@Andyzendy #50 is good. However, would it be possible to have new
design based on #50a (e.g. #50a) with a globe inside Q or a raster +
vector graphics inside the Q.

Thanks, Noli

Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] [Qgis-psc] Logo

2013-04-25 Thread Otto Dassau
Hi,

I would also like to keep it abstract and only Qgis as text in the logo and
not Quantum GIS. I like the idea of #33. It looks still like an evolution of
our current logo with arrow.

http://99designs.de/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/33

But I would also like to see #33 more abstract and less colourful as in #65.

http://99designs.de/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/65

So my favourite would be a mixture between #33 and #65 and only with QGIS

Yes, an evolution of the current logo would be good for recognition
(although eventually people will get used to any)

#334 falls into this category as well, but I'd prefer to have something
which can be put onto a transparent background.

I like the logos from dakcarto [2] but only the simplest with an arrow for
the Q and if it get rid of the hands.
Keeping the globe inside, removing the hands, and (why not) add the colour
from the removed hands on some of the globe stripes, and I would like it :)

FWIW, I think that #336 is really good, but it was probably added to late to be
really noticed.

A couple of people said they like the other variations of it, by I think the
one which has the triangle on the Q in a different colour is no good because it
isn't clear enough that it is a Q. Even in #336 I guess it might not be clear
enough, but the triangle does seem cool compared to a regular stroke on the Q...

Of course, I'm still not convinced it is better than the proposal here:

Hi

nbo...@purecaffeine.com wrote:
 Hi all,

I only subscribed to this mailing list this morning so I'm a little late to
the party here, but just want to contribute some of my knowledge on the
subject to help you with selecting a logo.

Whilst a designer, I'm not a graphic designer, so a) I'm not going to design
you a logo; and b) I won't critique the existing logo options that are on
 the table.

My speciality is in user experience design which covers everything from
strategic product management and positioning through to usability,
accessibility, instructional design and user testing of existing and
 prototype digital interfaces.

Just a few points that I would like you to think about:

 1. The logo should work in a square format which usually means taking the
primary graphical device and having it stand on its own without the full
label or tagline; in your case this means the Q. The square format will be
used as the favicon and desktop app icon etc. From what I've seen so far,
the options are all of the full landscape oriented logo — you need to see
 how they'll break down.

 2. The app/project name needs to recognisable in the logo and preferably the
QGIS needs to be discernible, but recognition will suffice. If you laid
out a sheet with a bunch of competitor products' logos and your logo in
front of someone and asked them to point to the logo for QGIS, you want to
have a pretty good (perfect) success rate.

 3. Think of sub-brands, alternatives and configurations of the logo. It
would be nice if the base logo could be extended so that you can identify
public vs development versions of the app, QGIS Desktop vs Browser
(currently all three have the same logo). This could be achieved through
changing the highlight colour, adding or modifying graphical devices etc.
This is something that you want to ask the graphic designer to consider
otherwise you run the risk of having to use the logo as is or clunkily
bastardizing it for every variation you figure you need later.

Thanks for your good insights - particularly #3 is good food for thought.

Regards

Tim

 Hope that helps.

And what does this designer think about using it as a desktop icon of

Andyzendy (#50) for me : simple, easily downscalable to 16x16 (great for

I really don't understand the love for #50. It either reads as
GIS-uantum, or QGIS-uantum or on third inspection QGIS-Quantum. Its
impossible to read it as Quantum GIS. I can't think of any other
corporate logo that is that unreadable - except maybe CNN which I
sometimes parse as CMI :). #64 from the same designer at least gets it
in the right order, but the skinny 'uantum' looks uneasily perched on
the 'GIS'. Take that away and all you have is a circle with a triangle
trying hard to be either a very fat map pin or a Q.

Have a quick google for something like best product logos and you
should see that ease of readability of the product name is paramount.
If you can't look at a proposed logo and instantly see either QGIS
or Quantum GIS then that logo fails. Anything that typesets the Q of
Quantum radically different from the uantum such that they just
don't work together, fails. Of course a very clever designer can bend
or break these rules, and especially with an already-recognised brand
(eg CNN again) where the logo (word) part of the design is less
important than it's visual recognition as a wordless symbol. Any
squiggle of parallel lines with that same curvature and style looks
like CNN.

I think the problem overall is the tension between getting qgis
and quantum gis in the same logo. I think I would prefer to see a
logo that uses the full name (Quantum GIS) but with a stylized Q
device that isn't part of the readable part of the text, e.g.

http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/233
http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/238
http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/165
http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/155

http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/43

Now I'm not saying any of these are good/bad/indifferent, but they all
show the style I prefer - instantly readable 'Quantum GIS' with a
separate Q that can be stylised as a recongisable mark.

