Fw: [QUAD-L] Pain need input

2012-08-17 Thread Candle
I had been referred to a pain specialist. He wanted to do the injections
instead of prescribing meds. I couldn't do the injections because we had tried
before and I reacted badly, trouble breathing and almost passing out. That
doctor stopped the procedure so there was no way I was going through that again
with a new doctor. Then the new guy said that his options were the shots or
surgery. ??? What the ... I told him my pain was managed fine on meds so I
didn't see a reason for anything invasive. He wouldn't prescribe the meds. I
even had another doctor say the pain management specialist shouldn't have tried
to bully me into anything.

So I went back to my doctor of physical medicine. He wasn't in the network that
I was in at the time and I had to pay out of pocket. Now he is in the network
and it is easier on me financially. I go to him twice a year for my pills. I
don't take them every day and I worry about the meds losing their effectiveness
so I use a lot of motrin and safe the pain meds for the stabbing pain. So the
dull aches often keep me stuck in bed, but that is the trade off for me and I'm
willing to deal with it at this time. So far I am lucky that I don't need a lot
of pain meds.

Hi guys,

Im a c7 quad completec for 15 years since Jan 16 98. Ive been pretty
active swimming biking and such but started having considerable pain that
altered my life in 2004. I was diagnosed with a syrinx at c7 which is where my
initial injury was. I started on lorezapam 1 mg 3 times a day and 50 mg
amytriptyline at night. This is barely helping me Imalso taking an oxy a day
from when my appendix burst last year but my supply is going to run out. My
primary physician wont give me any pain pills. My original rehab doc or
physiatrist is in another network. What should I do to get the proper help with
my pain? Should I seek outanother physiatrist?or should I get referred to pain
management? Who will listen to a quad in pain that needs help?

I take Tramadol that would put House to shame! I also take Percocet & Valium.
I've been on these meds for the last 15 yrs, (21 yrs post). They take the edge
off then I take more then I fight severe constipation, Vicious circle.

I have been disabled for 31 yrs. I have only been in pain for about a year. It
is in my neck, upper back and shooting into my left arm. I have tried
chiropractic adjustments but he doesn't want to make me worse so he actually
told me that I should stop.  I had a cortisone shot in my neck but it did not
help. So I have tried naproxin, tramadol and vicodin. The vicodin is the only
medication that helps. I don't want to take it for the rest of my life because
I know it isn't safe.  My question is what do all  of you do for pain?  Thanks.

Hi all.

I haven't been on this list that long, I was on it a long time ago but I
haven't been up to date until about a month ago. So I have missed any
discussions about dealing with chronic pain.

I have been disabled for 31 yrs. I have only been in pain for about a year. It
is in my neck, upper back and shooting into my left arm. I have tried
chiropractic adjustments but he doesn't want to make me worse so he actually

I am a C 4 quadriplegic, nine years post.

I am experiencing severe pain in each of my hands which are at the extremity
of my sensitivity to touch.
I have had this problem for many years however, it is getting more severe.

I expect many of you have experienced the same condition. Have any of you
gotten any relief from medication?

I think I would be better off if both hands were amputated. I understand
this is extreme but I am desperate.

2008-05-21 Thread Quadius
I have ran into this problem a few times. One time I ended up in the
hospital because I drank too much water when I was overheated at a buccaneer
football game.

That's one of the main reasons why I limit my fluid intake during my day to
2 1/2 liters. I have low sodium and potassium so I take supplements and try
to add as much salt to my diet as I can stand.

For those of you about to ask, I have been checked for diabetes with
negative results. I just have an insatiable appetite for fluids, especially
when it's warm.
My daily intake is usually around 4 1/2 liters to 5 L, but 5 L is my
maximum.

Corie,

It sounds as though we've been down the same path. I've tried all the meds
that you've mentioned, with all the same results. I haven't had any pain
medication put into my pump since I've had it. I will inquire about the
Prialt. I've read up on it, and it sounds pretty scary, but so did some of
the other medicines that I've taken.

