I wear a pair of Addidas soft running shoes or a
pair of timberland loafers. fancy shoes on occasion.

try wearing LL Bean slippers. They look like
moccasins w/ sheepskin for awhile, maybe get a 1/2 size larger.

Your foot wasn't spasming in the
shoe??

Thanks, Ron.My daughters boyfriend is going to try to get
the old bearings out this weekend, If we can get them out i'm sure most bearings
the same size will work, I think quickie sells them for $10.50 each, but many
people said hardware stores like ACE or many bearing shops carry bearings that
will fit. I'll let you know if we can get them out..cause like you
said..some rust is involved.

[QUAD-L] Shoes vs Footwear

2005-11-04 Thread wheelchair
Footwear and shoes will vary among the sexes. You won't see me wearing high
heels, thank you. (lol)
For a few, footwear is not a major issue, but for many others, it has to be
just
right. Often, as the day wears on, so may the footwear due to foot swelling
or sweating. Hence, it really becomes an individual thang as to what to wear.
The tennis shoes become the easiest, but not necessarily the best.
Footwear that breathes is important and not too tight.

Re: [QUAD-L] SUPRAPUBIC HELP

2005-11-04 Thread Quietstream25322

 Hi , Paul... I have had a supra-pubic a bit over 5 years now.
The hole does not close and the Doctors told me the slight bleeding around it is
normal.. if the meaty tissue is excessive the Doctors have some product to dry
it up a bit, but told me that a bit of bleeding there is healthy and good so
they don't want it to all dry up. Each time I take a shower and at once a month
cath changes we put some triple antibiotic around the hole and take a square
piece of guaze and cut a slit in it so the cath tube can fit into the center,
then just tape it on there---this helps me to keep it clean and will catch any
blood or leakage from ever getting on your clothing.

good luck,
Dan

I've had the same thing happen while in a nursing home.
I wear a pair of these tennis shoes now and with the velcro straps it opens up the whole shoe so you know if your toe is bent.

[QUAD-L] Ray in PN Magazine

2005-11-04 Thread Lori Michaelson

Ok Ray ... I read my PN last night.

They always have hunting/outdoorsmen articles near the back. The one article had a photo with abt 20 rifleman practicing out in the open and a pic showed them all from a distance. Without names ... I thought you might be one of the 20 or so.

THEN I came across an article SPECIFICALLY abt a Ray D (forget your last name but I assumed it was you) who was an avid hunter prior to injury and then described how you enjoy it as best you can now. With a big GREAT photo of you!

But I'm a bit confused .. you said you were unaware of you being in the issue someone told you. My confusion lies with the fact that no magazine or book or whatever can legally write abt someone, include a photo, etc without the person's written consent. Or they're opening themselves up to a huge lawsuit. Either way ... it's just not done without the person's permission.

Don't you recall a PN editor, photographer, etc asking you to sign a release?

The whole article was abt you and, again, GREAT PHOTO! Cool beans for your passion of being an outdoorsman!

[QUAD-L] Shoes

2005-11-04 Thread Chet Smith

I've went to the best store for shoes, Wal-Mart and they are very reasonable
on there prices too. I bought me a set of Hiking Boots one half size bigger
than I wear and also "wide width" which is very important because of the
swelling of the feet during the day when your sitting in the what I call "The
PresidentsQuad Chair". I feel important but I am wise enough not to make
any decisions for thepeople of the U.S.A. . "Smiling" I got some Nike Tennis
Shoes that give me a red mark on my heal after two days of wearing them.
That ain't good, I got some of the other brand of tennis shoes that made my
heal do the same. So I done figured it out that, I can't wear tennis shoes longer
than two days. "LOL" So I hike around in my Quickie 646 wheelie chair. So,
this could have been a shorter e-mail but I had to drag it out and the only thing
I can suggest for shoes to wear is try some out after your foot heals and when
you find some that doesn't make your foot get sore, keepem. Those that give
give you aeven just a red markwithin 3 to 4days, return them and try another
pair. I would also have anyone putting on a lace type shoe, un-lace the shoe
atleast half way down before trying to put it on. Keep your toe nails trimmed off
which would be the very best of care also. It was Neglect on your Nurse not
to un-tie the laces down half way or check your toe nails for trimming that you
had to spend time in the Hospital. If she could offelt what she did to you, I
guarantee she or any other person would not dothat everagain. Good Luck
with the Healing and hope it all turns out back to normal for you.

[QUAD-L] Chair Tipping?

There are 2 worries I have.
One is when I start fast, it lifts the front wheels

computer.
But the other is when I stop fast, it seems to want
to tip forward. I can't tell what happens, it it feels like the back wheels lift
up. It might be just the motor area, but not sure.

One is when I start fast, it lifts the front
wheels off the ground. Fun when expecting it. I know that can be adjusted with
  the computer.
But the other is when I stop fast, it seems to
want to tip forward. I can't tell what happens, it it feels like the back
wheels lift up. It might be just the motor area, but not sure.
It's a Invacare TDX3. Anyone else have this
  trouble?

