I tried to download the latest version and got the message: This is a
documentation error, please report back to QGIS devs. There was no link with
it. I have a screen shot. Can someone please send me a link to the devs,

[Qgis-user] counting fish

2017-02-06 Thread Jake Maier

Is there an easy way, even an existing plugin, to identify photos which show
an object (fish) swimming over a white board.

I live on a river and there is a potential problem with alewives, an
extremely important fish in the food chain. I'd like to find a way with a
wildlife camera to take a photo at regular intervals over 3 week. The more
photos I can handle (possibly thousands) the more accurate my count.

I was hoping to find an automated way to identify those photos which show an
object on the whitish background. I thought it should be possible to just
look at the average gray value of the photo.

Is there a fairly easy way to do this?

Thanks for any help.

[Qgis-user] plugin error

2016-03-07 Thread Jake Maier
I got the following message Plugin MetaSearch: The plugin will be disabled
because it crashed QGIS during last startup. Please report an issue and
re-enable the plugin when the problem has been solved. I use the 2.14.

Googling it did not result in a solution. Should I report it as a bug or is
it know already?

Thanks

Hallo Werner
Danke für den Volltreffer in´s blaue.
Thanks for the perfect shot into the blue. I thought it would work like in
other occasions, where if snapping is enabled but nothing to snap into is
around that it just uses the pointer location.

A guess into the blue - did you probably set some snapping options?

[Qgis-user] advanced digitizing panel

2016-03-01 Thread Jake Maier
It's driving me nuts. Seems to be so straight forward and I don't get it.

The advanced digitizing panel tool seems to work sometimes as expected, and
at times I cannot draw the actual leg of a line or polygon.

When I enter angle and distance, the tool draws the rubber band all right
but when I click the endpoint it does not draw the actual polygon. Sometimes
it will but most of the time it does not add the segment to the feature.

There are not so many things to adjust on the tool, but I can't figure out
what I do wrong or misunderstand.

Can someone please put me on the right track

Thanks

2015-09-09 Thread Jake Maier
Hi Bernhard.
Thanks for staying with me on this problem.
I'm not sure I know what you mean. But I think there may be a problem
accessing it.
I looked at those plugins and try to find and load them in qgis but All in
plugins shows only the installed plugins not any of the plugins from the
repository.
This may be a hint that qgis cannot access the internet.
Any ideas how to dig deeper?
Thanks

Hi Jake,

You did not provide info about which service url you were using.

With Pisa normally my wms's are still working fine.

I googled a mapserver url from maine.gov

http://mapserver.maine.gov/wms/mapserv.exe?MAP=c:/wms/basemap.map

and that one worked fine with me here

2015-09-08 Thread Jake Maier
I did have some computer issues and cleaned out a lot of malware which I got
by not watching what was added to a download. And I took that opportunity to
switch my c:drive to a ssd (which is noticeable faster in all windows
operations) using the system image for the transfer without having to
reinstall everything again. It seems to work fine except the server
downloads.

Hi Jake,

I had no problems in requesting a GetCapabilities in my browser
http://mapserver.maine.gov/wms/mapserv.exe?MAP=c:/wms/basemap.map=WM
S=GetCapabilities=1.3.0

What happens if you use that URL in your browser? Do you get a capabilities
document or not?
I doubt that this is a QGIS problem. Are you behind a proxy? If yes you have
to tell QGIS in Settings - network.

[Qgis-user] wms call responds with error

2015-09-07 Thread Jake Maier
A few years ago, I set up a few wms servers from the Maine GIS office to
download Maine airphotos. This always worked without problem but all of a
sudden I get the following error

WMS Provider

Failed to download capabilities:

Download of capabilities failed: Host mapserver.maine.gov not found.

Mapserver.maine.gov is up and when I go to edit link the http:// is also
there (other than in the error message)

All the wms links do not work anymore including the non-maine.gov sites.

I now updated to Pisa and it is still giving the same error message.

Anyone knows what's going on?

