Bravo. I'm jealous! I was on crutches for almost two months after having a cyst removed from the bottom of my foot. [RBW] Fork dropouts: lawyer lip
I am lucky to be the owner of a new 64cm Quickbeam, that bought as a frameset and built up using pretty standard QB parts (thanks to Andrew for selling me the wheels!). Anyway I notice that the fork has a 'lawyer lip' on it, which is a bit odd for Rivendell frames. I've read in the RR that Rivendell usually gets their dropouts with the lip on them, but that they have their builders file them off. This is the first frame I've had that has had the lip on it. I know they are a relatively recent phenomenon (invention, I guess), and I've heard a lot about these things and how they are a PITA because they defeat the purpose of the Q/R, but I have to say, I don't see why they are so bad.In fact, I kind of like having it there. While I don't consider my self to be a _complete_ idiot (the jury's still out), there have been times when I've removed my front wheel and realized that the Q/R was not very tight at all (tight enough to hold maybe, but then again.. is it?), and thought in horror about all the times i'd popped the front wheel off the ground to clear a curb while moving at a good clip. Geez, I would think, how close was I to eating asphalt? As for it defeating the purpose of the Q/R, you can still remove the wheel by hand quite easily, so my question is, what's the big deal? OK, so it's some extra metal to protect you from yourself- is that so bad? I believe for many/most they are a PITA due to the many extra turns one has to do of the lever required to remove or install the wheel. It is handy to be able to simply hold the bike in one hand, flip the lever with the other, and then give the wheel a quick rap to disengage from the fork ends. But with tabs it becomes a longer, slightly more arduous process as it requires a delicate balancing act of having to get in front of the bike in most cases, balancing the bike, getting down there with both hands to unwind the QR far enough to get the wheel out. I haven't used padded shorts (or padded gloves or helmet) for years. i don't generally ride more than 35 miles at a stretch and, for up to that distance, regular FOTLs and khaki shorts (summer) and home made knickers (winter; made from nice wool dress pants) have been fine -- I don't even think about padding. [RBW] Thanksgiving Ride with Quickbeam, Now Routes South on San Mateo Peninsula
This is a first posting of what was intended to be two prior reponses to Nathan regarding routes south on the San Mateo peninsula. If the other responses show up after all, I apologize for the multiple messgaes. - RS Nathan -- here are two routes I take most often down the peninsula. This first route is by far the most scenic, but does have some of climbing. It's a combo of roads and paths. For some reason, Google Maps has old names for current roads, such as calling the Sawyer Camp Trail by the old San Andreas Road, etc. I ride this way often, and usually bail at various points along the way and take CalTarin back to the city. It all depends on my schedule, how I feel, etc. By the way, I have two great App's on my iPhone that help with this. One is the CalTrain schedule, the other the BART schedule. Anyway, the bailouts I use most often are: From the south end of Sawyer Camp. take Crystal Springs into San Mateo CalTrain. From Canada Road (It's Spanish, so pronounced Khan-ya-da) I take any of these: Bunker Hill Road and path down to Belmont CalTrain Edgewood Drive down to San Carlos CalTrain Woodside Road to Redwood City CalTrain or, as this link shows, ride all the way into Palo Alto CalTrain. Here's that route: This is the High Road Route: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/san-francisco/975125808361538267 Every once in a while, I continue past the train station and follow University to the Dumbarton Bridge, then into the East Bay. The second link below shows the rest of that route. I like CalTrain because each train has a dedicated bike car. Sometimes I ride to or from the East Bay on BART, but that is more problematic since there are no specific bike cars. To travel further south, check other resources as I rarely pedal down further than Palo Alto. This second link goes to an alternate route that I ride only on Weekends or Holidays so I can avoid the heavy commercial trucks and traffic of a week day. Oddly, on weekends, this route has very little traffic, even though it seemingly passes through the heart of the Bay Area's busiest corridors. For the most part it all frontage roads and/ or the Bay Trail. The one exception to the rule is in the east bay along the stretch that comprises Union City/Hesperian Blvd's. On that leg, I stay on the sidewalk for about three miles, then once on Industrial the traffic seems to vanish again. Anyway, it's a fun ride because once you drop off of the Portola/Woodside intersection in the city, the remainder of the ride is virtually pancake flat. Here's that link: This is the low Road route, virtually flat: http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/san%20francisco/542125933611559467 Enjoy your rides. Re: [RBW] The cycling shorts ruse?
