Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer Plugins - an alternative quick fix guide
Following a reinstall of LMS on my Synology NAS I have "re-plugged in" Triode's BBC iPlayer and now I am not getting any graphics or "now playing" information on BBC radio (3 as it happens). One thing that might be relevant is that following a google search I followed instructions from Systemline, which suggested that as Triode was no longer online I should unplug the Triode plug-in, add their repository and following updates, their own version of iPlayer would appear. Anyway I added the respository and unplugged Triode, and no other option appeared. So re-plugged in Triode and its working fine but no graphics. All that might be completely irrelevant but thought I would add it. Any thoughts about how to get the graphics back. Not a major issue but nice to have. Reluctant to take out the respository unless the view is that either it is completely unnecessary or perhaps even causing the problem. There may be a switch or simple procedure that I am missing. Quite likely. crrc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=66599 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103435 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

That's good to know. For the benefit of other readers. The HLS streams have a MIME type and the PlayHLS plugin associated that MIME type with a transcoder using ffmepg/avconv to play the stream. Some users have reported less "rebuffering" when using ffmpeg/avconv to play live BBC streams. Using PlayHLS with ffmpeg/avconv requires more CPU & memory than the BBCiPlayer 1.4.9 and also requires the end user to find a compatible version of avconv /ffmpeg that works on their system. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103435 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

If you select BBC Radio 2 from the 'Tunein Radio' app in My Apps the stream will be a 128 mp3. I've always thought of there being a factor of 2 between AAC and MP3, so 96kbps AAC would be equivalent to 192kbps MP3. Factors such as HE-AAC, AAC LC, and Joint Stereo or not for MP3 complicate matters. Hi I've followed the instructions on the first post (as of today 16 July 2016). The following works for me: - Listen Again (e.g. Radio 3) - Listen Live (e.g. Radio 4) - Show synopsis and images from the feeds (i.e. cover art) However, Listen Again Radio 4 doesn't work for me at all. I'm on Windows, I've copied the patched faad.exe, and also followed other instructions for Windows. In Settings > Advanced > File Types, the MP3 option is disabled for each entry. But what's the point? The last Triode iPlayer plugin does not work at all unless some of the files in it are manually patched using these various fix guides. I am running LMS on a MacBook. I am using the BBC DASH plugin. I get a loud high pitched whistle/data noise when I have my Pink Triangle Ordinal DAC plugged into my SBT (coax link) and select BBC. Tidal however is fine as well as anything I receive from an internet radio station on the SBT itself. If I select the BBC the noise starts and continues until I select another source like Tidal. I would prefer to use my Ordinal DAC as SQ is better. The problem occurs running LMS on my Windows laptop too and with other BBC plugins. Recently I finally got around to putting my Odroid U3 properly into service to replace my v1 Pi-based server. This is using Max2Play. I followed the quick fix guide in the current thread to get the BBC plugins up and running and they are working great apart from one thing. When I play a live stream, there is no logo showing - just a blank screen. I get this on the Touch, Radio and in Orange Squeeze on my phone. It's not a major problem but I wondered if I'd missed something in the set up or whether this is something that just isn't working at the moment. Last time I asked for advice on the BBC plugins on this forum, it was on the main BBCiPlayer thread and I ended up following this present set of instructions. Looking back at my post there and the replies, there was some mention of a menu.opml file and I wonder if this had something to do with this problem but I'm not able to figure out from what was written there exactly what I had to do (in particular, where to get it from). I'm dubious anyway with it not being mentioned in the instructions in the first post of this thread, which seems to have been actively kept up to date. Either way both plugins will be disabled at the same time so a common solution is needed. Unfortunately finding a host which can give trouble free http download to a repository URL is not easy. Some comments regarding uninstall and then install. 