Wow, nice find! Thanks, I missed that.

[qubes-users] Why is sys-net talking to shed.galexander.org ?

2019-07-13 Thread drokmed
I installed debian-10-minimal template, installed minimal apps to use for
sys-net, added iftop, then set sys-net to use minimal template.

Almost immediately upon starting sys-net (and nothing else), open an xterm and
run iftop, sys-net repeatedly talks to shed.galexander.org

What's up with this?

Interesting. I don't have that problem. I did get some other error messages
the first time I ran sudo qubes-dom0-update, something about can't delete local
files, but it hasn't done it again.

Okay now it's not doing it. Pretty sure I stopped/restarted everything the

[qubes-users] My Qubes 4.02-rc1 install notes: (with fixes, customizations)

2019-07-11 Thread drokmed
My Qubes 4.02-rc1 install notes: (with fixes, customizations)

d/l ISO from qubes website
burned to usb flash drive
boot usb flash drive
tried media test, it crashed after a few seconds and rebooted pc
install qubes
accept most defaults
change time zone
use full hd/ssd (reclaim all space)
assign user name
install finishes, reboot and continue setup
create default system qubes (net, fw, dvm)
do not create default apps, I'll make my own
create whonix gw and ws vm's, should stop doing this, I create my own
do not enable updating whonix over tor
no usb cube, I use usb keyboard and usb mouse
(note to self: try the advanced option some day, to see what it does)
click on finish configuration
wait a minute before login, let background processes finish
login
watch hard disk light, and upper right screen for messages
wait a few minutes, let background stuff run, watching hard disk light
INSTALLATION COMPLETE

Custom configure my Qubes installation:

fix clock, right click->properties, change format
noticed hard disk light still going, wait a few minutes, go get some coffee
(qubes is looking for template updates)

Update Qubes templates:
NOTE: Do NOT reboot before updating Qubes templates, or system may hang during
shutdown

start Qube Manager:
click on right blue Q->open qube manager
note: you will see TWO qubes auto-start: sys-net and sys-firewall (we haven't
configured sys-whonix yet)

update dom0:
right click dom0->update qube, install any updates, wait for it to finish (got
progress screen but no finish screen, it should say no updates are available)

update Debian-10 template:
start Debian-10 template, then update qube, install any updates, wait for finish
note: debian-10 gives repository errors, press ctrl-C to close window (don't
shutdown template)
click on right blue Q, debian-10, run terminal
in terminal: sudo apt-get --allow-releaseinfo-change update (gets error
messages)
run it again: sudo apt-get --allow-releaseinfo-change update (no error
messages)
close terminal
right click debian-10->update qube, install any updates (continue=Y), OK on
grub-pc prompt (right arrow then enter), don't install grub not needed in
template (tab then enter), yes continue without grub, when done enter to
shutdown

update Fedora-30 template:
start Fedora-30 template, update qube, install any updates (Y), wait for
finish, enter to shutdown

update whonix templates:
note: updating whonix templates requires sys-whonix to be running (in current
configuration)
start sys-whonix, popup window select Connect click next, summary screen click
next, wait for bootstrap to finish (hit back arrow if it stalls too long and do
again), click finish
wait a few minutes, will get popup connected to tor, then whonixcheck will run,
wait for finish, should get popup info: whonix APT reposity enabled
note: if whonixcheck failed, wait a minute, run it again: LEFT blue Q->Service:
sys-whonix->WhonixCheck (this must succeed before updating templates)

start whonix-gw-15 template, update qube, install any updates (Y), wait for
finish, enter to shutdown
start whonix-ws-15 template, update qube, install any updates (Y), wait for
finish, enter to shutdown

UPDATES DONE!
We can now safely shutdown or reboot. Do that now.
Far right upper button (your user name) click on name, shutdown
While pc is off, you can safely remove the USB flash drive now, if not already

Boot computer
at login wait a minute to let background stuff run (watch hd light), then login
note: i've noticed if you wait a minute before login, as soon as you login,
qubes will immediately connect to tor (no wait period)

Start Qubes Manager:
note: you will see there are now THREE qubes auto-starting: sys-net,
sys-firewall, sys-whonix (we configured it)

>From this point, the rest is custom configuration. Your preferences will be
>different from mine. I'll list some of my tweaks.

