Re: [Qgis-user] Repairing Topology Errors

2016-02-08 Thread Bernhard Ströbl

Hi,

when looking at topology errors I can imagine three types
1) borders are not identical, i.e. you missed one vertex during digitizing
2) overlaps
3) gaps

ad 1) in my experience it is easy to miss a vertex when digitizing along
an existing edge, the auto-trace plugin may help in this respect and
also "avoid intersections" (although you seem to have had problems with
it). Snapping must be activated, of course. You cannot snap without it
because you never hit the exact same point twice.
So for your edit layer you should snap to vertex with a reasonable
snapping distance and "avoid intersections". Thus you should be set to
not miss any vertices.

fix: only manually AFAIK
2) have "avoid intersections" active
fix: I use GRASS with its topological data model to identify all
averlaps and use Processing's "eliminate sliver polygons" to get rid of them

3) no way to avoid them because IMHO they could be intended
fix: same as 2)

Hello Group,

I have been manually creating a few simple polygons, always intending to
have no gaps, slivers or overlaps. To do this I use snapping and
occasionally the Autotrace feature.

However, when I run the topology checker, it often flags a variety of
errors although I am careful to create polygons by only snapping to
existing vertices of adjacent polygons. It does a great job of finding
the errors, but I can find no instructions on methodology for repairing
them.

Any suggesting on repairing topology errors easily?

three layers and it was selected the "avoid intersections" option,
then, when I added new digitized polygons, they were splitted or
deleted (as you tell) because new polygons were intersecting marked

Yes it was something simple, my foul. Is it not same trouble?. If so,
Check it in "Configuration --> Snapping options --> Change the

polygons from another shapefile layer and pasting them into the

In almost every case, these features disappear.Â
There is an entity entry in the attribute table but there are no

2016-02-08 Thread Mats Elfström
Hi Grant!
You need to know your data. That is prio one.
As the open API:s for file geodatabases do not support raster storage, you
will need to get back to your supplier and request a data format you can
handle.
I nevers store rasters in gdb since it is a dead end.
There are many other raster formats, well suited for GIS data to choose
from.
GeoTIFF and ecw are my favourites since they contain (or can contain)
georeferencing information.

If there was a simple template to fill in, which calculated the relative

Stefan, thanks for clarifying that NINA is a private organization. And
yes, crowd funding is also a good way to support new features, esp. for
larger efforts or feature wishes one cannot finance from within a single
organization.

One idea with the goal of minimizing bureaucracy when trying to fund
smaller features from time to time is to buy an hourly pool (say 25, 50
or 100 hours) at the QGIS developer/supporter of your choice. I did that
at my previous employer and could then flexibly use this hourly pool to
get either support or trigger smaller fixes and developments.

Hi Dave,

Glad to hear that the plugin works as expected.

Note that starting from QGIS 2.8 there is a live "heatmap renderer" in
QGIS which you can use instead of the plugin. This should also work fine
with filtered data.

[Qgis-user] heatmap plugin and layers controlled by a filter

2016-02-08 Thread dave42
Hi list

A silly question about the heatmap plugin

I have defined a layer and applied a filter to the layer so only some parts
are displayed.

When I attempt to use the heatmap plugin, it seems to ignore the filter and
use the entire layer as input to the heatmap. If there any way that I can
apply a filter to the data that heatmap plugin is going to use to create a
result.

regards
dave

Rasters inside File Geodatabase are not currently supported by either
the OpenFileGDB or the ESRI FileGDB drivers of GDAL. Unfortunately you
will need to find someone with a copy of Arc to convert those out to

2016-02-08 Thread Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi again,

Indeed, for us enterprise users a nice collection/overview of reasons for
working with and paying for FOSS (including a howto) could be really helpful
when discussing with decision makers.

