Re: [QUAD-L] sharing game changing products
Thanks for sharing. Would you please share a pic of your Sure Hand Lift? I am 16 years post ( C6 C7 incomplete) & shoulders are wearing out. I had rotator cuff surgery last year and the pain is so much better but need to protect them, I don’t think I would make it through another rotator cuff surgery. Hated the lack of independence & pure helplessness!!! I just bought a brand new Honda Odyssey and had the easy lock installed to laminate transferring in and out of my chair. However I’m wondering if you have any issues with the electronic system? I only had it a week and The gate belt broke on day two in my possession. Then I was driving and got a transmission system warning. Drove directly to the Honda dealership and he’s said it was riddled with over 500 errors. It’s currently back with the company in town here who installed the easy lock system. There’s still all kinds of issues. Currently they are talking with VMI about the problems and trying to resolve them. They didn’t give me my old Dodge van back but I have to limit where I go and what I do because of transferring. Thanks a lot for taking time to read this! I wanted to expand upon and share my list with everybody. I think it would be really interesting to hear everybody else's list as well. Products that change my life: Sure Hands Lift – – I'm still using the lift I bought 20 some years ago when doing board and pivot transfers became too rough on me and my attendants. it has never broken down and only needed a replacement battery once. nothing gets me in and out of bed faster-- no Hoyer type sling. It also places me in exactly the right spot in my wheelchair. I only wish they had a travel version. Peristeen Bowel management program-- there is more about this my last post, but basically it is made my bowel program faster, more dependable, easier on my body, and easier on my attendants. Dragon dictation system-- I use this every single day and if I didn't have it I wouldn't be able to work, right creatively, keep up with friends, etc. Ride wheelchair cushion – – I lost a year to pressure sores when every other wheelchair cushion failed me. I tried EVERYTHING. The ride cushion ( which, counterintuitively, is made of hard foam) is fully customized to each user. It got me back in my wheelchair and back to work, spending time with my kids, and enjoying life. Alexa for smart home control-- turning on lights, controlling my bedroom fan, calling attendants hands-free, listening to music, ordering groceries, etc. etc. etc. it's amazing being able to do so many things by voice that once forced me to constantly ask for help. accessible minivan with EZ lock-- after my wheelchair and I fell off of an old school van lift, the ability to just quickly roll up the ramp and into a self locking tiedown was revolutionary. I take it too much for granted. Fully tilting power wheelchair-- my Permobile 300's tilt function has extended my functional time in my chair and made pressure relief much less of a hassle. It's also been my most dependable wheelchair ever. It's going strong at 10 years and has never needed anything more than batteries and replacement cushioning on my armrests. Lithotripsy kidney stone removal-- like many quads I have chronic kidney stones and this tech replaced difficult surgery. now, every 2 to 3 years, I go for a cleaning and I'm up at around in a week. iPhone/ iPad and Siri-- the touchscreen, and later the voice assistant, changed everything about communication, making me much more productive at work. apps made so many life management tasks incredibly easier-- banking, shopping, reading books, listening to books, tracking my kids, scheduling help, paying bills, ordering meds, taking family pictures... couldn't we all go on and on here? Viagra and Ferticare vibrator-- getting erections and ejaculating aren't required to have a lot of fun in bed, but they sure are nice. wheelchair accessible RV by Newmar-- our first accessible RV was a DIY project that mostly worked, but wasn't all that comfortable. Newmar's line of wheelchair accessible RVs were designed from the ground up for comfort and ease of use. they are by far the best product on the market. the family excursions it enables have given me some of my favorite memories thank goodness for these products and technology. I hope they stay on the market forever. so, now it's your turn. WHAT IS YOUR LIST OF CAN'T-LIVE-WITHOUT PRODUCTS? Ed Tessier
[QUAD-L] pressure sore
Hi,So I have a pressure sore and am applying Triad Antibiotic( prescribed by my doc) & have it covered. However, on Friday my doctor never made it clear if I should keep it covered at night. I am wondering what others did at nighttime? It's a stage 2 sore, I think. Thank you!Shelly

Re: [QUAD-L] Time is running out...
That stinks!! I am really sorry you are going through this Lori. I hope you find support. Have you considered a agency who handles some of this for you? We have so much stress in our lives and its overwhelming trying to do it all alone. Hang in there & Good luck. You do matter - to me! I am in shock! To add insult to injury she signed a contract that she had to give me 6 months notice. I did not see this coming. She just had a week off. That leaves me only 2 months & my previous caregiver gave me 6 months notice & 2 more to be available for training. I am a wreck. Of course you know that I know the first people to contact. My family only calls to ask "How are things going?" One would think they would be the first persons to say "Lori, we need to get going on this... what can we do to help you?" Not my family! Believe it or not my biggest concern is my companion dog that everyone around here loves and everyone I run into comments on how pretty or beautiful she is. I would just be sobbing or worse if I could not be with her. I feel like I am being thrown out for garbage. ~Lori -- “Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer.” ― Dean Koontz
Re: [QUAD-L] Sunshine
Greg,LOL! I am just like you! Love the sun & heat so nothing gets done until the sun goes down, seriously! I live in Western PA & hate the winter. The only upside is I do get things done because I am stuck inside. Once spring is here, I am outdoors, given up on "trying" to get things done because all I can think about is "got to get back out in the sun."! I am always cold & only time I am comfortable is in 80 degree weather, the hotter the better. I am a c6 c7 incomplete so to ensure I dont get AD I keep a cup of ice by my side and keep cool by rubbing it on my face, arms and legs. When its over 85 I fill a bucket up with ice & put my feet in it to keep my temp down. Love to hear any tips/tricks you may have to keep cool! There's been 3 or 4 times I've feel forward and couldn't sit backup. The worse was like 110 degrees, I was just out my front door. I was yelling for help, but no one inside could hear me. It felt like forever. Bending forward I can't breath very good or yell loud. Luckily my neighbor heard me after forever. I was so over heated. I was getting really panicked. Greg

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } Same here, I dread this time of year. It's cold, dark and gray until May and also I am stuck inside till then. I am cold ALL the time and can only sleep with 2 heating pads. One under my neck and he other on my chest and neck. I also am in recovery and this time of year is always a struggle for me. Not much to do when I am Snowed in. So my plan now is to take it one day at a time, read and dwell on the positive. It can be a daily struggle sometimes, I agree Meredith. Maybe we could keep in touch and make this time more manageable for both of us?! Take care for now!!