Ah, the joy of aesthetics... Feel free to ignore any of the thoughts
above, its just the way my synapses are responding!

I have now noticed the #7.

http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/7

I do not like it right away, but I think it has the right principles. The
original\actual logo has an north arrow or a compass needle, we could pick
on that. This logo, has clearly transformed the Q into a compass. A few
changes to incorporate the word Quantum in the same color as the Q and it
could work.

Using a strong yellow for q, it could became a revamped (more modern)
version of the original logo.

It would be nice if it were something derived from de OSGeo logo.

Well, I don't like it. First off, I don't get it. At a glance, I have no
idea what it's trying to convey or why there is so much text.

Secondly, I think it is imperative for a logo design to offer a shortened
square aspect, e.g. for an icon. The Q in QGIS obviously lends itself to
this, and IMO works well for it; so I think a design that leverages that
single character will be more versatile, than say one that only works well
 for a web site header.

I could imagine that something following the idea of

would work too.

From all the submitted ones so far, I'd still go with
http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/50

I don't see any bird in
http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/118and
I don't think it would work well as an application icon.

QGIS has no animal. Do we want one? Or stick to the Q? In my opinion, so
far, the consensus seemed to be that we want to stick with the Q at least.

Best wishes,

Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] [Qgis-psc] Logo

2013-04-16 Thread AntonioLocandro
I would go for that also, #50, can we also ask the designer to add a world
inside like #126 in a lighter shade of grey and see how it works.

In my view #50 would be a great logo as it is for the project and then the
Q part can be used for the desktop icon and make some great looking
t-shirts like shown in #55. This looks modern, professional and conveys what
QGIS aspires. I would also suggest that logo colors be used in the icon
theme where possible once the final logo is approved to have some
uniformity.

#201 #200 #199 don't look GIS related
#198 looks like a copy of #50
#196 #195 #194 looks, well something else
#192 looks aweful
#191 #190,#186 look to simple
#187 #185 #183 #182 #181 #180 #178 #177 #176 #175 #171 #170 #169 #168 #167

#151 #150 #149 #148 #147 #146 #145 are just ugly

I think #126 has some potential but I wouldn't vote for it myself, #118
would work well for a desktop icon I guess and #50 is what I am favoring
right now, most people call Quantum GIS just QGIS anyway now and this logo
kind of reflects it by making it more prominent

I like the
http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/50
entry, but I would like to see it with the GIS slightly smaller so that it is
not on the same line as the top of the Q. This would make the Q element of
the logo/name more prevalent and would make the Q as a standalone icon for
the application more identifiable, in my opinion.

 looks very good printed too.

 http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/88

Actually, I think I prefer this #88 entry upon second review. I agree with your
point that the Q icon is more distinct. This also has the GIS portion of the
logo reduced and offset from the top horizontal line of the Q as I was
suggesting for #50. I also like the flow of uantum off the tail of the Q.
Lastly, it looks like a Q.

I believe that 2.0 deserves a brand new logo, so any of the old logo revamped
 styles (like #166, #49, #42) don't seam to be a good option.

+1

I don't think the Q is Q-y enough, and is a bit detached from uantum.

QGIS has no animal. Do we want one? Or stick to the Q? In my opinion, so
far, the consensus seemed to be that we want to stick with the Q at least.

If I could draw cartoons, we'd have Quentin the Qgis Quokka:

http://a-z-animals.com/animals/quokka/

Anyone for 84? The styling of the Q looks like roads or other map waymarkings:

I personnaly prefer #50 than #88, because 88 uses a too much seen point of
interest logo : used by Google, used by many open source maps, etc. It
won't say hey it's QGIS, it will say Hey, its 'geolocation'

I kind of like the 84 too, as it remains simple but meaningfull

2013-04-15 Thread Antonio Locandro
From the logos so far I would vote for #64 or #50, I guess #50 Works better
for me it looks a Little better looking the spacing of the letters, but that
can be refined in #64, also I like a bit more the tone for #50 plus I like the
idea #55 of T-shirt for the Project

Would you consider eliminating the worst looking ones my vote for worst are
#134 #121 #105 #82 #81 #79 #67 #68 #74 #66 #40 #41 #34 #35 #37 #38 #13 #6 #5 I
would like to see #64 with a globe within the Q very light colors, just to
see it that could work #91 for some reason it quite doesn't looks so good the
marker withing the Q, looks a Little bit off for me Just my thoughts

Well, I don't like it. First off, I don't get it. At a glance, I have no
idea what it's trying to convey or why there is so much text.

Secondly, I think it is imperative for a logo design to offer a shortened
square aspect, e.g. for an icon. The Q in QGIS obviously lends itself to
this, and IMO works well for it; so I think a design that leverages that
single character will be more versatile, than say one that only works well
for a web site header.
