Testing is always needed. What operating system do you use?

We prepare at least one "Release Candidate" during our release process.
would you be interested to test them (when available)?

Hello,

great opportunity for me to see how testing works from the inside and if

What page? There are many outdated pages.
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html is quite OK.

2. If yes, which feature(s) would need the most testing, or which
feature(s) have the most chances to contain bugs (so I can contribute and

As soon as we get the daily builds for Windows available again, we will
want to test new translations and several bugfixes. You are on Windows,
right?

3. Also, in the documentation section, it is mentioned that Virtual Box
is recommended.

The page above suggests VirtualBox as a "more sophisticated approach".
This is correct. Most volunteers are not expected to run their tests in
a Virtual Machine. So don't worry about this technicality, you can
perfectly start by installing development builds on your own system.

[orcmid]

I can only answer for myself.

I assume you mean a license Guest OS installed in a VM.

I only have two installed guests for the moment.

I have one Windows 10 Insider installed under the Hyper-V Manager that is part
of Windows 10 Pro on a machine that has the necessary hardware capability for
Hyper-V. I obtained that license during the Windows 10 Insider Technical
Preview (and at the time the Hyper-V host was a now-upgraded Windows 8.1
device).

I also have one Windows XP guest installed under Virtual Box on another
machine. The XP license is one I have from an MSDN subscription. This is not
for testing though - I need it as a web-development server. Virtual Box does
not work well on the machine that has Hyper-V. The advantage of Hyper-V over
Virtual Box is that Hyper-V will install 64-bit versions of Windows on a 64-bit
Host.

I don't have a current MSDN subscription, so I don't know what OS licenses
there are for test use at this time. If you are at an academic institution,
there may be suitable subscriptions available via the institution. Apache
Committers have been eligible for free Microsoft MSDN subscriptions in the
past. Those generally provide licenses to several operating-system
installations for test purposes, with OS install ISOs available for download
from the MSDN site. (I notice that I have existing keys for all versions from
Windows XP through Windows 8 but not 8.1 and 10, released after my last MSDN
subscription expired.)

I don't know of any other avenue in the case of Windows guests for installation
in/as VMs.

For testing on Linux of course, the easy solution is to install under Virtual
Box on whatever host you have available.

I don't know what solutions are available for running OSX as a guest OS in a VM.

RE: Introduction as QA volunteer

2016-02-08 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I think the recommendation for using a VM is so that a machine used for
production is not necessarily disturbed when conducting tests that may lead to
crashes that have collateral damage.

And, a VM can be backed up and reconstituted more readily.

I also suspect that it was written by Mac/POSIX-oriented developers who only
use Windows and maybe some Linux flavors in VMs [;<).

Whatever the reason, you are correct about licensing requirements for the guest
OS.

 - Dennis

PS: For Windows 10, and a VM on hardware that is capable of satisfying the
Windows 10 hardware/VM requirements, you might be able to obtain a Windows
Insider licensed install. You might need Windows 7 or later on the host PC
though. (This arrangement may have been changed since it worked for the
Windows 10 Technical Preview.)

Introduction as QA volunteer

2016-02-07 Thread Benoit Goderre
Hi!

I am thankful for this opportunity to join the team of volunteers as a
Quality Assurance Specialist. My name is Benoit Goderre and I have four
years of experience in the software industry. My favorite technique is
exploratory testing.

As I wish to start to contribute to the project, I have several questions:

   1. Is this project still going on? When I checked the QA page, I saw
that the last entry was made in 2013.
   2. If yes, which feature(s) would need the most testing, or which
feature(s) have the most chances to contain bugs (so I can contribute and
not just test rock solid, if those ever exist, features).
   3. Also, in the documentation section, it is mentioned that Virtual Box
is recommended. While I have a decent amount of experience with VMWare (and
I don't think Virtual Box should be much different), the usual problem lies
in the licensing when it comes to VM. Is there some information on this
   topic?

Thanks again for your time and I wish to speak with you soon.

Best Regards,

Benoit

Hello QA volunteers,

I am Josephat from Sydney, Australia and I would like to get involved in
Quality Assurance in the OpenOffice community.

I believe joining the Open Office QA will be a great way to learn about QA,
get practical experience and contribute to the open source community as an
aspiring Software Tester.

My background is in engineering, however over the last three years I have
enjoyed learning about coding and web development. I have a particular
interest in continuous improvement and Quality Assurance

I am excited about joining the QA OpenOffice as a volunteer and I look
forward to developing a career as a software tester.

Sincerely,

Josephat Mokamba

Hello Frank, it is very simple for you an and anyone else to join.

First, take a look at
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html just to have a
generic introduction.

Then, register for a Bugzilla account as instructed in that page.