I remember Paolo had a post in that direction:
https://faunaliagis.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/6-reasons-to-pay-for-open-source-software/

A critical point might also be that it can be simply more easy, to use money on
proprietary software. You have probably only one local dealer, you get a price
and you know more or less what you get for your money. Once you made your
decision on a software, sat aside your annual license fees and accepted that
this has to be payed, things go more or less automatically... With the legal
entity, QGIS is maybe on a good way there. I could also imagine, that the
grouping the many feature requests into (crowd) fundable packages might be
helpful. In some cases the gentle push from a starting crowd funding activity
(or when it is about to end) can be enough to make people to use some money...

Cheers
Stefan

In the list of things you do while digitizing, I miss the option to tick
"Avoid intersections"-checkbox in the snapping option for your polygons
layer. Actually, I never snap to existing vertices (maybe only the first
and the last of adjacent polygons), but simply click into the adjacent
polygons and then out again. Ticking "Avoid intersections" will
automatically create the common border of the new polygon with the new
one. So there is generally no need for any autotrace or carefully
digitizing on existing vertices

Maybe you just forgot to mention this, but having many errors looks to me
that this option might be missing in your workflow.

Any suggesting on repairing topology errors easily?

Cleaning up topology errors is best done with GRASS v.clean through the
processing toolbox.
I normally use the bpol option, but more important is to use the advanced
options there and setting the thresholds for snapping and the minimum area
for resulting polygons. You might have to experiment with those settings
and check the results.
If you still have slivers cause the snapping can't connect enough existing
vertices, try "Densify geometries given an interval" to add more vertices
before the cleaning. You can remove those extra vertices later again with
"Simplify geometries" from the tool box.

That's my usual workflow, maybe other have better tools.
I never bother to use the topology checker, am simply too lazy for that
and doing this stuff manually.

Thank you, Cheers . . . . . . . . Spring Harrison

Good luck

Re: [Qgis-user] Grass 7 plugin osx?

2016-02-08 Thread William Kyngesburye
Yeah, I build my QGIS with GRASS 6, I haven't switched to G7 yet. I'm not sure
of my exact reasoning, I think partly because of possibly not quite complete
support for G7 (either directly in QGIS or with Processing), or G7 was still
not final at the time. I also recall there were issues building both G6 and G7
into QGIS at the same time.

I can look into it for the next release. But I won't be updating current
packages for G7.

Hi Nyall, Richard, and Andreas,

For me it is all fine if you give the hint on funding, just like Andreas did,
knowing whom he is talking to. And I think he has a lot of valid points in his
answer.

Unfortunately, it is not always that simple, even for people using QGIS in
bigger organizations, to mobilize money for things they like to see implemented
(believe me, I wish it was)...

On your list, Nyall, I would add Crowd funding as a fifth (and quite popular)
way of getting things into QGIS. And of course all fife can be mixed to some
extent...

Anyway, keep up with your good work regardless if paid or voluntary. As I see
it, the mix is what makes the project successful...

Cheers

Well, the reality is that there's a very limited number of ways in which new
features get implemented in QGIS:

1. Write it yourself. (Requires knowledge of QGIS source and c++)

2. Pay someone else to write it for you (requires money)

3. Wait for someone else to write/pay for it (requires patience and hope that
your request is something someone else really needs)

4. Try to convince someone to donate their work/free time to do it for you
(requires super levels of negotiating and finding the magic words to say to
developers on irc/email/etc, or a project which is sufficiently interesting to
attract a developer's attention regardless.)

I don't think there's any other ways code gets added to QGIS.

(Note that I'm *not* discounting all the non development volunteer/paid QGIS
work, I'm just referring to how features can get added.)

Given this, I think it's fine to direct people who request stuff to the most
direct and reliable way to make changes happen - option 2 above. Just saying
"file a feature request" alone isn't all that helpful (it's effectively options
3 or 4 above). It's also very helpful to also let them know how they can make
these changes happen quickly.

