there mentors, or people who are willing to teach individuals for a hourly
rate? I am wondering because it seems like the community is expanding and
the world is becoming more accessible every year. I would like to refer
people or push the information on the web and make more people aware of
what is possible. I do understand that we are a minority in the sense of

Re: my post on the Avid blog

2014-05-10 Thread Byron Harden
widgets were drawn to the screen. This meant
that things would be changing anyway and we’d probably have to wait until the
transition was complete before the accessibility issues could be addressed. I
kept in touch with key members of the Pro Tools team, stopping in to visit at
various conventions and trade shows or whenever I was in San Francisco.
One day I received a call from Avid informing me that some work had been done
to make Pro Tools compatible with VoiceOver. I flew to the West Coast to get
a sneak peek and offer some feedback before the next release of Pro Tools. It
was extraordinary to suddenly have access to Pro Tools version 8 when the
previous accessible version was 5.3. I was once again back in step with my
sighted colleagues, using the latest tools of our trade. An accessible Pro
Tools empowered me to walk into any studio, fire up VoiceOver and operate Pro
Tools, all the while amazing the young studio staff who probably never knew
one could operate a DAW without looking at a computer screen.
Things were really looking up—for a while. Then came the big change from Pro
Tools 10 to 11. Accessibility didn’t entirely break but we did begin to lose
a few key features, which raised some serious concerns. I attended another
meeting in Daly City where a few ideas were tossed around. The issue was that
the initial work of making Pro Tools accessible had been approached as a
skunkworks project, using whatever extra resources were available at the
time. Since that project hadn’t been part of the normal workflow, some UI
elements in Pro Tools 11 were changed without regard for their connection to
the accessibility API (application program interface). Rich Holmes, director
of product management for Pro Tools, had a brilliant idea. He pointed out
that Avid had pushed for international language support in Pro Tools version
11 and accessing the program through VoiceOver was essentially the same as
accessing it in another language. Taking matters through official channels,
we got the OK from the top to make VoiceOver support part of the normal
process of development and quality control. Rich appointed Ed Gray, director
of Partnering Programs (who happens to be legally blind himself), to
 coordinate accessibility-related efforts at Avid.
With a user interface as feature-rich as Pro Tools, the work of making it
accessible is a long-term project. We’re continuing to address a few areas
that still need attention. One of our current challenges is to get
third-party developers to make sure their plug-in controls are labeled
properly. Some proprietary controls in many plug-ins remain invisible to
VoiceOver. Avid and Apple are prepared to offer guidance in the process, but
the first step is simply to raise awareness of the issue. At this year’s Avid
Developer Conference, part of Ed’s presentation was devoted to the issue of
plug-in accessibility. This is the kind of visibility the blind Pro Tools
user community had hoped for. Avid has led the way, making all of its new AAX
plug-ins accessible. Hopefully, others will follow Avid’s example. We still
have challenges like the inaccessible iLok License Manager. Pace Antipiracy
is aware of the situation and has indicated that they will address the
 problem in the near future.
With the release of Pro Tools 11.1, we’ve seen a huge improvement in
accessibility. Not only were things fixed that had been inadvertently broken
in the transition from version 10 to 11, but blind users can now access
 features that were previously inaccessible.
Students and other first-time Pro Tools users often approach me looking for
guidance, and they’re amazed at how accessible it is. I’m always happy to
share the good news and assure newcomers about Avid’s commitment to making
Pro Tools fully accessible. This has prompted the newest members of our
community to invest in Pro Tools systems and encouraged veteran users to
upgrade their hardware and software. Users like Rick Boggs, who blazed a
trail early on by helping make early versions of Pro Tools accessible, has
rebooted his video description work with Audio Eyes, a company that trains
and employs blind engineers using Pro Tools to produce audio-described movies
and television programs. I See Music, a company started by Byron Harden in
Chicago, is setting up students with new Pro Tools systems and offering
training as part of a state-funded rehabilitation program for aspiring blind
audio professionals. Colleges that held on to older Macs running older
systems for their blind students in audio courses have now begun to upgrade
those rigs to newer hardware and Pro Tools 11. At my own studio, we’re in the
process of migrating over to a new control surface and an HDX system.
All in all, it appears that access to Pro Tools is back on track. That track
may have resembled a roller coaster ride at times, but I have a good

so light infact, that you could not notice it when the music is playing.

i look forward to hearing where this mix will end up at, because some would
over process searching for a polished sound, but how you cut it, is how it
needs to be mixed, good luck bro. awesome job so far

seems like you could loosen up a little. I bet when your singing that same

thoughts of how to improve it, I think the vocals are sitting on top of the
music a little too much, either you could pull the vocals down a tad, or
compress or both. I myself would definatly compress the vocals more, at least
a 3 to 1 and go up from there with a fast atack on a faster paist song like
that and dig into the thresh hold.
 Take care

suggestions on how to get things more pollished. I'd be curious though not
only for you to point out the bad parts, but also to tell me the points that
you do really like, if any. I'd like to get both sides.