My Baclofen pump works very well for controlling the spasticity, but it will
be an bonus, if I can get pain medication put into my pump that actually
helps the pain. Thanks for this information. I will talk to my doctor
about it.

I have ALWAYS had a big drink jug full of water set on a table I roll under
with the straw bent right at mouth level. Right now I am using a 64 ounce
drink jug but I have smaller ones and bigger ones. 64 ounces is a great
deal (or amount) of water and it lasts me all day.

At one time I thought that no one could drink too much water without any
problems. I was wrong. One year when I was having some blood tests done...
my sodium level was down showing that I was washing out too many of the
electrolytes in my body. My doctor just suggested that I cut down a little
bit on my water intake. I was flushing out too many electrolytes that one's
body needs. If someone has problems with electrolyte balance... that can be
big-time trouble.

My problems begin about 20 minutes after going to bed. An hour of reclining
in the chair, or even just putting feet up before going to bed might lessen
the impact.

Sure sounds like AD. Have you tried elevating your head and chest? Take
something for pain and blood pressure? wrap a towel around your head? Maybe,
sit on your commode a few minutes before getting in bed to release gas build
up?
Just a suggestion. Try pain meds before getting back into bed. Give it time
to work. The move into and out of the chair causes me a lot of pain I don't
actually feel. My body does, though.

Forgot to mention. Every night when I lie down my body seems fine for about
30 minutes. Regardless how warm it is, I will be shivering while under a
mountain of blankets. I will continue to shiver for several hours until
falling asleep around 4:00am.

I feel this might have something to do with urinating but no idea what as I
have a supra-pubic. A similar period was experienced years ago but included
AD. A deposit in my penis removed resolved this for years.

Remember most quadriplegics urinate shortly after lying down. The pressure
is also more intense, so a small blockage will be amplified.

That sounds like what I'm having only mine is across my abdomen. It keeps me
awake and eventually triggers AD. Can't find the cause and it is wearing me

That sounds like what I'm having only mine is across my abdomen. It keeps me
awake and eventually triggers AD. Can't find the cause and it is wearing me
down. It's not a uti.

Remember most quadriplegics urinate shortly after lying down. The pressure
is also more intense, so a small blockage will be amplified.

For me, the pain that was described was mostly alleviated after my
gallbladder was removed.

I also had my gallbladder removed AFTER I had a stroke and was unable to
speak. After it was removed the stroke symptoms alleviated. That was insanely
scary.
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR WEIRD PAIN, IT'S YOUR BODY TELLING YOU SOMETHING IS
WRONG.

Dana For me, the pain that was described was mostly alleviated after my

That said, I admit have other neurogenic pains plus something that "seems like"
sciatica (IMO) in that it's a sharp, shooting, firey, burning pain from just
below my hip all the way down my leg. I take 900mg Neurontin plus 4mg
hydromorphone, both 3x/day. That's for the combo of other pains I get... not
that related to the gallbladder.

Best!

i get those in my mid to right belly. they do hurt and take your breath
away. i've been checked for stones and i've been having them for about 5 yrs so
 i
chalk it up to spasms. it happens most when i'm transferred from chair to
chair.

Hi Nicole, "Mr. Willis" (I forget how you sign)

Have either of you been chcked fo gallstones lately? Nicki's description
sounds just like mine when 2 stones were found... both ~3/4" diameter. Too big
to "crush" an remove them so I had laproscopic surgery to remove gallbladder
(1997-ish, I believe).

Just a thought. They used ultrasound to check kidneys and gallbladder. That's
hopw they found 'em.

2007-07-05 Thread Merrill Burghardt
When I take anti-biotics I become to feel much worse everywhere before
getting better. Your body is under attack. Just the same, tell your pain
to the doc, perhaps it is too strong. As Willis says, hang in there. You
have gotten to the right place, now let the meds work. Request time release
morphine and percaset.