Good point. I keep meaning to write this up properly at some stage as
a blog post, so keep the suggestions coming. I think it'd be useful to
have all this stuff outlined and explained so that people can make
informed decisions about the best way to get their requests fulfilled.

Re: [Qgis-user] adding points within polygons

2016-02-08 Thread Brent Wood
Which version of QGIS are you using? This is in the dev version which I'm using
(on Linux), but not in QGIS 2.8 (just looked at that on another laptop -
Geometry tools is there - but not the centroid one). I don't know if it is in
2.12 or not.

You can also install the "realcentroids" plugin. This seems to create a replica
of the polygon table, but creates a point feature to replace the polygon, which
should also do what you want.
I just tried it & it worked in a simple test case. Perhaps your easiest option.

There is also a processing -> qgis geoalgorithms -> polygon centroid function,
but this can return a point which does not lie within the polygon if the
polygon is concave.
A bit more cumbersome - but you can also:
 edit the polygon layer,
open the attribute table
start the field calculatorcreate a new (real no with decimals) column as the X
value ie: X($geometry)
create a new column as the Y value ie: Y($geometry)save as CSV file
open the CSV file & define it as a point layer using the new X & Y columns for
coords

You now have a point layer of centroids (but note that centroids can lie
outside a concave polygon):-)

So kind of you to respond. I am afraid "geometry tools" is not an option on my
Vector pull down menu or toolbar. Do I need a plug-in?
I quite agree with you about the centrality of a proper relational database
underpinning the gis. It is getting from one to the other that is giving me the

 Hi
People's answers to Grant's question were so clear I'm hoping that
something similar might exist to facilitate my task. I have 32k of
polygons representing every lot in the city of Montreal in 1903. I also
have the 1901 census returns coded by household (95k of them) to those
lots. Is there a simple way to have Qgis place points within each lot
 polygon for the corresponding households?
 Thanks in advance.

[Qgis-user] Repairing Topology Errors

2016-02-08 Thread Springfield Harrison

Hello Group,
I have
been manually creating a few simple polygons, always intending to have no
gaps, slivers or overlaps.  To do this I use snapping and
occasionally the Autotrace feature.
However,
when I run the topology checker, it often flags a variety of errors
although I am careful to create polygons by only snapping to existing
vertices of adjacent polygons.  It does a great job of finding the
errors, but I can find no instructions on methodology for repairing
them.
Any
suggesting on repairing topology errors easily?

Thank you, Cheers

Re: [Qgis-user] adding points within polygons

2016-02-08 Thread Alex M
It comes with QGIS, as long as you installed python support (default on
most things, except some Linux platforms). To activate it enable the
ftools plugin in the plugin manager. FYI there should also be options in
the Processing Toolbox.

I will also take this moment to note, that Centroid will not ensure your
point is always inside the polygon (Think quarter moon shapes, or multi
polygons). There is a function in Spatialite, Postgis, etc, called Point
on Surface that ensures you get a centroid like point that is guaranteed
to be inside the polygon.

Enjoy,
Alex

So kind of you to respond. I am afraid "geometry tools" is not an option
on my Vector pull down menu or toolbar. Do I need a plug-in?
I quite agree with you about the centrality of a proper relational
database underpinning the gis. It is getting from one to the other that
is giving me the headaches.

I have not come across this error (so far) when working with
shapefiles, and we often exchange shapefiles generated in QGIS with
ArcGis people. Is it a problem with data with lots of attributes? Will
need to test with 2.10 and 2.12.

[Qgis-user] Possibility to disable Vertex Editor Panel?

2016-02-08 Thread JoshS
Hello,

in QGIS 2.12 (Windows 64bit) if you select the Node Tool and click on a Node
in an editable vector layer a dialog called "Vertex Editor" shows up. This
tool can be very useful. However most of the time I don't need it. Is there
a possibility to disable the Vertex Editor Panel so it doesn't show up
automatically? For me this is important because I am using a Plugin that has
a special UI and the Vertex Editor Panel just doesn't fit in.

