[RBW] Re: TCO in general..

Good point. A good custom builder should at least know what size
crank the buyer intends to use. Depending on the level of
communication before the build, the builder may know how the rider
pedals.

Two more variables - foot angle and crank length. The angle of your

sizing a bike: So, what's your PBH? Okay. How do you pedal? What's
the yaw, roll and pitch of your foot when pedaling normally? What do
you mean 'what?' You know: Yaw! Pitch! Roll!

I have fat knobbies and metal fenders on my (fixed) 60cm Quickbeam,

cranks on the bike, I hit the fender all the time. That's not why I
took them off the bike, but I probably wouldn't put them back on,

start pondering the RBW possibilities. Depending upon delivery times

[RBW] CXP33s with Jack Browns or similar

2010-02-05 Thread LouisvillePatrick
Good Morning!

I'm wondering if anyone has had problems running Jack Browns or simlar
sized tires (30+mm) on 19mm wide rims, like my CXP33s. I've ridden
50s on my Dyads for years with no problems at all. I see on the Mavic
site that the rim is recommended for 23-28mm tires. And when I talk to
friends (who may or may not be more in the racing tradition) they
always advise, you don't want to run anything more than a 28 on that
Mavic rim.

But I want me something a little more plump.

Thoughts and real experiences?

Re: [RBW] Re: Help with V brakes on Sam

Thanks for the input Steve. I had originally asked the group if they (the
mini's) used a long or a short pull lever. I had found a Tektro (FL730)
lever for flatbars that had a quick release feature I wanted, but they
listed it as working with MIni V's or cantis and I wanted to know if anyone
knew if I could use them with my plain ole (Maxi?) V brakes. I know
the newer Tektro levers have moveable pivot points for use with both long
and short pull brakes, but their description of these levers alluded to
there being a 3rd type of brake. ??
Here's the lever:
http://tektro.com/02products/10ql.php

You know looking at that guy again, I don't see the little knob on top the
other either-or levers have, so I assume the levers are short pull only.

I used those Ritcheys too, for a while, and they were clearly slower
than my 700C tires. The size was visually nice but the tread was
just too thick (for some reason this is very common with 26 road

rubber tread. I don't get it). I also found Ritchey 26 x 1.0 Tom

gave up on the bike until someone here or on the iBOB list suggested
the Panaracers.

My guess would be that they 730's are canti/mini V's only--not compatible with
normal v's. You might want to ask at a shop to get a more informed opinion,

Thanks for the input Steve. I had originally asked the group if they (the
mini's) used a long or a short pull lever. I had found a Tektro (FL730) lever
for flatbars that had a quick release feature I wanted, but they listed it as
working with MIni V's or cantis and I wanted to know if anyone knew if I could
use them with my plain ole (Maxi?) V brakes. I know the newer Tektro levers
have moveable pivot points for use with both long and short pull brakes, but
their description of these levers alluded to there being a 3rd type of brake.
??
Here's the lever:
http://tektro.com/02products/10ql.php

You know looking at that guy again, I don't see the little knob on top the
other either-or levers have, so I assume the levers are short pull only.

Thanks all. I'll be sure to snap some shots for Jim's site first chance I get.
The weather 'round here's been unusually nasty this winter. I'll take my
camera on the first ride, which hopefully won't be too far off.
I didn't really get an answer to my question as to what the heck a mini V
brake is, but thanks for all the help anyways.
The set up is experimental, as I've never run Albatross bars before and I may
not like them. If not I have a noodle in reserve once I score a shorter stem.
I chose the V's over the cantis mainly because I had levers and if they don't
fly on the Sam I'll but them on a CX bike I have that is very prone to fork
chatter. If the rapid grab-release of the canti wire theory is correct the V's
should fix that problem.  The cantis on that bike will find a home on the Sam;

the brake arms (opposite from the pads) together and that gives me
enough slack to disengage the noodle.

Good luck... and post some pics.

Call me crazy, but I just love the idea of all those weird

http://wheelsofchance.org/2010/02/02/ultralight-setup/

This is great. Amazing how much touring one can do without a full
touring rig.

