I don't see where this is vulnerability. Of course, you can delete
the account you just created. It would be bad, if you were able to
delete other accounts in this way, but that's not the case.

I checked the configuration, but this looks fine:

page_template_regex = ur'(?P(?P\S+)Template)'

(see https://moinmo.in/HelpOnTemplates)

Hi Thomas: Could you help with this ?

I'm pretty sure this used to work in the past and I'm not aware
of any changes in the configuration. Do we perhaps have to run
some admin command to get the templates to show up again ?

Many thanks.

Re: [pydotorg-www] wiki page editing - add DBMS

2020-12-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
You first have to create a link to the page on this page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/DatabaseInterfaces

and then click on the link to create the page.

It seems that the template page does not get listed when
creating the page anymore. Not exactly sure why. So I'd suggest to
create an empty page and then copy over the text from
the template page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/DatabaseTemplate?action=edit=text

into the new page.

Thanks.

down data access to a smaller limited number of people.

That's a good workflow and we're using such a workflow in the EuroPython
Society - without the second step, though: we simply keep the document
open as live document for the intended audience to see. And we use
the same document for all meetings, since this is good for understanding
the history and development of how things come to be.

Editing usually starts by creating an agenda. This is then updated
during the meeting with the notes and results of the discussions /
votes.

I've been using the above approach with a live agenda / minutes document
for many years now and in several contexts, both professionally and
when working with volunteer organizations.

It's been working really well.

What's essential is that multiple people can edit the documents
at the same time. We're using Google Docs for this, but OnlyOffice
should work just as well.

> Also, when you say "completely non-working" I'm not sure what you mean.

Yes, you can log in and edit text, but that's where it ends. There
is no history of edits, it's not possible to revert an edit, get an
update of who edited what, there's no builtin workflow for things which
need reviews (such as success stories) and it's not easy to manage
permissions to certain areas of the website.

A true CMS covers all of the above. Google Docs and OnlyOffice
will cover most of the above, even though they are not real CMS
systems (think of Plone for example) either.

> I don't intend to fight anyone, but thank you for the kind wishes!

With "fighting" I meant that I tried to get the website fixed to
provide better CMS support running up against lots of walls along
the way. For the job board, I eventually started implementing patches
myself.

You may have noticed: the python.org website has a completely
non-working CMS. If you want to achieve collaboration, I'd strongly
suggest looking for something different (e.g. the NextCloud/OnlyOffice
idea you're floating) and focus on that.

The documents would then appear under a subdomain, but at least
there'd be proper control over who gets to edit what and, what's
really more important, enables other people than the handful with
python.org editing rights to submit content in a user friendly
way.

BTW: I may sound a bit negative on all this. That's because I
had been fighting to make python.org more user (= people providing
and maintaining content) friendly for several years without
success. If you have more luck: more power to you :-)

A long time ago (at the time we ran the Python brochure), there was an
effort to have a group screen submissions, but this failed due to the
website not implementing a usable workflow.

Now, it's better to have at least some new stories rather than none,
but there should be at least a bit of editorial screening, so perhaps
you could simply post the story here to get some additional feedback.

You mean this ticket, right ?

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/issues/1570

> Anybody here have a suggestion? We have something in the webmaster
> autoresponse message, I'd like to update it if there's a reliable place

The source code for python.org is managed in this repo:

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg

and it's (still) best to post any requests there:

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/issues

Now, that's just the website itself. The CMS content can be maintained
by people who have a python.org account and permission to edit it:

https://www.python.org/admin/pages/page/

In the past such requests also landed on the above issue tracker,
but I guess not a lot people monitor this anymore, so perhaps
it's better to write requests for edits to this ML instead
and hope that someone will go in and update the CMS.

I used to help with this, but no longer have time for it.

FWIW: I fixed and closed the above ticket.

Looks like the empty entry give anonymous users access to EditorsGroup

I'll remove the entry again.

Please don't remove Python2 material, but instead move it to a
Python 2 section or add a note that a page refers to Python 2 rather
than Python 3.

Pointing users to the wiki info section to retrieve this information
is *not* a good idea.

Please also note that while maintenance of Python 2 by the core
dev team will stop, there still is a large user base out there using it
and this will continue for at least another decade given how much code
has been written for Python 2, which will not be ported to Python 3.

We don't want to lose the existing Python 2 knowledge kept in the wiki.

Thanks,

Re: [pydotorg-www] Code of Conduct for wiki usage?

