Re: [QUAD-L] Alaska and Rhode Island Launch ABLE Programs

2016-12-23 Thread Lori Michaelson
I got noticed via e-mail that the ABLE ACCOUNTS are now nationwide. My
sister had to do some legwork for me to ask some initial questions which
she did yesterday.

They are located in Virginia and therefore Virginia has definitely started.
Before I got the e-mail that the ABLE accounts are now available in each
state I still think states may be slower or have individual things.

In any case, I filled out the initial questions the day before yesterday
(asked by itself) and it says that I am eligible for an ABLE account but I
need to find out more about them before I actually go ahead and click that
button to "open account."

Re: [QUAD-L] pain pills causind A.D.

2016-12-23 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
I take the 10mg standard oxycodone( 6 per day) and 20mg oxycodone time
release(2 per day). Its changed dramatically on how it helps the pain. In the
beginning one 10 mg pill help for 6 hours, now fast forward 4.5 years the same
amount lasts about 2 hours. Its scary because you get dependent on the drug and
if you stop you hurt like crazy, cant sleep and go nuts. Drugs change the way
your brain functions and its very difficult to get off by yourself. Its
impossible to understand unless you have been through it.

Why would taking oxycodone cause my head to sweat and go into mild

not stomach lining damage or something??

Yeah W ... living in the small town with a smalltime Dr. was much more
lenient (by knowing the family of my sister and brother-in-law who lived
there) I'm writing out my monthly prescription for my pain med. I then
moved here and in just the 3 years I was gone from Tucson... it took me
forever to find a physician who would write out pain medications and not
have me come there every month in person. They are farming everyone out to
pain clinics which is more money.

I used to be adamantly against the use of marijuana but now here in
southern Arizona the medical marijuana shops are commonplace. The ones that
offer the oils and lotions, etc. that relieve the pain without getting you
high.

My Medicare Part D prescription plan co-pays are going up a little bit for
next year. Figures... that's the federal government for me. Just getting by
with what I can.

Ultimately it is getting Posttraumatic Syringomyelia in the 90s that caused
the pain and continues to this day. As well as bodily hypersensitivity. It
sucks!

[QUAD-L] "Magic Arm" Bogon and Neewer

2016-12-23 Thread Lori Michaelson
This is where I wish my husband was still alive or I lived near a male
member (the very little left in my family) who wouldn't mind attaching this
on and off whenever I wanted. My live-in caregiver already has too much on
her plate.

I can't leave without saying that I miss my husband was my lover, my best
friend and the most important person in my life. He loved photography &
took thousands of photos during our marriage from scenery to me to
everything else in between. I knew history and genealogy and astronomy and
so much more including having gone to medical school so he was like living
with a physician... just come right out my prescriptions. We were watching
several college courses on history together (which he already knew about
but I got a new interest in history the older I got as I hated in high
school) that he ordered from THE GREAT COURSES. But each one of those was
over $100 and it was something special we did every day during lunch time
or a couple hours each in the afternoon. Therefore I ended up selling all
the ones we didn't get to which was 99% of them... statistically speaking.

He was a mathematician and statistician and work for NASA when I met him
but moved to New York and got a job with Raytheon to marry me. I miss him
more than life itself.

Okay, enough rambling! Thanks Greg! I put it in my Amazon wish list in any
case. I want to go take photos by myself.

[QUAD-L] Sadness, hope & joy around the holidays

2016-12-23 Thread Lori Michaelson
Thanks a bunch Gail!!

It has been 4 1/2 years already but I still miss my husband more than
anyone will ever know even though we often celebrated Christmas with just
the two of us on that day and with friends around that day.

Fortunately, we had his eldest son, his daughter and her husband and their
first child the Christmas before he passed away but his children were grown
by the time we got married (well his daughter wasn't but she was living
with her mother and lived with us for a short time after moving to Arizona
until going to college) so I am just/was just their dad's wife. They have
their own mother still and don't keep in contact with me unless I e-mail
them about something. But I understand.

