Re: [Ql-Users] GST QC

2014-06-01 Thread Tobias Froeschle

Dilwyn,

the version I just pulled from your website unpacks fine, the compiler
shell ("COMPILE") doesn't work, however. On QPC, it will just open a
number of windows and sit there and do nothing. I have tried to
recompile the program from the included sources, that version works a
bit better, even gets halfway round to actually start the compiler, but
still crashes after some time.

The compiler, assembler, and linker themselves apparently work fine, so
working from the command line according to tha manual instead of the
shell seems to work.

Unfortunately, my time is up as I have to pack up to catch an early
plane tomorrow. Maybe I have a bit of time to look into it on the week-end.

BUT: C68 is a way better compiler than GST anyhow ;)

I'm a bit confused with the GST-QC package.
When I download it from the 'C and C68' directory, this version will
unzip, boot, show a nice shell environment...and won't work.

I use Q-emulator BTW. (and i'm having the same problem with Xchange)
In the Programming Language Section there is another version of
GST-QC. This won't even unzip, a problem with the directory

or something.
Maybe you know this quick and easy way to make it work?

Realistically without more information as to what he means by 'won't
work' is needed

Has he unzipped it in Windows or inside the QL for example - he should
have attached the zip file directly as a drive in q-emulator and then
extracted to a folder - I just tried the version here which is in the
Preservation Team's shared folder and that seems to work fine in
q-emulator (although I am not sure how to test it!)

Re: [Ql-Users] Which project to pursue

2014-06-01 Thread Dave Park
I've read everyone's replies, both public and private and I have thought on
them for a while.

If it's a non-QL project, I'll discontinue it and send on the info and
anything I have bought to someone who could take it over. In the case of
the ZX80 cover, I will mail it back to the original sender. Once that space
is cleared, I'll solely focus on the QL hardware I listed above. Having
room to move/breathe will be nice. Also, not spending money on those side
projects will get me back on track with the core projects.

You're right that Sandy isn't a profit-making enterprise. The company
exists only for structure/tax/export/liability reasons, but the plan is
very much to have a zero balance at the end of all the projects.

Re: [Ql-Users] Sandy Electronics change of focus?

2014-06-01 Thread Kenn Van Hauen
Dave,

As I wrote to you after your presentation at the Italian QL meeting, I am very
excited about your roadmap of products.

When I decided to dust off my QL 6 months ago after 25 years in the loft, it
was really difficult and very expensive to source the necessary add-ons for my
standard QL, for it to be of practical use in this age.

The fact that you are producing a new batch of Aurora cards, have the backplane
and embedded power supply available, and can provide Minerva is simply
excellent for someone in my position that needs to catch up.

As for your approach and rationale for SuperRAM -> UltimIDE -> UltraQ -> "QL2",
it is thoroughly ambitious but it is also very well thought through as to how
you are going to get there. In my humble opinion, this programme will
future-proof QL interest for many years to come.

If you have to make a priority decision then my vote would be to focus on the
products that takes us forward and enhances the appeal of the QL. With that in
mind, I think your grouping is about right and only you can decide where to
draw the line.

Kind regards,

Kenn

I've also updated the small library of basic modules.

Hear hear, Wolfgang. Agree 100%.

Although QPC2 is my "QL" of choice, I've all sorts of QL systems I can set
up when required - I hope one of them will eventually get a QL-SD plus some
of Dave's hardware when it becomes available.

Hi Dave,

I haven't comented on your question as to which project you should
pursue since I feel that I'm not really concerned.

I mostly use emulators nowadays, so new QL hardware that might be
produced is not really something that I have much interest in, other
than the general interest of a QL aficionado. SoI can't really comment
on the individual projects themselves, also because I don't really know
enough about them.

However, since the silence to your question here seems to be so

First and foremost, I presume that making money isn't your main
motivation in undertaking all of these projects, even if yours seems to
be a commercial enterprise. If making money is important, then go with
whatever promises the most return on your investment

If not, you might want to go for what either promises the highest fun
factor, or can be finished in the least time. That way, you will have a
finished product which might help recover some costs, and also something
to show to your customers.