Thanks for any help

Hi,

In latest releases of QGIS, there is a button in menu Settings OptionsSystem
QSettings Reset that might reset your GUI to its default status. Try it
before removing anything.

2014-12-16 2:05 GMT+01:00 Nicolas Cadieux nicolas.cadi...@archeotec.ca:

Hi,

Windows key + up arrow could help or turn QGIS on an off. You could also turn
off the toolbar (right click in empty area of the toolbars and you should see a
menu).

If your GUI is really messed up, you could remove the registry keys for QGIS.
This will reset QGIS to the defaults. Look on the net and you will find how to
do that.

Hi,
You should look for the .prj that should be with the .shp. If it's not there,
your file was probably imported using the project CRS and that explains why
it's in the wrong place... If the .prj is there, but not recongized in QGIS,
it should have been imported as a User CRS.

If you can't find it, or if it's wrong, google EPSG and proj4. You should find
what you are looking for and then you can create a user CRS in QGIS.

Hi,

Specify a tile size like 300x300 in the wms setting. In your network
option(Setting\options\network), you are able to increase the size of the
cashe. I know the first option works, the second option not sure but I do it
anyway...

Use cache to speed up in the rendering options.(setting\option\rendering).

Also, I usually have 2 wms layers at once. One with more layers (Slow), and
one with only one layer like the road or water (fast). I keep only the second
one on. When I am where I want to be, I turn on the first, more complex layer.

Not confirmed. Zoom to Selection (Ctrl+J) adjusts the visible range so that
all selected features on the current layer are visible together.

It doesn't work for multiple layers at once, maybe this is what you expect?

I remember encountering this a long time ago and am fairly sure I reported
it or there was already a ticket. I've just re-tested and can confirm the
behaviour hasn't been fixed in 2.6 either. L

Unfortunately I can't seem to find it again (I don't have access to my

failing me).

Might be worth taking a look yourself, and if you can't find it, just report

Thank you for your response, Ramon
I use a soilmart (government site) to download the soil polygons and the
database data. soilmart is organized by county. In one county it works while
in the other it does not work. I can see the join field in the style sheet
in both counties. I can set it up in layer's properties exactly the same and
it all looks identical until I apply the settings. Then one county displays
the layer properly, in the other not at all.
Again thank you for your kind response.
Jake

Hi Jake,

Could you check the field that the style apples to?
(Because it sounds a lot like when I apply my saved style that works on the
Au_ppb field to a layer with an Auppb field)

Also, is the field you're classifying is in the joined table?

Did the join work as expected?

And, is this in QGIS 2.4?

[Qgis-user] misaligned openlayer corrects itself when panned

2014-04-06 Thread Jake Maier
Hi,

I have an issue with openlayer for quite some time meaning it was already
in previous versions. I use now 2.2 master.

When I open a Google image the first time, I see my layers correctly, but
underneath are 6 or so maps of the total earth in a row

I only need to pan a tiny bit and it will start correcting itself. Sometime
it will be ok with the first pan (or zoom) and sometimes it will be off
maybe 100 meters of so.

A second pan will straighten everything out. I googled the problem and found
one related but still different problem with Openlayers.

Any ideas what's wrong, and what I should do? (Ticket?)

Hi Jake,

from what I understand the file.qgs~ is a backup of your original file.qgs.
I think you can still rescue your project by using the file.qgs~ Just rename
it to your original file.qgs

Hope that works out.

Yes, I will go back to 2.2 because that’s an important feature for me which I

Now should I do anything else short of writing the plug-in myself. Don’t have

Hi!

I think the same thing applies as for every plugin right now ..

If you are using master you should be aware that a lot of changes already went
into master (like multi-threaded-rendering) and some things changed so that
plugins must be adopted to follow this changes ..

As 2.3 is the master thing will not happen urgent .. You are on the
development branch ..

