[RBW] Re: Nitto Lugged Stem

2010-03-03 Thread Ken Yokanovich
I don't know about weight, length, or any real specifications that
make them different. I have two lugged stems on two different
bicycles; on my Rivendell custom all-rounder, and one on a custom Curt
Goodrich. I have regular Nitto stems on my Atlantis and on another
custom Rivendell road bike.

There is a noticable difference in stiffness when the front of the
bike is loaded down with weight. I'd like to get another lugged stem
for the Atlantis for when touring with front panniers. I have no
desire to add one to the other Rivendell road. Mostly, it's an
aesthetic thing that one looks at and says; Wow, what a beautiful bit
of ridable art.

Yes, we really like the silver SRAM road group as well ... but they
are becoming really hard to find. Likewise, Shimano is slowly fading
to a Gray color with their comparable Ultegra 6700 series. We're
snapping up the 6600 series where we can.

To answer Patrick's question, the friction shifting was the customer's
request. We looked at the black SRAM bar-ends (which are indexed for
the rear), but thought the more classic look and feel was more
appropriate to the customer's liking.

That's right. My experience with Schwalbe is that they run a little
smaller than the nominal sizing. The Kojaks are designated as a 35,
and on the Aksium rims, run almost exactly 32.

I have Paselas on my QB and they are nice for mixed road and trail,
but for road use the JB's seem to corner better and feel smoother. I
will post a report on the Schwalbes after the Roadeo arrives.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Auction

2010-03-03 Thread cm
I am curious how much they expected the bike to go for? I think I
woulda guessed $3000-$3200. A bike that is a personal thing and there
are a lot of things on that bike that I wouldnt want to pay for, but
would if the price were right-- so 75-80% of retail seems pretty spot
on. I can if there was someone looking to purchase a very similiar
bike then it might be higher-- but that seems unlikely.

What is consensus on the current bid? Too high? Too low? just right?

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Auction

2010-03-03 Thread William
Keven told me today that $3000 was the winning price, and he called it
a 'screaming deal'. So I think he was a little disappointed. But
this final price doesn't surprise me all that much. I was hoping to
be surprised. Maybe Riv should have offered more OOAK (one of a kind)
content: give the bike a name, immortalize it in the Reader, open a
flickr group for dream bikes, or have Keven sign the bike. Stuff that
none of us can buy at any price so the person who subjugates his/her
choices to Keven gets some extra stuff that is free yet priceless.
Maybe I'm naive in thinking this. Maybe we all just want a deal,
regardless of what the original price is.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Lugged Stem

2010-03-03 Thread cm
I am pretty sure I remember reading way back that the lugged stem is
very very strong. I think this was back when Rivendell first stocked
them and before their long out-of-stock status--maybe '01-02-ish. If I
remember correctly (which I most likely dont), when Nitto was testing
them for strength they couldnt break one during their load tests,
where others stems broke after a relatively small number of loads.
Does super strong equal super stiff?

Anyone else remember this?

I do know that whatever the answer is, it might be different for the larger
size Roadeo. Someone at Rivendell would be able to answer if you call them.

i don't have any tech info regarding tubing. but, i sold my 60cm rambouillet
and later bought a roadeo. the ram was overbuilt for my riding. the fit was
perfect. the roadeo fits my riding. it just feels better on club rides( fast up
short hills ). the stability of the ram is not missing.

[RBW] Re: Tubesets: Rambouillet v Roadeo

2010-03-03 Thread rperks
The tubing on the larger roadeos is still a bit of a mystery. 59 and
up are a touch heavier for what that is worth. When I ordered mine
they explained that it was quite similar to a Legolas, but possibly
lighter in the stays and fork because they do not have to braze on
brake bosses. As for the Main triangle I have email/asked in vain,
initially it might be .8 .5 .8 but that was never confirmed. Also, my
seat and down tubes bulge to a larger OD as they hit the BB. Bottom
line is I love the ride, I still wonder about the Ram, that one in CO
is tempting to tink about, but really I should just be riding what I
now own more often.