In much of the world one can tour for weeks and months with nothing
more than will fit in a Carradice Nelson or Camper, since there are
an abundance of villages and hotels, BBs, chambres-d'hôtes,
pensiones and youth hostels. Unless you really *want* to camp, which
I don't care for myself. In the US credit card touring is expensive
because hotels and motels are severely overpriced in most cases; in
most other countries, much cheaper but good accommodations are easily
found. I've seen report of people riding most of the way around the
world without having to camp (there are some places where human
habitation is too sparse to be reliable and camping ends up being
necessary).

But even if you want to camp, you can readily get the weight below 25
lbs. Reading Crazy Guy On a Bike and Trento Bike reports I am
amazed at how many people haul 100 lbs worth of crap with them on
bike tours. It's like pedaling a Winnebago. I remember reading one
report of a guy taking four hours to climb up the Col d'Izoard with
all his gear (it's about an hour's climb on the north side for a slow
climber like me; the south side is steeper but shorter).

This guy pushes the limit. Click on the little bike icon to see his
progressively more minimalist touring setups (and he starts out
pretty minimalist):

designed to carry loads and uses short reach brakes ( i still use
700x28 grand bois tires ). my hampsten is ti and has the same
dimensions, but is designed around long reach brakes and can fit much
larger tires. both are custom and are designed for me. they ride great
and the workmanship and paint are flawless. when you compare the level
of craftsmanship to other brands, they're hard to beat. i started with
the dimensions of my 60cm. ram and just tweaked the numbers here and
there. and steve hampsten designed the bikes around those paremeters
and my weight and type of riding. it takes a while for the lugged
steel bikes, but if you have the time, its sure worth it. i have seen
a few custom rivs and it would be hard to choose between the two.

Re: [RBW] 5-Boro NYC Ride May 2

2010-02-05 Thread Curtis Schmitt
AJ,
It's a lot of fun. I've done the ride twice, skipped it last year,
will skip it again this year. One word of caution, please be careful
of the other people out there. There are a lot of riders who use that
event as their first long ride of the season and possibly their
only. And they can be incredibly sloppy and reckless. My girlfriend
witnessed a guy break his arm right in front of her as he crashed into
another guy he was racing against.

Also, if you start with the main pack, there is quite a bit of
standing around, starting, then stopping again for the first few
miles. Really gets jammed up before entering Central Park. I can't
guarantee it, but I've heard registering as a VIP (more $) will allow
you a start at the head of the pack. I assume this means you won't
have to wait, which if I did it again I'd probably go for.

Aside from these negatives, I had a great time both times. It's an

[RBW] Re: 5-Boro NYC Ride May 2

2010-02-05 Thread Will
I rode the past two years; afraid I can't ride this year. Last year
was *really* wet/cold. My Rambouillet was one of the few bikes I saw
with fenders (www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/3503640659) When will
the people learn? :-)

Yes, do be careful out there. In 2008 I personally witnessed 12
different crashes/dropped bikes. The NYPD do a magnificent job
closing 42 miles of NYC streets to cars, but 30,000 people with a mass
start have all sorts of safety and bottleneck issues. Check out this
congestion on the BQE in 2008: www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/2468043524.

 AJ,
It's a lot of fun.

It's an
awesome way to see NYC and to ride roads, highways and bridges that

It's not only the look, although I think the Sidi Dominators I use don't
look /quite/ that bad. It's also that they're pretty expensive and I
really don't want to wear the soles needlessly. Also, while they're
fine for the intended purpose, they're not really all that comfortable

I tried carrying water shoes on a tour last year. Not too heavy,
folded up pretty small, but when my touring companions set off on a hike
up a rocky steep hillside, I was frankly very afraid of falling, as they
weren't at all secure. Last summer, literally on the eve of the tour,
which was going to include visits to two of the Shenandoah Valley's
famous caverns, I got a pair of Keen sandals. Not the SPD riding
sandals, but just plain regular ones. Very secure, very comfortable,
and although not light, they did pack small. I liked them so well I
wore them exclusively from then until late fall.

[RBW] Re: No bids yet?

2010-02-05 Thread rob markwardt
What would the ebay fees be on a one cent sale? I've got several of
these that I'd let go for a nicklethey'd look great on your Masi
or Paramount!!

  It's Rivendell.

That's quite a stretch. I think I have some of the same housing in the
garage that would fetch a pretty penny (or maybe even 3-4 pennies).

save on s/h.

That stuff is actually pretty horrible to use...I used in on bar end
shifters and it seemed that the first 50% of shifter travel went
into housing flex...Yuck!