This was put together just this morning in ProTools. I'll admit I didn't
really spend much time on this, so I probab ly could have gotten it more
pollished, but for only 5 takes on the vocal, plus the arrangement I did
with the instrumentation, I think it actually came out quite well, all
considered. You can hear the recording by visiting:

Plwease let me know what you all think. Again, I want both the things that
really could be done to make this shine a bit more, as well as to know the
things you really did find worked really well for me.

because i wanted to cut and paste the good parts from the other 6 takes to this

i made the selections that i wanted to edit down to the open playlist, but it
would not paste it there, nore would it let me cut or copy it.

any ideas my good people?

On Jul 5, 2013, at 8:48 AM, Cara Quinn modelc...@gmail.com wrote:

 Morning All! :)

 I have good news!

I just got the M-Tron Pro to work with PT 10! I'm s psyched! :)

To be clear, I am able to access all of the sounds. I haven't yet figured out
how / if editing is possible, but I can see all of the parameters, so we'll
 see.

I found that the dialogue which comes up in PT when you access the plugin for
the first time, which asks you to register is actually completely accessible
and worked perfectly and quickly. :)

I then set the plugin on an instrument track which actually needs to be a
stereo track, and the window came up. Since I was unable to get sound with it
at first, and seemingly was not able to change / set a preset I was thinking
'oh great, this isn't accessible.' However, I tried clicking on the librarian
pop-up button by routing the mouse to the VO cursor and clicking my track pad.

 Success!!!

the menu opened and I was able to browse all the banks and set a sound!
 Woohoo! :)

Sound now came when I played the keyboard and all is now well with the world!
 lol!

-Or at least with a world which contains all manner of old, somewhat
 creepy-sounding dark progressive tape-driven instruments! ;)

Just as a couple of notes, as I mentioned above, the track you put this on
does need to be stereo as this is a multi-channel plugin. This freaked me out
at first as I couldn't find the M-Tron Pro in the plugins list. I was using a
mono track just to test though.

As far as editing patches goes, I'll obviously keep y'all posted when I
figure this one out. I'm sure all the parameters are available via automation
so this may be just another quirk like using the physical mouse to open the
 librarian. We'll see…

Hope y'all are having a lovely day and talk with you soon!

 Smiles,

 Cara :)

 Hey Cara,

No direct experience of either, but a few thoughts that might be
useful for you. PT 10 doesn't support VST as a plugin format, you'd
need RTAS distributions of those plugs. I've used a bunch of IK
Multimedia software, haven't found anything that's accessible enough
to be properly productive with in the last few years, and have always
been pretty underwhelmed by their attitude each time I contacted them.
No experience with anything from GForce, but that's probably the
option you should investigate first. PT doesn't actually give you
hands-on interraction with a plugin's GUI as a VO user. Instead, we
get a custom interface thingy that works with whatever controls a
plugin developer has exposed to automation. We also have access to
PT's preset library function. I mention those two things because you
can often get a feel for how much of a plugin is likely to be usable
by finding out what's automatable and whether presets are stored in
each DAWs library or whether they have to be accessed via a swanky
third party preset browser. There are a few exceptions to the rule as
ever, stuff that in theory should work and doesn't, but it's been a
reasonable rule of thumb in my experience.

 Hth, keep us posted

For anyone interested whom may not already know, they are two different
emulations of Mellotron and other tape-based instruments.

GForce makes M-Tron and M-tron Pro and IK Multimedia makes SampleTron.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with any of these?…

 Thanks!

Since my Axiom is in fact a second gen, it employs direct link which means
its controls are already set up. PT recognizes it pretty much automatically.

 • Go into peripherals from the Setup menu

 • Choose the Midi Controllers tab

 • Choose M-Audio Keyboard for the type of midi controller

 • Set Axiom 25 DirectLink for both the in and out midi port

 • Make sure the number of channels is set to 8

That's it! :) It just works!

We sure do love the easy button! lol! No fuss, just fun!

I'm wondering what I might do to set this up?

I believe this is the second generation of the Axiom 25 as I believe I
 purchased it in early 2012.

Sorry for such a newbie question but honestly I've been learning so much

Could a person use these control consoles to do functions with Protools that
can not be done from the mac keyboard?
One idea I would think would be to get the Protools software accessable to a
point and the controls that were not accessable from the mac keyboard could
be done from one of these control surfaces or consoles.
This whole issue has me verry concerned.
If the protools software could be made accessable 100 percent, just think
what opportunitys this could open up to young blind students who are
 intrested in multitrack recording.
This could be possible employment for some in studios making a good living at
 what they love to do.

 Hi Jon,

Tracking with compression, at least in plug-in form, would be helpful to
control dynamics. Especially when working with more than one vocalist, people
usually track each other much better when they hear a more even level of
signal. Sometimes we call that railroad, that is, when people's harmonies
lock together like railroad tracks because the blend is so solid.
Compression, in this case, is supremely helpful.