Change colors:
note: I frikken HATE the default red network icon, it looks like it's shouting
ERROR! to me ugh
note: we have to stop sys-net to change the color, but must also stop
sys-firewall and sys-whonix first
stop sys-whonix
stop sys-firewall
stop sys-net

sys-net->Qube settings->change color->BLACK, apply, ok (I like black because
it's now same color as other icons on bar)
sys-firewall->Qube settings->change color->RED, apply, ok (I like red because
any VM connecting directly is going out clearnet)

Get rid of dvm's: (do we really need all these?)
note: I create a new default-dvm, set all vm/template/system to it, then delete
the others

create a new cube:
either click on 'create a new cube' button or Qube->Create new cube
name: default-dvm, color: black, template: Debian-10, networking: NONE! (don't
want this thing accessing anything)
default-dvm->Qube settings->Advanced->turn on 'Allow starting DisposableVMs
from this qube'
System->Global settings->Default DispVM->default-dvm
note: while in this screen, change default template too
System->Global settings->Default

Nope. I created a templatebasedappvm, started it, tried to install something
temporarily (forgot to add to original template vm, and didn't want to go thru
the long process of shutting down current, starting template, installing app,
stopping template, restarting vm, resuming work).

Gets the same error. Have to apply temp fix to any vm created from template.
Not a big deal, but annoying enough for me to replace Debian-10.

Sadly, this isn't going to work. Sure, you can add the command to the
template, and then the template updates okay, but after that, every time you
create a new VM from the template, each VM has the problem again. The template
needs to be fixed, and I'm sure they will.

In the mean time, I will delete Debian-10, install Debian-9 template, clone to
Debian-10, and do a manual update. That will give a better fix for now.

Still testing. Whonix gw/ws appear to be fine, but I haven't done much with
those yet. More to come.

Confirmed. I just reached that point. Downloaded the new ISO, installed okay.
 Updated each template okay.

BTW the above error no longer occurs with the whonix templates. They seem to
be fixed now. That's good.

Also FYI: The Debian-10 error can be avoided by first installing Debian-9,
then manually upgrading it to Debian-10.

My bad, they didn't drop them, but they removed them from the toolbar. You
have to go into preferences, to add them back to the toolbar.

Dumb idea they would take them off the toolbar, but that's just me I guess.

Actually, the "sudo qubesctl state.sls qvm.anon-whonix" gave me a bunch of
errors, so I did it the old fashioned way, which worked:

sudo qubes-dom0-update --action=install qubes-template-whonix-gw-15

That worked fine.

THIS is what I needed. I wish we could fix it so we don't need to do this, but
for now, this works too.

BTW the Debian-10 template has the same update problem. I got around it by
cloning Debian-9 to Debian-10 and upgraded from there. No update problems.

I suspect hundreds, if not thousands of journalists use Qubes. They've made
more than one youtube video. I get your point though, support sites sure are

Giving up trying to run tor on qubes.

whonix-gw-14 no longer updates, and I got the whonix-gw-15 installed, but it
doesn't update either.

Saw something about a jinja file mentioned in a couple comments here, but no
mention of it on the whonix installation instructions. Don't know where it is,
and wouldn't know what to do with it if I found it.

I'm glad you veterans knee deep in testing here got it working, but for us new

I know this is the least of your problems right now, but since you mentioned
it, I often had this problem after a fresh install, and finally figured out
what is was. If Qubes is aware of available updates, sometimes it refuses to
shut down. I literally had to yank the power cord, and remove the laptop
battery.

After a fresh install, it is a good idea to one by one, manually update each
and every cube, starting with dom0, of course. Then it will shut down.

Normally, I do a reboot after installing an OS, but not with Qubes. It wants
those updates first, I guess. I may be wrong, but this works for me.

For multimedia, I use the Qubes Debian Multimedia qube:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/multimedia/

It uses google chrome, which by default, comes with all codecs and multimedia
stuff installed. I use it for youtube mainly, but any multimedia site should
work fine with it.

Actually, I found an easier way. The way it should be, really.

>From dom0 terminal:

sudo qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-templates-community --action=install
qubes-template-whonix-gw-15

sudo qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-templates-community --action=install
qubes-template-whonix-ws-15

Works fine here. Can't upgrade from Qube Manager, but can upgrade manually
from a terminal:

sudo apt-get-update-plus dist-upgrade

When a new template comes out, should be easy to upgrade to, or at a minimum,
just remove, then install new one. I'll stick with these for now. Works.

Followed the instructions, removed ALL whonix stuff.

To install new version, you run:

sudo qubesctl state.sls qvm.anon-whonix

All that did was re-install all of the whonix-14 stuff I just removed. Back to
where I started.