And then you can:

1) Download and use the development version 4.1.2-RC2, available from
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/ ; currently, the
English version for Windows is at
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.2-rc2-r1707648/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe

2) Use the following link to find a list of issues to be checked:
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?bug_status=CONFIRMED&bug_status=ACCEPTED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=RESOLVED&bug_status=VERIFIED&bug_status=CLOSED&f1=flagtypes.name&list_id=170870&o1=substring&query_format=advanced&resolution=---&resolution=FIXED&v1=4.1.2_release_blocker%2B

The aim of QA is to bring issues from RESOLVED state to VERIFIED. To do
that, you can just put a comment in each issue that is not already
VERIFIED or CLOSED and state if it works for you or not.

You can get permission to flag issues as CLOSED or VERIFIED yourself by
asking on this list.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Welcome Frank,

Power users, such as I think you will find yourself to be, are perfect for
checking the boundaries and confirmation of defects for Apache OpenOffice.

Your participation is very welcome.

Others will suggest good places to start.

An important immediate case is verifying that there are no regressions in the
current AOO 4.1.2 release candidate and confirming that the defects claimed to
be fixed are (1) evidently fixed and (2) have no unintended consequences.

Please ask questions [;<).

Hello,

I am a long time user and advocate of Openoffice software. I can't
remember precisely when my first introduction to Openoffice was, but it
would have been around 8 -10 years ago. Openoffice has enabled me to work
on office files and documents, without having to afford Microsoft's Office
software. The extensiveness of capability and cross-compatibility, coupled
with ease of use, has kept me as a long time user of Openoffice.

Having experienced the benefits of the Openoffice software family, I want
the opportunity to give back, in any way that I can offer. Reading that
there is a place for debug verification, I believe that is something that I
can be of immediate assistance with. I love trying to push the limits of
software that I utilize, so this definitely fits.

I have office and technical skills, but not programming experience. I am a
long time CAD operator, and business office software user. Currently I am
a proposal process engineer working for KUKA Systems Aerospace Group. If
any of my professional skills or experience can be of use as an Openoffice
volunteer, I would be thrilled to offer my contributions.

Hello Preethi and welcome to Apache OpenOffice!

For general information on how you can get involved at QA here,
please see our Introduction to QA page:
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

You will need a Bugzilla account (information on this page) to help
with QA.

Once you get your account, feel free to help with UNCONFIRMED issues
listed in the "Easy QA Task: Confirm New Defect Reports" section.
This is an ongoing task. (If you need additional permissions to
confirm tasks, please post a message to this list.)

Right now, we are testing out a preliminary candidate for the 4.1.2
release. If you would like to get involved in that, please see how
to obtain the 4.1.2 RC1 candidate on this wiki page:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.2

and test out the "Release blockers approved and ported to AOO 4.1.2"
from the QA section.

Wow, it sounds like you have a great set of skills and experience.
We can always use someone with this kind of background.

If you are entirely new to open source you might want to review some
of the other orientation pages as well, so you get a feel for how
we're organized and how we make decisions. It is very different from
a hierarchical top-down corporate structure. We're very "flat" and
self-directed.

We just release Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 last week. So reviewing
incoming bug reports from users, to see if there is anything
surprising (we hope not!) found by them in this release is a good
place to start. You can find details in the "Easy QA Task: Confirm
New Defect Reports" section of the QA Orientation page.

New QA Volunteer

2014-08-20 Thread victoria.hardy

Hello everyone,
My name is Victoria Hardy. I am a QA tester working for Vecna
Technologies in Cambridge. My company has a strong emphasis on community
service and open source projects, so I have decide to get involved with
the OpenOffice community. I have been a software tester for about 2
years. I have particular experience with manual testing, test case
writing, and accessibility standards for software. Although I have
mostly been doing manual testing I know how to use Selenium and I hope
to learn jBehave soon. I have some programming skills in Java, C++ and
Python.
What I don't really have experience with is the Open Source Community. I
have been reading through the QA orientation module. I have opened a
Bugzilla account. I am used to working with Jira, but Bugzilla looks
fairly similar so I don't think the learning curve on it should be that
steep. Perhaps it would be best for me to start with reviewing some of
the bug reports? Is there a specific procedure for doing that?

I look forward to working with you all.

Thank you,
 Victoria

Please review our archives[1] and recent emails about the processes for
testing the new AOO 4.1.1 showstopper bugs and report on them. Make sure to
mention the machines (or VMs) at your disposal for testing the application

Hi qa,
I would like to introduce myself: I'm Amali from Victoria, Australia. I've four
years of real experience in software, mostly in C++. Operating systems I've
worked with and known about are Unix, Linux, and Windows. I've got Junior Linux
certification LPIC-1 as well.

