[Qgis-user] Map canvas and composer - depicting labels for exclaves

2021-09-07 Thread Andrea Giudiceandrea

Jaisen Nedumpala Tue, 07 Sep 2021 14:10:18 -0700

When composing a map with all these, the labels for
those entities display only in one part. I couldn't find a method to
display the same label in all the non-conterminous parts. Is there a way in
QGIS to depict them correctly, other than manually editing the composed map
outside QGIS?

Hi Jaisen,
if your features are multi-part features and you need to label each part
of the features, then you could use the option "Label every part of a
multi-part features".
See
https://docs.qgis.org/3.16/en/docs/user_manual/style_library/label_settings.html#feature-options

Best regards.

Re: [Qgis-user] .qpj files

2021-09-07 Thread Nicolas Cadieux

Hi,

When you currently save a shape file (.shp), that will also save .cpg,
.dbf, .prj, .qmd, .shx. files also.  The minimum number of extension is
3.  If you drag and drop all of them in the map canvas, you will get an
error for each file that is not a .shp. This is normal.  Only the .shp
should be opened in QGIS but the rest must be kept if you want to open
the .shp file. If you delete the .dbf file for example, you will delete
the database (not good!).

The .csv is a text file.  You should open that with using the delimited
text file importer (the comma in the Manage Layer toolbar).  That file
is possibly joined to a field in the shapefile via Layer properties,
joins.  You can open that one with any plain text reading program like
notepad. or notepad++.

Like Nyall says, some are no longer needed (the projection file format
had some work around) but I would keep them all just in case. The
shapefile format is very old.  Any version of QGIS can open one but
select the .shp.

They aren't needed anymore. They were an old workaround around getting
QGIS to correctly identify the projection of the shapefiles, but all
that logic is moved to the PROJ library and these files are no longer
required.

Re: [Qgis-user] GISBASE environment variable contains the wrong value

2021-09-07 Thread Rick Rupp
Thank you Charles. The system variable was correct, but wasn’t being updated in
qgis-bin.env. I edited the file with the correct value and all is well. I found
an alternative workaround also. On the System tab of the QGIS Options dialog I
could enter a value for the GISBASE variable that would override the incorrect
value.

I imagine a few things could be happening here. One way to test if the "system"
environment variable is set correctly is to use cmd to run echo %GISBASE% and
see where the default path is pointing to. If it is pointing to the correct
path then likely the variable is being overwritten by the QGIS bootstrapping
configuration. Have a look in the C:\OSGeo4W\bin\qgis-bin.env or
C:\OSGeo4W\bin\qgis-dev-bin.env files to see if the references are correct.
Otherwise maybe try a new user profile.

was pointing to the old location. I corrected this, rebooted, but QGIS still
reports the old location on the System Options dialog. All the other OSGeo4W
paths are correct. Is there another location from where the GISBASE variable is
read?

My work around is to just use GRASS for the needed functions, as the standalone
program runs fine. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Correct. They are a direct equivalent of QLYR/QML files in QGIS land.

A lpk is actually just a 7zip file renamed with a different extension.
If you open the lpk in 7zip you'll see a .lyr file with the styling
information together with a .gdb dataset containing the actual layer
data. The .gdb will open fine in QGIS, but you'd need the licensed
SLYR plugin in order to get the original .lyr styling to apply.

[Qgis-user] Map canvas and composer - depicting labels for exclaves

2021-09-07 Thread Jaisen Nedumpala
Hai,
I was composing a map with shapefile layers of several political entities
in a district, over here. In one layer, there are 12 similar entities,
among which, two of them have exclaves. Precisely, one entity has three
physically non-conterminous parts, and one has two physically
non-conterminous parts.

My problem comes here. When composing a map with all these, the labels for
those entities display only in one part. I couldn't find a method to
display the same label in all the non-conterminous parts. Is there a way in
QGIS to depict them correctly, other than manually editing the composed map
outside QGIS?

Help me.

While there may be issues with WMS layers (I don't use them often
enough to have noticed), it's certainly not true in general that
doubling the magnification is the same as halving the scale. In
particular, create a simple map with a layer with labels on. If you
halve the scale, the text on your screen remains the same size as
before. If you double the magnification, the text is twice is big on
your screen. Same goes for many aspects of symbology.

[Qgis-user] Problem with scale/magnifier

2021-09-07 Thread Stewart Holt
The Magnifier control on the main canvas status bar does not seem to
magnify, but rather changes the effective scale causing a fetch of the WMS
layer. This is a problem when this exceeds the servers maximum scale.
Setting the scale at X and the magnifier at 200% behaves identically to the
scale at X/2 and magnifier at 100%. When I adjust the magnifier, I see the
blue progress bar associated with fetching tiles. Ideally the magnifier
would allow you to magnify with pixelation, to get some separation of
features while seeing a degraded background map image. The lock seems to
only disable manually changing the scale but does not keep the WMS layer
from being fetched at a magnified scale which can result in failure and a
blank background. The documentation indicates that the lock should allow
magnification without changing scale. This seems to not be the case on USGS
WMS/WMTS layers. Has anyone else experienced this or understand what may be
causing it?

I am using Windows 10 and QGIS 3.18.3. I have seen this behavior since
version 2.

Thanks,

Stewart

Re: [Qgis-user] Convert LYR 2 SHP

2021-09-07 Thread Charles Dixon-Paver
To my knowledge, lyr files are definitions for data sources, styles, and
other layer configuration information. They do not contain any actual data
unless forming part of a layer package (lpk). The shp or shape file is the
actual underlying data so there is no way to convert or extract it from a
lyr.

If you have a layer package you want to convert or extract data from, I'm
not actually sure of what FOSS tooling supports it at all. North Road offer
the slyr tools, but I see on the website that lpk support was planned, so
I'm not sure whether or not it has been implemented at this time