No, it was officially released by WHONIX, not by Qubes. I'm sure the Qubes

Honestly, I'm surprised whonix went ahead and released a major upgrade, on a
new Debian version that is still frozen, and hasn't been released yet. Maybe
they jumped the gun. I would have waited.

Unless you want to join the testing efforts, I would wait until Qubes releases

Updating whonix-ws-14:

I take it this is because whonix-15 has been released, but we don't have a new

Just curious, now that fedora-30 is officially here.

Like many, I'm a Debian fan, been using it forever, so would love to see a
switch to Debian.

I just installed fedora-30 template and checked it out. Looks good, no
problems.

I also cloned debian-9 to debian-10 and upgraded to Buster. Works fine too.
I'm eager to upgrade whonix's too.

I guess 2019 is the year Qubes gets major OS upgrades.

That problem was fixed earlier in the week. There was a kernel that gave some
users problems. For me, because of my old ATI Radeon video card.

That kernel was pulled from stable, back on Monday??? All is fine for me now.

Did you get a kernel update? Are you having problems? Good time to learn how

I found it easier to create a desktop icon to launch something I frequently use.

If you manually create a menu item, but something changes, like renaming the
VM, it breaks the menu item. Then you have to track down where you manually
made changes again.

I found the page that shows you and others working on it:

https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/4934

If I recall correctly, that fixed version is pushed to testing. The update I
saw in stable is gone again, and I'm running the current 4.14.119-2 for dom0.

Everything is working now. Thanks for following up :)

[qubes-users] dom0 kernel 4.19.43-1 update a fix for ATI Radeon cards, or the original?

2019-05-29 Thread drokmed
On Saturday morning, dom0 had a kernel update 4.19.43-1 which broke Qubes for
people with older ATI Radeon cards. It was temporarily pulled.

I see the same kernel is now back in the updates repository. Is this the same
kernel which breaks ATI Radeon cards? Or is it a different kernel, that fixes
the ATI Radeon breaking issue.

I am afraid to install the update. If it is the same kernel (it is same
number) it will break my Qubes install again. I am not looking forward to
going thru all of that again. I checked on the open issues page, and didn't
see any info on this update, one way or the other. If I missed it, I
apologize. I'm fairly new to Qubes and still learning how support works.

Thanks

I see the new kernel is back in the dom0 repository, same name/version, no idea
if it's a fix or the original.

I spent the whole weekend getting my laptop working again, not ready to break
it again. I'll hold off a few days on this one. Work to do.

Whonix updating/working fine here. Maybe try creating a new sys-whonix2 VM
from the template, and switch to it.

Kernel updates and/or Xen updates for dom0 are considered major.

Basically, you should update all other qubes as you normally would, but when it
says there are dom0 updates, check them out first.

>From Qubes Manager:

dom0 -> Upgrade qube

It will download updates, but before installing, will show you what they are,
and ask if you want to install. If you see kernel and/or xen updates, it's
always a good idea of cancelling the update, and do a backup first. And check
here for problems too.

I'll join the testing.

I was reading about those testing repositories yesterday. Now that I'm used to
doing reinstalls :) I might as well try it out. That's what backups are for.

However, one of my backups failed to restore, errors. I'm hoping when they
upgrade the qubes backup/restore software, they can improve reliability and
fault recovery. It's a shame that one error prevents the rest of the restore.
Now I'm going to start backing up each qube separately, making many small
backups, and run verify every time. There's got to be a better way.

It's working fine now. They had a new kernel that doesn't like old ATI Radeon
video cards. The kernel was removed from updates.

Hopefully in the future, somebody will make sure the kernel doesn't break the
old video cards again.

[qubes-users] Just did fresh install + all updates = everything working fine

2019-05-26 Thread drokmed
Thanks to everyone who helped troubleshoot the latest dom0 kernel update issue.
Everything seems to be working just fine.

Fresh install uses kernel 4.14.74-1, and a full update takes it to 4.14.119-2.
Both working fine.

I hope the next kernel update doesn't break systems that have the old ATI
Radeon video cards. Fingers crossed, we shall see.

[qubes-users] [Dom0] Houston, we have a problem...

2019-05-26 Thread drokmed
Can't launch Qubes Global settings window. I get:

[Dom0] Houston, we have a problem...

Whoops. A critical error has occured. This is most likely a bug in Qubes
Global Settings application.

TypeError: setChecked(self, bool): argument 1 has unexpected type 'str' at line
248 of file global_settings.py.

I had tried to turn off checking for updates, both dom0 updates, and all
updates. It refused to let me turn off checking all updates. I would turn it
off and save it, but after reboot, it was turned back on again.