1. If all BBCiPlayer and BBCiPlayerExtra plugins are disabled - they will not be uninstalled until after a restart so any associated repository URLS must be deleted at the same time and then LMS restarted for plugins to be removed. Whenever a plugin is disabled or a repository URL change LMS must be restarted. 2. After each restart of LMS when adding respositories and enabling/disabling plugins - the Settings/Plugin tab must be reloaded - if user keeps Plugin tab open between LMS restarts, changes to Plugin tab will not be shown and if apply clicked - strange results may happen. 3. With no repositories are defined - Logitech have repositories for old versions of the BBCiPlayer (1.2.14) and BBCiPlayer Extra (v1.07) show up in the plugin list. Michael needs to be told to remove these as they are useless and confusing. 4. The googlecode Repository URLs for Triode's BBCiPlayer 1.3.1alpha3 and BBCiPlayerExtra 1.8 are still valid - it seems Google have reversed some of their googlecode changes made in mid Jan. However when googlecode is shutdown BOTH urls will die. 5. Once the BBCXML.pm file of BBCiPlayer is replaced - I found no problem with BBCiPlayer 1.3.1alpha3 and it worked OK with BBCiPlayerExtra 1.8. 6. The instructions should tell users to halt LMS before replacing BBCXML.pm file. 7. The BBCiPlayerExtra V1.8 may die shortly when BBC removes the FlashAAC (aka RTMP) support. 8. Is the Windows faad.zip update not part of LMS 7.9 or has Michael not been told about this faad problem ? 9. The "Show Live Text" should be disabled as RadioVis has been stopped and when enabled seems to prevent some LIve (non-uk) streams from playing with a coding error logged. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103435 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer Plugins - an alternative quick fix guide
We're on a thread in a forum about a very few alternative solutions to playing radio stations, and we collectively still manage to generate some confusion and (minor) disagreements even though we all want pretty much the same thing and are generally positive towards one another. Now imagine you are in Geneva trying to get people to even talk to each other so as to stop a war, or (for UK readers) trying to get a contract settlement for Junior Doctors. Impossible! So on balance we're doing OK :) However, I still need help to decide what to do with the 1st post for newcomers. It needs to be as complete and accurate as possible for the solution after the playHLS version, prior to the test DASH version. As far as I know the only thing wrong with it as of today (11th Feb) is that the specified iPlayerExtra repo doesn't exist any more. Guidance please! Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer Plugins - an alternative quick fix guide
Right oh. I might as well give my side. *bpa* is correct in that apparently *formbypc* posted on the wrong thread ( a simple mistake). What happened, is that some one posted on pfm asking for help on installing DASH. I replied with a simple guide, which he followed and completed successfully. At the same time, another forum member posted on pfm about the HLS version and it is from this, that the confusion arose (I think). When I saw the post by *formbypc* here I replied on pfm and advised him (on this thread) that I had done so (I assumed he wanted DASH). I also posted on pfm that if he followed my guide he should succeed with installing the DASH version. However, he seems to have missed that and yesterday evening I sent him a PM on pfm explaining some of the confusion and that he should ignore any posting by me, unless he wanted the DASH version. It's just a bit of confusion really (and I had also forgotten about the sad demise of "The Memory Man" what a back-handed compliment that turned out to be!) Sorry about that:o Ronnie. It is one of the areas I have been playing around. The LMS AsyncHTTP routine used to "get" an URL has two parameters - expires and timeout. Timeout is the timeout for a HTTP get - I'm not too sure of expoires but I think it is the life of a DNS entry. If not set then defaults are used. Changing the timelimits per HTTP GET is quite easy and is done in the HLS.pm