Re: [QUAD-L] wondering about people

2022-02-20 Thread Edward Tessier
Hey Jeff,

I tested positive in September. I also have diminished lung capacity (half of
my left lung is scar tissue from a pulmonary infection a year after my accident
in 1985)

thanks to the vaccine, my symptoms were very mild-- fatigue, shortness of
breath, dizziness. and I'm so thankful it wasn't worse. for example, my
wife's acute infection was much worse and she has some long covid symptoms.

while I am sure I dodged a bullet, my primary attendant has pointed out that
the shortness of breath and dizziness never went away completely. I still
haven't been able to return to a regular exercise program because just a few
minutes of weight work and the room starts spinning.

I can hardly complain, all things considered. I really haven't told my wife
and family. It would just make them worry and what good could it do?

I'm curious if any quads that got Covid had breathing issues before acquiring
the virus? I lost all muscle tone in my diaphragm during my original injury
and, naturally, could only build it back so much. I breathe on my own but
probably have 50% or less lung capacity than the average able-bodied person,
and Covid is a respiratory virus.

Hey ya’ll!

I’ve been on the quad list forever - just am usually quiet. I had COVID for
Christmas (along with my hubby and kiddo). Mine was basically a sinus
infection. I felt a little tired, had a lot of nasal discharge and a lot of
nose blowing. I also lost my sense of smell, which I haven’t fully recovered
yet. No fever, no massive tiredness, no breathing problems. If I didn’t test
positive for COVID, I would have just thought it was a sinus infection. 路‍♀️ I
had the flu about 3 years ago and was wiped out solid for 2 weeks - it was way
worse then the COVID was. I am unvaccinated and will not be - plus I have
shiny new antibodies floating around now.

2019-11-15 Thread Lori Michaelson
I have always ordered Magic Bullet suppositories them from Express Medical.
They are expensive and my only insurance is Medicare so I don't know if
Medicaid would cover them or not. They are, and have been, the only ones
that work. Enemeez is one that I tried to use back in 2004 or something but
it was not reliable. I would go many many many hours after using that so
back to the Magic Bullet. A long long time ago I used to purchase a box of
100 but now I purchased them In packs of 10 for $6.60. So I have to pay
shipping and handling. You'll only get free shipping and handling when
purchasing things from this site and having your order $95.

Unlike Greg, I would hate to have a colostomy or an ileostomy as it
requires much more maintenance and I don't have all the help that Greg has.
I would also lose my Home Healthcare Agency which comes to change my
suprapubic catheter and provides me with all the supplies. Home health care
agencies will not help you if you have a colostomy or ileostomy and they
accept Original Medicare only. That is why I can't be Medicare Advantage
Plan which is stupid but those Advantage Plans make a lot of money too. I
am not eligible for Medicaid and I know what needs to be done to be
eligible for it.

Oh no. I am looking at their website (and glad I ordered semi-recently when
I did) and it says This product is not eligible for rush shipping.
Currently on backorder from the manufacturer. Projected release: unknown.
This item is on long-term back order from the manufacturer and cannot be
purchased at this time. Please call (800)633-2139 for more information.

Television, controlled with Amazon echo in combination with a Broad link RM Pro.
Telephone, can place calls with Amazon echo. Receive calls with a cell
phone that has speech recognition to answer and place calls.
Window unit, I use Broadlink for that as well, but I have to press a
button on my cell phone. When I set it up, I didn't have the remote
anymore, so I couldn't program the RF. Not positive, but it may be
possible if you have a remote that works with your window unit, record
the RF for the air conditioner and label it as a fan. For some reason
Broadlink won't let you set up the app for voice access to control an
air-conditioner. I control a fan with Amazon echo along with the
Broadlink.

voice, switch, mouth joystick. I think most methods can be used with either
Apple Mac or Microsoft Windows.

The Morse code device I use is hardware so it works with any computer with
an usb port, it doesn't matter what operating system it has (Windows, Mac,
Linux, Android). I can use it with no voice and no hand or head movement. I
sip and puff morse code into an air tube.

Mouth joystick is another hardware option that connects to a usb port. It
requires some head movement but enables you to move a mouse around.

70s and sunny but by Wednesday it will get down into the 50s and probably
cloudy according to one weather forecast but they never really know. I
looked for a two or three weather forecast and see what turns out. The
weather is nice but I can't really enjoy it.

