Re: [qubes-users] installation failure hen trying to instal from usb to samsung sad on lenovo 220

2018-03-30 Thread kai . froeb
Hi Marek,

I am using this tool http://www.easy2boot.com/
to create my bootable usb, it is very easy to use, you just copy one or more
iso image on the usb in the correct directory (e.g. linux or windows) and then
run a little windows cmd script and the usb is ready for use. it has an inbuilt
automatic menu, where it offers all the isos for bootng at runtime. so easy to
create, maintain and to use. and free.

However, if this realy is the case, it explains why I constantly fail to
install qubes 4 iso images with it, while all other people, using different
tools, aparently do not fail. So may be i need to use rufus or another tool
like that..

The funny thing is that it works with Qubes 3.2 installer, but not with Qubes
4.0 installer. So something must have gone worse with Qubes 4 installer,
compared to Qubes 3.2 instaler.

All the best
Kai

I'm not sure it's possible to inbound NAT broadcast traffic, have never
heard of a need for it. There's no way to change Steam to send to a
specific IP/port? The ugly hack approach would be to directly attach a
secondary NIC inside the VM you want to receive broadcast traffic but of
course, you lose a lot of layers of protection by doing that.

> Also, should I just take this to a networking forum?

Possibly, maybe some iptables wizard could figure out a way to turn that
broadcast traffic into directed.

Were you able to open it with cryptsetup? Is it showing up in /dev?

You can change the default pool in qubes-prefs, but you can't specify
different defaults based on VM type. Sounds like you might want to set the
default to your HD, and remember to specify the SSD pool when you create
templates.

The whole dispvm thing I still haven't figured out yet why it shows pending
update I guess safe to ignore in terminal their terminals it says no update.

alot of weird errors when updating with dom0 in diff scenarios. all known
already I believe. For example I installed and decided to hit whonix update
for updatevm on installer and found out fedora26 then doesn't update? all
confused. basically qubes got alot more complicated underneath too. but hey if
its for nescessary security thats why we are using it.

ended up with multiple sys-whonix lol.

is there any difference between RC5 and the final iso?

in the end its its just basically alot of refreshing qube-manager and
refreshing the state column. still better then writing script or typing in
terminal lol. miss the cpu usage was hoping for iso usage in the future. not
sure what thats about. I still consider that security. I haven't seen a
yellow triange. I feel like i should of by now haha.

and the widget hopefully will be better too. I don't mind having everything as
a widget. But I dont' mind the big window either lol.

The vm list in widget sometimes is still showing spinning icon and can't
shutdown only kill and no restart.

I mean even just knowing when to update or how to update now is a whole lot
harder for the avg computer user. its like the number 1 thing to do quickly in
my mind for the security of any system. I can go back to 3.2 but might as well
help test 4.0. I would of called it RC6 lol.

I just hope they aren't get sidetracked. Fuck what people think. Just do what
they think and noone else.

That would be amazing and much appreciated. This seems like a great hardware
choice for running Qubes. I have the tools and have flashed a BIOS chip before
so I feel okay about that part, but building the coreboot file is going to
stretch me a bit.

According to logs, "sdc4" is your installation source. Which is a bit
unusual - installer expect the image to be written to the device
directly, not one of partitions.
While the error message should definitely be improved, the problem is in
how installation USB stick is prepared.

Also, should I just take this to a networking forum?

I downloaded a tool called "alien" which was able to convert the package into RPM format

I'd suggest using a Debian template for your sys-net; It takes time to
download but its fairly simple. You may want to try using the
Debian-supplied firmware first to see if that resolves the issue:

sudo apt-get install firmware-atheros

If that's not new enough you can follow Debian directions for installing
from a newer repository (e.g. Buster).

Thanks for the tip. That's a great workaround. Impressive aspect of Qubes is
that is makes a solution like this so simply. Of course, now I need to learn
more about how to setup different sys-net and stuff like that but it's great to
have such flexibility in the OS. This is really powerful. Thanks!

The Debian 9 version of Network Manager is probably recent enough where
you can just switch sys-net's template from fedora-26 to debian-9.

