[QUAD-L] Handcycle Dan hearn
I was going to buy a handcycle back in 09. I did a lot of research and figured out I needed one that had a transfer level about the same height as my wheelchair. I was going to buy a quickie mach 2 in toxic green. Then I ran across a company called Rio Mobilty out of California. They had this attachable handbike called a rio dragonfly. Once you attach four brackets to your manual chair and do some adjusting, you can take the bike on and off in about 5 minutes unassisted. It has seven gears, a brake and c5 quad grips to propel the trike. Whats great about it that you are still in your chair with your cushion and everything so no worries about skin breakdown or falling out of the bike. I purchased it for around 1000.00 dollars and have been using it ever since. in fact, ive already worn a tire off of it. I use it 30-40 times a year because its so simple to take on and off the chair. Those paras you see at creve couer park are led by the same man that runs the disabled swim organization I was involved with. we should meet over there one afternoon Dan this year. Re: [QUAD-L] hi dan what the status of your syrinx
Hi Ron, yeah I get short tempered a lot tooespecially when pain lasts long periods and don't seem to let up much. I still pretty much take the same meds as you still---Elavil--Lorazapam at times and vicodin, also oxybutinin for bladder spasm pains. My family Doc sent me to a bone specialist because of all the left arm pain and heaviness and that doc said it is all from my neck--probably pinched nerves and syrinx and the x-rays need to be seen by a brain-spinal euro doc-so far I have not gone to the last Doc yet--I doubt there is much they can do anyway. My pains are intense some days and other days it seems to go into remission where it is at least tolerable. Re: [QUAD-L] Hey Dan, Meds Question
Yes, Ron if you read the side effects of both those meds they can cause weight gain in some people. I got injured at age 40 so I got a bit of a quad gut myselfI found that many quads who get injured in teens or twenties or able to hold off the quad gut much better.Lyrica has really seemed to be working so far, I have been on it 2 weeks--I take 75ml twice a day--I have quit the amytriptyline and lorazapam for now. I was told you can take amytriptyline with lyrica but not the Lorazapam. DanRONALD L PRACHT [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi Dan,I was wondering how the lyrica is working for you? Re: [QUAD-L] Hey Dan, Meds Question
Amitriptyline can slow the gut and cause distention and bloating. I stopped it for that reason. Sandy

Re: [QUAD-L] Hey Dan...about lyrica
I was in tons of pain. I was taking 1200mg of neurontin 3 times a day and that didn't do it so I took methadone on top of it and the pain wasn't gone but better. I now take lyrica and I barely have pain. I love it. Go for it. Why not? [QUAD-L] Hey Dan, about syrinx pain and meds
Hey, Im still dealing with nerve pain in back and stomach areas. I take 50 mg amytriptyline at night when I need it, and two lorezapams a day when I need it. I find that swimming helps me, I do that twice a week through a program here called Show Me Aquatics which is a swimming program for the disabled here in St. Charles. The next time I go to the doc Im going to try Lyrica as well, Ive heard great things about the drug. As far as my independence I can transfer, drive, cut toenails, cathe, basic meals, dress.but I havent been able to do bowell routines independently yet. I swear to myself eventually I will but like you Dan my help which is my dad doesnt wantb to let me take over, so my only chance is to learn to do it on my own while he s at work. This is very challenging, so I havent accomplished that yet. Ron c7.8 years in Quadadise

Wow , Ron that is great- you can do much more than I can but like I said my wife never had any patience even from the very beginning she never wanted me to try anything... the physical therapists told me sorry some are like that--At least when i'm up, I am very independent all day and need no help. I just keep a sandwich or something handy for lunch and even work part time doing calls for a computer company near me. [QUAD-L] To Dan
Hey, Im a c7 going on 8 years post. As far as popping in the shoulders , this is normal to some extent. Ranging your shoulders out should help this. If your shoulders are hurting badly for a long period of time I would go easy on them for awhile and see if it gets any better. All the doc is going to do is ask if you want a cortisone shot, or he may insult you saying you have carpal tunnel syndrone. The key is dont get to excited over this, the pain may go awayand time will tell you how to deal with it. Ive had minor shoulder injuries and got scared but I pulled through. Dr. Wice told me something a few years ago about quad living.ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. This statement pissed me off but now I can see where hes coming from. Be strong and if it doesnt get better by all means consult the doc. Ron
[QUAD-L] Hey DAN
hi, I had aol dial up for three years, paid 23.90 a month. When I heard about yahoo dsl going for 19.95 a month with a one year contract I jumped on it. I did have some trouble cancelling aol but after three talks with them they sent me a letter terminating service. Yahoo dsl is many times faster, and is little trouble once you get your external modem they give you hooked up and rolling , as well as installing your new software. I think now they are offerring it for 14.95 a month, but that was last i heard. In short its a positive change. ron
Re: [QUAD-L] Hey DAN
Thanks for that info. Ron, I think I will be trying them before long.AOL has so many problems such as running very very slow and constant boots by losing conection and even when it gets ok...it's always only temporary, then back to same old problems. Dan

