Re: can not delete audio

2014-12-10 Thread Kevin Reeves
Sometimes, when selecting tracks for editing, if it doesn’t work, toggle the
selection of the track by using control p or semi-colon.
This usually happens when a session is first opened. Tracks may be selected for
editing, but that doesn’t mean they will work
By reselecting the track, it somehow gets things working again.

Re: can not delete audio

2014-12-04 Thread Slau Halatyn
Steve,

In the Edit window, bring up the item chooser and type wave. That should
narrow your choices to the display button that should say waveform. If you
don't see this button, there are two possible explanations, actually three but
one of those would be that you have no tracks being displayed and I doubt
that's the case. The second is that your display is set to something like
volume so the word waveform would not be displayed. Bring up the item chooser
and type mute. If you can find the mute button, move focus to the next
control and it'll be something other than waveform but will surely be at least
something. Click on that button and select waveform.

The third possibility is that your track height is insufficient to display the
full names of the buttons. With the track selected, press Control-up arrow
twice then perform the steps with the item chooser. Chances are the button is
displaying something other than waveform if cutting, pasting and deleting isn't
working.

Re: can not delete audio

2014-12-04 Thread David Eagle

I've been having the same issue. When I load a new project I select my track
and then make a selection. The selection definitely has been made. But when I
try to delete the audio, nothing happens. Cut and paste are also dimmed. The
only way I've managed to get it working is to interact with the tracklist table
and just to press control semi colon. I seen to remember that this changes the
tracks selected. After this. The delete function works. I have no idea why.

Re: can not delete audio

2014-12-04 Thread Slau Halatyn
Steve,

Make sure track and edit selection is linked under the options menu.

Here's what could be happening for people seeing this behavior: If you open a
session and you don't have an insertion point within the track itself, making a
selection with only the counters or with the down and up arrows will not make a
selection within the audio itself. What you're doing is selecting a range of
time but not a range of tracks. If you have insertion following playback within
the Preferences dialog (and you certainly should have that checked), You need
to scrub at least for a moment to make sure an insertion cursor appears within
the track's timeline. Another way to accomplish this is to create another track
and use Control-semicolon. While this works, it's an extra track which is now
created for no purpose other than to create an insertion. If you already have
other tracks in the session, that's not an issue, of course, you can just use
the command to move to the lower track and move back up with control-p.

This is another reason why a control surface is indispensable for serious Pro
Tools use.

Re: can not delete audio

2014-12-04 Thread David Eagle
Thanks for that Slau, very helpful as ever.

What I liked about Sonar was that I could make a start selection, press space
bar to stop audio, then skip forward quickly into another part of the project,
then make an end selection. Pressing space bar would not get rid of my start
selection point. This was very useful, especially for the work I do which is
largely with speech. I also liked the fact that the space bar would essentially
pause the audio, whereas in PT, the space bar starts playback at the selection
point. There doesn’t seem to be a way of pausing playback and restarting from
where I stopped. The closest I can get to recreating this is to press number 2
on the numeric keypad, which stops playback and moves the project on about half
a second. The only way to be able to make a selection where I select a start
point, stop the audio and move through the file quickly and then restart
playback and make an end selection, is to unlink timeline and edit selection
and track and edit selection. But you and others seem to warn against this.

I don’t know whether there are anyways to do this. I suppose I could use
markers to get past the issue of PT unselecting my audio whenever I change
position and press the space bar.

Sorry to be contrary. I’m just trying to get used to doing quick audio editing
in PT, and it doesn’t seem practical to have to sit and wait for the part of
the project to come along when I want to make my end selection point. I know
that I want to cut the next minute of audio, so I don’t need to listen to it, I
need to get to my end point quickly.

Thanks for you patients and help.

David,

Control-n toggles the insertion following playback or not. Simple.

Further, if you have an in point, why not split the region? Command-e will
split the region where the insertion is. Then you can get to anywhere in the
timeline by pressing asterisk on the num pad, entering the value and pressing
enter. When you get to where you want to make the out point, pause the
transport, press Option-Tab while holding down the Shift key to select to the
previous region boundary (which would be the place where you split the region
and that's it. If you need to select across multiple regions, just press those
commands multiple times and you should be good.

which is largely with speech. I also liked the fact that the space bar would
essentially pause the audio, whereas in PT, the space bar starts playback at
the selection point. There doesn’t seem to be a way of pausing playback and
restarting from where I stopped. The closest I can get to recreating this is
to press number 2 on the numeric keypad, which stops playback and moves the
project on about half a second. The only way to be able to make a selection
where I select a start point, stop the audio and move through the file
quickly and then restart playback and make an end selection, is to unlink
timeline and edit selection and track and edit selection. But you and others
 seem to warn against this.

I don’t know whether there are anyways to do this. I suppose I could use
markers to get past the issue of PT unselecting my audio whenever I change
position and press the space bar.

Sorry to be contrary. I’m just trying to get used to doing quick audio
editing in PT, and it doesn’t seem practical to have to sit and wait for the
part of the project to come along when I want to make my end selection
point. I know that I want to cut the next minute of audio, so I don’t need
to listen to it, I need to get to my end point quickly.

Thanks for you patients and help.

First thing I'd look at in the Edit window would be to see whether you
changed the track display to show Volume or some other information rather
than waveform. Make sure you're displaying the waveform or else you won't be
deleting audio but rather some other thing like pan automation, send level,
 mute automation or something similar.

Ok, what have i done this time.
i’m trying to delete some audio from a project. for some reason i can’t seem
to delete anything. I had this all working before.

Basically i’ve gone in to the edit window, and interacted with the track
list table. I’ve located the tracks i want and hit v o space to select
them. when i look at them the tracks say selected. then i’ve just used my up
and down arrow to make my selection. when i press space my selection plays
no problem. but when i hit delete nothing seems to happen, the audio
remains. What have i missed now.
