboxController and ServerPowerControl both can
push a box to or fetch it from mysqueezebox.com regardless of power
state, it sometimes happens that the box in the next room suddenly
comes to life just because I fetched the other box back from
mysqueezebox.com. If everything is always powered down properly,
surprises like that should be prevented.

Thanks a lot for your continuing work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2010-04-22 Thread mvordeme

Currently there is no interaction at all between SPC and LightsOut.
Apart from the things LightsOut is monitoring anyway like daily backups
and hard disk activity, I have set it to monitor network activity of
more than 8 KB/s. I have configured a timeout value of 20 minutes, so
20 minutes after I stop streaming any music, the server will hibernate.
To make sure there is network load at all when I play music, I have
switched all players to proxied streaming mode.

Since I never suspend the server, I removed the suspend command from
the SPC settings. Selecting suspend to mysqueezebox.com now only
pushes all players to mysqueezebox.com. I have set up idle player
monitoring with a timeout of 15 minutes and no not-idle command, so
before the server hibernates, the players are pushed to
mysqueezenetwork.com. Additionally I have configured an end-of-day
action that pushes all players to mysqueezenetwork.com before my
wireless network shuts itself down.

So far it is working really well. Alternatively, I could create and
remove a lock file with SPC and have LightsOut monitor that, but
because SPC starts the grace period again immediately after it expires,
I was concerned that LightsOut would not find the time to shut down the
server. And I like the idea of keeping the server awake while data is
being transferred, anyway. This way, I don't have to keep the server
awake just because the odd notebook is powered up. It will simply not
hibernate as long as data is being transferred.

The only downside is that network monitoring (and file monitoring) are
features of the licensed version, so I will have to pay 15 bucks when
the trial period is over, but I was planning to donate, anyway.

I am now using ServerPowerControl solely for switching the players over

set the threshold to 8 KB/s (= 64 KBit/s) and set all my players to
proxied streaming, so SPC does not need to issue any not-idle commands
at all. It works like a charm with the added benefit of other network
operations being monitored as well.

If you run your SqueezeboxServer from a WHS which you are using for
other purposes as well, I recommend having a look at LightsOut.

configure the plug-in such that it prevents Windows from hibernating
the server as long as SBS is playing any music and to set all necessary

and SPC wasn't executing any of the configured commands.

I first had to fix the service, and then I reset the SPC configuration.
After that, SCPowerTool would work again, and finally, I was able to
convince the server to execute my LightsOut integration script.

I'll keep an eye on it, and if it looks like it is working
satisfactorily, I will write a short manual and upload the script. I am
going to modify the logging so the log output can be redirected as you
did with SCPowerTool.

I use SrvrPowerCtrl to keep the Server awake as long as I play music and

a day, and I am back on 7.4. Now I am tempted to try the downgrade

By the way: Is the busy command supposed to work with 7.4.1 or is that
something that is still broken?

Yes it is. I always make sure by browsing my favourites (which for some
unknown reason are not synchronized). I remember that in the beginning,
it did not work. The first time I made it work I tried a few things, but
I don't remember exactly what and in which order. I believe I tried to
select the menu entry a second time and maybe I pressed the play button.
From then on, it has been working. I will have to check the firmware
version when I am back at home, but it should be the official one that
comes with 7.4.1.

I have a different problem with my SBC, though. If I leave it connected
to itself (after I needed a Walkman around the house) when shutting it
down, and I try to re-boot it the next day, it gets stuck and boots over
and over again. I will then have to downgrade the firmware, after which
it upgrades itself again. So, I am not so sure about having better luck
...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-08-28 Thread mvordeme

It comes down to this:

- SquezeCenter is started with end of day and alarm actions enabled.
SPC counts down the idle time and just before it sends the server to
sleep it schedules a wake-up, although I have no alarms.
- I switch off the alarm action, and no wake-up is scheduled at the
end of the count-down, but after sending the server to bed, the
watchdog starts issuing not-idle commands again. This is not such a
big issue because LightsOut hibernates the server quickly enough after
the idle action. The watchdog remains in this state even if I
  re-enable the alarm action.
- I switch off the end of day action as well. This time, the watchdog
goes to sleep after sending the server to bed. Unfortunately, it does
not wake up again. Not when I resume playing music, not after the
server wakes up from hibernation and not even if I re-enable the end
  of day command.
I shall restart SqueezeCenter with the alarm action disabled and see
whether it will continue working, but right now I am not feeling too
well, so I call it a day.