file. The following are the two routines I have changed. Note they have added instrumentation to monitor fetch times - you only need to add the cache, timeout and expires to your HLS.pm to play around. The fetching of the "pls" which tell LMS which 6 secs segments to fetch Code: sub _fetchPL { my $self = shift; my $url = shift; my $start= shift || 0; $log->debug("fetch playlist: $url start: $start"); ${*$self}{'_pl_refetch'} = undef; Slim::Networking::SimpleAsyncHTTP->new( \&_parsePL, sub { my $http = shift; my $fetchtime = int((Time::HiRes::time() - $http->params('fetchtime'))*1000); $log->warn("Error: fetch time $fetchtime fetching $url"); $self->close; }, { obj => $self, url => $url, start => $start, cache => 0, expires =>HLS_TTL_EXPIRES, timeout=>HLS_PLS_TIMEOUT , fetchtime => Time::HiRes::time() } )->get($url); } Code: ub _fetchChunk { my $self = shift; my $chunk = shift; if (my $url = $chunk->{'url'}) { $log->debug("fetching [$chunk->{chunknum}]: $url"); $chunk->{'fetching'} = 1; $chunk->{'requesttime'} = Time::HiRes::time(); Slim::Networking::SimpleAsyncHTTP->new( sub { $log->is_debug && $log->debug("got [$chunk->{chunknum}] size " . length($_[0]->content)); my $fetchtime = int((Time::HiRes::time() - $chunk->{'requesttime'}) *1000); $log->error("HLS chunk fetch time $fetchtime ms") if ($fetchtime > 300) ; delete $chunk->{'fetching'}; delete $chunk->{'requesttime'}; $chunk->{'chunkref'} = $_[0]->contentRef; }, sub { my $fetchtime = int((Time::HiRes::time() - $chunk->{'requesttime'}) *1000); $log->warn("error fetching [$chunk->{chunknum}] fetch time $fetchtime $url"); delete $chunk->{'fetching'}; delete $chunk->{'requesttime'}; }, { cache =>1, expires =>HLS_TTL_EXPIRES, timeout=>HLS_SEGMENT_TIMEOUT } )->get($url); } } [/code[ bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103435 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Long response times by BBC servers show up as "Couldn't resolve IP address " errors - the majority of these are not DNS errors but long reponse time from the CDN servers but confusingly reported by LMS as a "couldn't resolve IP" . The timeouts used by the HLS code is the default value set by LMS Setting "Radio Station Timeout." I'm on linux (xubuntu) and have a local DNS cache set up with dnsmasq. I use Google DNS at 8.8.8.8. My ISP is TalkTalk, getting around 30Mbps. I haven't had issues with drop outs on HLS or DASH for quite a while now. Maybe I'm just lucky. So, try a few DNS servers and see if anything changes. If it does, then investigate ways to improve DNS response times, using different servers or even a local cache of some form. I'm afraid I'm very much an amateur meddler in such matters. Are you using HLS (as per this thread's instructions) or the newer DASH version? If changing DNS doesn't help, something else must be causing problems. Are you sure your local network is good? Is it wired or wireless? What platform are you on? There should be logs available that you could turn on and post on the iPlayer thread - hopefully someone there will be able to see more about what's going on. Only advice I can offer is what is already in this thread. Check network connectivity and if you can test with ethernet rather than wireless or EoP adaptors and see if any improvement. Remove network as a possible cause. As you've already identified, google dns helped in my situation. I can't offer any more but perhaps others can I'm new to these issues and the fixes in these forums. The current issues why the test version is still considered test and not production. 1. The BBC DASH streams are still beta and so underlying tech could still be tweaked. 2. Live DASH streams can stop as often as once / hr. This is due to long response time from BBC (http get reponse can take up to 3 mins). This could be a BBC implementation issue as DASH stream are still beta. I am also testing changes to plugin to minimise this effect. 3. There is an issue which stops live DASH streams playing - I can't reproduce. It seems to affect Windows based systems possibly most likely with "high end" servers (i.e. CPU with lots of cores i7). 4. There is a possible similar issue to 2 with Castbridge but with "ordinary" servers. Not sure if 2 & 3 are related. 5. Occasional playback issues with "Listen Again" is playback is started very near end of program. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103435 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