Hi Holger,

I actually kinda like that Taiidan brings up these issues once in a
while. Whether or not someone agrees with them about the purism issue,
talking about this stuff on the list causes people to think more about
security/privacy, which is a good thing.

I mean yea maybe a really lengthy in depth discussion could be taken off
list, but I think conversations that aren't completely strictly on topic
(security/privacy in general, or free/libre hardware, instead of
qubes-specific) can be good because it gets people thinking about these
issues.

And your thoughts on thunderbird would be useful too, not everyone has
to agree :)

[qubes-users] How to change default pool for app-vms in R4

Hi,
I have a small SSD for the templates and a large HD for the app-vms.
I found this on how to configure secondary storage:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/secondary-storage/

But I didn't figure out how to set the secondary storage as the default for
app-vms. How can this be done?
Ideally, the new templates would still be created on the SSD by default.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Yea it looks like a 4.0/whonix 14 specific issue, the qubes v3 repo
works fine for me in 3.2.

[qubes-users] Qubes No Longer Recognizes External Monitors

2018-03-30 Thread mpenterprises . org
System:
-Qubes current (4.0rc5 - I guess it's just 4.0 Stable now?)
-Thinkpad P70 with Skylake i7
-Kernel Flags: i915.alpha_support=1 rd.blacklist.drivers=nouveau
nouveau.modeset=0
-Bios:
--USB UEFI BIOS Support: Enabled
--UEFI/Legacy Boot: UEFI Only
--Secure Boot: Disabled

Previously: 4.0rc4 installed
-Plug in External Monitor via HDMI or MiniDP
-XFCE Display manager launches and external displays are configurable
-Displays show up in Display Manager and xrandr

Now: Fresh Install of Qubes 4.0rc4, applied qubes updates to get 4.0rc5/4.0
Stable
-Plug in External Monitor via HDMI or MiniDP
-Qubes Display manager launches
-No monitors are available except built-in are available on Display Manager
-xrandr shows only built-in monitor

Any ideas how I can get my external monitors back?

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. That's a great workaround. Impressive aspect of Qubes is
that is makes a solution like this so simply. Of course, now I need to learn
more about how to setup different sys-net and stuff like that but it's great to
have such flexibility in the OS. This is really powerful. Thanks!

These are legitimate gripes. But I'd suggest continuing with Qubes 3.2

I just imported the two keys. The version 4 signing key came back with "no
ultimately trusted keys found". Is that an issue?

Its not an immediate issue if you've just taken steps to check the
Master key (as described). However, the verifying-signatures doc
explains how to edit the Master key to set the trust level... its just
an indicator from you saying "I trust this key" and that should make the
"no ultimately trusted keys found" message go away. I didn't include it
in my howto because it has a bug that can forget the setting.

I am running it through budgie ubuntu. I currently have no qubes system
installed. Am I doing this right?

Sounds OK.

I installed gpg2 in ubuntu to run this commands through terminal

I'm going by Debian's gpg setup, which only includes version 2 and both
'gpg' and 'gpg2' are the same command. But other distros still include
gpg 1.x so I found its better to always specify gpg2.

[qubes-users] notifications of updates pending?

2018-03-30 Thread cooloutac
I assumed 4.0 would have some pop up in task bar. Seems like there is no
update notifications in the tray widget, and qubes manager is very unreliable
constantly showing updates pending when there is none.

I don't think this is good for security. Even the most pro user will forget to
update once in a while, and it would be a real pain to constantly check for
updates manuually on every single template for people that have many.

Am I missing something?

yes, actually looks like dom0's update setting is totally separate so its
probably using tor. https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3527

Not sure about whonix templates itself though? I guess I have to check that
proxy file again.

According to another github i can't find right now, doesn't look like fedora
will be able to update over tor any time soon using whonix. But according to
the github above each template can use a specific updatevm in 4.0.

Also now my custom dvm is constantly showing updates pending in qubes manager.
Once i update the template used for the dvm template, it constantly shows
update pending.