Thank you very much!

Josh

Re: [Qgis-user] ARCGIS Geodatabase import

2016-02-08 Thread Clifford Snow
QGIS should be able to open FileGDB. When opening the vector file, select
"directory" instead of file. You will be prompted to select which layers
you want to add.

To verify if your gdal is capable of opening FileGDB, you can run "ogrinfo
--formats" to get a list of supported formats.

shapefile?
If so, you have broken the shape file by updating it outside of ESRI
applications.
The FID is the internal key between the geometry and the dbase attribute
table, and it should never be altered or trusted, or used for any purpose.
Actually, QGis ought to hide that field by default.

Hi Chris,

This option does not appear on already existing feature types.

Please add a new writer (independent from the ones you already have in your
workspace) and make sure you uncheck the Option "Create Generic Spatial
Columns".

Then, in the next dialogue - the Feature Type Properties Dialogue have a look
in the "General" tab - not the "Format Parameters" tab.

Have a look at the two attached screenshots.

I am also in the 2015 edition.

Hope this helps,

Hi Chris,

Ah yes - sorry. Forgot about that.

Here are the instructions:

In FME, if you add a writer for a Postgis database have a look into the
"Parameters" dialogue. In there you find a checkbox labeled "Create Generic
Spatial Columns". --> make sure you uncheck this checkbox.

Then if you add a new Feature type you will find a drop-down box in the
"General" tab labeled with "Geometry". There you can select the geometry type,
such as "postgis_point" or "postgis_linestring".

Can you please let me know if this works for you?

Hi Chris,

This explains it.

You need to define as "geometry(WKBTYPE,srid)", e.g. "geometry(POLYGON,21781)"
for QGIS. FME has an option to do that. I just don't have at hand. I could send
you instructions on Monday, if you want.

Hi Andreas

Yes it does exist in the geometry column view but the type is listed as
GEOMETRY.

This table is being created from a non-spatial SQL Server table, and we use a
vertex creator transformer in FME to create the spatial table – we cannot seem
to explicitly specify the geometry that the spatial table should be as it is
not a spatial layer when imported?

Hi Chris,

That's true - starting from Postgis 2.0, geometry_columns is a view in the
public schema.

Did you check if that view exists and if the view contains an entry for your
spatial table?

Also make sure, when importing from FME, that you restrict your geometry type
to either POINT, POLYGON, LINESTRING, COMPOUNDCURVE or the MULTI versions. QGIS
likes a single geometry type per table, while Postgis would permit to store
mixed geometry types in the same geometry column.

Maybe you did not specify this geometry type restriction when importing your
data with FME.

says 'There is no entry in geometry_columns!'.

On asking another user they mentioned that the geometry columns table was
removed in PostGIS 2.0, so my question is, is this a known issue / bug within
QGIS, or is it the way in which I am storing my data? Just wondering if this
will be looked at in future QGIS versions.

Thanks, Chris

Hi Andreas

This doesn’t seem to be an option for me – perhaps this is on a different
version? I am using FME Professional Edition 2015.1.3.1. Below is what I see…

Hi Chris,

That's true - starting from Postgis 2.0, geometry_columns is a view in the
public schema.

2016-02-08 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
May I suggest you all file a bug reports if it has not been done.
This is indeed the third problem reported.  The first seemed related to
deleting shapefile geometries (a known problem caused by the fact that the
released file description by ESRI does not explain how to delete geometries,
the second was most likely cause by a wrongly selected snapping  option
and now this this.
General  recommendations vary from updating QGIS to the latest version,
disabling third party plugins that may cause memory leaks and do things like
slowing down saving file for simple modification (as reported here), to saving
shapefile regularly under different names (which should be done all the time
along with backups of the original data before it is modified) and finally, to
use a more modern file format like spatialite.   Spatialite format is
open and apparently very effective.   Shapefile, being an old
proprietary format  should be used only for last resort file sharing. That
being said, I use it all the time.  Call it a bad habit! :)

Re: [Qgis-user] Open attribute table in form view by default

2016-02-08 Thread DelazJ
Hi,
Andreas, I understand your point and agreed with you now that it's clear
you know Stefan.

