legacy.

Didn't get to far with troubleshooting. I got a shell, was able to decrypt the
volume, but not sure wha to do next.

[qubes-users] 4.0 wouldn't boot after update

2018-04-25 Thread Jon Solworth
I updated qubes 4.0 and there were some errors (about transactions on--I
believe--some crypto stuff). Afterwards, I couldn't boot getting the message

kernel panic -- not syncing: VFS unable to mount fs on unknown block (0,0)

the problem is that my backup is a bit old, and if possible I would like to
retrieve the data. So:

  1. Is there a way to restore the kernel to a working one? or alternatively
  2. If I build qubes on an external disk, is there a way to copy over the
 files from my SSD?
  3. Any other suggestions.

(I tried to use troubleshooting with a 4.0 usb stick, but couldn't figure out
how to recover).

thanks

Andrew, now that the schedule for 4.0rc4 is out, it would be good to know what
work remains to be done before 4.0 can be replaced. I would (and I'm sure the

Your question about whether it works is really three different questions:
  1. Can qubes support 3 monitors?
  2. Can qubes support 4k?
  3. Can qubes support different resolution.

I don't know the answer to 1, although I can affirm it definitely supports 2;
note that there may be limitations with the frame buffer size but X supports
multiple graphics cards.
In response to 2, it works well on a 4k display (I'm typing it on it now).
In response to 3, X thinks all your displays have the same density, i.e.,
dots per inch. If you don't, it may be painful if you want to avoid tiny
or gigantic type. If you search this group you'll get some help for this
problem.

Qubes 4rc2 works pretty well, but its not quite there yet (hence the rc3
schedule). I wouldn't expect data loss to be a low probability event.

If it is not ready for general use, than I would not want to rely on its
security.

[qubes-users] 4.0rc2 debian template issue

2017-10-28 Thread Jon Solworth
When install Qubes 4.0rc2, I accidentally hit configure twice. (The second time
it errored out). The result is that there is no debian template.

I tried to install debian-9, (sudo qubes-dom0-update qubes-template-debian-9),
but have others have pointed out that template is not working.

I tried to reinstall debian-8. (sudo qubes-dom0-update qubes-template-debian-8)
This was unsuccessful, even after doing: sudo yum remove qubes-template-debian-8
which returned an error.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

thanks,
Jon

I don't see any rush on releasing Qubes, it does after all have as its primary
goal security, not release dates.

There is, however, a need to enable current hardware to run qubes. It would be
great if a 3.2 unstable installer was available to enable kernels which work
with current chipsets.

Is there anything available like this?

[qubes-users] Tip: Multimedia buttons under i3

2016-12-29 Thread Jon Solworth
I'm at Chaos Computer Congress, and Qubes has a table. I got some help from
them with the multimedia buttons for i3. Specifically, I configured the
brightness and sound controls, but not the multimedia player controls because
the player is not in Dom0 (where the i3 exec runs)

To get this working in dom0 install some software:

sudo qubes-dom0-update pulseaudio-utils
sudo qubes-dom0-update xbacklight

Then add the following lines to .config/i3

# Pulse Audio controls
bindsym XF86AudioRaiseVolume exec --no-startup-id pactl set-sink-volume 1 +5%
#increase sound volume
bindsym XF86AudioLowerVolume exec --no-startup-id pactl set-sink-volume 1 -5%
#decrease sound volume
bindsym XF86AudioMute exec --no-startup-id pactl set-sink-mute 1 toggle # mute
sound

# Sreen brightness controls
bindsym XF86MonBrightnessUp exec xbacklight -inc 20 # increase screen
brightness
bindsym XF86MonBrightnessDown exec xbacklight -dec 20 # decrease screen
brightness

that's it,
Jon

2016-09-29 Thread Jon Solworth
Another documentation issue:

On the qubes i3 page, https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/
the Configuration at the bottom of the page is unnecessary.
i3-settings-qubes package does those steps automatically.

Suggestion is to get rid of that section altogether.

[qubes-users] Re: i3

2016-09-22 Thread Jon Solworth
Apparently, the configuration at the bottom of https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/
are unnecessary if you install i3-settings-qubes. You should do that before
running i3, if you haven't remove .config/i3 in dom0 and then rerun. In
addition to customizing terminal generation, and fixing up the scripts, it also
provides a qubes specific status bar.

I'm not a big fan of dmenu. I did build a mode switch ($mod+p) for starting
programs in various VMs; probably build another mode switch for starting a
terminal in various VMs.

I used an external monitor in addition to notebook screen so I created an extra
10 workspace (using the function keys).

[qubes-users] i3

2016-09-19 Thread Jon Solworth
I'm using i3, and I like it so far better than
kde or xfce, but its definitely not the window
manager to start using qubes with.

I have some questions

1. https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/ is very helpful,
but I'm a bit confused by the configuration instructions
at the bottom. It says to install a script qubes_autostart_xdg.sh
   but it doesn't say
 (a) in which domain
 (b) in which directory
 (c) what filename should be used
(It would also be helpful to know what the script is needed for)

2. What should I use to launch individual applications from the status
bar (e.g., keypassx or firefox)? I'll make key bindings for some,
but I'll want others on the bar. These are security sensitive,
aren't they, since they run in dom0?

3. Is there a recommended way of bringing up VMs? I'm using qvm-start
for the VM, and .config/autostart for applications I always want to
started in the VM. Any better suggestions?

4. nm_applet seems to sometimes go away. Any suggestions?

5. I would be pleased to see other peoples config files.

thanks,
Jon

[qubes-users] Network selection

2016-08-28 Thread Jon Solworth
NetworkManager apparently selects which network to connect
to based on most recently connected network. This policy is
really unfortunate.

At my university, I connect to my lab's WiFi and when I'm
out of range to my University's WiFi. My notebook can also
see eduroam, an inter-University roaming facility. But these
networks have different policies, in regards to firewall and
bandwidth limits.

I want to prioritize access points to lab first, university second,
and eduroam third.

Is there a way to do this?
