Re: [QUAD-L] Devotees....come on people....

2007-02-22 Thread kaye allard

Women don't need problems, we have them already -it's called violence and
rape. It's why we have to be carefull. I think any woman who gets the
creeps from someone who has a fetish that involves her disability better
listen to her instincts and use her best judgement. We don't need to choose
from the bottom of the pile. I'm sure there are some nice devotees out
there but it is an entirely different matter for women.

The chair turns heads and attracts attention. But once that happens, there
are fewer women than men who will pursue someone because they think they
might be able to take advantage. It's just the way it is whether we are
talking about able bodied people or whatever. This is not to attack the
above post, it's just the last one I read in this thread.

I have have had men who have been extra weirdly friendly who I avoid and
only one online who had a fetish. It's nice for someone to be open about
that I guess. If you want to go along with that all I can say is be
careful. It seems that usually a person might think Yeah he/she is in a
chair AND they are cool and I want to get to know them because of something
other than the chair. This seems more healthy...no?

this is a group where anyone can voice their concerns and no one,
including u, should judge people for those concerns. i have my share
of real problems as does any quad. it's not like devotees are a
huge concern that i sit around and worry about but it's definitely an
issue i wanted to address and see if anyone had experienced the same
thing. after reading your response, i think u may be confused -- a
devotee is not just a person drawn to the chair -- it's a deeper
psychological issue than pure attraction or interest in the chair.

Not only are you 100% right, but I am bothered when I'm critisized for not
trying to understand them while they get off not understanding reality or the
handicapped community. I understand they are handicapped in the sense that they
are mentally ill. A desire to disfigure yourself is not a lifestyle choice, and
should be treated in the same niche as those wanting to committ suicide not
those with a permanent disability. They are a danger to themselves and others
and should be treated as such. They should not be assimilated into the
handicapped community as anything other than mentally and socially challenged.
Not physically handicapped. What happened to me was the result of a drunk
driver and the trauma that I went through was completely different than the
relief that some wackjob is looking to achieve through some self mutilation.
I needed rehab, they need long term observation in a padded cell on a liquid

didn't know it was so prevalent. for those who aren't familiar w/ the
term, read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

some of these men are forthcoming about their fetish and others may
not even know they fall into the devotee category, or they simply
deny it. i am somewhat intrigued by the thoughts, feelings, and
backgrounds of these men out of pure curiosity but mostly it makes me
angry and i don't understand it at all. a lot of these men are
confused at why i would be so appalled, but i just think we, as a
disabled community, fight so hard to be seen as equals to the non-
disabled, so to be given any attention, whether good or bad, just for
being disabled is wrong. these devotee dudes join myspace and if you
look through their friend lists, it is all women in wheelchairs. it
creeps me out! i just think everyone should be aware of what is going

paul,

i am not saying in any way that we are not different -- i embrace the
things that set me apart from everyone else. i am just saying that
just b/c we ARE different doesn't mean we should only be
characterized by that difference. there's a lot more to me being me
than just a wheelchair.

i am surprised u think more women are attracted to men in chairs than
vice versa. maybe we both think the way we do b/c we can't experience
being the opposite sex so therefore are not aware of the behind-the-
scenes things that occur. i think women have an inherent nurturing
quality similar to motherhood which attracts them to men w/
disabilities. they are more willing to overlook the obstacles and
concentrate on the person in the chair. i think this is a very
different thing than devotee-ism. obviously there ARE women devotees
but it just seems more frequent in males. out of pure emotional and
physical attraction maybe more women are attracted to disabled men
than vice versa, but as far as the phenomena of devotee-ism, i think
men take the cake.

interesting is that this doesn't have the negative connotation that

I have had a concern about devotees and have had several contact me through

instant messenger. I did however meet a devotee through disabled united
that was actually really nice. He had medical problems when he was
young. I don’t know if that is why but I emailed back and forth with him
and he seems to be one of the few that is nice. We decided to be pen pals
since he is in Denver and I'm in MD and he is Jewish and wants to find someone
also Jewish. Not all of them have bad intentions its just that it is
difficult to figure out which ones are good and frankly I'd rather just stay
away from them in general because you just don't know. I'm curious to know
about other peoples experiences with devotees.
