[RBW] Re: Linda Blair's Wheel set?
Before you attempt cassette carrier (the body) replacement, try turning the cogs around and pedal on the other side of the teeth. The UG cogs are twist teeth and are symmetrical. You can't do this with the smallest cog but you can with all the others. Sheldon tells about this somewhere in his writings. On Jun 14, 2009, at 10:22 AM, carnerda...@bellsouth.net wrote: http://tinyurl.com/lrhk3q Sounds like you may need to replace the body. Above is a link to Sheldon Brown's article on Shimano cassettes and freehubs. Gets sort of complicated with early D-A hubs. Bruce wrote:Let me say first off, yes, I bought these wheels on Ebay. Anyway, they're Synergy rims laced up on some older D-A hubs. The rear is a Uniglide and has a 7 speed cassette of unknown provenance affixed. For the price paid, I really am not too upset, although the seller (who works for a bike coop and should know better) got several items wrong in his write up. When I emailed on the matter, he said, Oh, I never took them out of the box to look at them when I bought them from the prior owner. After truing the front (the rear was good) I took the bike on a shakedown today and found that the 15 cog (the 2d smallest) has a habit of freewheeling when it is used and any appreciable pressure is put on the pedals. No problems on the 17 up to the 28, and only a slight catch detected on the 12 cog. It's kind of like a neck rotating when I go uphill on the 15. Any Uniglide users out there with ideas? Do I look for another cassette? TIA --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Installing a Tubus Luna rack
Wayne has excellent prices and service, judging from my one encounter with him. I mounted my last two Flys without bothering to use the steel tab; I just bent the aluminum strut in a vise. And, the strut will slide considerably into and out of its containing rack tube, so I didn't find it necessary to trim it. How does the Luna compare to the Fly? On Mon, Jun 8, 2009 at 10:43 AM, 40_Acres mgla...@gmail.com wrote: I've wanted to install a narrow-profile, pannier-compatible rack like the Tubus Fly or Luna for commuting on my AHH, but was worried about fitment with that mono-stay. It seemed like a shame to let those seat stay braze-ons go to waste, and bending and cutting the mono-stay to fit was pretty intimidating. I bought a Luna from Wayne at TheTouringStore.com (who is great, by the way), and then stared at it for a couple of weeks. I considered bringing it to one of the local bike shops, but then last night I just went for it. Installation wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. The rack comes with a steel tab that you can use to bridge the aluminum mono-stay to the rear brake bolt. This tab comes slightly pre-bent, so it's easy to finish the job. I clamped it in a vice by the wide end, and pounded the narrow end to 90 degrees. Easy. I then unbolted the rear brake, removed the last aluminum spacer (behind the thin fender mount), and replaced it with the 90 degree tab. Then I mounted the rack to the second set of eyelets on the rear dropouts (using the included black aluminum spacers to avoid interfering with the fender stays), tilted the rack level, and kind of eye-balled what how much the aluminum mono-stay would have to be bent and cut. I took off about 4 inches with a hacksaw, clamped resized mono-stay in the vice, and bent it. Held it up to the rack / 90 degree tab, then clamped it in the vice again and bent it a little more. Perfect. I sanded the edges of the cut stay, installed it, and done. Not nearly as bad as I thought, and the whole process took about 1 hr. I'll post pictures later. -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM Professional Resumes. [RBW] Re: 650B -Grand Bois Cypres tire
On smooth paved roads, the difference between the Hetre (650B x 40 mm actual) and the Cypres (650B x 30 mm actual) is minimal. Once the roads get rough, the Hetre absorbs bigger bumps (expansion joints, frost heaves, chipseal, potholes) better. On unpaved roads, the Cypres is fine, but the Hetre is better, especially on deep gravel. Regarding flats, Gino had bad luck in his area with the Cypres. I get around 2000 miles between flats here in Seattle, compared to about 3000 miles for a Rivendell Rolly-Poly. It all depends where you ride and how you ride. From what I hear, the Hetre does appear more flat- proof. I haven't had a flat on mine yet, but I have only ridden them about 3000 miles. Speed-wise, there probably is little between these tires, especially once the Hetre's thicker tread wears down a bit. I prefer the Hetre, because it allows me to worry less about potholes and focus more on the scenery. And I can keep going when the pavement ends. [RBW] Re: Crank/BB/spindle tips (changing triple to double)
Darren- The cyclotourist is indeed a very beautiful crank but it is best suited to those with narrow hips because of its low Q factor. If you have narrow hips your feet will naturally fall closer together on the pedals. Watch people from behind as they pedal and notice where their feet are relative to their hips and what that does to their knees. A crank that is too narrow or too wide for a person will result in knee problems and pedaling inefficiency/leg fatugue. Velo-Orange has the new 60th anniversary model cyclotourist in 165mm and 172.5mm. Yellow Jersey has the old model in 165 and 175 mm. The new model has been adapted slightly for modern front derailleurs - something Jan Heine wrote about in BQ - and the dust caps are different. Darren- Also, I have an old Suntour Superbe Pro front derailleur, which works well with both models of cyclotourist. I started with 115mm bb as recommended, but it turns out to work better with a 118mm bb - not sure but that might be because the frame was built for a 42mm tire with fenders. [RBW] Cops in Orange and San Diego Counties