I then did great during the holidays living with my sister and
brother-in-law but after they wanted me to "move on" because of their
medical problems I had to do something and so now, along with the medical
problems I acquired here shortly after moving here, things have gotten
worse. If it wasn't for my Golden (retriever) daughter I don't feel like I
would have much to live for. This quadriplegic stuff is getting too old
after over 37 years.

*MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU FROM SUNNY SOUTHERN ARIZONA!!! *☀

[QUAD-L] Toothbrushes...

2016-12-23 Thread Lori Michaelson
I don't have any use of my hands or fingers. Just my right hand that is in
a fist. Before using an electric toothbrush about 20 years now I used to
use a universal cuff to hold a regular toothbrush and then of course use my
arm for the motion to do my teeth.

It is my "quad grip" that allows me to hold the bottom of the electric
toothbrush. I just need someone to get the electric toothbrush, put the
toothpaste on it and wrap my thumb and forefinger surround the bottom of it
and then turn it on. I do the right side of my mouth first and then I have
to ask my caregiver to turn the electric toothbrush to do the other side of
my mouth.

I then use (with help from my caregivers over the years) a cup with
Listerine and it mixed with water because straight Listerine is just too
strong for me. My husband used to do the straight Listerine rinse and good
for him! I rinse my mouth out 3 times and spit out what was in my mouth in
an emesis basin and my caregivers take care of all three things (electric
toothbrush, cup and emesis basin).

I am guessing you do not have a quad grip? Rhetorical question since I
wasn't exactly able to answer your question... only what I do. Sorry.

Merry Christmas! ~Lori

I've had like 4 different shaped/color pills, all the same medication. Different makers change the look. And they can be slightly different. Many genaric meds never helped me as much as the name brand. But with those changes, I'd take them in to get checked.
If they are time released, a small crack can turn it into a dangerous pill. Get way too much at once.

[QUAD-L] Kind Words and Thought- Holiday Season

2016-12-23 Thread wheelchair
Thank You for your kind and thoughtful words. I know of two families that
will have their Holiday Celebration impacted by the passing of a loved
one. Our family, with the loss of our son Chris, back in June, and the other
person's entire family. For both our families it is and will always be a
painful thought. I am reminded daily, after all this time, by his friends
and care-givers. Those Facebook contacts from all over the world, who still
contact me regarding their pain of losing a good friend. His friends, and
former classmates that graduated with him from Ball State U and from members
of the Government and Justice Dept who he worked with and served. And
last, but not the least, the racing community of almost 30 years.
Our family is Christian and we all knew that he was on loan to us. His
Mother and Brothers, along with his Sister in Law and his niece and nephews
will meet this weekend to celebrate Christmas and talks of and about Chris.
He meant so much to us and we will share our pictures, videos and memories.
Let this be an example to all on what a great person he was, that he
continues to inspire others in the healthcare industry, the racing industry,
the
education and justice system, even after his untimely passing.
To All I Wish A Very Merry and Holy Christmas.
Best Wishes

Im thinking of this time of year how with the joy and hope we there is often
increased sadness for those who have family and friends who have passed on to
the other side.
There are probably others on this list who are mourning but I'm particularly
thinking of "Wheelchair" who had a recent and sudden loss of his son.
Thank you Wheelchair for continuing to contribute to this list even as no doubt
the pain is still so fresh and raw.

I got an XBOX for the kids and I would love to play with them.

I tried the Kinect fighting. It did recognize me but it keeps
telling me to step forward. I lean way forward but then I cannot
throw punches very long with out falling completely over. It was
good exercising for the arms. It wore me out quick.

With all the technology today, there should be some device for
quads to play games along with able body people.
Please let me know, if you have or know of a controller.
Thanks and //I hope it is not the cost of a new carlol

Ron,
You may be taking the wrong medication. It’s possible that someone switched
meds to acquire the oxycodone. Check out the pill ID you have here:
