Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AAC+ streams and time delay

2009-06-30 Thread whitman

Oh well, it took me a while, but I am now a happy 7.3.3 user.

All fine - but although the delay from track change to readout change
is slightly better on AAC+ streams, it's still nowhere near the
almost-instant change on an MP3 stream.

Is there anything more to be done?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] softsqueeze won't run

2009-07-26 Thread whitman

I don't think I've tried to run Softsqueeze since I upped to SC 7.3.3.
Anyway, I just tried clicking on the 'click to install and run
softsqueeze' link at the SSQ page in the SC web interface, and I get a
file deposited on my desktop called softsqueeze.jnlp, which opens with a
load of (to me) impenetrable text. I'm running SC on a Mac, OSX 10.5.7.
Anyone know how I can get SSQ to run?

Thanks bpa. I wasn't getting options, as you describe, but that set me
thinking. After some digging around online, I found I had to execute a
file called lsregister, in a very deeply buried folder. Now Softsqueeze
does run for me (hooray!). I presume the change came after an OS update,
so it may be that other Mac users will stumble on the problem when they
come to try Softsqueeze. If they want to execute lsregister, this is the
command to put into Terminal...

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/Current/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Morning GoCubs.

Thanks for all the joy that your SDT plugin has brought me and my
household.

I wonder if you could let me and some others on this forum know if
you're likely to fix the broken version of SDT 5.8.7, the latest (I

Quite a few of us do not want to upgrade to 7.4.x because of its
instability etc.

It would be so useful to have one of our fave plugins working again!
Please help.

not has anyone tried copy/pasting the 7.4 gotWeather Perl sub from
plugin.pm to 5.8.7? That should work.
I'm sorry to say, but supporting an additional build is not appealing.
I am not a software company with unlimited time and resources. To have
a full fledged build I'd also have to go backport all of the other fixes
that have occurred past 5.8.7 or I'm certain there'd be emails and forum
 posts to that regard.
I do not have a 7.3 installation to test things with, if someone is
willing to test a build out for me we can try that route. Basically
I'll do the copy/pasting suggested above and you'll need to manually
install the copy and let me know how it goes. If it looks good I can
 package it up.-Greg

Greg, thanks for replying. As far as 7.4 goes, it's more of an
ain't-broke-don't-fix-it thing on my part, sticking to 7.3.3 mainly
because I've seen lots of people moaning after they moved.

I'm not technical at all, but I'd be happy to test a build if you'd be
kind enough to make one.

I really appreciate your efforts on this.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Audio On Demand part of Triode's JazzFM plugin not working

JazzFM has changed its website and the Audio On Demand part of Triode's

It returns There was an error loading the remote feed for : (404 Not

The website now requires a login for that part of the listening service.
The JazzFM Live listening service works fine via the plugin, as that
does not require a login.

I wondered if this can be fixed? I enjoy listening to JazzFM's Dinner
Jazz show and never have a chance to get to it live.

Anyway, it doesn't actually feature a Triode post, only someone saying

That would be the end of Jazzfm on my Squeezeboxes for me, which would

but one last thing I'm wondering about before I do - what will it look
like on my SB3? I mean, how do you browse and generally use Spotify
from the plugin? There's no Info link on the Plugins page, so I'm not
sure where else to find out about this. Maybe someone even has some
snaps of their SB3 in action?

Thanks Triode. I certainly do intend to install and look. I'm used to
using online Spotify (as a lucky early free user) and was just curious
how closely the plugin shadows that: Radio? Library?, previous
searches? etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Spotify Premium Plugin (Beta)

2011-01-27 Thread whitman

I've had Spotify up and running for about a week now using this great
plugin.

My question is about the quality of the Spotify streams.

I realise this thread is about the plugin, but I wasn't sure where else
to post. I realise, too, that this forum is for the Squeezebox, and not
Spotify itself, but I know that many Squeezebox users enjoy good
quality as well as good music. I felt sure there will be others here
with views on this.

So: I must say I find the quality of the Spotify stream disappointing.
I have the plugin settings on high quality, which seems to be 320k of
something called Ogg Vorbis. But I find the quality of the streams
rather boxy, flat, and uninspiring. They do not compare well to, say,
the streams I listen to on the great BBC iPlayer plugin for my
Squeezebox, or the AAC+ streams of one of my favourite net radio
stations, Radio Paradise, which I also listen to regularly via the
Squeezebox. Even some MP3s sound better to me than the Spotify
streams.

I'm not sure I'll want to continue the premium Spotify sub if this is
really the kind of quality they want me to pay for.

Log on with the Spotify client and check the settings there so you

Thanks for that: I hadn't realised there were settings at the Spotify
app/client as well. But it doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm
assuming therefore, Triode, that the setting at Stream Quality in your
plugin's prefs determines the quality that gets to the Squeezebox,
irrespective of whether Sound/Enable High Bit Rate is checked or not in
the prefs at the Spotify app/client?