2019-05-04 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hi Chris,

the PSF CoC applies to the wiki as well, but I'm not sure I follow
your comments regarding the page in question.

This is the version of the page you edited:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/DocumentationTools?action=recall=41

It simply says that the package is a maintained fork. I could not find
language which suggests that pdoc3 is better than the original and
it's certainly not offensive in any way.

Could you please clarify ?

Thanks,

Re: [pydotorg-www] Account on wiki.python.org

2019-02-14 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
This is the usual problem we're facing with the wiki VM: it's overloaded
with bots or SEO crowds of people trying to create accounts.

There isn't much we can do, since the traffic doesn't originate
from just a few IP addresses.

At some point, I think we will have to make the VM get more CPU power
and esp. I/O bandwidth to better handle the load.

For now, I can only recommend to try at a later time.

Thanks.

[pydotorg-www] Pakt Publishing using wiki for SEO

2019-01-02 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
I don't know if you are aware, but Pakt has been publishing (apparently)
their complete list of Python books on the wiki, adding new titles
to the top of the page in an apparently automated way:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/AdvancedBooks
https://wiki.python.org/moin/AdvancedBooks?action=info

Not only that, but they removed older entries from the page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/AdvancedBooks?action=info_count=100=200

e.g. the Python Cookbook is no longer listed.

I don't think the purpose of the wiki should be SEO and even less
removing competitor links.

I think we should take action here, e.g. restore the old version of
the page and add a single link to the Pakt website instead of
the current endless list of entries.

Thoughts ?

I have restarted apache on the VM. I guess we will need a cleanup
of the users on the moin instance. The 144k users together with the
underpowered VM and frequent spikes in activity by bots trying to
register accounts are causing those delays.

These are intermittent problems with the VM the wiki is
running on, due to higher load (mostly bots trying to register
accounts). Please try again a bit later.

I think it's a timing issue again. I just tried an account creation
and got a 504 as well. However, in the logs I can see that the
request was actually processed fine and shows a 200.

Perhaps the timeout settings on front were changed, causing these
issues.

For some reason the account creation takes longer than 60 seconds
(measured around 70 seconds), which appears to be the front timeout.

Of course, it doesn't help that moin stores the user accounts
in individual files and we have more than 142k of those in a single
directory...

If it were that easy :-) We are using a custom template for the
wiki

> Do you think my normal registration did not work because my email was

Ok, I just tried Launchpad OpenID login and it is still working,
so either you were experiencing a time of high load on the server
which caused an internal timeout for OpenID verification or
something is wrong with your OpenID setup (LP moved to their
Ubuntu One SSO system a while ago, which introduced a couple
of changes).

Another possibility is that creating an account with OpenID
login fails generally for some reason.

The test I ran was for my account, but I have a password one
and only added OpenID for testing purposes some years ago.

I checked the log files but could not find any hint as to
what was going wrong. They are full of break-in attempts,
but no clear sign of an OpenID failure.

Could you please try again and give me the UTC timestamp of
when you tried. I can then narrow down the search in the log
files.

Thanks,

It's possible that OpenID using Launchpad stopped working. I believe
Google auth also doesn't work anymore.

Perhaps we ought to remove the OpenID mentions from the login page.
I just don't know where exactly to look for this in the templates.

It's well possible that this page was lost in the wiki attack
some years ago (it redirects to PythonHosting).

This is the last version I could find on archive.org:

Perhaps you could revive it ?!

FYI: The job board app itself is part of the python.org system,
so you need to have a login there and the right permissions

The job board team uses the wiki for management and documentation:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PSF%20Python%20Job%20Board

These are the people in charge of it:

Re: [pydotorg-www] PyCon Latam

2018-05-30 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hi Katia,

you will have to get approval from the PSF trademark committee
for using a PyCon name:

https://www.python.org/psf/trademarks/pycon/

We typically get requests for national conference, where
things are pretty straight forward. For more generic names
or ones which imply covering a whole region, we want to
make sure that the format can survive changes in teams and
locations. Such conferences often move around between different
countries and teams.

Once everything is in place, we can also give you a subdomain
on pycon.org, if you like.

Thanks,

You will need to file an issue on the python.org tracker:

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/issues

Someone with editing rights will then help get the content
up on the page, usually Berker :-)

I think it's better to have a generic entry at the top and
the more specific ones below.

Changes such as these, which essentially promote sites which makes
revenue off of ads, are not really useful and as can be seen in this
case, have other people complain.