Hi All, Saturday, I had an interesting experience. I was approaching a stop sign in San Clemente when two OC Sheriffs on motorcycles passed through the intersection going the opposite direction. One of these guys, upon seeing me, came to a complete stop in the middle of the road so he could see whether I would stop at the sign. Part of me was tempted to stop without putting my foot down to see what he would do, but I decided that any cop willing to stop and watch me like this was just waiting to ruin my ride, so I put my foot down and then continued through. I'm still in disbelief that this guy actually stopped in the middle of a roadway and obstructed traffic (he almost got hit by a car from behind) just to watch me stop at the intersection. It seemed to me that these two were patrolling for the sole purpose of ticketing cyclists. The Irvine Bicycle Club was having their annual weekend trip to Carlsbad and back this past weekend and these two were heading down along their route. Last month, there was another club doing a ride down in San Diego County and motorcycle officers in Oceanside were camped out along their route (note that these were club rides, not big organized rides), issuing tickets to riders who failed to completely stop at a stop sign. In both cases, this was done on a road that was not a major road and at places where riders going through the stop sign would not cause much harm even if they did blow through them (they were at T-intersections where riders were passing through the top, where they wouldn't obstruct a turning car). With all the bad driving that I see all over, this seems like a big waste of time and it feels like these guys are singling out cyclists. In addition, they seem to be a little too aware of where bike club rides are going to be and taking advantage of that situation. Sorry, this is more of a rant, but it annoys me a lot that there seems to be some element in law enforcement that feels that we as cyclists are such scofflaws that we merit this extra attention. [RBW] Re: Cops in Orange and San Diego Counties
As one cop (the nice kind) told my brother once, many cops come from the same pool as the criminals they chase. I know I've come across stupid jerk cops; but many are also normal, ie polite with nothing to prove. Hi Jay, I'd be interested in the Albatross bars and I have a practically new set of 46cm noodle bars I can trade, if you are interested in that. Other things I may be interested in include the IRD brakes, DD stem (if I get the Alba bars). I have some new Ruffy Tuffy tires (still folded in the package) for trade for these if you may be interesed in those for these. Thanks, Mike On Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 7:51 AM, J. [RBW] Re: Cops in Orange and San Diego Counties
I'm under the opinion that some selective enforcement arises from the ease of obtaining tickets from violators. I've seen a motorcycle policeman in Tucson who sits on his bike in the shade of a tree along a rodeway with a rather low speed limit ticketing the unwary. It's kind of like shooting fish in a barrel (the roadway I have in mind drops the speed limit from 35mph to 25mph in a short section). If you ask a policeman if they have to write a quoto of tickets the response is we can write as many as we want... however, I'm suspicious that they actually are rated by the number of tickets written. As far as extra attention giiven to bicyclists, at least in Tucson, I haven't experienced any problems. Our main problem seems to be drunk drivers leaping curbs, or whatever, and wiping out some poor bicyclist. Signed and dated by RB. Handlebar bag uses the venerable Klickfix attachment system. I’m selling these as a set, NOT separately. To be clear, these will not attach to Nitto Racks as they are. With the addition of an aftermarket system (such as Arkel’s or Ortlieb’s) they will fit most any rack. As good a pannier set as you can buy, and handmade in the US. [RBW] RE: [BOB] Cops in Orange and San Diego Counties
Recently the Irvine PD has upped the enforcement of stop sign violations and seem to be targeting cyclists. BCI has seen several cases of IPD setting up shop with a couple of motorbikes tucked out of sight and nabbing multiple cyclists for failing to stop at a sign. It's curious they know where to be and when, but BCI routes are listed on their website so it would be easy for the cops to find out the route for a given day and rake in a few extra bucks on a weekend. If you're part of a group just passing thru Irvine, note that the City passed an ordinance limiting bicycles to riding 2 abreast within the bike lane. dougP -Original Message- From: internet-bob-boun...@bikelist.org [mailto:internet-bob-boun...@bikelist.org] On Behalf Of Joe Bartoe Sent: Monday, June 15, 2009 10:28 AM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com; internet-...@bikelist.org Subject: [BOB] Cops in Orange and San Diego Counties Hi All, Saturday, I had an interesting experience. [RBW] Re: 650B -Grand Bois Cypres tire
Well if one were budget-minded or budget-impaired, one could purchase plush 650b tires for less than $20 (CDLV). They don't offer the same performance, but they do get you there in comfort, and last this side of forever. It's mostly that context that I was speaking to. [RBW] Re: 650B -Grand Bois Cypres tire
It's interesting that Fatty Rumpkins don't get much discussion attention when people talk about 650b general purpose tires. I have had them for 4 months and 1000 miles on my commuter and not a single problem. They measure fairly close to the hetre in width on synergy rims (40mm) and they are fairly silent, especially after the initial period of wear. I have used it on a few mixed-terrain rides and they grip fairly well in shallow gravel and semi-wet dirt paths. They are not as fast as the hetres, but they are also plenty comfortable and puncture proof. I got them for $22.50 a piece (not foldable) from Universal Cycles in Portland. I love my Hetres and Cypres, but I love the FR as a do-it-all tire Franklyn On Jun 15, 4:10 pm, Steve Palincsar palin...@his.com wrote: On Mon, 2009-06-15 at 15:46 -0700, Gino Zahnd wrote: Well if one were budget-minded or budget-impaired, one could purchase plush 650b tires for less than $20 (CDLV). CdlVs do last a long time and hold up well in poor conditions, and they're a real bargain. I switched my Saluki to Hetres, but the new P/R, which will be built as a porteur/city bike is getting CdlVs. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Installing a Tubus Luna rack
Patrick, I think the Luna is pretty similar to the Fly, but in stainless rather than tubular chrome-moly. Interesting that you were able to get the strut to fit w/o using the steel tab / cutting. On my frame (57cm with 700c wheels), the strut containing tube is only a few inches from the brake mount. On Jun 15, 7:31 am, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: Wayne has excellent prices and service, judging from my one encounter with him.
