Have you got a path to the music folder or a playlist folder in SS
server settings? If you are using MM to organise the music, these
settings should be left empty.

I'll try delete the cache files (the whole Cache directory??) and see if
 it helps.

Yes, on a Windows system delete the whole Cache folder at

C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Cache

Is there a way to add files without using the MM client? I'd prefer just
to dump the new files into my music directory and let a background job
 process them.

You can just put music into the folder where you keep your music on
your hard drive, and tell MM to 'Watch' that folder (last item in MM
Options). MM will then scan and analyse any changes to that folder in
the backgrounds. And after the MusicMagic Reload interval you've set
in SS, SS will rescan and pick up the information from MM.

But make sure the interval is big enough so that both programs aren't
accessing the files at the same time - 600sec is OK for small changes,
retagging etc; but if you're adding three or four new CDs, MM needs
time to analyse the music. So I'd suggest you turn off the automatic
scan by SS, by making the MM Reload Interval = 0. Then you can wait
till MM has finished analysing, and do a manual rescan (I find 'Clear
and Rescan' best to be sure of getting the two caches aligned
properly)

Remember, if you are using MM, then you are letting that software
manage your music files and keep the data about you music in its own
library. SS then bases its own data about your music on what it gets
from the MM cache (which is why you should not give SS a music folder
setting of its own - if you do, it will start trying to set up a rival
library on its own account, and you'll get conflicts).

I think this may be the cause of a lot of the difficulty. I found MM
had real trouble when my music files were on a NAS. It's much happier
if the files are on the same drive as the program, inside the box.
I've no idea why this is so, but it did make all the difference; and
it is mentioned on the MusicIP forum.

Deleting the Cache folder rebuilt the library but didn't rebuild the
 Cache folder and contents.

I don't understand that. Perhaps another Linux user can confirm what
should happen. But FileCache is normally a folder within Cache, along
with others called Artwork, MySQL, and templates.

I'm been experiencing the duplicate entry problem that others have
described here when using the MusicIP in headless mode on Linux. I'm
currently trying to solve the problem by deleting the cache files
manually. As tech support recommended, I deleted everything inside of
the /usr/local/Slimserver/Cache folder. When I restart the slimserver
service and access the Web interface, there is no evidence of the cache
rebuilding itself. The cache folder is empty. Is there another method of
getting the cache to rebuild in Linux?

You might try deleting the entire Cache folder from the Slimserver
folder - this is what I've routinely done on my WinXP system. (Make
sure there are no settings in SS for a music folder path or a playlists
path before you exit SS and delete the Cache.)

On restart, SS detects that there's no cache folder and rebuilds it (I
think mysqld may actually be doing this); then the scanner starts and
does a complete rescan to rebuild the library. Can't think why that
process would be any different on a Linux system.

Well that was going to be my plan too (setting reload to 0 while

during the night, with absolutely no validation running.
(and yesterday evening, everything was fine).

May be if I've 15min to waste today I'll check both artists lists to

In the meantime, back to music !

I think I might have find out what's gonig on.

It seems to be due to the trackstat plugin, which in its settings has
minimum numbers of tracks for -an artist -an album to be shown in
stats, and a minimum duration for a track to be shown.

I've set everything to 1 and wait to see if the stats change.
If not, I'll rescan and check if they decrease again.

I was thinking something similar, so I'll give that a go. Another
alternative, if you use extended access control lists, would be to make

Hi Diana,

I've seen it happen and it works fine for me ! The only issue I have
sometimes had is if I import something into the MM database, but
Slimserver realises the database has changed and starts rescanning
before the MM validation process has finished.

If that happens, I get the new music, but not with the little MM next
to it (for the tracks that haven't finished validating).

For that reason, I increased the MM reload interval to about 10 minutes
which is plenty of time for MM to finish doing its thing.

A full clear and rescan sorts any mismatch issues out as well.

I don't even have the command line parameter set up any more.

I recently set MIP up as a headless service (you may need to have a
premium key from MIP to do this) and then set Slimsever to start up
automatically as well. There's not been a single problem about the
order of starting these two up since I did it this way (even though
I've uninstalled and reinstalled both several times).