Cheers

Our discussion is too long ago ...

It started with this posting of mine and went on
for quite some time. I will need to go back and have a look at how I can
make it work consistently. I did already attach a log file, though.

I am the guy who is using LightsOut, so the server does not hibernate
at all as long as my notebook is powered up. WOL is working fine. It is
only the watchdog that either keeps waking up again all the time or goes
to sleep and never comes alive again. I was able to make it sort of work
with a defined sequence of configuration changes, but I have forgotten.

I will have a look at my old postings and try recreate that situation,
so I can give you another log file.

Cheers,

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-08-25 Thread mvordeme

Is there any chance you will be able to sort out my problem? Have you
been able to reproduce the behaviour? Currently, SPC works very
unreliably for me.

When SqueezeCenter is started, it will always schedule an alarm for one
minute after it times out. Then I have to switch off the end of day
action or alarm interaction (or both?) to stop that, but then it will
not wake up again when I resume playing music. When I am lucky, I then
manage to get it into a state where it repeats the idle timeout period
and an idle command forever without scheduling a wake-up call by
enabling those options once more, so it will actually work, but only
until the server needs to be booted.

Let me know if you need help with this.

Thanks and regards,

I does not work. The watchdog does not wake up again.

Currently, everything is broken. WOL had disappeared from the SBC,
Windows is running SqueezeCenter under a temporary user account so SC
does not find my LightsOut script in the user profile directory, and the
WHS console does not display the current value of the LightsOut action
for some unknown reason. Microsoft sucks. My wife is complaining that
the server is running all the time and my daughter wants me to play with

up to now, the watchdog would indeed go to sleep after the configured

now has returned to the behaviour shown before. It goes to sleep and
then wakes up only one minute later.

I must admit that I changed one thing in the configuration. I suspect
that trying to restart SqueezeCenter from the SBC butchered the Windows

You may believe it or not. As soon as I add the restart option to the
menu, the watchdogs goes to sleep after the timeout and does not wake up
again - not even when I hibernate the server and start it up again.

Here is my log file. Maybe you have an idea.

The old version of SPC without the not idle action would have been
completely sufficient if not for one situation: I stop the playback
while my PC is still running. SPC tells LO to hibernate, but LO waits
for me to shut down the PC, first. After some time while the PC is still
running, I decide to listen to some more music, but then I shut down my
PC. LO will wait for the configured timeout and then hibernate the
server while my SB is still playing music. This is what the not idle
action fixes. It will tell LO not to hibernate the server once playback
has resumed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-23 Thread mvordeme

Okay. I think I know what happened. Since the firmware update (which was
supposed to fix the connectivity issues of the SBC), my SBC suddenly has
problems connecting. Sometimes it fails to connect to the SqueezeBox,
sometimes to SqueezeNetwork and sometimes to the SqueezeCenter. It
appears that when it is connected to SN and fails to connect to SC, it
connects back to SN, and if you don't happen to watch the display when
it gives up, you don't notice the failure. But this is a problem for
another thread.

It appears that last Sunday when I thought the SBR was connected to SC,
it was actually connected to SN. The same thing happened again, today.
So while I was listening to the SBR, SC was running the idle countdown.
But because I was writing a reply in this thread at the time, the server
did not hibernate when it was told to. So far so good.

