Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
Hello broken leg, I was in approximately the same predicament that you are in. I broke my leg several years ago in three places, just below the knee, just above the ankle, and the third was the small bone. The first thing the doctor asked me was do you want me just to amputate. YEAH RIGHT! This doctor was trying to save another person's leg and it turned into gangrene and needed to be amputated. Sometimes I question in a doctor's intelligence. New doctor: my second opinion Dr. wasn't quite sure what to do and his young casting assistant suggested a Bob Jones cast. This cast is soft cast of cotton batting wrapped thickly of round the leg. The cotton batting was wrapped with Ace bandages and changed every two weeks. It held the bones in place, and no pressure sores from a hard cast. Works for me! Has anybody else had any experience with 21st-century products? Well last year I received my new chair, but the breath control was a lot more sensitive than Invacare! After months of trying to reprogram and to adjust it with no difference. My local people finally shipped it off to the manufacturer on their dime and found some issues that they resolve. Knowing that I'm a road warrior no matter the season in northern Indiana. They threw on some lithium ion batteries that's supposed to have a range of 30 miles? Yes that's right and as far as I know the only chair in my area powered by these batteries over $2000 worth. So upon receiving this chair back it was much better but far from perfect. Like with anything whether it's a chair or some other form of technology whole load of luck and practice. After finishing my routine at the local elementary school as a volunteer and paid homework tutor after school for one hour. Just needed to pick up a few things at my local dollar store and is not unusual to be out most of the day without anybody with me. Upon turning onto a main isle I caught my foot on the display shelf and never knew that my foot was in harms way. About halfway through my heard the two bones break about 3 inches above the ankle. At first I just thought I must've caught something on my armrest but after asking the cashier the condition of my foot confirmed my suspicions. I have broken my other leg a couple different times but nothing quite like this. Being my independent self I just thought travel across town to get it x-rayed and a sample boot type of support device. Boy was I wrong and somebody that knew what was going on call 911 for me and took a trip in a ambulance. Placing a temporary cast almost all the way to my knee and thinking the orthopedic doctor would put a regular cast after examining me the following day. He is wise thinking the temporary would just do fine and not to worry?? Our personalities and his bedside manner was absolutely horrible or horrifying. I went about after that appointment to get a second opinion and have great difficulties finding a specialist willing to do that. At first they told me my insurance Medicare and Medicaid would not cover that opinion, well at least here in Indiana they do. On a follow-up appointment the bones were all lined up and told me to remain on bed rest. Then three weeks into this waiting game the bones shifted and he was not happy with my attitude with him and vice versa. He gladly sent me to another doctor to deal with this misalignment of bones. I will be having surgery was a nail and screws this coming Thursday and hoping a couple weeks from now to at least get up in my chair? Sorry this post is so long and will be celebrating my 20th anniversary coming up in November 14. Take care and you dear friend. Monty C3/4 complete

[QUAD-L] Survival Manual Suggestions
Think back to right after your accident; you and your family were in the hospital, clueless, trying to figure out what was going to happen and how life was going to be from now on. It was a crazy, scary, emotional time for everyone: you, your family and your friends. Imagine if someone were to hand you--or more likely your family--a Disability Survival Manual that was intended to give you some advice from people who had been there before. What would it include? My Center for Independent Living (CIL) is currently working on such a manual. I'm tasked with writing an article on things that FAMILY and FRIENDS should know. So, I'm reaching out to you, my friends on quadlist, and asking for your input. What do you wish someone had told your family and friends right after your injury? I APPRECIATE any input you may have. I've been using this one for a few years http://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Deluxe-Alternating-Pressure-Mattress/dp/B002VI840M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8qid=1380652721sr=8-2keywords=genesis+mattress On Mon, Sep 30, 2013 at 2:45 PM, greg g...@eskimo.com wrote: The pressure sore I have right now is from my wheelchair not my bed. At the moment I'm using a Clinitron bed. My regular bed has an overlay mattress, an alternating pressure mattress. But I'm not sure how good it is. It has little bubbles all over it. And the bubbles rotate pressure. But the bubbles are not real big and they are not very deep. Even though my sore is from my wheelchair, when it is finally healed up and I go back to my regular bed I don't want my bed to cause any problems. So I was thinking about getting a better alternating pressure mattress. Obviously I'd like to not have to spend a lot of money. The one I have now was only like $120 and it has worked for years. I see one like it listed for like $75. But I think they are alternating pressure but not low air loss. Looking on Amazon there are very many. From 4 to 8 inches thick. The one I was thinking about is this one. http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Medical-Mattress-Replacement-Alternating/dp/B002VWKO9W what do you think? I know they can make it harder to get dressed and things like that. 8 inches might be too thick. It just looks the most durable. Greg

Re: [QUAD-L] Survival Manual Suggestions
Hi Don. I know the Nat Spinal Cord Injury Assoc has produced a Survival Guide for spinal cord injuries. I also believe the 5-6 Major Rehab Units Shepherd, Kessler, RIC, Craig and a few others have a Survival Manual written by their OT Depts. I've learned over the decades that no two injuries are the same. Some are injuries before birth and many are after birth injuries that are permanent. So in compiling anything, please consider everyone (as much as possible) Best Wishes In a message dated 10/1/2013 1:09:59 P.M. I absolutely love Chris's video and how innovative and independent he is. He reminds me of myself when I went away to college at 5 years post. Re: [QUAD-L] Battery
There are three types of batteries you can use 1) Sealed gel which is most expensive 2) Sealed lead acid which work good but you cant fly with them, battery stores sell these like batteries plus pretty reasonable 3) Deep cycle marine battery will work on the cheap at walmart, but if you turn over you risk spilling acid and no flying Advanced auto also sells a sealed gel blue top marine for much cheaper than a chair store. I would recommend sealed lead acid if he doesnt fly. These work well and are half the price and safe. Ive used all these batteries personally and any will work. It depends on if your paying out of pocket or insurance is buying. If money is no object you go for the gel. The standard deep cycle boat batteries have risk involved, I was a car guy so I understood the risk. I wouldnt buy these unless I was broke Ron From: lwillis...@yahoo.com lwillis...@yahoo.com To: quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Tuesday, October 1, 2013 4:21 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] Battery Need a bit of knowledge. Wow, Chris is amazing. I could never do as much as he does ...but I *can* do a lift by myself. I have a power-lift from HandiMove that has a wireless (IR) remote that lets me move one way, or the other, on the ceiling track, as well as up and down. Even cooler, though, the body support does not use a sling, but has big hooks for each leg and grabs me by my torso. Works great and in 10+ years have not had any problems doing it by myself. RE: [QUAD-L] Survival Manual Suggestions
Those are all great suggestions, mine was especially difficult because of being treated in California and living in Nevada but luckily we had already accommodated my mother with her wheelchair and I had been a mental retardation technician for 18 years so we were pretty up to date on Medical Equipment but my house was four levels which made things fun. We finally got a swing arm motor home lift which took me from one level to another and then built ramps for the other two levels.- Outside ramps which made things great fun in our Reno snowy winters.