I'm saying I don't like them. What do you mean by source? Obviously a
poor original will never be improved by Spotify. I'm saying the overall
quality is poor. And to be clear, Triode, are you saying the settings in
Spotify's own app/client do not affect those in your plugin?

JackOfAll;606394 Wrote:
It's the replay gain process they apply that kills the quality. Well,
that's my opinion anyway, having converted lossless to 320k VBR Ogg and

Triode, is there any way of turning off the replay gain via the API so
the track streams aren't normalized, just delivered at the original
 levels.

When I started this little sub-thread in post 1,936, I was simply
moaning about the overall quality of Spotify's supposedly 'high
quality' 320k stream. It does seem to vary - which I imagine must be
something to do with how Spotify has changed its conversion and/or
storage habits over time - but in general I'm disappointed to have to
pay for something that isn't consistently top-notch.

JackOfAll, that's an interesting thought. Is this the same thing as
Enable Volume Normalization in the Spotify's own app/client prefs? If
yes, see my question above about interaction between Spotify's
app/client and Triode's plugin.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Alien/iPlayer 6.5.x version terminally broken?

2008-11-28 Thread whitman

The sub-menus on my 6.5.1 version of AlienBBC, with the recent-ish
iPlayer patch, seem to have just gone kaput. Radio 4 can just about be
made to respond, but Radio 2 not, and that's the one I use most. I
suppose the Beeb have changed things again. I presume that bpa's
comments a while back that the 6.5.x version would not be updated any
more still stands? If so, this really does sound like the trigger for
me to finally make that jump to 7.x.x and investigate the iPlayer
plugin.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] aac streams on SC 7.2: where does mplayer go on a mac?

2008-12-06 Thread whitman

Just updated Slimserver 6.5.1 to Squeezecenter 7.2 on my Mac. I want to
play AAC streams, so will still need mplayer. It used to live in
[home]/Library/Application Support/SlimDevices/bin. Can I just copy
that old bin folder, which I put aside during my clean installation of
7.2, to the new installation? If so, where does it go? If not, where do
I get mplayer from?

Thanks bpa.

My hard drive's top level does indeed lead to /usr/local/bin with an
mplayer file inside. But that might be a remnant from the old setup.

How do I check convert.conf settings? This is sounding familiar - I
think I had to do something to these for my previous 6.5.1 setup to get
AAC Plus running. But I can't remember. Could you remind me what to do?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] aac streams on SC 7.2: where does mplayer go on a mac?

2008-12-08 Thread whitman

Ownership seems OK. Very odd behaviour. If I make a duplicate
('aacpmplayer.sh copy') it says it's a Unix executable file. If I
delete the 'copy' bit, it's back to a plain text file. If I leave a
space after sh, it stays executable. But I'm not convinced it is.

Perhaps I should take a step or two back and give a quick bit of
background. I just upgraded from SS 6.5.1 to SC 7.2.1. I am not running
Alien BBC as I'm using the BBC iPlayer plugin instead. That seems fine.
Some radio stations - from my point of view particularly Paradise and
JazzFM - have AACplus streams available, which I think are higher
quality than the top MP3 streams. In order to run AACplus streams on my
SB3, I've presumed I just need mplayer and this aacpm 'plugin'. But now
these probs. Maybe I should be content with MP3.

I'd be grateful for some help.

I've been using my SB3 with the shiny new AACplus streams for a few days
now, and I notice that when a station (such as Paradise) has the
facility to provide a readout on the SB of what's playing (after you
press Now Playing), it takes quite a while for the Now Playing readout
to change to match the actual playing track. In other words, there's a
delay between the song changing and the readout changing. Is there
anything I can do at my end to fix the delay? It wasn't like this when
I was using 6.5.x - in fact it was a more or less instant change.

I see.

It sounds like SC is trying to get to where it really needs to be: a
place where users can install things easily without pulling out too
much hair in the process. Assuming one has any hair left in the first

Seriously: this sounds like a good development.

I'm still enmeshed in the pain of very recent upgrading to 7.2.x from

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Why is BBC iPlayer plugin not on Squeezebox Plugins page?

2009-01-25 Thread whitman

I've been enjoying using Triode's excellent BBC iPlayer plugin for some
time now, and, like Alien BBC before it, it has become for me one of
the key reasons for owning a Squeezebox.

So I wanted to find a link to direct an SB-owning friend to its
usefulness. But I found to my surprise that it is not listed in the
Audio section of the Squeezebox Plugins page at

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/PluginsAudio

The only place to 'find' it, it seems, is the post on this forum, at

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53229

To me this seems like selling this wonderfully useful plugin short.

I just had a look at editing the wiki. Blimey. Very complicated. Doesn't
exactly invite you in, does it?

Anyway, according to the editing FAQ, a page is editable if it has an
edit tab at the top. Can't see such a thing on the Plugins/Audio page.

And there was I simply trying to do a good deed. Shall I give up?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Spotify on Mac with SB3?

Can I use my SB3 to listen to Spotify via my iMac? I looked at this

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AAC+ and file types

2009-02-18 Thread whitman

I was looking at another thread here...