Now comes the unexpected bit. With the old version of SPC that I had
modified, SPC would then repeat the hibernate command every idle timeout
+ 1 minutes as can be seen in the log: 7647

The current version of SPC starts to submit the not idle command
again, immediately after the hibernate action: 7648

This is probably due to the fact that now, the not idle action is
also being performed during the idle countdown. The question is whether
this is desirable. The server only shuts down because LightsOut reacts
quickly enough, and it only gets the chance to do so every idle timeout
+ 1 minutes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-23 Thread mvordeme

Does the dog bark as well when I start playing music again before the
server hibernates? This was the reason why the not idle command was
needed in the first place. I actually liked the idea that the hibernate
action was repeated occasionally, just in case someone else had been
playing with the LightsOut configuration in the mean time.

At the moment, I am not sure what I would expect from a generic
watchdog, whether it should submit busy actions during the idle
countdown and whether it should repeat the hibernate action or not. In
the context of LightsOut, though, it would be nice if no busy actions
were submitted during countdown and if the hibernate would occasionally
be repeated. Maybe we should discuss this with the other potential
beneficiaries of the new SPC features.

gharris999;434782 Wrote:
The idle-watchdog would only get disabled at the expiration of the
idle-timeout. Anytime between the last not-idle and idle-expire, if you
start playing music, the idle-watchdog catches it. If there is
significant lag time between sending the suspend/hibernation command and
LightsOut actually putting the system to sleep...the idle-watchdog would
be disabled and wouldn't hear any music playing and thus wouldn't catch
it.That is bad. The only reason why I need the not idle action is that I
may resume playing music before the server hibernates. Otherwise it
would have been enough to issue the not idle action at wake-up and the
hibernate action after the idle timeout.

gharris999;434782 Wrote:
Tell me more about how LightsOut works. What's the function of the
not-idle message you're writing to the registry? How quickly does
LightsOut react to the time to sleep message in the registry?LightsOut is
an energy manager for WHS. I find it quite embarrassing
that something like LightsOut is not included in the first place.
LightsOut has a calendar where you can schedule up and down times, it
will automatically wake the server during the configured backup window,
but most importantly, it will keep the server running while any WHS
clients are connected, and hibernate the system when after an idle
timeout no clients are connected, no up time is scheduled and no backup
is currently running.

The only problem with LightsOut is that it does not recognize
SqueezeCenter clients, so if all your PCs are shut down, it will
hibernate the server even if you are currently playing music.

The ideal way for SPC to interface with LightsOut would be to register
as another client, so LO would not hibernate the server as long as SPC
signals an active client. Unfortunately, there is no interface that
allows registration of additional clients.

The current workaround is to change the timeout action setting for
LightsOut. In the LightsOut configuration, you can choose what to do
when the server is no longer needed. You can do nothing, suspend,
hibernate or shut down. This choice is stored in the registry and
constantly monitored by LightsOut. The VB script I wrote changes this
value, so when LightsOut wants to send the system to bed while there is
still music being played, the configured action will be do nothing. As
soon as SPC's idle timeout has been exceeded, the value will be changed
to hibernate (or whatever else you choose to configure), and LightsOut
appears to pick up the change pretty much instantly and send the server
sleeping if there are no other known activities.

gharris999;434782 Wrote:
If LightsOut's reaction to the time to sleep message is configurable,
then why not configure it to react as quickly as possible? Let the
count-down delay happen in SrvrPowerCtrl. That appears to be the case, anyway,

gharris999;434782 Wrote:
Or, if it makes more sense to have the delay-before-sleep countdown
happening in LightsOut, then set SrvrPowerCtrl's idle-countdown to 0.
(This will require a code change to allow values lower than 5, I
believe). That was my first thought before I saw the tools at work, but the
timeout value configure in LightsOut only refers to active clients and
not to modifications of the timeout action setting. A change of the
timeout setting will take effect, immediately.

gharris999;434782 Wrote:

 needs the IsIdleWaiting_cmd.

gharris999;434782 Wrote:

it so that the idle-watchdog is automatically re-enabled after a
suitable time out...e.g. 10 minutes? Can't you arrange for the watchdog to
wake up when a player starts
streaming music? Or as an alternative, you could make the disabling of
the watchdog after the idle timeout optional.

