Re: [Ql-Users] bug in String handling

2024-01-12 Thread John Southern via Ql-Users
Could the reference be the SBASIC/SuperBASIC reference manual?

That says
When a string array is set up with DIM, each entry is set to a nul string
(“”). The zero’th element of each string array
contains the actual length of that string, for example:
DIM a$(10,10): a$(1)='Hello': PRINT a$(1,0)
will return the value 5, as will PRINT LEN(a$(1)).
If a$ is undimensioned and a$=’Hello World’, PRINT a$(0) does not generally
work and will result in an ‘Out of
Range’ error, except under SMS v2.60+ and Minerva where PRINT a$(0) is the
same as PRINT LEN(a$).

Hi Paul,

The original French made SAF 40LF220 3.0V battery is no longer made.
There is an equivalent at £23 at
https://www.allbatteries.co.uk/lithium-battery-3v-270mah-40lf220-equivalent-mgl0025.html
or you could ask
https://www.vlad.fr/en/various-professional/7883-battery-lithium-3v-270mah-industry-type-2840lf22029.html
https://www.laboiteapiles.com/produit/124/40lf220 claim to have some in

However I think what you are after is a CR2032 replacement in a holder.
Marcel mentioned a holder at

[Ql-Users] Errors with uQLx on Raspberry Pi

2012-05-24 Thread John Southern
Hi All,

Is anyone able to assit or at least start me off on a general direction.
I am trying to get the uQLx running on a slow (MK.all takes 160 seconds),
memory restricted Raspberry Pi with the Armel architecture.

Following Javier's instructions from a message sent 10:17 27/11/2009 I edited
the config file to the gcc version I was using and commented out the line in
unixstuff.c for RTOP. I used gcc 4.1.3 although 4.4 gives an identical error.
The install appears to run without throwing up errors although there are
plenty of warnings.

When I try to start the emulator, the outline of the QL screen briefly flashes
up on screen before I get the followinf error message

The Survey should of been proof read before being published.

That was all my fault.
When testing the survey I did spot that there should have been an indication
to which was Strongly Agree/Strongly disagree but I forgot to ask Keith to
change this.

The spellings and inconsistencies were also all my fault.

I did try to incorporate the suggestions that had been sent in when it was
initially planned, and each time we do this, hopefully we will get better.

I notice that Keith and Dan have now added a comment to which is Strongly
Agree on the scale and Dilwyn's suggestions on some of my spelling mistakes
have now been corrected.

The reason for the lack of collecting a name or email address was down to the
idea that the results should be available to all and I did not want any
possibility that someone could complain about lack of data protection if they
could be identified.

Any comments about the survey are welcomed as I would like to see it run much
more regularly so everyone can see how we are changing.

I suppose while I am writing I do have a question?
Has anyone produced a virtual machine containing an emulator that could be
moved from machine to machine, OS to OS?

Re: [Ql-Users] How was QUANTAs QLis25 event and AGM?

2009-04-19 Thread John Southern
Hi Urs,

Very good from my point of view. There was just under forty people on the
Saturday and I guess just less than thirty for the Saturday evening meal.

John and Stuart did eventually manage to find some Real Ale in the village.

The hotel was reasonable and the food edible (My room was large and I slept
very soundly so I could not complain).

Lunch on the Saturday saw most of the salad uneaten, while Sunday was the
opposite with the chips left uneaten.

As usual, the time just disappeared far too quickly and with Chis, I fixed
fewer machines that planned and spoke to fewer people than I intended,
although in hindsight we did fix many and chatted with lots.

Dilwyn produced an amazing display of information, equipment and bits and
pieces to give a full history of the QL.

Rich had masses of stuff for sale and produced two differing Samsung models of
the original QL. The SG13 model which I had never seen before had extra RF
suppression compared to other Samsung models.

The highlight as usual was the talks, although I missed some on Saturday
morning as I arrived late. I liked the Lear PCB CAD talk by Simon and Steve
Poole's talk on graphics went down very well.

Having overseas visitors made the show that little bit special, although I did
not recognise anyone from the London group. (Sorry if I missed you!).

The actual AGM had a good open discussion at the end, where some interesting
ideas came up and hopefully the group will carry them forward.

In response to a letter in the latest magazine calling for QL Today and Quanta
to be merged, a questionnaire was produced to gauge opinion and this should be
opened up to a wider audience so everyone's views can be gathered.

I now have a house full of QL bits once again, that I did not get around to
testing and so will be kept quiet for a few more months.

Talking to people at the shows is always interesting as it is the tiny
snippets of information of shared problems that lead on to other things.
Certainly, enough little projects to keep the sub-group I attend busy for the
next year.

The children enjoyed themselves by being able to write real programs on real
computers that worked and where they understood the actual code. To my shame I
had forgotten some of the commands, but they were helped by many who explained
various commands and functions easy enough for me to follow.

On display were different forms of desktop, laptop, netbook and QLs in various
guises from black boxes to Aurora systems.

I would certainly go again.

