Yes, i3 works very well with multiple monitors. I use my notebook in three
different configurations, standalone, dual (with a large external monitor) and
clone (hdmi same as screen).

i3 does layout to use the whole screen, partitioning as necessary. In my dual
configuration, each screen is managed separately. You can pair screens
independently, one on the notebook and one on the external display. You can
reconfigure between the two using xrandr.

As for the package availability, I beleive there is still a kde package
as well - what I am hoping to learn (maybe I should ask on the dev list?
really dont want to distract them though) is the "long term
availability" of i3. It seems like kde might not be offered in the

win manager one might want, I prefer to go with what the community is
supporting as I wouldn't trust myself to properly securely install
another winman myself.

Ah Great, I haven't realized that it's in stable repository.
We should update the documentation in https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/

Hello!

What version of Qubes are you running?

I installed i3 directly through "sudo qubes-dom0-update i3" and that resolved
fine. Even the patched settings too.

So it should be in stable already.

Hi,

not at all. config file taken from /home/dom0user/.config/i3/config

The only line I changed from the default setup is:
# start dmenu (a program launcher)
bindsym $mod+d exec --no-startup-id i3-dmenu-desktop --dmenu="dmenu -i -nb #d2d2d2
-nf #00 -sb #63a0ff"

where I added the "-i" option.

I also added the /usr/bin/qubes-i3status bash script.

I changed

local qubes=$(qvm-ls 2>/dev/null | grep ' \* ' | wc -l)
to
local qubes=$(qvm-ls 2>/dev/null | grep 'Running ' | wc -l)

and
local disk=`df -h / | tail -n 1 | awk '{print $4}'`
to
local disk=`sudo lvs --noheadings -o lv_size,data_percent /dev/mapper/qubes_dom0-pool00 |
perl -pe 's/\s*([0-9.]+)([a-zA-Z]*)\s+([0-9.]+).*/sprintf("%.1f%s", ($1 * (100

Both are attached.

Same problem for me, but I haven't found a solution. Using Qubes 4rc4 but i3 is
not working like it has under Qubes 3.2.

Anyone else using i3 under Q4rc4?

Hi,

yes I use i3 under Q4rc4 without any issues or problems.
(Only thing I added/changed is case insensitivity for dmenu with -i option and
changed the qube count command and the free disk space command in i3status)
Besides that, it worked out of the box for me (following the provided
instructions concerning i3 on qubes).
I use Qubes4rc4 on two maschines, both work without a flaw concerning i3.

Florian

My dmenu is broken, for starters. Dmenu only shows dom0 applications, so I
cannot start anything that way.
When I run qvm-run to start something, I can see that my VM is started (with
qvm-ls) and I can hear my CPU responding (as in it starts fanning), but nothing

2016-09-22 Thread Jon Solworth
Apparently, the configuration at the bottom of https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/
are unnecessary if you install i3-settings-qubes. You should do that before
running i3, if you haven't remove .config/i3 in dom0 and then rerun. In
addition to customizing terminal generation, and fixing up the scripts, it also
provides a qubes specific status bar.

I'm not a big fan of dmenu. I did build a mode switch ($mod+p) for starting
programs in various VMs; probably build another mode switch for starting a
terminal in various VMs.

I used an external monitor in addition to notebook screen so I created an extra
10 workspace (using the function keys).

Not sure where all the i3 users are...

1. I'm not sure of the official answer needless to say, but there's a few
ways in which it could be done.
   a) presumably in dom0 as that's where i3 is
   b) depends how you want to run it, systemd unit or profile script?
   c) same as b

2. You use demenu to launch apps? It's typically bound to $mod+d by default.

3. By starting an application from dmenu, it will start the vm. Alternatively
you can use the qubes manager to do it with clicking.

4. It went away on first few runs, but it seems to be fine now. Perhaps start a
bug ticket if this is an issue you're having?

5. I can post up my config but it's very stock other than removing anything
using the arrow keys. (vim keybindings are fine thanks)

[qubes-users] Re: i3-configs?

2016-06-16 Thread jkitt
I would share mine but it's pretty much the default. There's not really
much to tinker with in i3 because it's pretty headless. I was going to
write some scripts to place some VM info in the bar at the bottom but I
haven't got round to it yet - I will no doubt post them in this group when
I do.