Yes, Ron - I am sure you are correct that it is the bearings-- now like you said I just need to get vendor to help me find out what replacement bearings I will need. The other chair you mentioned . is it a commode shower chair also ? If it is I will gladly give you $ 125.00 for it, and then perhaps get parts needed and have my old one fixed when I figure out what to order, and my son has time to try and repair it for me. Thanks so much for your help Ron,* Dan* .

Berry Bearings and Bearing Headquarters are just two national companies selling replacement bearings, for those in need. Now to check the yellow pages. try a quick trip to ACE Hardware. They have lots of spare parts. Take your old bearings. Maybe try a bicycle shop. Hi, I have a guardian shower chair with the 24 inch wheels and is stainless steel. I believe the problem with your chair is the bearings are bad where the forkstem inserts into the chair frame. I had the same problem, rust was actually running down the sides of the fork. My dad replaced the bearings but was no easy task. The only way you could get this fixed would be possibly calling adaptability, they have days where they fix chairs at no cost. Other than that option you could take pictures anddescribe to your wheelchair vendor you have bad bearings where the casterforks insert into chair frame. I also have a invacare shower chair with24 inch rear wheels that has had little use. Ill sell that to you for $125.00 if you want it. It was over 1000.00 new. Ron c7

Hey, You can get them through Express Medical Supply 1 800 633 2139. They are the same price there and you will get them in 2 days as they are shipped from a missouri location. Another source you can use is Sportaid, they are pretty good yto deal with and same price. I prefer Express because they get me better expiration dates. Re: [QUAD-L] Hi Dan
Hi Ron, good to hear from you. I'm pretty much the same as you on meds. I take 10mg of amitriptyline ( elavil ) every night to help with pain and sleeping-- Doctor Wice said in the future I can increase the dosage from 10mg to higher if I need to. Like You I will take Lorazapam at times I feel it's needed. My family Doc also gives me vicadin to help on day's that pain if severe. My brother was curious about quad pains, I explained to him that we learn to live with much pain and that what we deal with most every day would probably be a big shock to a healthy non paralyzed person. Dan, St. Louis county Mo. c-6 8.5 years Post
[QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Appreciate your input. My psysiatrist better known as a rehab doc is at St. Johns hospital. His name is Martin Wice. He told me to avoid surgery for now, but the guy is an old schooler has no suggestions on much of anything but dealing with it. I was and still am pretty active. I swim, lift weights and wheel to stay in shape but this syrinx has really upset me. I ca only do about half as much as I did b4 syrinx. I keep thinking maybe my activity had something to do with syrinx formation but everybody says no. What meds are you on to combat the pain? Ron c7 7 yrs post
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Ron, My pain really got bad this year, I began taking elavil about 2 weeks agoI was on 1mg Lorazapam for years...I was going to see if I can still take both but you said you do, so i guess its ok. I also take vicadin or flexeril muscle relaxer on occasion. Since I began taking elavil I feel kinda out of it early in the mornings when I get up..does it seem to have that effect on you? Dr. Martin Wice is one of my doctors too... he is strict on pain meds...so I get some from family doctor. I'm in Maryland Heights Area...Where are you Ron ? I got hurt august 3rd 1997 car wreck . *Dan*
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Yo Dan, Ive been taking 1mg lorezapam twice a day, ten 25 mg elavil at night. i have noticed im kind of out of it in morning but I think its worth it. Neurontin didn't work for me at low doses anyway. Mixing them works fine no negative effects, docs gave approval. My general doc is John Obrien. Im from the St. Peters area, I used to go to Grace church in maryland heights. How long have u had syrinx so far? Ron
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
yep I spent anout 12 years going to that church. the pastor there is my financial advisor. its a great place for support Ill tell you that, they all were there when I had my wreck and now even though I dont attend much they still are in contact with me. We need to keep in touch Dan we have almost identical medical situations, feels good to know someone is in same boat, I thought I was alone.. Ron, c7
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Ron do you by chance use a urologist named Doctor Perry Lovingood ? I see him and he said he treats another Quad named Ron ? He works out of like 6 different hospitals.including St. Johns-- Depaul and Christian Northeast. I am just curious because we both had Martin Wice as a rehab Doc. Thanks, Dan