But I had an arm injury almost 2 weeks ago now and I think it is a torn
tendon or bicep. I was rolling on my side and when my top half (torso)
began falling backward (which it almost always does but perhaps not such
severity... I can never remember) I usually use my left arm to compensate
and helping me roll back over on my right side. Right then and there I
could not move my left arm (which is my bad arm anyway) like I used to and
have still not been able to. I made an appointment to go see an orthopedic
specialist but they can't get me in until January 7. It bruised up really
bad and all away across my collarbone so it was probably a combination of
shoulder/upper arm injury on the inside. It is also swelling and now my
left hand that just hangs down anyway is swelling. I am using cold packs
and ibuprofen which helps.

I still have the pretty much monthly bladder infections that are
multi-drug-resistant so that causes me severe bladder pain when they take
hold and my urologist has to calling something because I can't stand that
type of pain. I might as well have a bunch of broken glass in my bladder.
He calls in antibiotics that always takes away the pain so they are doing
something but they keep coming back and they were 'Hospital Acquired' and I
remember when they started to began (each bacteria) and one of them began
when I was going to one local hospital/clinic to see a urologist and the
last bacteria that I do not recognize must have been gotten when I was at
the hospital at the end of June through the beginning of July in ICU.

I am a mess and the first time I have been alone for Christmas. Last year I
had my Golden Retriever Daughter with me but I lost her in April of this
year. I adopted a German Shepherd (who will be two years old on January 2)
and I thought she would be settled down by now but she still has a lot of
puppy in her. I am planning on working with a local canine training center.
She is extremely intelligent but needs to stop pulling so hard on my
wheelchair when we are walking and barking nonstop and lunging toward every
dog she sees because she wants to play with them. Needless to say, the
couple who brought her over one day lied to me about getting their
vaccinations to me (they never did) and keeping in touch to see how she was
doing and taking her back if she did not work out for me (which they never
did). I was not going to get a puppy (under a year old) and this bundle of
energy was a little over 18 months old and she was walking calm when they
arrived because I wanted to meet them outside to see how she walked
alongside of them and then be inside. She acted laid back and relaxed but
she is FAR from that. She was kennel/crate trained and the previous owners
(of a whole six months) said they would get her crate to me which they
never did. Fortunately I found a lady nearby no longer needed hers so that
has helped a great deal. She is house trained but sometimes overnight she
wants to have accidents and we can't have that happen more often than not.

Needless to say also that I did not have my arm injury before adopting her
and usually I do a ton of research on everything (which I did my arm) but
not on German Shepherds. They require A LOT of physical and mental
exercise. This is not a problem for me because I loved walking/running my
previous two dogs since December of 2001 but they were couch potatoes when
we adopted them (my husband and I) and we did not know their histories
either but we were extremely fortunate with both of them by having them
both Golden Retrievers, laid back, and basically trained themselves to
become my US Certified Support/Companion dogs.

My caregiver has always eaten at a different time than me so I have been
eating alone for the last three years. Because of all that has been going
on me did not even get Christmas recreations out this year. It will be just
another day.

Merry Christmas to all of you who have family of some kind and are not
having one physical problem crop up one right after the other unexpectedly.
I think my arm might be healing but it is going to take a while. Don't even
know if it is something that can be seen on imaging especially if it is
soft tissue.

There are plenty of wheelchair options for a child that size. They need to have
him evaluated at a pediatric specialty hospital by the OTs and PTs there who
can recommend something appropriate. Medicaid will typically pay for the chair,
as well as other equipment he might need. The family should not let a vender
sell them a chair without having an eval by an OT /andor PT with experience
with pediatric equipment because it is critical to get it right.