I'll revert the change.

Re: [pydotorg-www] wiki maintenance ideas?

2017-08-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Keeping a wiki up to date is certainly possible, but it's a lot
of work and needs people who care about it or at least parts of it.

Specifically for the beginners resources, I could imagine that
we'd find people who are interested in this, but asking on this
list is probably not a good way to reach them.

Perhaps you could try on the psf-community list.

We do have a page for this:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/SiteImprovements

but it's outdated.

Perhaps archiving the older bits and reviving the page with
more focus on the wiki would help. We could then also move it
up higher on the front page.

Please use password based login instead. If you can provide

Hmm, this will not work well, since this list is the go to
place when asking for wiki edit permission and for reporting
other python.org related issues.

Could this be lifted again ?

BTW: Who do we need to contact for changes to this lists
configuration ? The -owner address ?

I found a new reference for the Komodo link and removed the
console.py one, since the only other package using that name
doesn't seem to use the cmd module.

Re: [pydotorg-www] Fwd: Google is rejecting contact emails

2017-04-19 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hello all,

this is not something the PSF can fix. We have the following
CNAME entry in the pycon.org record for you:

; in.pycon.org is managed by the PSSI (Anand B Pillai)
in.pycon.org. IN CNAME pycon.pssi.org.in.

so whatever configuration is needed, has to be done on the
pycon.pssi.org.in domain entry.

Also note that the Google error is referring to IPv6 errors on
the *sending* side, so the senders will probably have to
fix their IPv6 configuration (in particular, add reverse DNS
entries for their sending IPs, which people/ISPs often forget).

If you are forwarding emails to GMail, then you have to make
sure that the forwarder has these things configured.

At the moment, in.pycon.org doesn't have IPv6 DNS entries,
which may be causing the error.

Thanks,

I think we can drop the protection on that page.

At the same time, I don't think that Packt should be adding
their book links to more pages on the wiki. The two
book pages already mostly list Packt books and hardly any
of the alternatives.

After applying the patch, the problem with the truncation
appears to have gone. I was also able to successfully edit
pages.

Could you please also try and check ?

The truncation appears to be the result of this method:

http://hg.moinmo.in/moin/1.9/file/561b7a9c2bd9/MoinMoin/security/textcha.py#l175

which blindly removes characters from the question in combination
with this bug:

http://hg.moinmo.in/moin/1.9/diff/561b7a9c2bd9/MoinMoin/security/textcha.py

(hmac.new() defaults to MD5, but the ._extract_form_values() method
removes data based on the length of an SHA1 hash)

I guess it would be better to use a regexp for splitting off
the hash and timestamp.

I'll apply the fix for the hmac.new() manually now.

Has this been happening only since yesterday or before that as
well ? I'm asking because I upgraded moin on the VM yesterday,
so it may be related to the upgrade.

Many are probably from automated user record creation scripts
and most of those likely from the days where we did not have
textchas enabled.

We're currently getting around 75 accounts created per day,
so even with textchas, people have obviously found a way
to work around them.

[pydotorg-www] Removing/disabling inactive users from wiki.python.org

2016-11-08 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hello,

I have just upgraded the moin package on wiki.python.org to 1.9.9.
As part of this, we now have a new maintenance command to disable
or remove inactive users.

According to the tool inactive users are users who have never
edited a page on the wiki.

For wikis such as the PSF one, people do need a login to see some
of the pages, and editing is not necessarily done by everyone.

On the main wiki, I'm not aware of pages which are protected by
ACLs to require login to see (only to edit).

For Jython, I don't know at all, so won't touch this.

Since we currently have more than 88k user records for the Python
wiki, but only 4k active users, I'd like to experiment this command,
even though it's dangerous.

My feeling is that the slowness of the wiki is largely caused by
the many user records we have. Moin appears to these for subscriptions
when making edits to pages.

We have three options:
1. leave everything as is
2. disable all but the 4k active users who have made edits
3. remove all but the 4k active users who have made edits

Of course, we'd run a backup before applying any of this,
to be able to revert in case people complain.

Thoughts ?

I just checked: logins work fine.

BTW: We added more CPU power to the VM, so these timeouts should
happen less often than in the past.

It's probably best to file a bug on
https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/issues

or directly file a PR again:

The idea with the robots.txt file is a good one; not sure about
the suggestion to force a redirect to /3/, since those version,
albeit un-maintained may still be in use.
