Cool - there is also a thread on the Netgear NAS forum about AAC
enabling which looks as if it SHOULD be possible. It's here:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=26302
to summarise - this is today a mess on the NAS (more so on the DUO than
the PRO and absolutely nothing to do with the SC people) and I for one
don't want to start hacking my NAS at this point, I'll use 0.9a instead,
follow the thread and wait until a proven solution emerges for AAC
support. I'd like the chance to see if the quality improvement is great.

But other Netgear NAS users may want to lead the way - if so please do
post either here or on that thread.

Version 0.9a is now available which contains two minor changes:
1) It detects if your server supports aac and if not falls back to
wma/mp3
2) It provides better support for presets on 7.4

As per discussion above. If you want to override 1) and always use the
non aac streams, then disable aac decoding on the server files types
menu.

Thanks Triode - this sounds just the job, and I agree it would be
better not to have a settings page.

Any idea when this will be available? (now ain't that just like a user

Thanks. Having been a very happy user of 7.3.3 since I upgraded to Snow
Leopard yesterday, I'm clearly ignorant of a lot of the new features in
both iPlayer and 7.4!

Having read the other thread, you've clearly put in a lot of work to
get AAC working - please ignore my laggard comments about WMA. I'll be
staying on 7.3.4/0.7 for the time being, but when 7.4 gets a little more
stable for (my) general consumption I'm sure the experience of 0.9 (or
whatever it is by then) will be just a good.

Thanks again for a great plugin - and keep up the good work!

It doesn't this has changed in 7.4 to allow differnt presets per
player.

If you are using the latest 7.4, then to set the presets go the the
relavent menu on the player where you would have pressed play to play
the stream and press and hold the preset until it says the preset is
set. This is now entirely separate from the web interface.

I'm using a Mac. I guess anything's going to be slower than the almost
"instant on" that I'm used to. Although to be fair, the "favourites"
issue may have clouded my judgement on this one - I didn't do much
testing after I hit that issue and quickly reverted back to 0.7.

And last night's 7.4 didn't even let me assign preset numbers to
favourites!

The start up time for trascoding is slower on a windows server than a
linux one - so suspect you are using windows?

If you want to use wma streams for live streaming, then you could also
use the BBC streams which are part of the Other radio streams menus
which are the wma streams. I will make it so that wma/mp3 is used when
aac is not available, if you disable the aac file type this will allow
it to fall back to wma, but I was trying to avoid having a settings page
for this plugin.

Understood - thanks.

I would personally prefer if we had the option to choose streams in
future versions - since I generally listen to "talk" stations (Five Live

than slightly better audio quality. Of course, those that listen to BBC
music radio may have a different opinion.

0.7 uses WMA for the live streams, 0.9 uses FlashAAC which are
potentially better quality but may take longer to start up due to
additional transcoding.

Favorite issues for 0.9 should be fixed with 7.4 when it is released.

I will look at falling back to wma if aac can't be played for live
streams.

0.7 works great for me. I take back what I said about radio startup
taking less than 2 seconds - it's less than 1! :)

Using 0.9 had caused me problems with favourites, but also took much
longer to start playing the radio stream, and occasionally failed when
trying. Forgive my ignorance - I don't know if this is transcode
related or not. I just know that 0.7 gives a great user experience.

Yet it was the very "low-powered" feature that attracted me to the NAS -
I want something that runs quietly in the background, uses little
resources (environmental and system),but yet is fully featured.

Low power ain't always a bad thing - it may even be the future.

Couldn't there be an option switch in the iPlayer plugin so that the
user could choose between AAC and MP3?
Or maybe the plugin could choose automatically (if AAC fails then
default to MP3)
Or is that a lot of work?

I'm a big fan of this plugin and it does seem a shame to have to go
backwards.

I'm guessing it's pointless talking to the Netgear people if the raw
horsepower isn't there...

Transcoding should work fine on leopard / snow leopard. Its only low
powered nas's which don't have the cpu power to transcode. Can you try
the aac stream Bryan posted above to prove whether that plays when you

I have the same issue - having just upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, I
thought the problem was related to that. I must have updated from an
older version of iPlayer to 0.9 without realising.

The ability to use favourites is a killer feature on the Boom. It means
I can go from 'standby' to listening to Radio 5 Live in about 2 seconds
- including all buffering. It's pretty amazing when compared to other
"internet radios". (Yes, I'm looking at you Pure Evoke Flow...)

Thanks for posting the 0.7 link. I'll give it a shot...

I agree with that - but I was also able to use the Listen Again feature
of iPlayer before, which is the main feature I am interested in.

So - can I get back to 0.4?

Check WebUI Settings/FileTypes/ AAC - if they are all greyed out then
there is no support.

Since then I get "failed to parse" on all the LISTEN LIVE stations on

When I check the version of iPlayer on the Boom it shows 0.4 though,
although this may be a poissant rouge (i.e. maybe the version number
just didn't get changed?). When I check the version number in SC

I've also upgraded the radio station timeout parameter to 40 secs, this
has made no difference, applied, restarted.

Any clues?

Running on a NAS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer 0.9 and favorites

2009-08-29 Thread Triode

You may find this works with 7.4 and not 7.3 servers. Though I would be
interesed in feedback from people on how well this works. The issue is
that iplayer uses dynamic urls so we can't just store the url in
favorites. 7.4 has the added complexity that favorites and preset
buttons are now different and I am not sure all cases are covered at
present.

For alarms it might be better to use the WMA stream URL.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer 0.9 and favorites

2009-08-29 Thread knigma

Hi,

If I add a favorite for the Live Radio 4 stream from the Internet Radio
menu the favorite works for a while but some later fails until I create
a new favorite. Means I cannot use it for the alarm clock. Does anyone
else see this?