Taiidan, this is the qubes-users mailing list, ment to discuss issues
and joys with Qubes OS. Whatever you think of Purism is really not
suited that well on this list. If you want to educate people, I'd like
to suggest you take it elsewhere, either private or some other public
list or setup a wiki page or whatever.

If everybody beats up their favorite horse on this list, this list
will become a lot more noisy and less useful for everyone. For example I
don't think using Thunderbird for reading email is a reasonable choice
for users interested in reasonable security, but I wont mention that in
every (not even any...) thread discussing thunderbird. Same can be said
about many many topics.

Thanks for consideration.

The reason things break and you need to re-compile every time you

because
they make an effort to slow down the nouveau project and in the
case
of their brand new cards entirely block it via hardware code
signing
enforcement and not even providing any firmware blobs.

There are a variety of single slot half height low power AMD
cards but
if you want something newer the only choice is the more expensive

professional series with a fan - the WX4100 for instance is half
height but not passively cooled.

You can obtain a 54xx passively cooled card for around $30-50 but
that
is a quite old chipset (although you can install openradeonbios
on it)

Ok, 4.0 Qubes is out so I am more motivated than ever before. I
took a look at the WX4100 which looks fantastic, but perhaps is more
than I need (and more than I can afford).

It is a sexy card right?

*gorgeous*, like gfx card pr0n :)

I too saw the pretty blue color and it was
love at first sight xD even though I know that is an overpriced card.
I don't suggest buying an overpriced card like the 4100 just because
it is single slot/half height or w/e I would instead get a 5450 unless
you absolutely need something better.

I can certainly do with less, like I said I am not looking for bleeding
edge.

I can do without the passively cooled part, esp if it will bring the
price down a bit (I am hoping for something in the low 100s USD).

Yeah it willyou aren't intending for gaming right? I would get a
5450 or 5470 they come in passively cooled and half height.

Nope, no gaming, just multiple monitors photo editing, occasional video
encoding etc

In terms of requirements, I suppose (to simplify things) the main
criteria I have are low 100s USD, low profile, and at least two
ports, though 4 would like the WX4100 would of course be awesome. I
am totally open to used, and am not looking for bleeding edge.

 Get a 5450 for $30 bucks I sugg

Thanks (very much) for that. That is def a sweet spot in terms of price.
Because I can't leave good enough alone 8O I started looking around for
something similar, that was AMD, and had the ports I was hoping for
(instead of buying cables like hdmi 2 DVI etc).
I found the AMD-Radeon-HD-6570
(https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-AMD-Radeon-HD-6570-1GB-DDR3-PCIe-x16-DP-DVI-Video-Card-637184-001-637997-001/232686259800?hash=item362d2e8e58:g:JfIAAOSwY~1Z86qr)
which conveniently has DP and DVI (not HDMI or VGA). Thoughts? (thanks
for your patience/help!)

Yes, see https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3660. A workaround
is to use command line or Qube Manager instead if needed.

[qubes-users] Qubes Domains.py Widget Seems Wedged

2018-03-30 Thread William Bormann

I'm seeing an oddity with this widget. At random, some VMs show the update
indicator as continuously spinning. It appears to show a VM always starting,
but qvm-ls in dom0 shows the VM as started. In a nutshell, the widget seems to
be unsure of the VM's state.

Anyone else seeing this? Is there a workaround/fix I can try?

Oh, I am running Qubes 4.0.

I use the motherboard BIOS legacy ROM and it works on 3.2 version so I was
expecting it to work on the 4 version. May be I should try with a PCI card.

That's cos Windows dumps hidden data onto the disk, so naturally it fails the
Qubes verification.
I'm gonna buy some blank DVD's and give it a try with your parameters. Thanks
for the advice.

Curious are you using real hardware RAID via a PCI-e card or
on-motherboard module (eg: SAS2008) or the SoftRAID option presented via
a BIOS option ROM?

Thanks for your answer. I will try that. I dont understand why Anaconda see the
disk during installation, but Qubes OS 4 does not see the disk after
installation. It does not make sense. :/
