Hi Billy and others still on the Quad List,
How very heart-warming to receive your nice letter, and to be reminded of
former times when we on the Quad List used to duke-it-out on a variety of
subjects. Yes, I'm pretty long in-the-tooth, looking to celibration of my
eighty-second birthday next January. Haven't yet been instituionalized, still
living
in my own home, so I suppose things could be worse.

About three years ago, I was diagnosed with a syrinx (syringomyelia) at the
site of my injury, which impinges on the pre-existing scar-tissue, and is
slowly shutting me down. I say the slower, the better, but whatever comes
next
may well be the third act of Boyd's Saga. I wish you well, and am extremely
 pleased that you remembered me.
God Bless,
Boyd

My gosh, I knew he had been a quad a long time and he was probably the
oldest that I know of, but I had no idea that he was injured in the 50s. I
did, however, meet a quadriplegic who was about the same level as I am
(C2-3) who was hurt in and some sort of accident during the last year of the
Korean War (1953). I haven't had any contact with him in the last nine

Based on what I have read so far, I believe I know who is the oldest
quadriplegic we are aware of; it is Mr. Boyd. I wrote to him and was
tickled to death when he wrote back. Here is the message.

Haven't yet been instituionalized,
still living in my own home, so I suppose things could be worse.

About three years ago, I was diagnosed with a syrinx (syringomyelia) at the
site of my injury, which impinges on the pre-existing scar-tissue, and is
slowly shutting me down. I say the slower, the better, but whatever comes
next may well be the third act of Boyd's Saga. I wish you well, and am
extremely pleased that you remembered me.
God Bless,
Boyd

Hi Paul,
I don't know, but I think there was a wife of a quadriplegic that was
injured sometime around 53, but I don't know if she is still posting. I don't
remember seeing a post from her for quite some time. I had saved her
information
on my other computer I think, but it is being repaired.

That is a very interesting topic. How was the health of the quadriplegic you
know Bill? Paul, what was the cause of your friend's death? . guess it
really depends on how well you take care of yourself and of course if your
caregivers are careful with your skin and that kind of care that they give
you. I
had always thought that we died from lung or kidney problems. I don't know
what the latest statistics are.? .

I know a C6-7 quad who is 54 years post and 71 years old.

The quad I know is in great health. He retired last year after running his own
DME store chain in MI for 40 years. He started with one small wheelchair store
and 15 years later had 8 stores selling beds, wheelchairs, shower/commode
chairs and other medical equipment. I bought everything from him from 1968
until I moved to FL in 2003. I wish he'd open a store here.

Hi,
I have had the honor of meeting a fellow by the name of Jim Boen who has
written a book called 50 years of Quadriplegia. He should by now be 75 years
old. When I met him last autumn, he appeared to be in quite good health. His
eyes were still very bright, and he certainly had a wonderful attitude. If you
enter his name into a search engine, you can find his free book. I found it to
be very, very entertaining, as well as enlightening. His PCA commented that he
is probably the nation's oldest and longest living quad. If you guys do look
up his book, let me know what you think of it.
Journey well through life.