I find that this is true for leather saddles but I need a pad if riding someone's bike that has a Bontragplasticy saddle. In fact, on a leather saddle, padding causes discomfort on a ride of any length. I do like to get off the saddle for a break at intervals though. From: PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com I don't even think about padding. I have said many times that correct bar and saddle position are the essential elements for hand and bottom comfort. Re: [RBW] Thanksgiving Ride with Quickbeam, Now Routes South on San Mateo Peninsula
Ray, thanks so much for these routes! I'll definitely put them to use. I don't think there's a problem with the list: my email to you was off list, so that's why your response didn't show up on the list. Either way, thanks again for the routes. :) -nathan On Nov 27, 2009, at 9:54 AM, Ray r.sh...@sbcglobal.net wrote: This is a first posting of what was intended to be two prior reponses to Nathan regarding routes south on the San Mateo peninsula. Here's that link: This is the low Road route, virtually flat: http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/san%20francisco/ 542125933611559467 Enjoy your rides. Re: [RBW] Re: Thanksgiving Rides with Quickbeams (and one w/ new Zugster Bags)
I'd love to add my name to the list of Quckbeam owners pedaling around on Thanksgiving, but I'm afraid my QB is still in Walnut Creek being put together and not here in Honolulu. I did, however, ride my current single speed yesterday for a total of about 20 miles, mostly on a waterfront ride near sunset after way too much turkey. [We had roasted turkey, deep fried turkey, and kalua turkey; turkey cooked Hawaiian style.] My current SS is a Fujiyama which was the house brand of McCully Bike (here in Honolulu) back when there were house brands. It seems every year the owners would go to Asia and purchase frames they'd label with the Fujiyama name. Mr. Fujiyama was not the owner, but a friend of the owner. I still see him truing wheels every so often down at their repair shop. Ben, who I think is one of the sons of the original owner, tells me he remembers Grant as I guess they used to carry the Bridgestone line in those days. My current SS, which was once a geared ATB(!) before I stripped the gears and turned it into street bike, will probably go back to knobby tires but remain gearless. I was going to give it to a friend but having just replaced the bottom bracket I realize I love it too much to give away at this point. I will admit to pretending that I was on my soon-to-be Quickbeam. Aloha! Bob On Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 6:14 PM, Esteban proto...@gmail.com wrote: Nice to know we were all out there on our single speed. Re: [RBW] Fork dropouts: lawyer lip
My Canti Rom has a lip. newenglandbike wrote: I am lucky to be the owner of a new 64cm Quickbeam, that bought as a frameset and built up using pretty standard QB parts (thanks to Andrew for selling me the wheels!). Do all Quickbeams feature the dropout lip? What do other QB owners think of them? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Kid-friendly Bay Area trail suggestions?
I am hoping to find a good trail for pulling the kids in the bike trailer. It doesn’t have to be long (maybe 10-15 miles) but should have some good stopping points and be somewhat scenic. To clarify Esteban's response, the trail that starts in Martinez is the Contra Costa Canal Trail. It intersects with the Iron Horse Trail in Walnut Creek (very near RBW). The Iron Horse Trail continues to San Ramon. I'd also recommend the Cross Marin Trail. It's a lovely ride along Lagunitas Creek among the redwoods. Bay Trail. You can start in Emeryville at Powell Ave and ride north through Bereley, behind the race track, then through Albany, all the way to the Ford plant near the Richmond marina and back. All clear and easy except for the part behind the race track. You can get through there easily too, but not quite so smooth, a small hill, and sometimes race track patrons in cars need to be considered. A travesty the gov has not demanded a trail easement through this part. Oh, by the way, the views can be mind blowing and the wind can be windy. Re: [RBW] Re: Kid-friendly Bay Area trail suggestions?