I also store a lot of second user items - see my new Retro Computing

Commercial items, and new items, should still be provided via Traders.

sale from as little as £1 - YES one GBPound. Would you be interested if I
could still lay my hands on a couple?

Out of the twenty dead original black box QLs that we took along to the AGM,
the sub group managed to get twelve working perfectly and another two just need
membranes and microdrives fitting. To be honest we ran out of time for the
microdrives, but the limiting factor in the future seems to be keyboard
membranes.

I know a few membranes are still available, but the price of original QLs have
fallen through the floor on eBay to the extent that it is not worth the price.
I will try to do something about this and hopefully reduce the cost in the
future for anyone trying to keep old machines in operation.

Boxed QLs still seem to find buyers, but I suspect these are collectors and not
anyone who is actually using them.

Without the ability to buy SGC and Aurora boards, I guess the market is limited
to an ever falling number of machines and the Emulator route. The community has
always split from time to time - Floppy/microdrive, TKII/no TKII, even colour
graphics on emulators vs none on Aurora. How this is solved, if possible I
leave to others.

While it was fun setting up QLs for my children and watching them play games,
the limiting factor was finding working cartridges. (We only repaired one
floppy disk unit at the end and had a ready supply of legal cartridges to try).

We had success with Deathstrike, Chess, Zkul, West (We used this one to test
all the other machines) but the others all failed. Admittedly, this will now
mean I will have to send some of the originals away to Rich Mellor to get
working copies on disk for them but at least they will get some fun out of
them. (What ever happened to Jochen's BrainSmasher, Diamonds and QShang? I
could not see them for sale anywhere)

OK so now to my questions.
Has anyone ever had any success with getting SMSQ/E working under uQLx?
Is ZMht available anywhere? I can find the demo but no mention of the full

Anyone an expert on Ghostscript. Have installed it on my Q60, and it
works very well, prints postscript files and text and graphics.
It comes with some utility scripts one of which gslp.ps allows the
printing of text files directly to the printer without conversion to
 postscript. This works well also.
My problem is that this script should also convert text files to
 postscript as a file.
When I try to do this according to the manual I get an error message
indicating that I have not passed it all the info it needs to do the
job yet it has been set up according to the manual. Has anyone used it
 or GS generally?

Try the following

gslp -ptest.ps test.txt

This uses the Ghostscript line printer to generate the postscript file called
test.ps from the test.txt file.

generates a postscript file.

Has this clause every been used?
Speaking for myself, I would happily vote to delete this clause to remove any

This is not in the constitution and I have no idea when and why it was
 approved.

As a matter of principle I have made a donation to Quanta equivalent to the
subscription. I wonder what other committee members have done,

Well, since you ask the question, I can confirm that I have paid my membership
for this year.

I came onto the committee last April (2004) and as such had already paid my
membership fee in January 2004. The usual practise has been for committee
members to then not pay a subscription while serving and to receive a free
subscription the year after they stand down to make up for the year when they
initially stand. As such I could then expect to get Jan 2005 to Dec 2005
subscription paid for by Quanta.
I have already paid Jan 2005-Dec 2005.

My reason for payment is a far more simple excuse. I also pay associate
membership fees giving an annual fee of £24. Rather than having to change
direct debit forms and Quanta receiving unusual amounts, I just continue to
pay my normal fee and the difference is treated by Quanta as a donation.
Nothing Machiavellian, I just cannot be bothered with the excess paperwork to
gain £14 pounds and I might then forget the following year.
I have in the past not paid on time and been late because I assumed that the
fees matched the magazine, running Feb to Jan, when in fact they run Jan to
Dec.

The constitution clearly states that committee members can award this free
membership.
When this first came into practise I do not know. Perhaps the previous
Treasurer, John Taylor, can remember, but I suspect it was before his time.

democratically (new clause 5.3), and the burn out has already happened?
Imagine if the Magazine Editor post had been done this way.
 4. Is anyone other than The Chairman of the meeting offering to
do proxy voting for me?

If you are not going to attend, can I request a proxy form soon? The final
date for receipt is Sunday.

I have received a few forms that indicate the form is not as clear as it could
be. This is where individuals have voted for BOTH John and Geoff as Chairman.
While this may be a novel solution, it is unfortunately an OR option.

Speaking (typing) as myself and not on behalf of the committee :-
1. Ask Geoff !
4. If no one else offers, as a last resort, I am happy to act as your proxy as
long as you direct me to which way you want to vote.

Try it. I wish you luck.

Whether BACC still exists is a bit of a mystery. It has no web details.
Browsing the web, I can find a reference to BACC on the Association of Acorn

2000.

In April 2003, the Sutton Library Computer club said that BACC was no longer
offering equipment cover. http://www.venus.co.uk/comms/slcc/

The Cheshunt Computer Club amended its online flyer in July 2004 to indicate
it was no longer affiliated to BACC

The Wakefield Acorn Computer (User) Group no longer appears to be in
existence.

The Oric User Group is no longer affiliated.
