RE: [QUAD-L] New wound
Steve I have been battling a wound in the groin area for nine years now, and have just decided to live with it. Surgery was an option several years ago, but because it is in an area that has so many nerves I could not find a surgeon that wanted to take the risk. It will almost close up but then it opens up again. I did do all of the proper things like six months in bed, LOL-that wasn’t fun. The wound vacuum would not adher, so we finally just gave up and I go into the wound clinic once a month just to be monitored and get supplies. The older I get the more fragile my skin becomes. So I figure I will take it to my grave. (not my grave as I donated my body to the university medical school, so they will get to check it out) my wound does not get any better if I stay of my chair, so I am fortunate that I can still stay in the chair for the 15 hours IM up. I’m much more comfortable in my chair than in bed. I've used vetericyn hydrogel on some superficial stuff. Don't know if it would work on a deeper would. Certainly cheap enough to try soaking a sterile gauze with it and do wet to dry technique. I've been using a memory foam mattress for years. On 1/7/2016 9:19 PM, Gmail wrote: I got a new wound, over night. Bamb! Just like that. Here's what I know about treating small wounds. Start by treating with Dakin's solution, you can make it yourself. It consists of 21 parts sterile water one part Clorox bleach and a pinch of baking soda. This is much cheaper than buying it and it is the actual solution. Since you already have aQUACEL, be sure that they just lay it in the world and not pack the wound. It should be very fluffy and not tightly packed. Over packing wounds delays healing and often causes more damage. Cover the wound and try to stay off it as much as possible. True Dakin's solution is 7 parts water to one part bleach with a pinch of baking soda. This is often too strong to be used at home. Medicaid won't cover it because it is easy to make.Best Wishes, John s. RE: [QUAD-L] New wound
We have used Aquacel AG for years and it is fantastic. Good luck with your wound, that is so frustrating. Our skin just keeps getting more fragile as we get older. I ended up buying a miracle foam mattress four years ago from Amazon, and no new breakdowns since. I do not get turned at night, so I am in the same position for 9 hours, so yes I am very happy with the mattress. Bobbie, Where is your wound? Have you had a pressure sore in the same spot before? I had a pressure wound on my butt and was in bed for 6 months, before it healed. I don't want another. I sit on a Roho all the time and try to sleep on one side or the other. Do you have your skin checked often? Keep us posted of your condition. Thanks, Rose In a message dated 1/7/2016 10:20:50 P.M. i had/have a stage 4 since aug. was hooked to the vac. it started as small as the size of a pencil.got infected, went for surgery to have the wound cleaned out, came home with a crater, 4 in by 4 inches, 3/4 in deep. vac didn't help, got a bone infection. went back in to surgery the 23rd for plastic surgery, bone cut out. came out ofsurgery with skin flap and 40 staples up to my knee on the back of my leg. staples and stitches are coming out wednesday...6 weeks bedrest. then hopefully all this will be over. before surgery they also suggested oxygen chamber treatments. i think that may help with small wounds. i was exhausted trying to get it healed, the spongy dead piece of bone had to come out anyway, so they closed it. dianna My wound is only stage 2 at worst. Very sorry to hear that Bobbie. I have an Invacare alternating pressure/low air loss mattress. It works very well as far as pressure relief, but the pump is kind of loud. So, I disable the alternating pressure part and just use Low air loss. Prior to this one I had one called the Genesis Deluxe 8-inch Alternating Pressure and Low Air Loss Mattress System, it was quieter, but only lasted about 2 years. try a wound vac yet? -Original Message- From: Quad Dude <thequadd...@gmail.com> To: Gmail <bobbiehumphre...@gmail.com> Cc: Quad-list@eskimo.com <quad-list@eskimo.com> Sent: Fri, Jan 8, 2016 10:08 am Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] New wound Bobbie, My wound Dr. has been treating my wound with Aquacel AG for more than a year now. I wish I could say it was the magic bullet that worked for me, but I can't and it appears my wound is not nearly as deep as yours. In fact, he just recently switched me to a different type of bandage called Endoform dermal template which is supposed to help build a framework for new skin to heal the wound. So far, it hasn't done much better. Keep in mind that this is in spite of spending lots of time out of my chair and doing frequent pressure relief when I am in the chair. It's very frustrating… Steve - C4, 27 years On Thu, Jan 7, 2016 at 10:19 PM, Gmail <bobbiehumphre...@gmail.com> wrote: I got a new wound, over night. Bamb! Just like that. Re: [QUAD-L] New wound
My wound is only stage 2 at worst. I think wound VACs are used on wounds that are at least stage 3 or worse. Even though my wound is only stage 2, it just won't completely heal. I have discussed the possibility of surgery, i.e. skin flap, to repair the affected area, but he thinks any risk of the surgery not healing properly outweighs just living with the problem I have now. It gets so old staying out of my chair for extended days at a time, but staying in it long-term definitely makes matters worse.
