Does anybody know, if the Xchange version for PC is free-, share or
elseware? And where to obtain it? I have googled a lot, but haven't found
anything.

Luckily, the excellent Psion Chess for PC is meanwhile freeware.

Cheers...Ralf R.

There was a Xchange for PC DOS world made, somewhere around here I have
the rather fancy box for that critter. I cna NOT remember if the
program was inside the box tho. Sorry!

Now, how do I format it? It doesn't appear in My Computer etc. -
normally you can right click on a drive name and get the context menu

It's almost as if it's not recognised because it's not formatted, but
of course that gives a catch 22 of not being able to format a new hard

it's not already formatted, so I guess I'm missing some simple course

Also tried from DOS command line, FORMAT D: just gives drive not

This new 250GB drive is to be the home for all my QL stuff, a full

 likes with the C:\ drive.)

didnt see anyone ask this, have you checked in the BIOS setup if the

On some PC's you need to get into the BIOS First, let it determine that
there is a HD present, then save settings
THEN Fdisk and most any other utility way of messing with the drive
should work.

MOST newly bought retail packeages HD's should be recognizable by

characters per page. At this rate the house will be buried in paper. Anyone know how to
force Windoze to stop???

Help! (Put Windoze on pause for now, but it will stop anything else printing
until I can clear it)

Ok, you're on the right track, as I understand the beast: this is
primarily what seems to be happening

1 You initate a print job
2 MOST all the printer control stuff is now handed off to winderze
3 makes for a cheaper printer, less work on the printer makers tech
   types
4 Widerze has to buffer the print job so that it can be passed to the
   printer at a workable speed,
5 SO it (the print job) gets placed in a temp file of some sort, maybe
even 2 diff places, the print spooler temp file and the SWAP file ??
6 anyway, once placed in a temp file situation, the DATA is still there
until the print spooler part of winderze is happy it did what it was
supposed to so: spit out paper from the printer.

the process suggested on that link is guiding folks to where the temp
files are hiding, just awaiting the all clear from the printspooler in
winderze

Now having taxed the brain too much I must take it out and retire off to
the spa (providing I can afford it in todays economy) and get off the
soapbox

I notice that Micro$oft have released something called Small Basic
(it's been around a while actually) which is a cousin to their QBasic
and the like, designed to go with the .net framework etc. But above all,
what got my attention was that it was designed to put the fun back into
programming.

It's been designed to be a simple to use second generation BASIC and
seems to be aimed at youngsters and people who just want to write quick
applications for their own use rather than being a development system
for commercial/free aps as such. There's info about it here and a
getting started guide which gives an idea of what it's about.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/cc950524.aspx

Is this some kind of admission that people are wanting to go back to
simpler, easier to learn programming systems like our S*Basic for example?

I sort of Don't think so, More I think it is a move to promote the .Net
program usage. MS lost the fight to control Java and has come up with
the .Net programming language to fill out their plan to be all, do all
within their auspices. MS has a multi-pronged marketing program in
place to foster the growth and usage of the .Net (crap), hoping to
supplant and replace java.

It is them just continuing the world domination plan they have been
following for a long time in the software world.

However, as soon as he plugged the Trump Card into the machine - it gets
through the chequer-board memory test - then comes up with a grey screen.

The PSU seemed under powered, so he has replaced the PSU and the Trump
Card + QL then started fine a couple of times.
However, having left the computer and Trump Card for a few days - he is
back to the same problem on start-up

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this may be - I wonder if it
could be the 68008 chip??

back in the days of yore, we used to 'cure' QL's with marginal power problems by
replacing the 2 ROM's with a CMOS EPROM, really dropped the milliamp draw of the
QL's power supply bits. Somewhere in the back of my mind it seems that it
reduced the total draw by up to 30%

SOMETHING in the world wide web is filtering mails (or throwing them
 away) without notifying the sender.

This is reproduceable in some cases, in other cases it is random.
My provider has no clue either, but in the reproduceable cases the
sending server refuses to connect to the receiving server.
Fact is: it is unreliable and it is related to j-m-s.com (my main account).
I would guess that due to the massive number of faked virus mails (I get the

Gentlemen

I should have written earlier but there you are! My impression is that
the track itself is in good order and that the same is true of the coach
bodies and seats. The tools for maintaining and erecting the track were
present. To my mind the only question marks are against the coach bogies
which must surely be due an overhaul (particularly if the coaches were to
be included in any sale) and the braking capacity of the train
(especially if hauled by a steam loco with no brakes of its own -
electric locos stop quite quickly when the power is cut).

Anyway thanks to you all for the work involved. If anyone is interested
on Tuesday we could try out Pop on the track.

Christopher

You do seem to enjoy sending rail-related messages to a Sinclair QL related
mailing list. It's causing much amusement.

My worry is that when you don't get the anticipated responses, you'll feel
ignored.

So where did you mean to send this?

Hi Paul,

The original French made SAF 40LF220 3.0V battery is no longer made.
There is an equivalent at ?23 at
https://www.allbatteries.co.uk/lithium-battery-3v-270mah-40lf220-equivalent-mgl0025.html
or you could ask
https://www.vlad.fr/en/various-professional/7883-battery-lithium-3v-270mah-industry-type-2840lf22029.html
https://www.laboiteapiles.com/produit/124/40lf220 claim to have some in
stock

However I think what you are after is a CR2032 replacement in a holder.
Marcel mentioned a holder at
https://www.kilgus.net/2018/05/22/ql-sd-ql-microsd-and-sgc-battery/
Dave on the QL Forum had https://qlforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1137 but I
think you are remembering

The Russian ones when back online were

Hey Don!

Welcome back and great to hear from you again.

The list has been pretty quiet lately.

And yes, many fond memories of QL show road trips to Rhode Island,
Tennessee, Boston and PA.

Not quite retired here yet, got a few more years to go but I still play
