Hi On Fri, Apr 19, 2013 at 10:38 AM, Nathanael Boehm nbo...@purecaffeine.com wrote: Hi all, I only subscribed to this mailing list this morning so I'm a little late to the party here, but just want to contribute some of my knowledge on the subject to help you with selecting a logo. Whilst a designer, I'm not a graphic designer, so a) I'm not going to design you a logo; and b) I won't critique the existing logo options that are on the table. My speciality is in user experience design which covers everything from strategic product management and positioning through to usability, accessibility, instructional design and user testing of existing and prototype digital interfaces. Just a few points that I would like you to think about: 1. The logo should work in a square format which usually means taking the primary graphical device and having it stand on its own without the full label or tagline; in your case this means the Q. The square format will be used as the favicon and desktop app icon etc. From what I've seen so far, the options are all of the full landscape oriented logo — you need to see how they'll break down. 2. The app/project name needs to recognisable in the logo and preferably the QGIS needs to be discernible, but recognition will suffice. If you laid out a sheet with a bunch of competitor products' logos and your logo in front of someone and asked them to point to the logo for QGIS, you want to have a pretty good (perfect) success rate. 3. Think of sub-brands, alternatives and configurations of the logo. It would be nice if the base logo could be extended so that you can identify public vs development versions of the app, QGIS Desktop vs Browser (currently all three have the same logo). This could be achieved through changing the highlight colour, adding or modifying graphical devices etc. This is something that you want to ask the graphic designer to consider otherwise you run the risk of having to use the logo as is or clunkily bastardizing it for every variation you figure you need later. Thanks for your good insights - particularly #3 is good food for thought. Regards Tim Hope that helps. It either reads as GIS-uantum, or QGIS-uantum or on third inspection QGIS-Quantum. Its impossible to read it as Quantum GIS. I can't think of any other corporate logo that is that unreadable - except maybe CNN which I sometimes parse as CMI :). #64 from the same designer at least gets it in the right order, but the skinny 'uantum' looks uneasily perched on the 'GIS'. Take that away and all you have is a circle with a triangle trying hard to be either a very fat map pin or a Q. Have a quick google for something like best product logos and you should see that ease of readability of the product name is paramount. If you can't look at a proposed logo and instantly see either QGIS or Quantum GIS then that logo fails. Anything that typesets the Q of Quantum radically different from the uantum such that they just don't work together, fails. Of course a very clever designer can bend or break these rules, and especially with an already-recognised brand (eg CNN again) where the logo (word) part of the design is less important than it's visual recognition as a wordless symbol. Any squiggle of parallel lines with that same curvature and style looks like CNN. I think the problem overall is the tension between getting qgis and quantum gis in the same logo. I think I would prefer to see a logo that uses the full name (Quantum GIS) but with a stylized Q device that isn't part of the readable part of the text, e.g. http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/233 http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/238 http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/165 http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/155 http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/142 http://99designs.co.uk/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/43 Now I'm not saying any of these are good/bad/indifferent, but they all show the style I prefer - instantly readable 'Quantum GIS' with a separate Q that can be stylised as a recongisable mark. Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] [Qgis-psc] Logo
I would go for that also, #50, can we also ask the designer to add a world inside like #126 in a lighter shade of grey and see how it works. In my view #50 would be a great logo as it is for the project and then the Q part can be used for the desktop icon and make some great looking t-shirts like shown in #55. This looks modern, professional and conveys what QGIS aspires. I would also suggest that logo colors be used in the icon theme where possible once the final logo is approved to have some uniformity. Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] [Qgis-psc] Logo
I like the http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/50 entry, but I would like to see it with the GIS slightly smaller so that it is not on the same line as the top of the Q. This would make the Q element of the logo/name more prevalent and would make the Q as a standalone icon for the application more identifiable, in my opinion. I agree with your point that the Q icon is more distinct. This also has the GIS portion of the logo reduced and offset from the top horizontal line of the Q as I was suggesting for #50. I also like the flow of uantum off the tail of the Q. Lastly, it looks like a Q. I believe that 2.0 deserves a brand new logo, so any of the old logo revamped styles (like #166, #49, #42) don't seam to be a good option. +1 Alexandre Neto On Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 5:09 PM, Régis Haubourg regis.haubo...@eau-adour-garonne.fr wrote: John C. Secondly, I think it is imperative for a logo design to offer a shortened square aspect, e.g. for an icon. The Q in QGIS obviously lends itself to this, and IMO works well for it; so I think a design that leverages that single character will be more versatile, than say one that only works well for a web site header. Here is my doodle at a Q based logo that is round and will work well in such contexts: https://plus.google.com/u/0/101650015976513787909/posts/1XkMMsEMV6m Regards Tim Regards, Larry On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 3:32 PM, Paolo Cavallini cavall...@faunalia.it wrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Il 15/04/2013 03:14, Nathan Woodrow ha scritto: Hey All, http://99designs.com.au/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/64 In this case the logo as we use it now would be the Q, that is a black circle with the green arrow, right? Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] [Qgis-psc] Logo
One thing about this logo is to make sure it doesn't look anything like any other existing mappy s/w logos or any other product with Quantum in the name. Doing a google image search for Quantum logo will show you about 200 different corporate logos with 'Quantum' in the name! Hey Larry, Thanks for the feedback. I had the same feelings but kind of like the design, maybe just not for QGIS :) - Nathan On Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 1:52 AM, Larry Shaffer lar...@dakotacarto.comwrote: Hi Nathan, On Sun, Apr 14, 2013 at 11:43 PM, Nathan Woodrow madman...@gmail.comwrote: What do people think of http://99designs.com.au/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/115 and http://99designs.com.au/logo-design/contests/qgis-needs-logo-210397/entries/117 Well, I don't like it.