I highly recommend the Nimitz Way trail in Tilden Park, Berkeley. I rode there with my son the day before yesterday and the views as well as the trail are awesome. It has some roller sections with climbs and descents, so you'll have fun pulling the trailer as well. Plenty of space and benches everywhere to enjoy the views while the kids play around you. If you park on Inspiration Point, the trailhead is right there and you don't even have to ride on the street. The trail is paved for about 5 - 5.5 miles and it's an out back ride. After the paved trail ends, there is a gravel trail but when we were there, the gate to continue was locked. [RBW] Giving thank, some pictures and some observations on parts...
I've got to say there is indeed much to be thankful for, and among other things, I'd like to thank this group for being so willing to share experiences and give advice freely. My riding plans this Thanksgiving week didn't turn out as I expected, but I've had time to spend at home with the family and especially with my son after having had to travel so much in the past several months. The day before Thanksgiving, we went to pick up my oldest daughter, a sophomore in Berkeley, and took the bikes with us to ride on Nimitz Way in Tilden Park on the Berkeley hills. This trail is wonderful and the views are great. It's also challenging enough for kids and beginners and on its steepest climb, I taught my son the lesson about not burning your matches too quickly... :-) Here are a few photos that really convey how much fun we had together... :-) http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=128826id=541368201l=99e6fabd6b Regarding the AHH, you'll see I wanted to see how the Nitto Randonneur 45cm bars felt, compared to the 48cm Noodles I was using, and I also tried the 10cm stem (I've been riding with a 9cm stem). The differences in handling are very obvious, and although the Rando bars feel great on the drops, the loss of leverage on the hoods is tremendous. The top is also very narrow and made me ride with my shoulders all hunched. I also rode 13 miles yesterday around Palo Alto, and ended up with low and upper back discomfort, so those bars are going after I send this e-mail out. I also decided to try the Shimano R600 brake levers I had purchased to put on the Moustache bars for the Bombadil, and see how they compared to the CaneCreek brake levers I had originally put on the Noodle bar. I have to say I found them very comfortable, significantly more so than the CaneCreeks, even though I didn't expect them to be so comfortable. However, the most significant revelation was that the issues I was feeling with the Silver sidepulls improved tremendously. The braking felt much better, both in modulation and in ability to brake, even though I can still flex the arms of the brakes. Something in the design of the Shimano levers improved the whole braking experience, but I don't know what. I'm still going to put the Racer polished brakes on the AHH and hope the braking will improve even more, but I must say that if I hadn't already purchased them, I would probably just stay with the Shimano levers and the Silver brakes and feel good about the braking as it is now. I am now going to try the Noodle bars with an 8cm stem and see how that compares to the 9cm stem. I'll hold off trying the Moustache bars until I get the Bombadil and then I will compare them to the Noodles to decide what I prefer. It seems my weekend will be spent fine tuning the fit of the AHH and spending time with the family. Ray, I enjoyed the photos of your ride, and still have it as a short term goal to go on this ride with you. I'll be contacting you soon. [RBW] WTT: new or at least pristine 10cm Nitto half-lugged stem for 11cm
Howdy folks. I have what I believe is a 10cm shiny chromed NItto half-lugged threadless stem. I am pretty sure I got it new from RBW and it has been mounted and ridden around the block, but I took the bike apart before even taping the bars (so it is essentially new). I think it is just a bit short for the build I want to use it on now. Unless these only came in even cm lengths, I would love to trade it for a nice 11cm version. Any takers?