If you need plugins to work you should currently go back to 2.2 and look from
time to time if plugins are already changed. (Or go change the plugin yourself
and make a pull request)

In your case have you tried contacting the author of the plugin?

kind regards

Werner

Werner

In my experience it sometimes works ok and then again it misbehaves. The
misbehaving is not consistent either, meaning is misaligns in different
ways. Bing satellite I just checked also misbehaves and I get the total

2014-02-13 Thread Jake Maier
Paolo and Bernhard
I think you may be onto something here. I have a fairly good general idea
about the projection issues, but don't have a firm grasp on the specifics. I
try always to keep everything in nad83 UTM zone 19, have on the fly enabled,
and then hope for the best. Now once in a while I had problems with wms
files from MEGIS, the GIS of Maine, in the past too, I'm not sure anymore
about the specifics, but lately everything went fine downloading and using
wms files, except once in a while the problem with the jumping points within
polygons. So far I could get it to behave again, by playing around with it a
bit. But now this time (I think since 2.1) it will only misbehave and so far
I could not find the problem nor could I get it to behave a single time.
Thanks again very much for your help and pointers.

I've seen this happen as well. I think it happens both on Windows and

rendering and thus the user can end up with layers which are

If someone can confirm this in master, we should open a ticket.

Closed as invalid.

I've got fresh installs of QGIS with this same rendering issue. I think this
ticket needs to be re-opened.

Note 10 in that ticket (http://hub.qgis.org/issues/8231#note-10) describes:

The problem only occurs when the Improved Polygon Capturing plug-in is
enabled in the 32-bit version and there are PostGIS layers in the document - a
fairly unique situation, which explains why it wasn't occurring for you. We
will simply disable this plugin when not being used, and your help
troubleshooting is much appreciated. Hopefully this plugin can be fixed by its
creator so other users don't have the same issue. Thanks again!

Person A is linked to New York City, Person B is linked to New York City,
therefore Person A is linked to Person B.

Yes, however Person A and B also have 50 other locations that need to be
checked against each other. The data might say NY, NYC, or NY City or New
York, NY and other variations, geocoding allows for the different ways a
locations is represented I do not want to rely on how others spell their
locations and I need to share them on a map.

Isn't that relatively easy to fix by creating a new field, and assigning the
correct attribute by location, namely nyc or whatever name you choose?

Wouldn't that make things much easier

data which consists of surnames and locations. I don't want to include the
questions about DNA as that is another matter and once I can find answers to
this question I can probably answer that one myself.

What is a record in you data?

A record consists of one person with multiple geographical locations and
surnames who need to find a common location(s)/surname(s) with other people
who also have multiple geographical locations and surnames (some small
groups of people are linked to each other as well). There is never just one
surname and/or location per person

This seems to be outside the standard GIS model where an entity has one
location (really one geometry) and a fixed number of clearly defined
attribute columns. Your entities have a variable number of locations, and
perhaps a variable number of attribute columns (the surnames) as well.
Possibly this has some similarity to an animal tracking model, where each
animal has multiple timepoints, and you might ask where two animals crossed
paths. But I am not very familiar with this field and don't know how easy it
would be to implement in QGIS or any other tool.

What location data do you have per person?

Each person's location numbers are varied, from four minimum to close to a
hundred

At a guess, this is something that can be done without any spatial data,
i.e.

Geocoding will work best as it does not rely on spellings with are too
varied

Person A is linked to New York City, Person B is linked to New York City,
therefore Person A is linked to Person B.

Yes, however Person A and B also have 50 other locations that need to be
checked against each other. The data might say NY, NYC, or NY City or New
York, NY and other variations, geocoding allows for the different ways a
locations is represented I do not want to rely on how others spell their
locations and I need to share them on a map.

Initially the people are linked to each other on one or more chromosomes, I
can sort that in Excel. There might be another type of programs that can
handle my questions however I do not know of any names, then I can transfer
the results into QGIS.

This is something I would tend to do in pure SQL.