Re: [QUAD-L] Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

2005-11-04 Thread Joan Anglin

Brien Stocker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Joan, I was in valleymed from january through may (3.5 months in halo). Even as a c-7 with c-8 function, I highly endorse the halo's stabilizing benefits and regret that I was not haloed immediately after my 2 surgeries. To err on the side of caution for haloing people with cervical sci is well worth it. Wow, c-4 function is pretty diminished. I commend you on your apparent quality of life. I bet you have a tremendous realm of people around you. That is what I attribute to my happiness and continued ascension through life. A visit with Dr Shem at outpatient services: 408-885-4839, would REALLY help you. She is one of the finest P M R doctors under whose care I have been! What kinda puppy are you getting Stockton is big on pet bulls, rotties and other gangster empowering dogs, lol. How often do!
  you
folks on the list with SCI see a pmr doctor? I go twice a year, but my doc is awesome so I feel that I always benefit.haveaniceday,BrienHi BrienI have an appointment with Dr. Shem on the 29th of November. I had not been to see a physiatrist since leaving Valley MED February of 1971. As I did not have enough Social Security quarters to qualify for being disabled, I went for 10 years without any insurance. I only got on Social Security when I turned 65 -- boy was that a happy day for me! Luckily I have an excellent family medical doctor here who has tried to keep up with spinal cordinfo et cetera.

Luckily I do not have problems with spasms (just minor ones if I am uncomfortable or something is bothering me), UTI's -- I've only had four serious UTI's in 15 years --, andthe only medication I need is Fosamax for osteomyelitis and Levbid for intermittant cathing. Unfortunately for me, when I got my last new wheelchair in 1995, I got a serious decubitus ulcer from the chairs lack of padding on the lower part of the back of the chair. I went once or twice to the wound care specialists here but couldn't afford to keep on going at $350 a pop. So it took us for years to clear them out. I recently got another new chair, and the wounds came back but I was able to get into the wound clinic right away and we were able to clear them up quite quickly. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to another new chair L. O. L..

I have a great group of friends and family around me. However, my marriage of 24 years dissipated after I was in a wheelchair. I am very lucky to get personal care assistants through an agency that is affiliated with St. Mary's hospital here. We pay on a sliding scale, and I am eligible for five hours a day. Since I have nothing but shoulder shrugs it takes awhile to get me up in the morning, as they don't help me at all (the shoulder shrugs I mean). Once I'm in my chair, I do have things set up quite well. I use a mouthstick for the computer and the telephone, a mouthstick to read a book, and I just recently was given an environmental control system that is voice-activated from the state of Nevada. It was a used one, and so far we are ironing out its quirks, but I am hopeful that eventually it will help me so that I can open the door to go outside and come back inside, turn on and off the television and change channels, play music, and answer this awesome telephone tha!
 t they
gave me. However it does not work now. But I am very hopeful that we will eventually get this all so I will be more independent. My attendant usually leaves about 11 a.m., and I am by myself until three or so. I have another attendant who I pay privately that comes in and puts me to bed at about nine o'clock. I try not to use my family for my caregivers anymore than I absolutely have to. My youngest daughter lives very close, and I help her homeschool her two boys, which keeps me very busy staying ahead of the old one. So I am very busy, enjoy doing community service activities, travel when ever I get a chance, and I am very grateful for each day God has granted me.
We picked up the puppy -- a friend had brought it from Iowa for us -- it is a miniature pinscher, Shetland sheepdog cross. Looks like a miniature pinscher, but is a blue merle as the Sheltie was a blue. It is for my oldest daughter, and it is quite a character. Gives my Jack Russell a run for the money. Sorry to go on so long, but I really feel that we as quads have a lot to offer the world, and the statement to make that a wheelchair is only a means of getting there quicker than our able-bodied friends.
I am looking forward to meeting your Dr. Shem. I have no idea what to anticipate and what they will actually do, but I guess I will find out on the 29th.

   MONEY FOLLOWS THE PERSON

(Rebalancing the Long Term Care System)

Money Follows the Person (MFP) is a simple concept, that when enacted by
Congress, will allow older Americans and people with disabilities who are
currently living in nursing homes and other institutions, to choose to live
and receive support services in the community.

MFP is a demonstration program that will give States a financial incentive
to provide long term care services and supports in the community by
providing a 100% Federal match for home and community Medicaid waiver
services.

BILL NUMBER:

Senate Bill - S 528

House Bill - H 3063

CURRENT LEGISLATIVE STATUS:

MFP is currently included in the Senate Budget Reconciliation bill

but has not been included in the House Budget Reconciliation bill.

We want to see it at 100% federal match and starting in 2006.

BENEFITS OF MFP:

a.. Allows people with disabilities and older Americans
 to choose to live in the community with dignity;

  a.. Assists States to pay for home and community services;
  b.. Assists States to comply with Supr. Court's Olmstead decision;
c.. Rebalances the institutionally biased long term care system.

ACTION NEEDED:

Support of MFP at 100% and starting 2006 in the Conference Committee;

Inclusion of MFP in the final Budget Reconciliation Bill - FY 2006;

Passage of Budget Reconciliation Bill with MFP included - FY2006.
