If you are planning to use Mapinfo TAB with QGIS you should be aware of possible slowness on Windows when files are opened over Windows network. Basically the same problem as described for shapefile: http://hub.qgis.org/issues/6448 Shortly, if OpLock is broken, OGR Mapinfo driver reads 512 bytes blocks and VSI cache does not help for some strange reason. Don't get frightened, we know about it and we are working on that problem. The problem should also be taken into consideration if OGR Mapinfo TAB driver is going to be improved/extended. It should use some buffered I/O, I am not sure if VSI cache is suitable enough to be used for buffered I/O, in any case it does not yet support writing. For the Who to talk with, try http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/GDAL-Dev-f3742093.html which is the GDAL developers list. What is your usage scenario ? For read-only work, QGIS is - function wise - a drop-in replacement for MapInfo. For read/write work, you might consider using a data format, for example Postgis/Postgresql, that can be edited by both MapInfo and QGIS. the French Ministry of Ecology is also interested. A fundamental point is to offer the opportunity to work directly with MapInfo files in QGIS. To do this would require an evolution of miTab driver. http://mitab.maptools.org/. in the meantime, work with postgis (or spatialite) as a pivot format is a good alternative, but can cause problems transcoding of data. Sponsoring that development within GDAL/OGR is a very good idea.