I do not know much about programming, beyond what someone directs me to do
and was hoping the query functions of QGIS would handle what I was asking,
if this were a one to one comparison I could do it in Excel or a database
program, ultimately I need to put the information on a map

Thank you so much for responding, I don't know of a beginners list to ask
these questions. As I write this perhaps I can geocode and let Excel query
the latitude and longitude for my matches.

Possibly the geocoder outputs some other identifying field like a
standardized name, code, or some unique ID. In which case you could search
for matches on that field, rather than lat-long.

One thing that might make this easier is to think of a
person_ancestry_locations table with a person ID and a location
(standardized name or code) field, where each person has one record for each
location they are associated with.

But I can't think of a way to do this in QGIS that isn't incredibly
contorted. I would probably just use QGIS for the final mapping of common
locations.

[Qgis-user] disappearing shape layer

2013-11-05 Thread Jake Maier
Actually the layer itself is not disappearing. It just will not display.

I open the attribute table, there is a 125 acre polygon

I select zoom to layer and it displays the right area

I turn it on and off and on again several times it will not display a
polygon

I look into the properties/style and everything look OK (as far as I know,
that is)

I don't know how I can get the layer to display again

Does anybody have an idea?

On a related item, when I turn on a layer, it often will only display a
check on the layer but will not display the layer. After I turn the layer
off and on again, it will normally display.

Thanks for any help

Hi Jake,

I had a plugin in preparation that amongst others does exactly what you
want: within an editing session cut out from polygons in editable theme with
selected polygons from another theme.
The plugin is called DigitizingTools and is planned to contain more tools in
the future. I uploaded it to the plugin repository just now, feel free to
give it a try and report any problems.
It is marked as experimental (because it is not well tested right now) and
only works with current master (aka QGIS 2).

related to that file.

Probably the region outline from GRASS. On the GRASS toolbar there's a

Would TauDEM be helpful to show consequences of a dam removal project at the

Subject: RE: QGIS crashes?

Some are files I created and some are from others. I can be editing
shapefile and it will crash, sometime but not always when saving.

Here is a more bizarre example:

Yesterday I went to add a polygon to an to an existing shapefile that I had
worked on before. The add polygon process looked fine, it shows up in the
attribute table, the calculated acreage is 0.004 acres when it should be 1.4
acres, and all the areas of the other polygons are OK. When I click zoom to
selected rows from the attribute table it zooms to the entire polygon, but
when I click the polygon on the map with the Information button there is
nothing there. Then or any time in this process it may crash. This is on
a map with some photos as base and a few other layers. So, I tried an
experiment and opened a new QGIS project, opened the shapefile and was able
to add a polygon with no problem. Then I closed the new project, opened the
old project, and was able to open the edited polygon and update the
properties, etc.

With another project with some of the same layers I tried to make a new
shapefile layer and went through all the steps, the layer was created, (all
the basic files are visible in Explorer) but I could not actually create a
polygon that was visible. So, I went to the simple new project (no
rasters) described in the prior paragraph and was able to create a new layer
and create the polygon I wanted. Saved that, then I could open it and see
it with the old project.

These issues seem to be getting more frequent. Even when I am able to create
shapefiles and edit polygons I may get one to several crashes in a session.

transformation types puts the image at its specific location

I did use the feature to select the coordinates from the map canvas and in

map canvas.

What am I doing wrong?

This might of happened: If one of your shapefiles contained lines and you
accidentally selected a line with the info tool it would stay displayed even
after you turn that layer off. You have to turn off the info box and select
a different tool for the line to go away. That's why it went away when you
exited the program.

Re: [Qgis-user] entering distance and bearing for polygon or polyline

 Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2012 6:26 PM

Subject: Re: [Qgis-user] entering distance and bearing for polygon or
 polyline

 welcome to the show ;)

actually i had a similar problem a few days ago, and i can tell you, it
 was no fun.
I didn't find any native solution.

My use case (though i do not know yours):
I had to draw new transect lines, i knew the starting coordinate, the
distance (50m always) and the bearing.
In addition to that, I had to draw 2*2 m polygons, each 10 meters of
this line, starting at 5 m.