I've never set anything up as a service before, and was quite hesitant,
but the instructions here worked first time for me.

http://www.musicip.com/mixer/server.jsp

You can still start up and use the MIP application if you want to but I
prefer having it running away in the background.

You probably don't want to start messing around with your install now
you have it working properly, but if you ever decide to reinstall
Slimserver for any reason - you might want to consider this set up.

(And, BTW, is it possible to (a) delete an ordinary playlist with the

I have that problem if the paths don't match exactly.

On my system (running Linux), I have my library at something like
/music/mp3 (yeah, even flacs go there, the mp3 is a carryover) but I
also have a symlink (shortcut in windows sense) that goes from
/home/bem/mp3 to the music library.

If I tell MusicIP to use /home/bem/mp3, and Slimserver to use
/music/mp3, even though they are technically the same place, Slimserver
can't tell and duplicates everything. If they both use /music/mp3, then
it works fine, though a full scan is slow since it reads tags twice.
(Though I have yet to get anyone to agree with me on that.)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: MusicIP and adding new music

2007-01-04 Thread Diana

Snarlydwarf I've been experimenting with this, and you're right on
several counts.

If I set SS to use MusicMagic and also set a music folder, the scan
takes 40 minutes; if I don't have a music folder set in SS, it takes
17 minutes.

If I set only 'use MM', the song count is 3364. If I also set a music
folder, the song count is twice that.

But I have always used an UNC path to the networked music drive in SS
(\\drive-alias\public\musicfolder); whereas MIP only lets you select
an assigned drive name (Y:\musicfolder). When I use the same assigned
drive name format in SS as in MIP, the song count matches: 3363.

And one final idiosyncrasy I've discovered (probably everyone else knew
this already!): when I've got SS and MIP agreeing about the number of
songs (as per my last paragraph) MIP reports 752 Artists; but the SS
library stats on the home page report only 444. (SS agrees with MIP on
number of albums and of songs). However, when I browse in SS through,
say, All Artists to All Albums to All Songs, SS displays the number of
artists on that page as 752.

What I think is happening here is that whenever SS is looking at All
Songs, it counts how many artist names there are, including all
multiple instances (i.e. individual tokens); but whenever it is
summarising a higher level (albums; artists) it counts only how many
*different* artists there are (i.e. types rather than tokens). MIP
only reports tokens.

This may be boringly obvious to most people; but it comes as a great
relief to my orderly mind to understand the discrepancies between what
I had assumed would be counts of the same things. To see the
unaccountable discrepancies was an irritating puzzle!

Best wishes

Siduhe I have now! You just press 'SEND TO' in the MIP GUI. Doh!

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: MusicIP and adding new music

2007-01-04 Thread smc2911

For what it's worth, I set both the music folder and use MIP because I
have found that MIP will not pick up filenames with accented
characters, but SS will. I believe that this issue has been fixed with
the windows version of MIP, but I am using the linux version.

I've also noticed that strange things can happen if I update tags (and
I had to clear all ID3v2 or below tags that were lingering on a few
mp3s, although I mostly have a flac collection). Generally if I get MIP
to do a refresh as well as doing a rescan things are sorted, but at the
moment I'm stumped by one album. The album is by Psychic TV and
originally the mp3s were tagged as Psychic T.V.. I changed this for
consistency with other albums but no matter what I do, I'm getting two
artists in SS for every track on the album: so it displays, for
example, Botanica by Psychic TV and Psychic T.V. from Dreams Less
Sweet. Examining the tags closely with mp3tag, I'm convinced that
there are no tags with Psychic T.V., but a search on MIP always comes
up with Psychic T.V.. I've tried moving the album off the server,
refreshing MIP and then putting it back and adding new music, but no
joy. The only thing I haven't tried is deleting the whole cache and
re-validating (reluctant to do so with 10,000 tracks as it'll be very
slow!).

Anyway, sorry for getting a bit side-tracked there!