I'm interested in C++, Python, Perl, Linux projects.
I've got coding experience in C++ and I've done a good amount of manual testing
as well; however, I would like to learn more about QA, in areas such as test
automation, writing scripts, and automatic testing.

thanks,
amali.

Hi,

great, you are welcome!
I did not find any Bugzilla activity of ambi...@gmail.com, so it seems
you are new here?

You should create an account for ,
check UNCONFIRMED bugs, try to reproduce the problem, add comments with
useful information.

In parallel you should read

,

Don't worry, real AOO-qa-life is more simple than it looks while you
read all that stuff.

Do not hesitate to add me to CC in a bug if you are not sure whether you
are right.

Tell us your Bugzilla account here, a mentor can follow your activity,
help you, change Bug Status and other fields due to your test results as
long as your permissions will not allow that.

After some activity our Bugzilla administrators will rise your permissions.

Hello,

This is Ambika Rajagopalan, with ~6 years of QA experience in both manual

openoffice QA team and get better knowledge about open sourcing.

I would really appreciate if someone help me from where I can get the

getting familiarized but I don't find a page with latest build.

Thanks

On a separate note the buildbot is running now
http://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/win/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Win_x86_install_en-US_1586681.exe

So you can get the development version.

Afaik Bugzilla should be automated, check your spam box. Or try to do it again.

The only manual process is to upgrade your account level to QA auditor.
You have the following permission bits set on your account:
canconfirm Can confirm a bug or mark it a duplicate
editbugsCan edit all bug fields
qa-team Members of the AOO QA team
registered-user All registered users

I also wonder if maybe Yuhzen can help speed out the process.

then get a confirmation email.
This confirmation email will have a url which you can click, or
alternatively just reply to it without modification. once you do that

Hello Jochen,

I've added you to the qa-team in Bugzilla, so you should be OK there now.

We had some spam issues on the MWiki and new accounts were suspended.
But Andrea might be able to help you get in.

As for testing, we're right now doing verification testing of the 4.1
beta release candidate, to make sure that the critical bugs that the
developers marked as fixed are actually fixed. If you want to help
with that Yuzhen can help you get started.

But you mentioned unit testing... You might want to ask on the dev
mailing list about that (d...@openoffice.apache.org). QA doesn't touch
unit testing. But we do have a Java/Eclipse based GUI automation
testing framework that needs some attention, if you are interested in
that.

Hi Purva,

Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project!

Are you an OpenOffice users? If not you'll want to download the
latest version and poke around: http://www.openoffice.org/download

We just released our 4.0 version a couple of weeks ago. In the first
week it was downloaded over 1 million times!

We don't yet have a more recent build from the developers. So we're
not doing any formal testing right now. Most of us are focused on
reviewing incoming bug reports from users. Users tend to write vague
defect reports. We try to work with them to gather additional details
and if possible confirm the defect report and pass it on to the
developers to look at. In many cases the bugs are duplicates and we
can close the duplicate report quickly. In some cases the user report
is a "how to" question not a bug, and we refer them to the support
forum.

So if you'd like to help us with confirming new bug reports, the
assistance would be much appreciated.

You can find specific steps to get started on our website. We have a
few pages of "orientation" information for new volunteers here:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/

If you are new to working on an open source project I'd recommend
skimming the Level 1 and Level 2 topics for background. And I do mean
skim. No need to spend hours reading all that. But then focus on the
"Introduction to QA" topic:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

That has some specific tasks for you to start with, subscribing to
mailing lists, creating a Bugzilla account, adding your info to the
wiki, etc. Once you've done that you can help with the "Easy QA Task:
Confirm New Defect Reports" items.

Don't hesitate to send along any questions!

-Rob

Hello Keki,   Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project.  I apologize
for not responding earlier.

We have some web pages to help orient new QA volunteers to the
project.  You might want to start here:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

Since you already have some QA experience much of this will be review.
But it will help you get started with things like signing up for a
Bugzilla account.

You mention experience with Java and JUnit.  You might want to then
take a look at our test automation framework.  It allows us to define
test cases using JUnit and run those against the OpenOffice GUI.

More info on the test automation is here:

http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/test_automation_guide

Give that a try, and if you have any questions post to the list and me
or one of the other volunteers will try to help.

Thanks!

Hello Sandhya,

Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project and our QA team!

I'm Rob, a member of the project helping to coordinate new volunteers.
I'm in Massachusetts, where we just had two feet of snow. Nothing
like San Jose!

We have a web page with information for new volunteers here:
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

Although, with your background, I doubt this page will teach you
anything new about the practice and discipline of QA, it will get you
up to speed on our local process, and direct you to sign up for a
Bugzilla account and other things.

Since you have a programming background also, you might be interested
in our Java-based automation framework. There is a link to more
information in the above referenced document.

And happy to have you!
