Good point. A good custom builder should at least know what size crank the buyer intends to use. Depending on the level of communication before the build, the builder may know how the rider pedals. I'll take my camera on the first ride, which hopefully won't be too far off. I didn't really get an answer to my question as to what the heck a mini V brake is, but thanks for all the help anyways. The set up is experimental, as I've never run Albatross bars before and I may not like them. If not I have a noodle in reserve once I score a shorter stem. I chose the V's over the cantis mainly because I had levers and if they don't fly on the Sam I'll but them on a CX bike I have that is very prone to fork chatter. If the rapid grab-release of the canti wire theory is correct the V's should fix that problem. The cantis on that bike will find a home on the Sam; , Feb 4, 2010 at 5:11 PM, Brad Gantt brdg...@gmail.com wrote: I have run v-brakes of one kind or another for a decade + on my MTBs. As stated above, the issue is generally improved with a bit more room between rim and pad (common on MTBs to allow for muck clearance) and the inevitable relaxing of the cables. I generally squeeze the tops of the brake arms (opposite from the pads) together and that gives me enough slack to disengage the noodle. If I loose a few pounds I’m thinking of trying this setup on my DeRosa Neo Primato. That would be touring on an Italian steel bike with Japanese components and English bicycle bags. Call me crazy, but I just love the idea of all those weird juxtapositions. http://wheelsofchance.org/2010/02/02/ultralight-setup/ This is great. Amazing how much touring one can do without a full touring rig. In much of the world one can tour for weeks and months with nothing more than will fit in a Carradice Nelson or Camper, since there are an abundance of villages and hotels, BBs, chambres-d'hôtes, pensiones and youth hostels. Unless you really *want* to camp, which I don't care for myself. In the US credit card touring is expensive because hotels and motels are severely overpriced in most cases; in most other countries, much cheaper but good accommodations are easily found. I've seen report of people riding most of the way around the world without having to camp (there are some places where human habitation is too sparse to be reliable and camping ends up being necessary). But even if you want to camp, you can readily get the weight below 25 lbs. Reading Crazy Guy On a Bike and Trento Bike reports I am amazed at how many people haul 100 lbs worth of crap with them on bike tours. It's like pedaling a Winnebago. I remember reading one report of a guy taking four hours to climb up the Col d'Izoard with all his gear (it's about an hour's climb on the north side for a slow climber like me; the south side is steeper but shorter). This guy pushes the limit. Re: [RBW] 5-Boro NYC Ride May 2
AJ, It's a lot of fun. I've done the ride twice, skipped it last year, will skip it again this year. One word of caution, please be careful of the other people out there. There are a lot of riders who use that event as their first long ride of the season and possibly their only. And they can be incredibly sloppy and reckless. My girlfriend witnessed a guy break his arm right in front of her as he crashed into another guy he was racing against. Also, if you start with the main pack, there is quite a bit of standing around, starting, then stopping again for the first few miles. Really gets jammed up before entering Central Park. I can't guarantee it, but I've heard registering as a VIP (more $) will allow you a start at the head of the pack. I assume this means you won't have to wait, which if I did it again I'd probably go for. Aside from these negatives, I had a great time both times. It's an awesome way to see NYC and to ride roads, highways and bridges that are otherwise car-only. If you are comfortable using a camera while riding, it is a great opportunity to chronicle the event, as I did the last time I rode: http://picasaweb.google.com/curtisrschmitt/FiveBoroBikeTour2008# Curtis On Fri, Feb 5, 2010 at 12:32 PM, AJ flyfisherman.cad...@gmail.com wrote: Friends, I just registered for this ride, which is a new one for me. I like these! A pair weighs 10oz and packs down small. These are slightly more expensive than a lot of these types of shoe, but the sole material and quality are very good. The sole is hard so you can walk around town easily and the canvas top gives them a bit more structure than flip flops http://www.gungfu.com/htm-apparel/shoes/apparel-shoes-kung-fu-basic-tai-chi.htm On Feb 5, 3:33 pm, Frederick, Steve frede...@mail.lib.msu.edu wrote: I use a pair of nylon convertable pants (zip off legs) and a casual wool shirt for off-bike wear. [RBW] Re: 5-Boro NYC Ride May 2
I rode the past two years; afraid I can't ride this year. Last year was *really* wet/cold. My Rambouillet was one of the few bikes I saw with fenders (www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/3503640659) When will the people learn? :-) Yes, do be careful out there. In 2008 I personally witnessed 12 different crashes/dropped bikes. The NYPD do a magnificent job closing 42 miles of NYC streets to cars, but 30,000 people with a mass start have all sorts of safety and bottleneck issues. Check out this congestion on the BQE in 2008: www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/2468043524. On Feb 5, 12:43 pm, Curtis Schmitt curtisrschm...@gmail.com wrote: AJ, It's a lot of fun. If you are comfortable using a camera while riding, it is a great opportunity to chronicle the event, as I did the last time I rode:http://picasaweb.google.com/curtisrschmitt/FiveBoroBikeTour2008# Curtis On Fri, Feb 5, 2010 at 12:32 PM, AJ flyfisherman.cad...@gmail.com wrote: Friends, I just registered for this ride, which is a new one for me. It's not only the look, although I think the Sidi Dominators I use don't look /quite/ that bad. It's also that they're pretty expensive and I really don't want to wear the soles needlessly. Also, while they're fine for the intended purpose, they're not really all that comfortable or secure for serious walking. I tried carrying water shoes on a tour last year. Not too heavy, folded up pretty small, but when my touring companions set off on a hike up a rocky steep hillside, I was frankly very afraid of falling, as they weren't at all secure. Last summer, literally on the eve of the tour, which was going to include visits to two of the Shenandoah Valley's famous caverns, I got a pair of Keen sandals. Not the SPD riding sandals, but just plain regular ones. Very secure, very comfortable, and although not light, they did pack small. I liked them so well I wore them exclusively from then until late fall. A lot of tourists don't seem to wear bike clothing or just wear cycling shorts under their street clothes.