I had been playing music continuously, so there should not have been any
hibernation at all. There were connection problems with Last.fm at some
point in time, but unfortunately, they don't appear in the log, so I
cannot say whether they had anything to do with it. But even if the
connection problems have triggered the hibernation, it was 13 minutes

performed only 2 minutes after the last not idle action.

I will step up the log level and listen to some more music.

I think both are valid alternatives. If you just want to prevent
LightsOut from hibernating the server while you are listening, the small
plug-in will do perfectly. If you need a solution that provides more
options like switching players to SN, it would be better to have the SPC
integration. What does the author think? Any chance of officially
including a busy command option in SPC?

Last but not least I have been thinking about a new feature that could
possibly be built onto your plug-in. Is there a way to know when the

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-05 Thread mvordeme

Architecture decisions ...

Since we don't get rid of SCPowerTool, we might as well move the
registry action there. That would keep the Perl code system independent.
You could for example introduce another flag ---lightsout-, so I would
just have to change -scpowertool.exe --hibernate --log- to
-scpowertool.exe --hibernate --lightsout --log- in order to use
LightsOut for controlling the server.

In the watchdog script, I would introduce a new -szBusy_cmd- which
would be something like -scpowertool.exe --busy --lightsout --log- and
be executed somewhere in this -if- Block:
Code:

#$g{log}-debug(Checking to see if scanner is running if players are
idle..);
  if ( Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Block::IsBlocked() ||
Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Util::AnyPlayersPlaying() ||
Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Util::AnyPlayersUpdating() ||
Slim::Music::Import-stillScanning() ) {
$g{log}-debug(Not idle condition..);
#Not idle...reset the timer to check again..
$nIdlePlayersTimeCount = 0;
return 0;
  }

This is approximately what Alex did with the system-specific code
externalized.

I am not sure whether you would also want to make the rate at which the
-szBusy_cmd- is performed configurable, too, but apart from that I
believe that you can feed almost any watchdog after the command has been
introduced.

gharris999;429267 Wrote:
If we were to go with just the is idle message via the registry, that
should avoid the sort of system deadlock as you describe. Presumably,
LightsOut has the responsibility of clearing the is idle flag. This has
somehow slipped under my attention radar. I don't think that
LightsOut changes the flag at all, save when the configuration is
modified by the user. I will test the assumption as soon as I have it
installed.

The current logic unfortunately requires both an idle and a not idle
signal to be written to the registry, but it probably would not hurt to
renew the not idle signal now and then if that is easier to implement.
The good thing about the registry solution is that you can choose for
the server to standby, hibernate or shut down, so apart from the timer
features, it can replace SCPowerTool completely.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-01 Thread mvordeme

What is this? Yesterday, I set the library rescan time to 0:30 and
switched the rescan on. After that, I have not been able to hibernate
the server any more. SPC would not hibernate the server at all, and when
I used the windows controls, the server would wake up again as soon as
it was hibernated.

I now switched the rescan off again, and it seems that I can now
hibernate the server again, but selecting Hibernate to SqueezeNetwork on
the Controller does not work (and may have not worked at all before). In
the log files, I keep seeing the following lines although the alarm
should no longer be there:
Code:

[09-06-01 13:24:45.0011]
Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Alarms::ExecRTCWakeForAlarmCmd (341) Now trying to
execute command: c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C start /B scpowertool.exe
--wakeup=1243895280 --quiet --log
  [09-06-01 13:25:45.0005] Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Util::__ANON__ (353) Now
trying to execute c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C start /B scpowertool.exe
--hibernate --log

The timestamp should be -Mon, 01 Jun 2009 22:28:00 GMT- which is two
minutes before -Tue, 02 Jun 2009 00:30:00 CET DST- and thus consistent
with my earlier rescan settings.