[RBW] My old Hillborne

2010-03-03 Thread Way Rebb
Hello,

You folks seem like a fun group who might enjoy this. I thought I'd
share some pics of my old Sam Hillborne…but first a story…no wait,
the pics, skip the story:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/wrebb/sets/72157623480171652/

Way back in 1982 or '83 I purchased a brand spanking new Lotus Eclair
touring bike in Santa Cruz, CA. That bike served me well for many
years. I don't know how many miles I put on it (tons) but I used it
for school, work, grocery stores, camping, tearing through the hills,
the valleys, rain or shine. I didn't take long tours but did ride
every major, and most minor, roads/trails in Santa Cruz / Monterey
Counties probably a zillion times.

Fast forward 25 years to my recent move to Livermore, CA. This place
is flat. Poor old bike couldn't take that much pedaling and neither
could I. We were used to standing and charging up hills or getting
low, butt back, flying down hills, very little long stretches where we
just pedaled. Now, the bent chainring squawked, the bent rear
derailed squawked, my knees hurt after 30 miles or so, my neck hurt,
shoulders, bleah. After many adjustments and attempts to make the
endless pedaling more comfortable I decided I needed a new bike.
Naturally I went to a bicycle store. Unfortunately very few of the
things they had with two wheels resembled a bicycle. I decided to hit
garage sales and flea markets. Not much there either. The bikes were
really beat up or aluminum mountain bikes or etc. I wanted a steel
touring bike, one that I could put racks, bags, bungee cords on and
haul stuff.

Suddenly I remembered this web site I visited. I had purchased a
couple of things in the past and I think they sold a bike called a…
umm… Atlantic maybe? It took a while to find it but it was
Rivendell. I saw they had the Hilsen. It was almost what I was
looking for except it didn't have cantilevers. It made number 2 on
my list. The Kogswell made number 2 on my list as did a couple of
others but nothing made number 1 so far. After about four more months
of garage sales I saw Rivendell announce the Hillborne. A bike between
the Hilsen and Atlantis with cantilevers! Finally a strong possible
number 1.

In Dec 08 I took a ride out to Walnut Creek. My first visit to
Rivendell and I was impressed. Very friendly people and seeing the
bikes in person was awe inspiring! The one Hillborne was out but
Kevin kept adjusting seat posts and saying here try this one
(Atlantis), here try this one (Bombadill), here try this one (Hilsen)
until the Hillborne was back. I think I spent the entire day riding up
and down the trail with a huge smile on my face. When I got back on
the Lotus to ride home I immediately knew what was wrong. The Lotus
was way to small. It was like riding a circus tricycle.

I put a deposit on a Hillborne that day and picked it up in June of
'09 and have been riding ever since with no pain. The Hillborne feels
like a luxury bike I can really stretch out on. It takes the flats,
hills, streams, roads, ruts, fence posts, everything like butter on a
duck.

The pictures sorta document the first six months and they are fun for
me to look back on. I'm surprised by how many places I've been with
the bike considering how little free time I have. It hasn't been just
back and forth to work. Bikes are a great way to get around and a
comfortable bike is even better. Thank you for putting up with my
story.

I know what you felt. I ended up buying that Hillsen floor model. Great
bike. Tho' I am seriously thinking of replacing with 160 mm Q Sugino with a
narrower crank -- and possibly the B17 which, though comfortable, has to be
a bit high-nosed, which causes its own problems. We'll see.

Question for y'all: with a 135 OL spaced rear wheel with seven (7) speed
rear hub, what spindle ought I to use for a Cyclotourist triple?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Tubesets: Rambouillet v Roadeo

2010-03-03 Thread Aaron Thomas
From what I recall, the smaller frame sizes use heat-treated OS tubing
with .6/.38/.6. butts and bellies.

My memory is not so good on the larger frame sizes, but something like
OS .8/.5/.8 seems to ring a bell (but don't quote me on it).

Grant outlined it in a post on this list, but I cannot find it right
off the bat in the archives. With a little digging I'm sure someone
could uncover it.

the Lotus to ride home I immediately knew what was wrong. The Lotus
was way to small.

Thank you for putting up with my
 story.

[RBW] Re: My old Hillborne

129mm approx, that is what I had to do for my Atlantis. Especially if
the stays are bowed out (like Atlantis). SKF has one that might work,
or you can find an old UN-72, or a TA Axix. Of course there is always
Phil Wood.

 Thanks.