I made those changes after a fresh install, but before upgrading dom0. I
wonder what else got broken. Maybe I should just wipe the drive and start all
over again. One more time after all of this is just par for the course. Then
again, I might as well wait until there is a fix for the current kernel not
liking my Radeon card.

I agree the qubes backup/restore is easier. I learned the lesson of don't make
any changes to system templates like Debian-9, because you can't backup/restore
them. I'm trying to keep the number of qubes down to just one screen full in
Qubes Manager, which gets hard quickly.

I'll either have to start creating a bunch of extra templates, or start writing
down any changes I make. I'll probably just write down the changes, then lose
that piece of paper DOH!

Yes, please pull 4.19.43-1 kernel update, if possible. Would solve my problem.

I was curious if it was the kernel, or the xfce and lightdm, so I tried a fresh
install, and when done, reboots fine. Then I didn't update anything, but I did
switch over to kde/sddm with fingers crossed, hoping that was it. No such
luck. I updated dom0 only, then after reboot, the same ole problem. Computer
boots all the way up to the point of login, then when using kde, just appears
to stop. PC not locked up, can still toggle numlock and capslock, but
ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, have to press power button, then pc shuts down on
it's own.

I have an older ATI Radeon card too:

(ATI) now called AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5870
on an Intel ASUS G73Jh 213 laptop

It's not the AMD cpu for me, I have Intel.

I can still get in, booting new Xen 4.8.5-6 with old kernel 4.14.74 (from fresh
install).

[qubes-users] qubes backup and restore question

2019-05-25 Thread drokmed
What is the point of backing up a qube, if you can't restore to it?

I'm restoring a full backup, and instead of restoring to qubes, it's creating
new ones with different names. WTF!

What the hell am I supposed to do now? Delete the original qubes, and rename
the restores? I'm guessing that will break a bunch of links, which I'll have
to manually fix. Am I the only person that thinks this is totally stupid?

And it says the restored dom0 files are located in some other directory. What
the hell am I supposed to do with that? Dom0 can't be restored? Are you
kidding me?

It's a good thing I gave up drinking when my brother died. I definitely need a
drink right about now. This is maddening.

Re: [qubes-users] WARNING: don't update qubes, will break your install

2019-05-25 Thread drokmed
Yes, that worked. I'm back to a fresh install.

I didn't know we could do that. Damn, I was a little hasty formatting my
drive. That's okay, I didn't lose much.

If I try upgrading again, it will break again. Maybe whatever fedora broke
will get fixed in the coming weeks. I don't like the idea of running without
updates.

I can restore backups to last week, then just wait and see if any fixes come
out.

I did a full backup a week ago. I think I'll do another fresh install, then
restore it to last week.

I lost a week's worth of work. That's what I get for slacking on backups.

I'll have to hold off on ANY updates, until I hear something on this issue.

I just noticed on the Fedora forums they released Fedora 30 today.

Qubes runs Fedora 29, so I don't know if today's updates had anything to do
with f30, but it might be related. Checking to see if anyone else on fedora
forums has similar issue as mine.

[qubes-users] WARNING: don't update qubes, will break your install

2019-05-25 Thread drokmed
I just finished a fresh install of Qubes, then updated dom0, fedora template,
debian template, whonix gw and ws templates, as per instructions on

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/installation-guide/

Shutdown, boot.

Qubes won't let me login. Same problem as in my other post.

[qubes-users] qubes updater broken? just had to re-install qubes

2019-05-25 Thread drokmed
Don't know if anyone else had this problem yet today.

Booted my computer this morning, Qubes 4 fully updated, been using for months,
apply updates every day.

Today, I noticed lots of updates. Dom0 had both kernel and Xen updates, so did
all the other qubes.

I let the normal Qubes Updater do it's thing, updating each cube. It completed
fine, or so I thought. I noticed that several qubes didn't shutdown quite
right, click on the right Q button, they were still there, but showed zero
memory usage. I tried shutting them down manually, but nothing happened.
Qubes Manager reported they were shut down.

I decided to do a normal shutdown, which went fine.

When it booted back up, enter disk password, seems to boot up normally, as soon
as gets to screen for user login, screen flashes back and forth between text
install mode and gui mode. Kept cycling, and hard disk light blinks each time.
Let it run for a while, hoping it would change, but no luck. Did a
ctrl-alt-del and it does proper shutdown/reboot, but comes back up with same
problem.

Reformatting it now. Good thing I did recent backup to USB stick.

Maybe it was just my bad luck, lets hope so. Today, I re-learned the value of
backups.

If you are reading this... backup recently?