paralyzed from the neck down and connected to a respirator I was 18 years old I
was 18 days away that I was going to turn 19 when the doctors told my mother at
that time that I was going only survive 72 hours beside before my accident I
was already legally blind but when I was born I was completely blind after 6
surgeries on my eyes I started seeing a little I started seeing when I was 11
years old doctors consider me legally blind I could see a little better than
nothing most of my life since I been a quadriplegic I was in the nursing home
2001 I got out I was scared to get out because like I said most of my life I
was in the nursing home I thought it wasn't possible for person in my condition

did not need to prove to no one that I was able to do it outside the nursing

the right choice I did for myself since I been a quadriplegic only one time bed
sore and I was in the nursing home since then I haven't had one until now my
body is 100% better than any quadriplegic that is in the nursing home no rashes
no bed sores at all I used to get more sick when I was in the nursing home I
used to go more often to the hospital when I was in the nursing home when I was
there out of the ear I used to go to the hospital 5 times out of the year it

medicate they told his mother and father medicate doesn't cover his wheelchair
because there's no wheelchair for his age because she's too small that I have
to wait until he gets older so he can get a wheelchair I do not agree on that
and mother and father doesn't know too much about programs out there they don't
know anything about people with disability they got other kids but there are
walking but the different from me and you guys yes we were young when our
accident happened by we had a chance to walk to run to play we know how it
feels to do that this little boy never had a chance to run to plate to enjoy to
be a child that is sad every 1 of us we been blessed different ways sense are
accidents happen some of us we had her mother and father like him we grew up
and some of us we don't have our mother or father anymore by one way another we
got bless by got put us somebody special and our life to be part of our life to
help us and to understand this like I said we were young and we had a lot of
dreams about those dreams went down the drain when we end up being a
quadriplegic whenever going to have a chance to catch up what we miss we are
able to defend ourselves to fight for our rights and say what hurts or doesn't
hurt what we don't like and what we like some of us been a quadriplegic longer
than others now going back about this little boy she is going to grow up like
us his parents not going to be there when he gets old is not able to talk you
not able to say what hurts or doesn't hurt cannot express herself his feelings
that is very sad is not able to fight for his right if in the future is not
able to talk like he cannot talk right now now in the future if he's able to
talk that will help them a little we had a chance to go to school and we learn
how to read and spell in the future for this little boy if you continue the way

Re: [QUAD-L] Wondering--Power Chair for 4-year-old

2018-09-30 Thread Robert Vogel
Hi Ismael,

I read your email—an amazing life you are leading, and huge kudos to you for
reaching out and helping this child and family!!!
I hope my input helps you help them.

For what it is worth, I have worked as a manufacturer’s rep for a wheelchair
company (Everest & Jennings in the mid-1990’s) as well
as a representative for a local DME, wheelchair store in the early 2000’s. Even
back in 1995 we had pediatric power wheelchairs and
controllers—chin control, or sip ’n puff—that could accommodate a
four-year-old. In fact I have a vivid recollection of bringing a pediatric
power wheelchair for an evaluation of a child that had no movement below the
neck and was around age 4. The eval went well, and the
child was excited and happy to be in control of a power chair and moving around
on their own. As long as the 4-year-old has the cognitive
ability to drive a chair—which should be no problem for an average
4-year-old—major wheelchair manufacturers, Permobil, Sunrise,
and Quantum all make pediatric power chairs that can easily fit a 4-year-old.

In addition, in my job a journalist for New Mobility magazine I get to attend
the yearly International Seating Symposium, part of which includes
displays of the latest and greatest mobility devices by wheelchair
manufacturers—I have seen the pediatric versions of the power wheelchair
manufacturers
below and each company makes a power chair that can custom fit a 4-year-old and
be outfitted with controls and seating to accommodate them.

Quantum Pediatric power chair(s):

Sunrise Pediatric power chairs:
http://www.sunrisemedical.com/power-wheelchairs/zippie/mid-wheel-drive

Permobil Pediatric power chairs:
https://permobilus.com/products/power-wheelchairs-by-permobil/pediatric/

Hope this helps. The key is—as Eric Olson wisely explained—the family needs to
talk with a DME provider (wheelchair dealer) in their
area.