But like Richard, I also get uncomfortable with such an assertion.
I've already been told such a thing (twice actually). Though my company
doesn't (can't?) finance any improvement in QGIS, I already spend time on
bug reporting and doc writing. And when you're then told because you are
asking for a bug fixing, "if you want it done just pay it", it sounds like
any other contribution you might have done has no real value.
Though I agree developers need money to improve QGIS, we should also better
value time spent by volunteers.

Re: [Qgis-user] change (Night mapping) theme settings

2016-02-08 Thread G. Garibaldi
A black theme is very desirable. I've been wanting one for years. He is
correct, when the background is black the text is only readable by
highlighting it with the mouse. Please fix.

With a black screen background it is comfortable to work with very few
lights on in the workspace helping to save on the electric bill.

hi Pierre,

if modifying a vertex takes that long I suggest you unload all(!)
plugins, some are known to slow down QGIS. Try if that enhances speed.
If yes reload you plugins one after another and see if you can identify

Re: [Qgis-user] Open attribute table in form view by default

2016-02-08 Thread Neumann, Andreas

Hi Richard,

There 1300! open feature requests in our bug queue. These features don't
get implemented by accident or on a voluntary basis (maybe some do). We
have to be realistic. If we want to have good progress, we better start
sponsoring features!

I am not asking a poor guy from a development country to privately
invest into QGIS, but a government organization from one of the richest
countries in the world. I also happen to work for a gov agency (on
province level in Switzerland). I know that these organizations have
enough money to invest into such software - they also pay
thousands/millions of Euros in licensing fees for proprietary software.
And by using OpenSource software they save a lot and gain flexibility -
and they can influence how the software they use gets developed. I
personally think, these organizations even have an obligation to give
something back to the OpenSource software they use!

Don't you think that it is quite ok to politely ask such organizations
to contribute a little bit financially for features they have an
interest in? If there are many such organizations contributing together,
we all profit from each other - and the ones who cannot afford to
contribute can still use it as well. I have no problem with that.

How do you think other OpenSource gets developed? Linux, LibreOffice,
Firefox, Apache, Postgres, Postgis, etc, etc. - do you think this all
happens solely from voluntary contributors?

Already in 2010 75% of the contributions in the Linux kernel were
contributed by paid developers:
http://apcmag.com/linux-now-75-corporate.htm/ I think it is safe to
assume that this figure is even higher in 2015. Do you think all of
these paid devs and the organizations who sponsor them are evil?

Hello all,

today I was working on a shape dataset and I had to delete some features. Later
I opened the shapefile in ArcMap by chance and I found that the features were
not deleted. They still did exist. I repeated the process – and got the same
result. Then, searching the internet, I found this incredible post:
https://hub.qgis.org/issues/11007

It is a well known problem (for 1,5 years!!) that QGIS is not able to delete
shapes in a reliable way!! I was horrified to read this because it is the same
as if a Word processor would not be able to delete a letter from a text. I
cannot understand why the QGIS developers haven’t fix that yet. If QGIS really
wants to compete with ArcMap, they should fix it as soon as possible. At least,
the according menu entries or buttons should be inactivated if they don’t bring
out reliable results.

My questions are:

* is this information still up to date? I can‘t read all of the 80
answers to the post now to get in-depth information ...

* does anybody have information about how they are planning to handle
this problem at the development team?

* is there a workaround for this? Do the GRASS vector tools bring out
reliable results?

* are there more of those software errors in QGIS that might lead to
huge problems in working on vector data and sharing them with others? If so, is
there a „black list“ of things one is never allowed to use in QGIS if you don’t
want to destroy your datasets?