So, there is the quite useful improved polygon capturing plugin which
 also handles polylines.
With this, you can set a fixed length for the drawing of a line segment
 or polygon side.

BUT, unfortunately it won't show the current bearing while drawing, nor
can you set it (I already humbly asked the creator to maybe add this
 feature if possible).

So, option #1 is to take a transparent triangle like you use in school,
hold it to the screen and draw your lines (ughh).
Option #2 is a lot of work, but more accurate:

I entered my starting coordinates (x,y), bearing (alpha) and distance
 in excel and used sin(or cos)(radians(alpha))*distance + x(or y)
(sorry, I do mix up sin and cos all the time, so better check yourself)
 to retrieve my end coordinates.
Then i copied the calculated coordinates in separate rows like x,y
 x1,y1
 x2,y2
 x1,y1
 x2,y2
 etc.

Then, i added an id column, to indicate which point pairs should form
 the line id,x,y
 1,x1,y1
 1,x2,y2
 2,x1,y1
 2,x2,y2
 etc.

Then, I imported this table as csv with the help of the mmqgis plugin -
Transfer - Geometry Import from CSV File

 Lines were done.

 Polygons were designed this way:
Transect Lines: Vector - Geometry Tools - Densify Geometry - Factor
 9 = a new vertex every 5 meters

With Cad Tools plugin, i created a parallel line to my transect line,
 distance 2 m.

Densify Geometry with factor 24 to get 2m-segments on this line.

Snapping options the transect layer set to segment and vertex and for
 the Cad Line to vertex.
Starting to draw the polygon with the improved polygon capturing with
2 meters at 5m-vertex on the transect, snapping to the segment, then
snapping to the Cad Line vertex, right click on next vertex to finish
 the polygon.
and so on and so on and so on ...

Maybe there is an easier way for that, but i couldn't find it.

I hope sth of this may help you to find an idea for your problem.

 Greetz
 Bernd

The Azimuth and Distance plugin does the trick

[Qgis-user] managing emails

2012-06-19 Thread Jake Maier
Hi

Who can please help me to change my mailing preferences. I am going back to
Germany for a week and just want to receive a summary of the emails and not
all the individual emails. Possibly a summary once a week. Is that possible
and how would I go about it. Thanks for any help

Agreed: the approach (and infrastructure) we use for plugins could be
extended to print layout, styles, icons etc.
Anyone wants to help, by directly coding or supporting the work of a
 developer?
 Thanks.

Hi Jake

In the printcomposer you can save a template.

FileSave as template.

And to use the template

FileLoad template.

Kind regards

Re: [Qgis-user] default print template

2012-06-10 Thread Jake Maier
Thank you very much Christine. This is a nice template and I will take some
of the ideas, but my question actually was not so much the template itself
but the *default* template, because I don't want to each time I open the
composer to load the template, but it's not a problem really and I was just
wondering if it could be customized even more.
Again thanks

Have created a simple print composer template with the classical
elements (north arrow, scale bar, scale text, legend and frame). If you
like, you may use as a starting point for own customizations.

Of course no defaults can satisfy all users completely.

This, as well as personalized default styles, could be achieved if we
 could customize the default project.
Basically, one could save a project as the default, which would get
loaded every time a new project is created - instead of the global
 defaults.

 Makes sense?

Well, if you create a new QGIS project, in the print composer you
 have
only to load a template (*.qgt) once. It will be saved with the
project file (*.qgs). Actually you can load and save several
templates/map compositions in the map composer of a QGIS project. You
may also rename or delete them, if you like.

There will never be a template that will satisfy the needs of
 all/many
users. A good idea could be creating a collection of templates for
different purposes, so users might choose and download their

[JM] Yes Etienne, that's exactly what I had in mind.
Tell qgis that this template should be loaded as the default at the
beginning of each program start.
Is there a way to have a python file loaded and executed as a default each
time the program starts?
I don't know much about python yet, but want to learn more about it and I'm
sure it can be programmed to do exactly that.