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36034

and noticed one of bpa's checklist items was to ensure that AAC+
decoded stream is sent to SB3 as Flac or WAV.

I took a look at Settings/Advanced/File Types in my SC 7.2.1. It's not
clear to me how these settings work. Against AACplus, for example, I
have:

FLAC 'aacpmplayer.sh/flac'
MP3 'aacmplayer.sh/lame'
WAV 'aacpmplayer.sh'

What does that mean? What am I sending to what?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AAC+ and file types

2009-02-19 Thread whitman

Sorry bpa; yes, that was more thinking out loud than a question.

When I looked at my settings in File Types out of curiosity, it
occurred to me that I don't understand how these settings work. I've
just glanced at them before and presumed they're OK as they are.

So, to be more precise, my question is: do I need to leave them all
'on' as is? With the AAC+ settings, for example, do I need to disable
the ones I don't need? And if that's so, how do I work out what I
need?

As usual, there's nothing there in SC itself to help a non-tech person
like me to understand what's going on.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AAC+ and file types

2009-02-20 Thread whitman

Very useful, thanks, bpa.

You say SC decides what to apply depending on what rules are enabled.
Enabled where?

The three main types of stream coming into my SB3 are: Apple Lossless,
from my iTunes music; MP3, from various radio stations; and AAC+, also
from radio streams. As I understand it, MP3 is the only one that goes
'straight through' as a native format. Obviously I'd like to be hearing
the other two at best possible quality. Is there a way of ensuring that?
Or do I just trust SC to have my best interests at heart?

Oh, and while we're on the subject of AAC+, this blog...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/02/better_audio_for_bbc_radio_onl.html

...says that BBC radio iPlayer is now using AACfamily streams for the
listen-again service as of Feb 11th. Is that really true?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AAC+ streams and time delay

2009-05-16 Thread whitman

Back at the end of last year I asked bpa this question ...

I've been using my SB3 (SC 7.2.1) with the shiny new AACplus streams
for a few days now, and I notice that when a station (such as Paradise)
has the facility to provide a readout on the SB of what's playing (after
you press Now Playing), it takes quite a while for the Now Playing
readout to change to match the actual playing track. In other words,
there's a delay between the song changing and the readout changing. Is
there anything I can do at my end to fix the delay? It wasn't like this
when I was using 6.5.x - in fact it was a more or less instant
change.

Bpa replied as follows...

It's a known problem due to fact that SC doesn't know SB is playing a
Flac stream - SC thinks it is a slow AACplus (e.g. 128 or 48k bit)
streams as guesses the amount of music time in the SB buffer wheras SB
has a 1500kbps Flac stream and has about 10 or 20 times less music
time buffered. Problem is much worse with slow streams.
AACplus hooks into SC in an unapproved way to enable the radio text
to be displayed - if I used the Normal transcodiong like Alien - there
would be no text at all. The method also meant a full blown Plugin did
not have to be developed. I do not want to maintain another plugin.
I might be able to do something in 7.3 as there have been changes which
look promising.

I wondered, bpa, if you've managed to make an improvement regarding
this time-lag and if it's therefore time for me to usefully upgrade from
7.2.1 to 7.3.2?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Installed AlienBBC on Mac: no sound

It installed fine, showing up on my browser and on my SB3.

everything else perfectly, by the way.)
Is there something else I should be doing?

Hello Danco.

You said...

As for tesing mplayer, I forget the exact syntax, which is in the
notes IIRC, but if mplayer is in /usr/bin, then just running terminal
and typing mplayer followed by the suggested parameters (some mplayer
parameters plus the name of some program) will test it. From bpc's
comment and my memory, try just
mplayer -playlist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/realplayer/media/fmg2.rpm

I've tried Terminal and got this message...

/usr X$ local/bin/mplayer
dyld: local/bin/mplayer can't open library:
/usr/lib/libncurses.5.4.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

Does that tell us anything?

Thanks, BPA.

The first message indicates a missing library or it could mean the
library is named the same in your version of OSX.

Is that good or bad? If bad, can I do something about it?

The second message:
Trace/BPT trap
is usually associated with a version which has been compiled for a
processor not compatible with your systems.
What processor is in your powerbook G3, G4 ?

It's a G4, Power PC (in other words not Intel), 167MHz.

Where did you get the version of mplayer you installed ?

I got the MPlayer for Mac OS X from the AlienBBC site here...
http://www.x2systems.com/AlienBBC/mplayer.html

I hope all this can tell us more.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC R2 Replay mono?

2008-02-03 Thread whitman

I was listening to Radcliffe Maconie on AlienBBC Radio 2 Replay and
noticed I had a John Lennon-less 'Benefit Of Mr Kite'. After some
fiddling around I discovered that the extreme stereo separation of this
Beatles track had highlighted that Alien BBC R2 Replay was giving me one

and Replay was in glorious stereo (with John back at the mic). Is this a
known fault on AlienBBC, or have I somehow mangled my settings?
