Greg--how often do you have bowel routine?? in my early stages as a quad,
myself
and some others had those problems when they had us trying every day or every
other day--the nurses in st. louis told us that many quads have better
resullts going every 3 days or so--the doctors here agreed,...so we started
doing bowel routine twice a week--worked out great for us !!! been on this
schedule over 13 years now-- spinal docs told us that going every 3 days or so
will not cause any problems ( some think that a person must go every day ) but
this is not true,,, a quads body function slows down for many people---some may
need to go more often but many do not. I'm not sure if this is related to your
problem but just a suggestion.  good luck- Danny H. here in snow

It is all about diet and if you keep changing your diet, you might continue to
experience issues.  Have you considered performing a good clean, using Easy Go
to clean out the upper bowel.  This way you can begin to train your bowel to go
each day or night at the same time... usually after a meal.  Make sure that
your
Primary Doctor is aware of your issue as something like this is so important
and
a lazy bowel could happen.

Greg,

If you are *sweating buckets* because of being *backed up* I would suggest
going to see a knowledgeable Physical Medicine and Rehab doc
for advice and a check-up and options. Just my opinion.

Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!

2011-01-11 Thread Don Price
Greg [and all,]

If you're sitting on your commode chair for two hours your sweating my have
something to do with pressure--those seats aren't padded very well.

It seems we all have our own systems for bowel programs, but sometimes things
change.  I'll describe how I do mine, in case it might be of help to others.

As a c5-6 quad I am able to tell when I need to have a bowel movement because
of
a certain chill I get, plus some sweating that accompanies that (mild A.D.
symptoms.)  Generally I need to 'go' every other day, but it depends on how
much, and what, I've had to eat or drink.

Once I feel the need to use the toilet I inform my caregiver and he transfers
me
to my shower/commode chair, pulls my pants down, rolls me over the toilet and I
do my business.  Generally this takes less than 15 minutes and requires no
suppository or digital stimulation.  I do, however, use a stimulus that works
well for me:

Years ago I figured out that when in the shower if I sprayed a blast of hot
water underneath me [onto my rectum] it would stimulate my bowels every time.
The water has to be hot, but not hot enough to scald or burn, obviously.
Anyhow, the hot water sprayed underneath, briefly, causes irritation and
promotes the parastalsis to begin.

My shower is right next to my toilet, so when I'm sitting on my commode chair
over the toilet I can still use the [hand-held] showerhead to spray underneath
me and get things started.  This is also a good way to clean myself underneath,
after the BM.  Yes, the water does sometimes get all over the bathroom floor,
but that's an easy cleanup with a towel.

As such, I have found that a set bowel time for me every other day does not
work.  Because I let my body tell me when it's time my BMs are fairly natural,
quick and easy.  However, there are drawbacks to this system as well.  First,
it
requires access to your caregiver at short notice [my caregiver lives with me,
so it works out.]  And, second, it's more difficult to schedule around.

[Another thing that has always been a laxative/stimulant for me is coffee.  A
cup of coffee about 20 minutes before wanting to do a bowel program starts this
moving for me.]

I hope this info helps someone.
Don.

Greg,
I had this problem too.
Sometimes the poop just goes backup, especially using a 2nd magic bullet or
enemeez. So, I only use 1 , if it does not come out, I wait 24 hrs and take
milk/magnesia. this usually makes it come out.

Like what others say, I changed my diet and started taking mirlax.
I go now every other morning, 1 hour instead of 2, and no more digi-stem.

It took awhile to get cleaned out (a few months) after starting tweaking my
diet.
I take 4 senokote the night before. This helps push it down.

good luckI was very depressed with my bp. I dread it.but, thank god
it is much better now.

2011-01-11 Thread Tod Santee
Todd,

I would suggest some of the higher end Labtech mics would be an option.
They are what Dragon used to sell with voice recog. programs. Another is
almost ANY Plantronics mic.

I use a bluetooth enabled Plantronics mic in conjunction with a very cheap
Belkin bluetooth dongle purchased at OfficeMax (they have a good selection
of wired and bluetooth mics, including Plantronics).

I don't work for Plantronics or own stock...LOL. It's just that my very
first cordless phone back in '84-'85 was a Plantronics Liteset built such
that the numbered keypad had a belt clip and it was wired to
a headset comparable in size and sound to today's better bluetooth
earpieces.
I've used several headsets and earpieces since then but none has had better
quality than the different Plantronics I've owned. The one I have now is
used to switch between Dragon and my home phone or between my home and cell
phones.