Re: [Qgis-user] Open attribute table in form view by default

2016-02-08 Thread Andreas Neumann

Hi Stefan,

I think it would be a useful setting to have "per layer".

The QEP you mention is primarily about making the fields settings tab
easier to use / splitting it up in two separate tabs. Perhaps it would
be more useful to open a feature request for that (if none exists so
far) than adding it to the QEP - which seems to deal with different issues.

If this important to you - please consider sponsoring a dev to implement
this. It can't be very complicated to implement.

For the next QGIS release we will also contract with Matthias to do
several enhancements to transactions/relations, forms and widgets. I can
send you more details if you are interested.

Hi Stefan,

I don't know such a setting. And no - you did not overlook it.

The only tool that opens the form view by default is the identify tool
- if the checkbox is enabled that opens the form if there only one
target. But then you can't easily switch to the table view.$

Exactly.

Sure it would. But that will happen with the next point release anyway (every
month) and meanwhile there are also the nightlies.

That's wrong. qgis-rel-dev contains the plugins. No need to install the
plugins separately.

Correct. There should be a stable version that will be around for a while.

Another option is to switch to the standalone. There you get a snapshot of a
working setup (unless grass gets updated in osgeo4w after the qgis packages are
uploaded, but before the standalone installer could be made).

Yes, just as the daily builds of GRASS.

Re: [Qgis-user] Open attribute table in form view by default

2016-02-08 Thread Blumentrath, Stefan
Hi Andreas,

Thanks for your answer!

My use case is using QGIS as DB frontend where also non-spatial layers have to
be edited and editing does not necessarily start with a geometry...
Would you consider having such a setting a relevant enhancement? If so, should
I open an enhancement ticket or add a comment to Matthias`s “Fields and Forms
redesign”: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/issues/37

Cheers

Hi Stefan,

I don't know such a setting. And no - you did not overlook it.

The only tool that opens the form view by default is the identify tool - if the
checkbox is enabled that opens the form if there only one target. But then you
can't easily switch to the table view.$

Re: [Qgis-user] Create rectangle with minLat,maxLat,minLon,maxLon

2016-02-08 Thread gam17

Hi,
you can use a plugin called QAD (https://github.com/geosim/QAD).
code repository is here:
https://github.com/geosim/QAD

download zip from here:
https://github.com/geosim/QAD/archive/master.zip then unzip in
/.qgis2/python/plugins then remove the "-master" suffix
(otherwise you'll have python invalid syntax during loading plugin
module) and restart QGIS.

The current coordinate system must be a projected system if you want QAD
commands to work.
You can draw a rectangle specifing the coordinates in any coordinate
system (look at the QAD documentation,
section "Coordinate specified in a coordinate reference system different
from the current one").
Type "rectangle" command (english version) in the text window or use
toolbar or menu (vector->QAD).

Hi,
I have a very basic question, but could not find an answer. How do I
create a rectangle based on minLat, minLon, maxLat, maxLon? I have a
table with 100,000+ rectangle bounds.

Re: [Qgis-user] ARCGIS Geodatabase import

2016-02-08 Thread Piotr Kania

Hi,

If your layers have long field attribute's names and you would like to
have it in qgis the easiest would be export your .gdb file to spatialite
format
(http://www.northrivergeographic.com/archives/spatialite-arcgis-qgis),
then you could open spatialite in qgis and use it or export to postgis.
Sometimes sth goes wrong and there are some geometry errors, that's why
if I were you I would just export all layers from .gdb to shapefiles and
then export to postgis - don't edit shapefiles in qgis, it's safer to
edit vector layers as a postgis or spatialite - if you need to stick
with qgis all the time. In shapefile all long attribute's names are
truncated, so you will have to rebuild in postgis or spatialite.

Is there a way of importing this into a QGIS project?