Sincerely,
Bob V

2018-09-30 Thread Ismael Cavazos
Hello guys October 8 is going to be 37 years that I've been a quadriplegic
paralyzed from the neck down and connected to a respirator I was 18 years
old I was 18 days away that I was going to turn 19 when the doctors told my
mother at that time that I was going only survive 72 hours beside before my
accident I was already legally blind but when I was born I was completely
blind after 6 surgeries on my eyes I started seeing a little I started
seeing when I was 11 years old doctors consider me legally blind I could see
a little better than nothing most of my life since I been a quadriplegic I
was in the nursing home 2001 I got out I was scared to get out because like
I said most of my life I was in the nursing home I thought it wasn't
possible for person in my condition to be out from the nursing home and
connected to a respirator I knew it that I did not need to prove to no one
that I was able to do it outside the nursing home that I needed to prove
only to myself it was hard and scary in the beginning with God help I
continued being outside the nursing home and I was the right choice I did
for myself since I been a quadriplegic only one time bed sore and I was in
the nursing home since then I haven't had one until now my body is 100%
better than any quadriplegic that is in the nursing home no rashes no bed
sores at all I used to get more sick when I was in the nursing home I used
to go more often to the hospital when I was in the nursing home when I was
there out of the ear I used to go to the hospital 5 times out of the year it
wasn't one thing was another but I was getting more sick now that I'm out
sometimes I go one time out of the year to the hospital or sometimes to
years passed by and I don't go to the hospital at all I been blessed many
times different ways several times and I've been lucky the only thing I'm
not getting any younger like I said I'm blessed and I am continually being
bless by Jesus let me tell you guys something else on Friday I met this
couple they have a little boy that is 4 years old he is paralyzed from the
neck down and also connected to a respirator's he is very alert the sad
thing about it is not able to talk and also he has a tooling inside his nose
so he can eat his mother and father was telling me they were trying to get
him a wheelchair but according medicate they told his mother and father
medicate doesn't cover his wheelchair because there's no wheelchair for his
age because she's too small that I have to wait until he gets older so he
can get a wheelchair I do not agree on that and mother and father doesn't
know too much about programs out there they don't know anything about people
with disability they got other kids but there are walking but the different
from me and you guys yes we were young when our accident happened by we had
a chance to walk to run to play we know how it feels to do that this little
boy never had a chance to run to plate to enjoy to be a child that is sad
every 1 of us we been blessed different ways sense are accidents happen some
of us we had her mother and father like him we grew up and some of us we
don't have our mother or father anymore by one way another we got bless by
got put us somebody special and our life to be part of our life to help us
and to understand this like I said we were young and we had a lot of dreams
about those dreams went down the drain when we end up being a quadriplegic
whenever going to have a chance to catch up what we miss we are able to
defend ourselves to fight for our rights and say what hurts or doesn't hurt
what we don't like and what we like some of us been a quadriplegic longer
than others now going back about this little boy she is going to grow up
like us his parents not going to be there when he gets old is not able to
talk you not able to say what hurts or doesn't hurt cannot express herself
his feelings that is very sad is not able to fight for his right if in the
future is not able to talk like he cannot talk right now now in the future
if he's able to talk that will help them a little we had a chance to go to
school and we learn how to read and spell in the future for this little boy
if you continue the way is wet out communicating is going to be very bad in
the future brother and sisters probably not going to be there for him he
probably going to end up in the nursing home like I did in the nursing home
is terrible's that's why I say we been blessed compare to him yes we got
problems in life this and that but this little boy 80% more problems what we
have when his mother and father told me about his condition they put me to
think right now his parents take care of him at home let me ask you this
guys do you know if it's true what medicate and Medicare told his mother and
father I don't agree on that and I don't believe in that there's got to be a
wheelchair for his size for somebody could push him around I've never seen a
wheelchair that small have you guys seen a wheelchair that small I would
like

Hello!!In the evening, I just call my other half's name, we have separate
rooms, but very close. But when it's in the middle of the night, I will call my
mother on the phone,  She likes with us but in the other side of the house. She
is my full time caregiver. He works 40+++ hours a week, so after he gets off
work, he takes care of me until time for bed!
Hopefully I have helped you a little bit??

[QUAD-L] Wondering what ...

2005-07-05 Thread Lori Michaelson

When I REALLY have nothing better to do (which is rare as it's a zoo here most of the time) ... I
sometimes wonder what the next BIG EVENT or issue will be.

Examples:

OJ case
Princess Diana tragedy
Clinton fiasco
The big tsunami
Michal Jackson's endless trials
Baby Jessica
Iraq war (or any war for that matter)

NOT THAT IT HAS TO BE A TRAGEDY! But tragedies keep us talking more. Because misery DOES love company?
Or our human nature side enjoystragedy intrigue?

You get the idea ... it's always something that keeps our attention. That's what makes life interesting.

Some things keep us busy talking years, others months, others weeks, other's sometimes only days.

If it isn't nature itself causing chaos, it's human nature.

I wonder what's next?