Good luck to your friend. Everyone has their own tastes and needs. Hope
this was helpful.

I also use a nighttime bag during the day. I hang it under my chair.
The tube runs down the inside of my pants leg. I tell myself that
nobody can really see the bag or the tubing. And I think that's
mostly true. I know some people cover up their bag and tubing with
some sort of material, but I'd rather have mine somewhat visible so
that I can see if it's draining properly and if there is any sediment

people's attention will be on me rather than my tubing.

i use a leg bag and have for almost 20 years. my brand is alpine. the only
problem sometimes is when the bag is new the slit in the rubber in the top
plastic piece isnt always cut all the way through. if you close the bottom
valve, and blow in the top valve when the bag hasnt been used yet the bag
should fill with air. if not the slit in the rubber is closed. i can fix this
with a knife. i cant imagine going out in public with a bag of piss just
hanging out in view. at least put it in another bag you cant see through.

  Eric

My daughter designed a legbag holder/leg rest that I have been using for 14
years, it could be designed to hold a 1500 to 2000 CC bag. We just cut a small
hole in my jeans, then run the tube under my leg to the holder. Nothing to see!

FW: [QUAD-L] Microphone for speech recognition software?

2011-01-11 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I had been using a headset for speech recognition software and to make
telephone calls via Skype. This worked pretty well, except that since I was
wearing a wired headset, I was tethered to my computer. I did not have an
easy way to make a short trip to say hello to someone in another room, etc.
another problem that I had: if I visited a website which any audio, the
microphone in my headset would take up the audio and Dragon naturally
speaking would try to interpret all this as text or commands. Often this
would lock up my computer.

After a bit of research, I decided to try a directional microphone. The idea
was that I might be able to get a microphone which would focus on my voice,
but would ignore other sound sources such as the television, other
conversations, or my computer speakers. According to my research, the most
highly directional microphone is a shotgun .

I decided to try an ATR6550 shotgun microphone from audio-technica. This
microphone sells for about 70 dollars, and you need to buy a microphone
stand. So far I have been extremely happy with the microphone. Dragon runs
much more quickly and accurately with this microphone (rather than creating
a new profile, tell Dragon that you would like to set up a new source, and
retrain Dragon...).

I am still testing this of course... but I am able to play YouTube videos
without the need to put Dragon to sleep, and I am very much enjoying the
freedom I have two move about, no longer tethered to my computer.

Good luck, and take care,

Dave Krehbiel

Subject: [QUAD-L] Microphone for speech recognition software?

Hi everyone,

I have a friend who is using a Mac Computer and he is having trouble
finding a good microphone to work with the speech recognition software.

His voice does tend to change some while he's talking so the cheaper
microphones don't work very good.

He can't use a regular headset but something like a Bluetooth for a cell
phone might work or something on the desk.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject or bowel program

2011-01-11 Thread donald scott
i have been a part of the list since all most the beginning. this topic
comes
up all the time. there is no set in concrete best way to take care of your
bowels. eat well, drink lots of water, and  find what works for you. if you
want
to know what has worked from day one till now 20 years later for me its this.
first off im a c5-c6 complete so what works for me might not for you.

i do my bowel care every other morning. my caregiver comes in at 7am. im
laying in bed on my right side with a peach pad under me. a pillow supports my
back and another between my knees and ankles. caregiver clears the entrance
with
finger. puts in one magic bullet and one glycerine suppository. then rubs my
tummy in circles a couple times. i put a folded one time hand towel on my chest
for sweating. i try and fall back asleep for a while during the time i go. my
caregiver also rests and comes back 1 1/2 hours later and cleans me up. results
are usually good but sometimes not. i always after im cleaned up no matter the
result, have the caregiver restimulate me and rub my stomach again. we wait a
1/2 hour more then clean me again if needed. thats it as for doing the deed. no
sitting on a hard shower chair. i rest right through it most mornings.

as far as diet goes i do have some rules for myself. on the days i did bowel
care i dont eat any spicey foods or drink any alcohol. (good thing there is
weed.) on the other day i eat anything i want and can drink alcohol if i want.
thats it. i do eat fairly healthy but not anything special at all.

as far as pills go i do take senna 1 pill twice a day and docusate 1 pill in
evening on bowel care day and 2 pills in evening the other day.
this program has always worked well. i average about 15 accidents a year and
sometimes thats due to me breaking my rule of no spicy food or booze. also some
accidents happen from illness or stress.

i hope my way of taking care of the dirty deed works for someone.

good luck, donald c5-c6 complete almost 20 years.

Don.