I will now wake the server up again and see whether it will at least go
to sleep if I let it alone ...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-01 Thread mvordeme

I am sorry if I get a few things mixed up. The SqueezeCenter
configuration confuses me mindless - and I don't think that I am easily
confused by technology. I did not even know that the rescan was done by
a plugin. Fact is that the server could be hibernated again after I
disabled the rescan, so the plugin might do some scheduling itself. But
how am I to know? It comes pre-installed, so I did not read the
documentation - not to mention that I cannot find any.

I actually configured an end of day action for 0:30 (I am on CET DST
which is GMT+2), so that is the alarm that keeps popping up in the logs.
The only thing the EOD action does is to shorten the timeout, but I may
have a look at the CLI and follow your proposal.

Meanwhile, I have found out a bit more about the remaining hibernation
problem. It may have to do with the fact that I do not run SqueezeCenter
under an administrative account. When I issue the command
-scpowertool.exe --hibernate --log- as an administrator, the server
hibernates immediately. When SPC runs the command (I see it in the log),
nothing happens. It will make the server hibernate eventually if I
configure a timeout in the server's energy options (wasn't that against
your recommendation?), but although it sometimes hibernates the server
directly after the command from SPC, it sometimes appears to wait for
the configured timeout before hibernating. I have searched the internet
for information on how to authorize a user to hibernate the server but
had no success.

Missing access permissions could as well be the reason for the rescan
problem. In order for SCPowerTool to write a log file, I first had to
give permission to the SqueezeCenter user. If the rescan plugin should
try to write a file with the last successful scan timestamp, it would
most probably fail. That could be the reason why it does not let the
server go to sleep.

Is this making any sense at all?

It is Windows Home Server, and I think technically there should be no
problem with running SqueezeCenter under an administrative account. It
just makes my old Unix admin instincts scream in panic.

The only way of granting permissions to a user account I can find is to
add it to groups, and that does not appear to work as expected. I tried
to authorize a user for remote desktop access by adding the account to
the remote desktop users group, and it did not work. But even if it did,
I have no idea how to authorize an account for hibernation of the

handles client connections as well as backup scheduling. I think
LightsOut should be in charge and SPC could connect in as an extra
client. If I had to design an interface, I would come up with three
methods:
- registerClient (inhibit hibernation)
- deregisterClient (allow hibernation)
- hibernate (request hibernation skipping any timeouts if possible)If a CLI was

that it is not. I promise I will register in the home server forum,

Is there a way of keeping the server entry in the Controller's music
sources list after it has been hibernated by SPC? If the server
disappears from that list, there is no way I can easily wake it again
using the Controller.

Do you think SPC could somehow be wired up with 'Lights Out'
so the server stays active as long as it is still in use by either
Windows clients or Squeezeboxes?

2009-05-30 Thread mvordeme

Thanks for your answers. I read the ten (actually twenty) posts above
but could not find what I am looking for. Having thought about it some
more I have come to the conclusion that it would be best if there was a
command line interface for Lights Out where you could register and
de-register a client. This would be very easy to configure in SPC. I
will have a talk with the developer ...

After some hassle I was able to install the WOL applet. 'Here is the
link' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_Applets). For
some reason it cannot be installed using the applet installer, so it had
to be done manually.

I think I have discovered a minor problem with the -Hibernate to
SqueezeNetwork- feature, although I am not sure whether it ought to be
fixed at all. If you let SPC switch all players to SqueezeNetwork, it
switches the Controller, too. Since the Controller cannot (yet) be
connected to SqueezeNetwork, it disappears to nowhere and can no longer
be selected. I had to switch the audio playback feature off and back on
again to regain control. I have now worked around it by manually listing
the MAC addresses of the other players. Hopefully, SqueezeNetwork will
support the Controller soon, so this will become a non-issue.