True, in plug-in form, the compression will not affect the original
recording. It is possible, however, to apply compressor to a track and route
to a bus and then another track. The second track would have the compression
recorded. Then, of course, you're looking at more latency. The analog domain
still rules for certain things, eh?

AAX plugins are not accessible yet. That's why it's important to delete the

That way you can use the latest pt update, and at the same time use the

10.01 before installing the new one. Then, I just removed the folder
Library/Application Support/Avid/Plugins that has AAX plugins.
FYI, the old plugins are located in Library/Application
Support/Digidesign/Plug-ins, and they have .dpm extension. AAX plugins are
located in Library/Application Support/Avid/Plugins, and they have .aaxplugin
 extension.

I have to go through the list to make sure I'm not missing any plugins, but
all the effects and instruments seem to work fine.
I thought some people might be interested.

couple of questions,

2013-02-27 Thread byron harden
 hello my good people,

my name is byron, i am a new pro tools user,
i am learning this daw pretty swiftly,
there are a couple of things that i can not grasp.

wondering if any one on the list knows how to rearrange the track order in the
track list.

just to give you all a little more insite,
i still use snow leopard as far as my os goes,
i also have a mac pro dual quad cor,,
and pro tools 10.3 hdx system
i as well have a c-24 control surface,

so if any one knows how to make this happen either from the keyboard, and or
the control surface that would be super awesome.

question 2

wanting to know how to copy 1 or more inserts to 1 or more tracks.
i am sorry for the beginner's questions, but i am totally dropping the ball on
these two things.

thank you

I am wondering the same on the first question as well, but on the second

click on settings at the beginning of the plug in window, to the right of the
close button and scroll down you will find a copy and paist setting, you can
copy from there and it will save that plug settings and then go to the incert
on the next track, pull up the same plug and click paist. You can also use
the command C to copy and command V to paist. HTH

Hi there folks. I've recently started college doing a music
performance/production course, among other things. They use PT as
their main program, and I only learnt of its accessibility a couple
days ago. I guess firstly, I heard there was a tutorial or two that
someone did on PT. When I searched for it I discovered the link was
broken. If anyone has those are they able to chuck me a link?
Secondly, is PT practical for us blind folk yet? I understand this is
fairly new, so I thought I'd ask before taking the dive. I would
certainly be needing access to the midi area, along with possibly
plugins and access to some of the in built softsynths it has. (Though
I know that ones a bit of a hit and miss.)
Any help on this, anything at all would be greatly appreciated.
 Cheers,
 James

So Katie, I do think I remember your introduction about a week ago. I use
Sonar the majority of the time, but I picked up a Pro Tools set up for my
recording studio because I thought I would have more pro tool spicific
clients, but it didn't turn out that way. Many just want their stuff
recorded no matter the set up as long as you know what you are doing. So
now I have both PT and Sonar. I am much quicker with Sonar and find it to
be more flexable than Pro Tools and a little easier to learn, the thing is
though, with PT on the Mac you are for the most part getting a recording
system that goes hand and glove with the Mac platform, and whether people
like it or not, Pro Tools is industry standard. With a PC you have so many
3rd party programmer variables that it can become dawnting to get a good
set up that performs well. I would say this as you get back into the music,
most people end up getting the Pro Tools bug so if your at the gate and
wondering where to start then you might be better off just jumping into Pro
Tools so your not like many who start off in Sonar always wondering if they
 should start learning pro tools.

Hi, Nate. I've used Sonar when it was Cakewalk in the past during the
early 2000's. I think I used Cakewalk version 9 up until I graduated from
Berklee in 2004. I mostly used Cakewalk for writing instrument and vocal
parts for my production projects or I used it for completing assignments
for Traditional Harmony and other classes in college. I'm not that
familiar with Sonar with recording digital audio because I only did MIDI
 recording with Cakewalk/Sonar.

Yes, PT is accessible and the person who did those lessons is Kevin
Reves, he goes back and forth from this list and the PT access group. He
also does pro tools lessons via skype or phone. His email is
 m...@kevinreeves.net
Do you know how to use voice over, the screen reader for the Mac? That is
the biggest hurdle IMO to using Pro Tools. I have a PT set up on a Mac
with a 002 mixer and I am able to use plugins, softsynths and perform
most basic edit functions. I am still learning though, it is a different
 kind of beast than Sonar.

 Subject: Beginner questions.

 Cheers,
 James

 Hi Byron,

Glad to see you finally made it onto the list. Welcome. I'll let others chime
in about surfaces other than the C24. Speaking of which, I think you might be
one of the only users on the list with a c24 specifically. Since the
Control|24 differs from the C24, it would probably be helpful if you came up
with a document that specifies the layout of the C24 for other users. I know
some schools are using them so other blind students would benefit from such
 information.

I'm attaching a few documents that outline the layout of the Control|24 as an
 example of what I mean.
